going to drop off. onshore flow increases so we're looking at better levels, but, still, not getting out of spare the air mode on friday and then we'll get rain. more about that and right now back to you, sam and laura. >> christina provides the science and here is the bottom line, a live look outside san jose, an area where the air quality is expected to be among the worst in the various regions of the pay area. >> reporter: let's check in with bobby will dell. it's not just the pollution. >> reporter: the wood fire that some people with burning in the fireplaces is why it's important to heed the spare the air warnings. the air quality is that poor, and as you look across the valet floor in the south bay, the thick hayes looking over us. what makes the santa clara valet so beautiful also makes it prone

thwarted. >> this is is still a very active seen with lawmakers and tlanss there out side. two police officers are among those confirmed and 12 people who were gunned down as well a weekly newspaper's editor along with the political cartoonist from that paper. ten other people were also wounded, including five people who are said to be fighting for their lives in morning. in chilly surveillance video can hear the gunshots actually ringing out. [ again fire ] . >> how some of those bullets shattered the windows of at least one patrol car and a journalist who witnessed the attack reported seeing several masked men armed with machine guns. french police confirm the attackers escaped in two feelings and they feel this was a terrorist act. even if you don't recognize the name you might remember hem for their political cartoons that they published depicting the

a we head through the second track of the month it looks like the storm track will rush. overall looking good. i like to keep things in perspective. you're still in the drought and still need to be conserving water. more on the way. first let's check your drive. here's mike. >> reporter: okay, over to the tri-valet. dub lick camera shows a nicely behaving 580, at least getting close to the dublin interchange. the map and show you the entire tri-valet and this is what you expect. do have the slowing at the dublin interchange. 670 builds the volume so you're coming down below 60 miles per hour through pleasanton, no problem. crash webbed and over on right side of the screen. just got word that it has moved to the shoulder and caused an early backup. the traffic heads over through livermore valet and there's the pattern resuming back to its normal pace. >> build for northbound 101 and nothing really dramatic.

670 south towards fremont and also showing yellow there. the traffic heent made it. approaching the bay bridge, not a problem. metered lights on but no problem there and westbound traffic going away from us, moving very smoothly and volume picking up. the last three days since -- two days, i guess, right about 7:00 we've seen the westbound commute really pack into the san mateo bridge. got a break, half an hour, 40 minutes to get there. >> there's your window, and then it will be a lot slower. >> there's your opportunity. >> you cannot tame that bridge, thank you very much, mike. >> up next, pilots blinded in mid-air. what we're learning this morning about several laser attacks. >> the key piece of equipment that could now be found in the plane's tail section.

happy wednesday to you, bay area. we are getting you started with a warming trend. we're going to see temperatures rivaling record today. the unfortunate part of our forecast is that poor air quality will persist for today and for us. we are going to see that hayes at its peak. but we're looking much better as of tomorrow. cooler temps and better air quality and i've got to tell you, if you want to hit tahoe this weekend stick around. we're going to take you live and tell you what they are working with at the base because as we

apart and oil fell because of it, economy and then oil. the worry today is oil and then economy. the side effect of lower prices. 860 americans will lose their jobs because companies can't afford new drilling and new investments and another effect is something called the yield curve, something that the investors study to try to figure out health of the market. it's a little like a heartbeat so this is the yield that you can really call it the interest rate, right, two sides of the same coin and maturity is exactly like time. what you would expect is for the curve to do this is for the amount of money you pay over time to go up, but what's happening it's going move like this, and i know what you're thinking, this a sharpie, no, it is not. yield curve like this normally,

tahoe right now at square and alp alpin, and that, my friend is pretty exittive especially when you save the last three years. in the area we're going to take you. even shorter distance to the beach and 42 degrees on peninsula and 44 on the east shore. temperatures today really, really comfortable although we do have that poor air quality. if it doesn't bother you, your pets or even your young ones get outdoors today but if you have asthma and respiratory issues stay inside. always want you to be safe. this is what we're working for at our beaches. look at this though, monterey, 79 degrees and santa cruz 78 degrees and 71 for half moon bay and even bodega bay up in the north bay, you'll hit about 64 degrees, and our water temperatures are still unusually warm for this time of the year. typically we've got temperatures in the low 50s. working with 5 degrees in the

water in monterey and 50 degrees in big sur so definitely seeing a impact. next couple of days 68 on thursday and 66 by friday getting into the weekend. temperatures will return to average. a little drizzle up in the north bay and maybe pick up an additional one to two inches of snowfall in tahoe with the little system coming through. hey, we'll take any snow or rain we can get next. let's find out what mike working with right now. good morning. >> not to rain on your rain but we ear hoping for a little drizzle because if it's considerable rain it will be a problem with the construction job over at the golden gate bridge but doesn't sound like you've got that in the forecast so good news. san jose smooth except for 101 at 670 where the burst is dicking in for second one this. will hit and stick for the south

