7:06 am
this was a turn around year a great year. >> at the end of the year we saw falling oil prices gas prices fell. i have seen predictions already that we could continue to see low gas prices throughout 2015. what do you think? >> this is a year where the consumer is going to be flush because we could see $2 gasoline all over the country. phone bills are coming down. a lot and we have in the past. will this be the year americans see a real raise? >> yes. >> in terms of ability to have a good lifestyle? >> yes. this is a year when the companies have so much profit it would be embarrassing if they didn't return it. >> it's been embarrassing in the past. we have seen it happen. >> that's true. the ceos are .

raise you didn't ask for. >> let's talk jobs. we don't have the december numbers. >> right. >> it appears 2014 will be about the best year for job creation in a decade or a decade and a half. about 3 million jobs created. can that extend into 2015? >> yes. there are a whole series whole parts of the economy about to kick in this year. housing. we were still in a recessionary level in 2014. big construction projects will help. we are seeing a return to our power as an export nation. we are building so many things here. these are all engines. >> i have never felt better than i have in this segment. >> right. >> let's talk about possible land mines to look out for in 2015. >> all right. it's not in our country. worry about china slowing down again. really europe has got to get it together. i don't know if they can. japan, a giant economy falling off the cliff. this matters.
7:08 am
we need them to buy our stuff. >> you talk about china. it was determined that china is now the world's largest economy. now i think a lot of people in the united states are uneasy about that. is it anything more than a label? >> no it really isn't. the if they don't clean their air and water up they will be an economy we won't have to worry about at all. they have to spend a fortune just so we can see each other this far from each other in a major city. >> that was the year that was and the year ahead in the economy courtesy of jim cramer. thank you very much. >> happy new year. >> let's go to savannah. >> matt thank you very much. now to the year ahead in politics. let's be honest 2015 will be all about 2016. chuck todd is nbc's political director and moderator of "meet the press." chuck, good morning. >> good morning. happy new year. >> good-bye2015. the next year in politics is all about the upcoming presidential election. >> it is. 2015 is about announcements. who will get in get out.
7:09 am
then raising money. then the first debates. then the first part of the campaign. 2015 is about establishing who's going to run, who's strong and who's weak. >> it can be a race to be first to announce. sometimes it's about delay, how soon you announce. let's start with hillary clinton. >> i'm stunned that here we are on january 1st and we don't have any serious candidates. if you look back the last times we have had open presidential races people announced after the midterms. there seems to be a collective decision by everybody -- slow down wait until march or april before we get the race started. >> on the democrat side people are waiting to see what hillary does. is there any real suspense left? >> not anymore. if there is she's doing a disservice to the democratic party. the machinery is behind her. people will leave the white house, john pedesta, to be
7:10 am
chairman of her campaign. it's not, oh he might do this. if she pulled the plug on this it would leave the democratic party in a real load of pain. >> she obviously knows what it's like to be the front runner early. democrats don't want to see a kor first nation. could you see a serious challenge from the left that if it wouldn't prevail over her it could give her headaches? >> every major front runner with the size of lead she has, even ones that survived and made it through always have that moment of oh oh my gosh. al gore had it. hillary had it with barack obama. there doesn't appear to be that person that could present that type of challenge. i think sometime in the fall when suddenly maybe her numbers -- people will start looking around. maybe she'll feel stale in the news feed. there will be that moment. i don't think it will be like
7:11 am
2008 for her. >> let's talk about the republican side. wide open field. we are seeing a rise of the establishment figures. talking about jeb bush chris christie potentially mitt romney again. >> well, the establishment -- aka, donors -- want one of those three. the grassroots aren't interested in these three. they are unpopular with the with people who vote in primaries, vote in new hampshire, iowa south carolina. there is a disconnect between the mega rich guys ss backing the republican party want jeb, romney. they will accept chris christie though i think he's a lower third. they are afraid of what the grassroots will select like rand cruz. >> those who vote in the caucuses the primaries, who who tops the list now? >> right now it's all over the place. believe it or not after rand paul and we don't have a front runner but in nascar terms he niece the pole position.
7:12 am
he earned that right. he lead it is polls in iowa. after that you have ben carson. he's a former neurosurgeon from johns hopkins. one of the most successful at the pediatric level. he has a huge following in the conservative wing of the party. he's already popped big in some of the polls. i think we'll have a scenario where you will see the rise. ben carson may rise and fall. others will rise and fall while the establishment gets its sea legs. >> 20 seconds to find out what's going to happen to warshington in 2015. >> it's all about whether john boehner and mitch mcconnell want to do something. that gives president obama the opportunity to sign big bipartisan legislation. maybe taxes, maybe something else. for president obama he doesn't control it. it's up to mitch mcconnell and john boehner. >> who is your dream guest for "meet the press"? >> i want the joint sit-down

7:14 am
investigational drugs, vaccine development. we have the ability now to curtail and find and identify more cases. we have certainly made headway. there is reason to be hopeful. we cannot be complacent. >> you talk about ex peer mental drugs or five potential p vaccines being tested and developed. we know some of the patients brought to the united states were given experimental drugs. is one showing more promise than others? how quickly could they mass produce it? >> two very good question s. we have a two-pronged approach. one is prevention. there are a number of vaccine s in development. at the end of november we got encouraging news on the first vaccine that was tried in humans. that's hopeful to go into phase two and phase three trials and be mass produced by early or mid january 2015. the other approach is treating patients who were infected not preventing with the vaccine. we heard about z-map and the
7:15 am
anti-viral. both drugs are now -- have moved into phases where we are hoping for larger trials to see if they are effective and mass production. >> revolutionary medications in the copping year. one in particular a lot of people excited to deal with heart failure. >> this made new as couple of months ago. we felt it was so important it bears repeating. for cardiology this was a ground breaking story because it showed they were testing an investigational drug against what's considered the gold standard. when you do that it's a robust study design. this was not against placebo. it's against what people have been using for a number of years. the drug decreased all cause mortality and mortality from cardiovascular and improved quality of life. this is fast-tracked. they are hoping for approval and marketing by mid-2015. >> immunotherapy in the treatment of cancer. what is it why is it promising?
7:16 am
>> especially as a rheumotologist knowledge of the translational research. you take with a you understand about the way a tumor or cancer works and develop a drug that is specifically targeting that particular molecule. you are thokknocking out something specific rather than the good molecules. these inhibitors showed promise in hodgkin's disease, kidney cancers, melanoma and nonsmall cell lung cancer. >> i want the go into the next one carefully. let's talk about e-cigs. i know the fda is considering regulating them as a tobacco product. >> yeah. >> that has a lot of people up in arms. where is this going in the coming year? >> why sitis it important that the labeling is a tobacco product? it allow it is fda to have more control over the product. that translates into being able to conduct the appropriate well designed placebo trials et cetera to determine whether or not e-cigarettes are safe.
7:17 am
more importantly, now labeling has to include the percentage of the nicotine. it will also include the other content s. in some cases there have been carcinogens found and banning to minors. >> i guarantee in 2015 we won't end the debate as to whether these are healthy alternatives. >> i'm not sure we will. >> or a gate way to discovery. natalie, thank you so much. >> thank you so much. carson had a late night on oh tv. tamron is in for him this morning. tamron good morning. >> hey, guys. on this new year's day many are sharing resolutions on social media. we thought we'd take a look back and see how people did on the resolutions set last year. savannah says mine was to be more honest and not bottle up my feelings. it's gone well and i still have friends. it didn't go well for everybody. kimberly wrote in saying i lost 13 pounds this year.
