happy new year. coming up on "early today," revelers the world over said good riddance to the past and welcomed 2015 with optimism and excitement. then, more victims of airasia flight 8501 as searchers battle the elements looking for clues. dramatic new video of the frightening ferry fire. >>a wild dust devil stirring up trouble at the rose bowl. if you can believe it, snow in san diego, california. and a look at some of the biggest names that we lost in 2014. it is thursday january 1st. music, fireworks and insane light shows welcome the start of 2015 around the globe. >> three, two, one! ♪ ♪ >> happy new year from the international space station! >> the space station crew celebrated new year's 16 times. that's how many times they passed over parts of the planet at midnight. it was a wild scene in pasadena california. freak winds caused a dust devil outside the rose bowl.

it sent a bouncy house flying. take a look. just unbelievable. all that flying debris left four people hurt, but nothing serious. at first people thought it was a tornado, but the national weather service said it is officially called a cold dust devil. that's when a spike of cold air lifts and it intensifies winds in an area. well, bad weather in the java sea is getting worse extending an agonizingly grim search for bodies, and the pain no more apparent than on the families' faces of the 162 souls on board that airasia jet that crashed near indonesia. this morning seven bodies have been recovered and among them four men, three women, and a flight attendant still in her uniform. their remains are slowly being shuttled away in white coffins marked by flowers and numbers. the black box flight recorder still has not been recovered. overnight china's president launched an immediate

investigation into the cause of a deadly new year's eve stampede. the government says as many as 35 are dead and 43 injured. it all happened shortly before midnight. local media says people were scrambling for coupons that looked like dollar bills thrown out of a third floor window. at a nearby hospital relatives tried to push past security guards to get into an emergency area to see their loved ones. last week a shanghai newspaper reported about 300,000 people were expected at their new year's eve countdown. stores across the country have been busy post christmas. one walmart in florida had an unusual guest yesterday. a hawk swooped into the store near bradenton, florida, and was flying around several of the aisles. a wildlife rescue worker had to be called in to remove the hawk for both the bird's and the shoppers' safety. >> i was glad that we got him out of there because he is very emaciated. so i'm going to feed him up, let him stuff himself and let him go. >> the worker caught the bird

using a trap with a live mouse. the hawk will be returned to the wild once it is healthy. well, the last day of 2014 brought abnormally cold temperatures and snow to san diego, california. about a foot of snow was measured in the mountainous areas. many drivers were reporting icy spots on freeways. viewers were sending in pictures of snowy palm trees at nbc san diego. now for a look at that weather elsewhere in the country, here is nbc's meteorologist bill karins. can you believe snow in san diego? >> beautiful pictures. so many gorgeous images places people have their pools still open and snow on the sides of them. >> interesting way to kick off the new year too. >> it was. we ended up with more snow in areas just outside of downtown san diego than we did in chicago, cleveland, d.c. all areas that didn't see any snow at all this past december. so pretty rare thing to happen there in southern california. we got the rose parade this morning, and it is cold.

it is 38 in l.a. right now. it is 36 in phoenix. and 33 in vegas. this is without any winds at all this is the actual temperature itself. so a very cold air mass still over in the entire west. not exactly warm in boise either. san francisco, a little bit of breeze windchill feels like 44. we're at 25 windchill in vegas. not a lot of wind out there right now in l.a. san diego and phoenix. any little breeze and you'll feel it. so bundle up this morning heading out. if you're sitting outside for the rose parade they are hardy souls. a long long couple of hours. the winter storm warnings continue. we got snow in northern arizona and the four corner region. almost snowed in phoenix last night too. it was close. raining and 35 degrees. but right now we have snow at the four corners and in areas north of interstate 40 especially. not too bad even in flagstaff at this moment. today's forecast that storm exit slowly improves as the sun goes to work. it is a cold air mass. that's your national weather.

