nbc bay area news starts now. right now at 4:00 no burning in the bay area a spare the air alert issued for a second day. good evening to you, thank you for joining us i'm peggy bunker. the wild card playoff game comes up next. and after another night of below freezing temperatures the bay area now is thawing out a bit. let's look outside, here you see downtown san francisco on the left actually looking a bit muggy there, and clear shots there over the bay bridge on the right. cold temperatures, many people talking about that and thinking about maybe lighting up a fire to stay warm. however, pollution and stagnant

air means that is certainly a no-go. a spare the air alert has been issued for today and tomorrow. nbc's christie smith is live in san francisco. rob mayeda has been watching this as well for the spare the air day. >> here you see off to dublin, the tri-valley the haze the leading cause of pollutions is the winds go light, and wood smoke, about 38% coming out of cars about 15% and other combustion and dust make up the other 12%. so the main problem here is the wood smoke, and because of that there is another no burn night in the bay area and the unhealthy pollution in the north, east south bay seeing the levels high at times not just for tonight but very likely for a while. as high pressure sets up in the bay area it is like taking the ceiling of a room and dropping it down overnight, the

concentration gathers. the classic poor air quality, high pressure locked in on the west coast, not going anywhere for a while. we're seeing hazy skies like san francisco. could lead to more respiratory issues and health issues for folks that suffer from asthma and that sort of thing over the next few days. nbc's christie smith has normore. you talked to air quality officials, what do they recommend this time of year? >> reporter: well really what they say is this time of year we're just not getting much wind. as you look across the bay you see the hazy conditions you talked about. under better conditions you may see it looking bright and clear. the air quality management district has called another winter spare the air alert for sunday. the high pressure system is in place over the bay area. the trees are not moving. it is very still, even in places like over near the golden gate. that means no burning wood manufactured logs or other solid

fuels indoors or out. despite the cold temperatures we've experienced over the past few days. what they're saying now is that this is the third alert in a row. >> what we're finding is that due to the low wind conditions cold temperatures accumulating at ground temperatures, breathing in for several days. we called it a spare the air day today. we may have -- this sort of situation in to early next week. >> now, the accumulation of soot is even more pronounced i think as you mentioned there in the inland valley. the pollution of course can impact the children and elderly and those with respiratory conditions. sunday will mark the ninth spare the air alert for the winter season this year. reporting live san francisco, christie smith, nbc bay area news. very pretty pictures but something to be concerned about christie thank you so much. many people are heading up to the sierra to get a look at

the snow. all the ski resorts are open. looking at i-80, as you can see there the roads are very clear no need for chains there. however, the chp does advise to bring them along just in case. and don't forget you can keep track of the weather with the nbc bay area app once you download the app you touch the logo for the drop-down menu and temperatures for the specific neighborhood. the app is free for iphone and android devices. and people heading to the dmv, this in san jose all beginning the process of california driver's license. friday was the first day that licenses were available to undocumented immigrants and the lines were growing ever since. now, from the dmv this one is from center road. more on the process, how has it been there, marianne has it been crowded? >> reporter: very crowded. people are still coming in right now. this is one of three dmv processing centers in the bay

area and this was certainly the busiest. the line was around the building there at the dmv office. 493 people made appointments at the processing center. 72 of them were people that took the written test yesterday, didn't pass and came back today to retest. >> we did have a line wrapped around the building this morning. just as we had yesterday. i think we had more people this morning because of the news coverage that occurred yesterday. word got out. i think for this particular driving license processing center, in san jose. it is unique because it is also walk-in appointments. >> applicants have to provide documents to verify their identities and prove they live in california. the licenses are available to undocumented immigrants after governor jerry brown signed legislation last year. more than 17,000 people statewide applied for the special licenses since friday. there are two other dmv

processing centers in the bay area one is in daily city and the other is also in san jose on santa teresa boulevard. now, i talked to some gentlemen who were very happy with their passed test and will also get their physical license in about two weeks. reporting live nbc bay area news. marianne thank you so much. more details as the dmv officials warn people about licensing scams. the agency pretty concerned that undocumented immigrants could fall prey to con artists, new drivers should watch out for anyone offering to help them for a fee. all the paperwork must be filled out at the dmv. anyone with questions should call their local dmv. the search is on for a stabbing suspect on the peninsula. police have been talking to possible witnesses on the apartment complex. this on fair land drive in foster center where the

officers say the event took place earlier. they say the suspect is a white male wearing jeans and a shirt and a red hat. police say there was no indication on the reason for the stabbing of the victim. and uber losses this time because of text messaging. a federal lawsuit filed on wednesday claims that the ride-sharing company has bombarded people with unwanted texts urging them to come on board as drivers. a judge will decide if the case becomes a class action lawsuit. other companies such as burger king and cbs are also facing lawsuits for sending unwanted text messages. and today, a cajun pot luck party. they shut down operations on the first day of 2015. this after a long legal battle that it lost with the u.s. department of the interior who

refused to renew the lease for the farm and the national sea shore. they have been farming oysters for nearly 100 years. the government will turn the property into a marine wilderness area. and new developments in the recovery of air asia flight. they are getting closer to learning what happened to the plane over the java sea. more from indonesia. >> reporter: the searchers struggled against the weather and high waves again today as they tried to operate a couple of underwater cameras, trying to get a better look at these two large objects spotted by senatoronar on the sea floor, one of them 30 feet long and 15 feet wide. as crews bring more bodies to the shore, the officials are looking at more progress. two large objects. the head of the indonesia search

