the wounds are raw there. >> breaking news this morning, that operation, ongoing police operation in the search for the gunmen, the brothers accused of carrying out that deadly attack on the paris offices of charlie hebdo. we are in paris, lester, good morning to you. >> reporter: some dramatic developments here, matt. 90 minutes north of paris, the two suspects reportedly spotted at a gas station earlier today. that touched off a massive search underway. there are helicopters in the swat teams going door to door, roadblocks, and convoys of the police moving in the region, some with heavily armed, almost military style assault vehicles because of the sighting. at the same time, more an siesty in paris, a police officer shot and killed. they have not made a link to the shooters involved in yesterday's attack, but still investigating that.

the prime minister here says the terrorist could strike again, and so this city is certainly on high edge. at the same time, it's a day of mourning here all across france today, people coming to squares like this to leave their tributes and honor the victims. with flags at half staff and security at full strength, the bells of notre dame chimed at noon as paris paused to take in the last 24 hours. amid the flurry of arrests overnight, authorities announced they were looking for these two men in connection with the deadly assault on the offices of charlie hebdo, calling them armed and dangerous. an 18-year-old named by police turned himself in overnight. it was around 11:30 a.m. when mass gunmen yelling in arabic, god is great, forced their way

in the offices of the weekly paper where employees were gathered for a staff meeting. they killed 12 people. one of the killers murdered a police officer as he lay wounded on the ground. >> it's a major attack on the freedom of the press. >> reporter: security experts saw the hallmarks of professionals. >> they are well known by the french intelligence for several years now. one of them, the younger brother, has been involved in a network for jihadist to go in iraq. >> reporter: wednesday nights, thousands crowded into the square to honor victims, holding signs that say je suis charlie, e am charlie. they are known for skaifing mockery of religion including the prophet mohammed. four of the paper con toonists are among the victims in the latest attack, and in expression of solidarity, cartoonist around

the world penned their own try buttes, this shows a pencil at the point of a gun. another shows a paint brush writing the words down with terrorism, and this shows a weeping charlie brown. president obama expressed his solidarity with friends. >> the values that we share with the french people, a belief, a universal belief in freedom of expression is something that can't be silenced because of the senseless violence of the few. >> reporter: savannah, people here anxious to see these men caught. >> all right, lester holt in paris for us, thank you. general michael hey den, the former director of the cia and nsa, now principle at the risk management advisory firm. general hayden, good morning to you. i'm sure you looked closely at the video as we have, but you have a more trained eye. tell me what you see.

are they attackers, who, in your estimation, have a lot of sophistication and training? >> they do, particularly compared with other attacks we've seen in ottawa, in sydney, and elsewhere. they are very comfortable in their own skin, comfortable with their weapons. they were calm. this was not a random attack. it was well planned. it was not a suicidal attack. they escaped in order to be able to kill again. so this is kind of the high end of the new genera of attacks i'm afraid we're going to see for some time now, the self-radicalized, self-motivated kind of individual, living in full view inside of western democracy. >> and i wonder if this is the new flavor of terrorism that we should come to expect in the wake of 9/11, you don't see, thankfully, massive operations, but now these lone wolf attacks. we saw what happened in canada and what happened before christmas in sydney, australia.

>> that's exactly right, and, frankly, savannah, that's a bit of a measure of success. the big mass casualty attacks on iconic targets were moving, complicated, mull. actors, and we've gotten good adds preventing those now. they just take too long to evolve. we get involved, and we stop them. now what we have are drive-by shootings and self-radicalized individual, and suvs in times square. the attacks that we saw in a shopping mall in kenya, and now what we saw yesterday, and i should add and repeat again what we saw yesterday is probably the high end of this kind of assault. >> but on the other hand, these suspects were not exactly unknown to authorities. one of them has served time in prison for trying to go to iraq and fight american soldiers there. does that just speak to how difficult it is for french authorities, frankly, any authorities, it is to track these guys? >> oh, it really, really does.