hundreds of thousands of californians will soon be told to find a new contract. sutter health and the state of california are being a contract dispute. 100,000 customers are being told they will need a new primary physician starting april 1st. sutter health says the two sides are very far apart in terms of the financial side of the contract. right now no meetings planned between the two sides. >> a surprising new report reveals who is dying from alcohol poisoning in america, and it's not college students. in the first report on the subject in a decade, the cdc says that have six americans die from alcohol poisoning every day and that most of the victims are middle-aged men between the ages of 45 to 54. about 38 million adults say that they binge drink four times a month. for men that's five or more

drinks in a single day. >> two bay-area biotech companies are teaming up to hopefully find a cure for parkinson's disease. genentech is going to perform gene sequencing on parkinson's patients. they will get the information from the startup that does the analysis. the companies hope to use that information to treat the disorder which now has no cure. the patients will give permission for the research and will remain anonymous. >> and romain hopeful they will try to find a cure. >> dow trying to bounce back after another down day on wall street. >> and armed gunmen open up fire on a paris newspaper and killing at least 12 people. an update on this breaking news on this developing situation. >> also following developing news when it comes to the weather in our neck of the

the attack happened this morning at paris offices of satirical newspapers "charlie hebdo." masktd gunmen broke into the offices and killed 12 people. among those killed the magazine's editor and a cartoonist. the gunmen are now on the run. no one has claimed responsibility for the attack but isis has repeatedly threatened the paper in the past. requested today in the bay's" kris sanchez is in the newsroom monitoring the day's developments and will have a live report coming up in 20 minute. >> a battle over more than just messaging. republicans are officially in charge of the congress, and they say they are setting the agenda in washington. president obama is trying to get his ideas out front first starting today in detroit. through the next hour. we'll show you the live pictures and i will tell you right now you're better off indoors for today limiting the outdoor activity if you suffer from asthma or respiratory issues or you've noticed yourself coughing more, sneezing more over the past few days. the air quality is very, very bad right now, and it's all across the board. with the up healthiest levels right here in the santa clara valet and that extends into the tri-valet. temperatures this morning in the 40s. nice and mild out there. your heater is probably not working overtime and later on you can likely give it a break. 73 degrees in the north bay and 69 degrees in san francisco and 70 degrees on the east shore so let's talk about snowpack. as you know we're in a drought. snowpack holds the key to getting us out. in fact, 60% of all the water that fills the reservoirs that we drink from come from snowpack so here's where we are. northern sierra at 49% and 39% for central sierra and down

south they haven't had a lot of snowfall, 41%. want to show you a comparison. here's 2013. look at all this snow we had banked up against the mountains in 2013. take you into 2014, look at the difference, and even before that, 2015 you can see here we are today looking okay, but when we compare last year to this year we're already doing better. here's deal. we've got more on the way. towards the end of the month our pattern changes entirely and every single day you see here highlighted in green, that's a chance for 50% or better. rain widespread across the bay area and that goes for the southern sierra all the way up to the northern sierra as well. 50% chance or better of snowfall so here's the thing. january is typically our wettest month here in the bay area. i think you'll make up the averages getting into the second half of the month and looking good for that. let's check your drive right now with mike. >> finishing strong for the first month of 2015. over here we're starting pretty strong over at the bay bridge

toll plaza. you'll see all the lanes backed up. fast track moving pretty well and as we come off the maize, look at the map, not so bad. this is a pretty typical flow. the earlier big rig and there was indeed a fire of some sort reported there, i thought maybe brakes and that fire is out. they cannot move the truck but it's out of the roadway, distraction south at oak street. another distraction eastbound 24. that's countercommute but it's causing a problem. a slowdown all the way from 980 all the way towards old tunnel road. a couple of vehicles over on the shoulder and sounds like a tow truck lost what it was pulling and it got hit by another car. all off the roadway. counter commute and slowing here tornadoes arenda. nothing unusual for the north bay, 37 with a little slowing and same thing with highway 4 through antioch. bigger slowing for the tri-valet. typical patterns through those areas, including the south bay and northbound routes, a little slowing as well and starting to

build up. nothing unusual. we'll show you the live shot for san jose and here's the slowing we were expecting a few minutes ago and even that is easing into the morning commute and we do have more cars continuing to build as the new year returns to its commute. >> a return to the norm. >> thank you, mike. >> at 6:37 right now. consumers have had more northern in the pockets books thanks to cheaper gas prices business good but the oil slide has hurt the marks. >> but they could be making a rebound this morning. let's check in with scoot mcgrew. >> always good to buy something on sale, right? >> seeing a little bit of buying this morning. the dow industrials are up mildly, 139 points, but we offlost, what, 400 points in the last couple of days. we have a ways to go. yesterday we started in the positive before ending negative as well. major move by intel this morning. the company announced it will dedicate $300 million to new scholarships for minorities and women. it's the biggest thing we've ever seen out of silicon valley company as far as diversity in quite some time.