and rescue told reporter this morning i can confirm this is part of the airasia aircraft we have been looking for. they believe 8501 may have stallen in bad weather and fallen out of the sky. there are clues that some analysts believe could point to another theory. the pilot landed the plane on the water and passengers were not able to get out before it sank. >> i find it very unlikely that this crew was intentionally trying to put the plane down on the water from high altitude especially if it is a loss of control it will be a high speed or high energy impact. >> reporter: on friday, the second of many funerals. airasia commander helped the family bury their loved one. at this home in surabaya, they're planning more funerals. he lost his brother-in-law sister and mother and 9-year-old niece. he told me he is optimistic they will find the bodies but it is

in god's hands. his sister-in-law was the first victim to be identified from the plane crash. she was laid to rest on thursday. back to you. >> meanwhile, it has been revealed that airasia did not have a license to fly the route that ended none the tragic crash, the airline was approved to fly from surabaya to singapore. however that didn't include sundays. they have suspended the flights between the two cities for now. and coming up next at 4:00 hundreds gather to remember a new york city officer killed in the line of duty. the sign of respect that officers showed the mayor of new york city after turning their backs on him last week. and a little girl surviving a horrific plane crash that took the rest of her family. her incredible story of survival.

today, hundreds of police officers from across the country attended the wake of a new york city police officer that was ambushed, shot and killed last month. wenjin liu and his partner, officer ramos, were gunned down in brooklyn. before the break, the mayor was saluted when he entered the funeral home. this was of course a stark difference from last week while he spoke at ramos' funeral. police officers accuse him of creating a climate of mistrust. the police chief asked their officers to please salute their mayor. and the trial will start on monday the boston marathon suspect tsarnaev will be in court next week he pled guilty to the bomb ingings that killed

three people and injured others. today, the federal court of appeals denied moving it to another state. the process could take up to two weeks during the trial. and it is a tragedy but an extraordinary story of survival. a 7-year-old girl the only survivor of a plane crash walked through a mile of brush to find help. her parents, sister and husband all killed during the crash. more on the remarkable story. >> reporter: investigators began their search into what caused this twin engine plane to crash in the heavily wooded part of kentucky. >> it appeared to us last nightñr that the plane had eclipsed some tree tops. and then at some point began an inverted type path before coming to a final rest upside down. >> reporter: four family members were killed. artie and kim gutzler of nashville, illinois, their 9

yearly daughter -year-old daughter. their daughter survived walking a mile in the woods. >> a little girl, 7 or 8 years old, standing there bleeding, legs and arms scratched up. bloody nose crying, she said her mom and dad were dead and that she had been in a plane crash. >> reporter: wilkins called police. >> she was able to give us amazingly good information about what she had been through. >> reporter: the family was returning from a vacation in key west florida, to mt. vernon illinois in a twin engine plane. they reported trouble before the plane went down. >> it is a miracle that she survived. but also the fact that she you know didn't you know succumb to exposure, themrmalm -- hypothermia and was able to get help. an incredible survivor's story a little girl who is now with

a cold start across the country on the first weekend of 2015. snow and icy roads caused two massive pile-ups in new hampshire. take a look here. a dozen people involved in a 25-car pile-up there. they were taken to hospitals. texas and oklahoma also expect another day of pretty tough winter weather. black ice left highways there covered with wrecked trucks and cars on their side. and then get this, snow in hawaii, a blizzard warning in effect in higher elevations in hawaii until 6:00 p.m. local time tonight. this is only the third blizzard warning in hawaii since 1986. i am sure many are not expecting

that. meteorologist rob mayeda says yeah it can happen. >> at this level you can be talking about snow levels on the big island. our levels here may be as low as 3 or 4,000 feet at times. not the case right now. but a lot of air pollution, you can see the hazy skies, san jose 54 degrees, san francisco, 53. really can't see much of the north bay and the same trend continues out in dublin right now. 53 degrees beyond livermore. you really can't see the pass there as the haze continues to be the issue. light winds, high pressure above. taking the ceiling down over the bay area overnight as it drops and really allows the smoke to kind of gather at the temperature inversion where it is warmer in the hills and cooler closer to sea level. the pattern really unfortunately not going anywhere. no burn night tonight. very likely will see the conditions according to the spare the air folksfolks for the

afternoon, more hazy sunshine. right now that is the way the weekend will end. any sign of rain for the moment is in the pacific northwest. you have the large blocking high, a lot of moisture out there. it just can't break through the ridge. we have one system that can come in later next week that may give us a slight chance of rain. in the meantime, high clouds are passing buy, storms off mainly to the north of portland and seattle. despite the chilly start, not too bad. daytime temperatures around the south bay warming up a few degrees, especially by monday and tuesday. temperatures 50s, 60s, upper 50s, low 60s pleasanton and livermore, looks like next week around thursday a weakening weather system there. that is about it. as we look at next week things are dry. as we go into the new week temperatures in the bay area

monday, tuesday, thursday best chance of rain as you can see there for santa rosa and livermore, san jose probably missing out on a chance of showers, highs in the upper 60s. tuesday, wednesday, things warming up a little bit. this is really not good news as we go through the pattern reversal from all the rain we saw in december. relatively dry weather here over the next several days. long range models keeping the ridge of high pressure going,ñr we could see unusually dry conditions. all right, something to remember, that is for sure, thank you, rob. still to come both bay area football teams looking for new coaches. one already has an interview set up. we'll tell you who could be the next coach for the oakland raiders.
