6:34 am
it is moisture stafford but it is going to bring in some very, very frigid air and we are talking about fierce wind cranking by this afternoon. that means if you live in one of the wind prone areas across the bay area, you know what i'm talking about, through the santa cruz, up the. i know a lot of people probably had some celebrations for christmas outside. make sure you get everything in because a lot of things could get noktd around. we're talking about 45 to 50 mile-an-hour wind gusts and we could see trees go down as well. the winds will intensify between the hours of noon and 7:00 p.m. it's going to stay strong overnight, howling winds tonight through the east bay hills. and tomorrow temperatures will be very chilly.

6:42 am
airasia flight. >> we are back with 15 minutes of nonstop news, traffic and more of the cold snap coming up after the break.
6:43 am
6:44 am
an update to breaking news right now to tell you about on the south bay. fire investigators are trying to figure out if a series of overnight car fires are connected. >> bob, we're talking about three fires very close together and very close to three other fires. >> reporter: you are correct. you have to think about it, just last week monday night going into tuesday morning we had three car fires.
6:45 am
one on the 1500 block of south baskum and a week later, a monday night near at the 1500 block of south baskum. we have glass and if you look at the panels you can see how hot it got. it melted the panels and did not fortunately catch the house on fire. this happened around 2:30 this morning. as you take a look at this map that we put together, you can see all three of last night's fires happened roughly within one mile of each other. and then you had the first one on the 2100 block of south baskum that's actually in campbell, that one taking place around 10:20 last night. as you can see in this photo tent sent out by the campbell
6:46 am
police department, that first vehicle, a utility van, fully ungulfed in flames. they have not said whether the three fires last night were related to the three fires last week. a fire investigator with the san jose police department believes they are arson but no one has yet been arrested and no one is saying that the three fire last wook. reporting live here in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> this is a moisture starved
6:47 am
event that is atypical. >> that's right, atypical. i can tell you i like to look out when i saw that historic storm coming, i was able to gauge that for you 15 days out. what's come being next week doesn't look as impressive by any means. that could change but, yeah, we do have more rain on the way as of wednesday, thursday, friday next week, put that on your radar right away. let's talk about the dry weather. fierce wind. not happening, my friend. that is the wind we're getting -- i know, direally have to tell you not happening? 45 degrees in san francisco right now, sustained winds at 15 to 20 miles per hour. but those gusts are going to catch you off guard, especially if you're taking any of those bridges that move from west to east. the wind is coming straight out of the north this morning. so you're going to have the wind behind you if you're headed south from san francisco in the north bay.
6:48 am
let's talk about that wind, which is definitely going to pick up as we head throughout today. 7:00 a.m., the wind advisory goes in place. fiercest wind i'm expecting between about noon and 7:00. you can see that on your futurecast. this is going to be awide spread event. but the places that lack that friction, you're really going to get those gusts to 45, 50 miles per hour. even at sea levels, we're talking about strong wind until we wake up and meet back here tomorrow morning. then that wind will drop off. temperatures today cool, overnight we're talking about the coldest air of the season so far. cool and dry finish to 2014. then we'll kick off the weekend with comfortable temperatures, upper 50s to low 60s in your inland valley spots. that storm track is going to return next week. hopefully this system will maintain its organization. i want to point out, though, we don't have that atmospheric river tap. that is what produced those heavy rainfall totals, but we might just hit it as we head
6:49 am
into the end of the week. i like watching it and telling you what i see and hopefully this thing will stay together because we still need a lot of rain to get out of that drought. here's mike and your drive. >> not a whole lot of problems for the drive. look at this, 101 moves at speed or very close to the speed limit. let's talk about 680, just before you get to the shot i just showed you. a report of a ladder in your left two lanes. that is a little bit of a difficult thing to remove from the roadway. meanwhile the rest of your drive, silicon valley moves nicely, a tiny bit of slowing and that's about it. the earlier crashes have cleared. there is something going on 101, sounds like there's a stall or something going on along the roadside. a couple of things to call it here, there's a metal pipe
6:50 am
reported across the san mateo bridge and you see a little slowing there at the wynton on-ramp. maybe stay over to your left heading past that scene. meanwhile, we'll look at the live shot. i didn't see the pipe rolling in the roadways but i did see something pulled over to the side on the right so that may be related. that's halfway across the flat section. the bay bridge toll plaza, the metering lights were turned on at regular time. a few minutes later we had a backup and that is all cleared. no fog like yesterday. watch that wind chris christina showed you. >> thank you very much. scientists will measure the snow pack near lake tahoe to see if it put a dent in our drought. it showed snowfall was on about
6:51 am
54% of the average this winter but scientists hope that the manual reading will bring better news. though it was an especially wet december, the storms did not generate greater than normal snowfall in the sierra. >> the bay area is bracing for a cold snap this week. while some people spent last night enjoying the chilly temperatures at christmas in the park, others were forced to find a place to try to keep warm. last night santa clara county put together an emergency cold weather plan for the homeless and starting this morning the home first center in san jose will stay open 24 hours a day through sunday to give people a place to escape the cold. >> the nippiest weather does not excuse you from exercising. bundle up or you can increase your chance of getting hurt. >> if they think they're going
6:52 am
to get the same length of stride without warming your muscles up, you can injury your muscles. >> doctors recommend taking a warm shower before exercising to warm up your muscles or use a foam roller on them. >> and it is the grim confirmation the families did not want to hear. family members as the people on board airasia flight 8501 that banished over the weekend are now grieving the loss of their loved ones after search crews started bodies and debris floating in indonesian waters today. >> many nations taking part in the search effort. stephanie, it's almost 10:00 at night in indonesia. still a lot of activity, though. >> reporter: good morning to you, chris.
6:53 am
airasia trying to arrange flights for family members get from singapore to indonesia so they can get closer to where this is all unfolding. when the first images of a body and plane debris appeared on television there, one man collapsed and had to be carried out on a stretcher. airasia flight 8501 disappeared almost halfway through a two-hour flight to singapore after the pilot reported severe storms ahead. >> in this particular instance we had good radar coverage. they had radar on this aircraft until the airplane went into probably a very dense part of that thunderstorm. >> and today on day three is when searchers first spotted debris, including a bright blue