13 sky divers were able to jump to safety moments before their plane plummeted into a new zealand lake. the plane carrying six passengers and seven crew members was in an altitude of 2,000 feet when something went wrong and the plane stalled in mid-air. officials say the pilot yelled get out and each instructor hooked themself to a passenger and jumped. they were able to safely maneuver over the water and on to a nearby beach. investigators are now headed to the wreckage to try to determine what caused that plane to go down. it is 6:41 right now. new this morning, a mystery solved 20 years later surrounding a heisman trophy for o.j. simpson who won the heisman back in 1968 as college football's most outstanding player. a copy of the trophy went to his alma mater usc. someone stole it from its display case in 1994 shortly after simpson's murder trial. so far police in los angeles will not say how they recovered the trophy or anything for that matter about the suspects. the investigation, we're told,

at 6:44, welcome back to your live look at the sun rising over san jose this morning. beautiful but yet hazy start as today marks the sixth straight spare the air day for the pay area. not just the hayes but near record heat as well. >> yeah, meteorologist christina loren will be showing us how warm it's going to be in your neighborhood today. this she is on the left side of your screen and on the right we'll start hive with bob redell where poor air quality is causing serious health concerns for folks allergies, good morning, bob. >> that weather report that christina will be giving us will give you an idea why we'll have such poor air quality. close to record high temps, dry air and little wind and all of that leads to the reason why we're having our 12th spare the air day this winter season, because the air quality is just that poor. >> we're talking about really tiny particles, ten microns, two microns, tiny particles have get

outside at the bay bridge. that is almost like a painting this morning as the sun rises other that bay bridge. >> yeah. it's a very, very nice start to our day. particulate matter in the air that makes the sunrises and sunsets so illuminating. >> so spectacular. spectacular colors, that's what we get out of the poor air quality, but, unfortunately, especially if you have a little one who suffers from asthma or respiratory issues, it's just not safe, and i hate to say that, even when it comes to going outside today for any duration of time. you just don't want to be breathing in this poor air quality. it just gets trapped here, and we have the worst of the worst in the santa clara valet and tri-vale and as laura was describing look at some of the pretty colors we do get and yes, it's pretty conclusion, but you don't want to be breathing it in. you also want that air recycling in your car this morning us a make your way off to work and especially this evening when the levels really creep up. 40 degrees though to kick off the day here in the south bay. thanks for waking up with us

crashes in livermore and altamont pass things have quieted down to the typical wednesday build and a little slowing for southbound 880 through haywood. there's the pattern and san mateo bridge making their way over towards the peninsula, slowing from 101 through san mateo, a typical pattern. the bay bridge has the metering lights on and no big drama. earlier crash eastbound 24 around old tunnel road had a lot of distraction and slowing that sorted itself out and the commute showing a little congestion. highway 37 slows a bit towards 101. 102, let me show you that and why the sensors are changing in the last couple of minute, a burst of traffic and what looks like there may have been something going on in the lanes just north of san pedro road, traffic is letting up just before you get to the bottom of the screen and no flashing lights but we'll track this. there's the slowing. it's quite evident.

back to you guys. >> an update to breaking news. terror erupts in paris. right now a massive manhunt is under way for the masked gunmen who stormed the office of a french newspaper killing at least 12 people. among the dead journalists and police officers. >> kris sanchez has been monitoring this story all morning long and the president of france says without a doubt this was a terrorist attack. >> reporter: he says this was a terrorist attack and a targeted one. the editor, a political cartoonist and eight other journalists at that french newspaper are dead as are two police officers who are charged with protecting that office. according to nbc news sources the officers did engage the two gunmen before the officers were then selves then shot dead. this is a live feed from french tv in what you can see is still an active scene. law enforcement there on scene along with ambulances as well. french security sources tell nbc news three suspects pulled up to the newspaper office. one stayed in the carats two gunmen entered the building, and

[ gunfire ] >> and you can also see bullets in the windshield of a police patrol car. a journalist who witnessed the attack reported seeing several masked men armed with machine guns. no group has taken responsibility. the target was the satirical newspaper "charlie hebdo" known for political cartoons including past ones they have publish of the prophet muhammad and a recent one depicking the leader of isis. before today's deadly rampage the newspaper offices were firebombed in 2011 and the french president francois hollande confirmed today several terrorist attacks were thwarted in recent weeks. according to the prime minister's office france raised the anti-terrorism alert in the greatest metropolitan area to the highest level while there's no plan to increase security at u.s. military bases in europe.