give credit where credit's due. the french are good at this. the exteshlt external and internal services are strong. under french law, they have more freedom of action than we do with similar services under american law. the fact that these guys survive and thrive in france, of all places, should be particularly troubling. >> very, very quickly, you mentioned this earlier, i want to pick up on it, i don't know if we're making too much of it, but in contrast to many, many of the attacks, these are two suspects who planned to get away, a get away car. they were not there to die as martyrs, but to kill. >> exactly right. i'm afraid it's a measure of the increased sophistication of this kind of attack. >> general michael, good to get your perspective. thank you so much. appreciate it. turning to a story a lot of people are dealing with. it is the coldest day of the winter season across much of the east this morning. record lows are being flirted

larger investigation. a major scare at the happiest place on earth after the california department of public health confirmed nine cases of piece measles, and disney adventure park. they say it probably happened between december 15th and 20th at the height of the busiest season. health officials say it's likely a single person exposed the other visitors. >> infectious to others from four days before they develop any symptoms until about five days after that develop the rash. >> reporter: six of the infected patients were not vaccinated. two are too young for the shots and one had the vaccine. >> i don't think there is anything to be concerned about. i think as long as your child is vax that itted, you should be fine report. while measles had largely vanished in the united states there has been an increase in confirmed cases. according to centers for disease control from january 1st to 29th of last year the u.s. experienced a record number of

craig melvin is here with that. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. they were hoping to make the next olympic ski team. this morning, though their parents are opening up about their sons immense talent and enormous character. >> bryce was always smiling. when we moved to utah he would wake up every morning and come out to the window and say, "mom it's another beautiful day." . >> ronnie was a gift to us for the 20 years that we had with him were remarkable. he had a short life but it was a very full life. >> reporter: their parents cannot say enough about their sons' positive attitudes and kindness towards others. >> hi my name is bryce. >> reporter: they landed two spots on the developmental ski team. >> his dream was to be in the next olympics. >> but their dreams and lives came to an end where the u.s.

city team is located. they were a part of a group of six skiers descending the slopes when the two veered to an ad advanced ski practice. >> that apparently triggered a massive avalanche burying them in more than 12-feet of snow. first responders and several u.s. ski team members were not able to reach ronnie and bryce in time. >> there was a massive slide. they were just caught up in it. it's just the definition of a tragedy. there is no one to blame. >> but instead of looking for blame, the families instead, found comfort from the outdoors where people few them the best. >> as a family we are sticking together supporting each other. >> they will support him in a vigil in a small community where he grew up. another tight knit community in utah rallied around bryce's family.

there is a heavy security presence in paris. at one stage the train station was evacuated because of a suspicious package. that incident apparently unrelated to yesterday's attack. it gives an indication of the tension here. there are police out protecting monuments, protecting schools, also protecting mosques because there has been a spate of attacks, most small scale. quite large number of them against muslim-owned businesses. we don't know where the suspects are. there have been many rumors at one stage the suspects were reportedly spotted at a gas station north of paris. if they were there, they are not there now, this dragnet continues. natalie. >> richard engel in paris for us thank you, richard. here back at home in connecticut, a 17-year-old girl being forced to receive chemo therapy is fighting to stop her treatment. today the state supreme court will hear arguments in the case. nbc's stephanie gosk is in

hartford. she spoke to the girl's mother. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, natalie. right now the 17-year-old in this case is in hartford being treated for hodgkin's lymphoma against her will. it's treatment to potentially save her life. today lawyers will argue she is mature enough to make that decision on her own. >> cassandra has always said if she has cancer she would not do cheem mo meaning because it's poison. >> reporter: the doctors say it would increase her survival by 85%. one doctor said refusing treatment would be akin to suicide. in december a judge concluded, kassan zra's mother has engaged in a palsive refusal to follow reasonable medical advice for her mortally child and handed all the decisions over the department of3 c3 médico para su hija mortal.