now to sports. we begin with the orange bowl. eighth ranked mississippi state took on number ten georgia tech. >> he's got time and he launches it towards the end zone and targets delore. dives for it. touchdown! >> an incredible hail mary touchdown for mississippi state to close out the half trailing by only one, but georgia tech's qb justin thomas packed a final punch. he ran for 121 yards, 3 touchdowns and threw for 125 yards and a score to lead the yellowjackets to a 49-34 victory. next to arizona for the fiesta bowl. boise state's jay ajayi ran for 134 yards and 3 touchdowns to carry the 21st ranked broncos past 12th ranked arizona, 38-30. and over in atlanta for the peach bowl. number 6 tcu crushed 9th ranked mississippi 42-3.

maybe some leftover anger after being snubbed by the college football playoff committee last month. and today's the day. it is finally here. the new college football playoff games. some teams and fans are getting creative with their support. here's a nice gesture. oregon has sent customized jerseys to some of their high profile fans with their twitter handles right on the back. and in ohio prepare for cuteness overload. newborns are being wrapped in red baby blankets that say beat alabama. and now for a look at the early new year's day bowl games first, auburn faces wisconsin in the outback bowl. michigan state takes on baylor in the cotton bowl and minnesota faces missouri in the citrus bowl. and then the playoff games begin in the late afternoon in the rose bowl. second ranked oregon takes on third ranked florida state followed by top ranked alabama taking on fourth ranked ohio state in the sugar bowl. the winners will move on to the national championship game on january 12th. bills coach doug marrone

this morning on "today," new research shows promise for spinal cord injuries. all that and more coming up later this morning. and as 2014 draws to a close, we want to take a look back here at the famous names we've said good-bye to this year. just yesterday prolific actor edward herrmann passed away. the tony award winner starred on "gilmore girls" and portrayed president franklin delano roosevelt in several different projects. he died of brain cancer at the age of 71. herrmann was just one of many famous personalities we lost in 2014. nbc's mark barber takes a look back at those we have come to know and love. >> seek no haven in my shadow. >> reporter: maya angelo cast a long shadow as a revered voice for civil rights and against social injustice. her best selling memoir "i know

well, we know how cold it is and was for your new year's eve in areas of the west but alaska, other side of that coin. we are looking at about 34 right now in anchorage, alaska very warm when we rang in the new year. wasn't bad in fairbanks in the 20s last night. it is 34 in anchorage. right now, the temperature is 31 in vegas. so it is warmer in anchorage, alaska than las vegas at this moment. and, today, it only gets up to 42 in vegas. still a very cold air mass. not bad otherwise. i mentioned the warmup is coming. it does look like as we go throughout the next couple of

leading the news in "the new york times", north korean leader seeks meeting with south's president. during a new year's address kim jong-un said that he is open to a high-level summit with south korea. earlier this week south korea proposed to resume stalled talks over issues like reunions for families that were separated by the korean war. and from the associated one rally was held in union square in new york city. that is several blocks of where the times square ball drop took place. the fbi said demonstrators did try to move toward times square but were blocked from the area. from the associated press,

elong musk's actress/wife split again. on new year's day musk, the ceo of tesla motors, filed for divorce for the second time from his wife talulah riley. the couple married in 2010 and split two years later. they reconciled in 2013 but now they're divorcing again. riley will reportedly walk away with $16 million. here is something you don't want to see while walking down the street. take a look at this giant coconut crab. i know. can you believe that's a crab in this thing is almost five pounds. >> looks like two lobster claws and crazy legs. >> i want to see it walk sideways. >> the woman spotted the crab in her honolulu neighborhood and coconut crabs can grow as big as nine pounds and three feet wide. that would take up the whole sidewalk. this one here will soon be sent to the honolulu zoo. and this is the kind of video where it physically hurts to watch. it was posted on youtube earlier this week. it shows, oh there it goes. a cyclist -- >> looks like he could have died. >> he was going 50 miles an hour.