this morning. thank you very much. we'll hear you sing in a little bit. >> i look forward to it. >> over to you. we have a series starting today trying to help you with the new year's resolutions. saving more money is always a big one. this morning we have five things you can do right now. but first, where americans are spending their hard-earned dollars. the average household in the u.s. made almost $54,000 in 2014. the good news is that number is rising. so where does our money go? well, about 30% of our income covers the roofs over our head. the food we eat at home comes out to about 550 a month. and we spent more on beef than pork or poultry. nearly $9,000 spent on transportation. health care comes to about $3500 a year. and if you have kids forget it. raising a child born in 2013 for example, would cost you

nearly $250,000 by the time that child is 18 years old. and then there are all those extra hidden fees. we spend $7 billion a year on atm fees and nearly $50 billion on credit card interest. so how can we save? it's interesting to see. jean chatzky is "today's" financial editor. let's start over here. you've got things people want to do. start a savings account. >> i want them to start a separate savings account. i don't want this to be linked to your checking account so you see the money when you go to the atm. that's like a license to spend. just go to the bank and say delink them. >> all right. make sure that even if you want to you can't take that atm to a machine and take money out of that account. >> exactly. >> all right. you also want people -- we've been talking about gas price coming down. that's good news. more money in people's pockets. you want them to do something with it. >> i want them to save it.

you're watching today in the bay. >> and a very good thursday morning to you. it's 8:26. i'm sam brock. the man convicted of embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars from a bay area symphony is expected to get sentenced today. he used the money to pay off personal debts. he also forged the signatures of two board members on the checks and ultimately found guilty of tax fraud. he faces up to 16 years behind bars. a shakeup right now for the san jose police department which means more officers on the streets, but it comes at the cost of a key division. the department is disbanding its metro unit which deals with gangs and undercover operations. officers will temporarily be assigned to street patrol. the department hopes to relaunch the unit in march.

we may learn san francisco is going to be one of the u.s. cities in the bid for the 2024 summer olympic games. the u.s. olympic committee is meeting today in denver after hearing presentations from four cities over the course of the last month. if the committee reaches a decision, it's expected to be announced this afternoon and you know we'll bring that to you. a look at news weather, and traffic coming up momentarily. for now back to the today show. thanks for watching.

another idea. i said well that last one worked out okay i'm in. they said do you want to hear the idea first? i said "okay." so they pitched me the whole season at lunch, not just the pilot. they had the whole thing, no notes, off the top of their heads, it's blow-by-blow. i was so impressed. >> you have been very careful to make people understand it is a fictional matt leblanc there are big differences between you, the guy i'm sitting across from and the guy i watch on" episodes." what's the major difference? >> hmm. i think i'm a little more responsible, hopefully, than he is. >> this matt leblanc. >> this matt leblanc. i don't think i'm as probably not as fun to hang out with. he's really manufactured and it's been really 21 to play and be the brunt of all these jokes. i've always said about this part playing myself that i don't mind being the brunt of the joke if it's a great joke. thus far, they have been pretty

strong. >> in terms of a work experience when you have a history of being a part of "friend" which is a show of lightening in a bottle in many ways and becomes iconic. is it hard to find another working experience i'm not talking about a product, actually the experience of producing and doing a show that comes close to that? >> well yeah. i mean look i don't think anything is going to be like that was. that was a very very special thing that the six of us had together. . i actually had dinner with david schwimer last night. he said to say hi. >> tell him hi please back. >> it was a very very special awesome ten years. to try to find that again, it feel really lucky to have found that once. this is a fun show to work on. it's exciting the cast is great. it's great in a different way, you know. >> it's interesting "friends" the entire series is now on netflix. >> yeah. >> so people are binge watching ten seasons of "friend." have you done that sat down on

one afternoon and binge watched a season? >> oh. >> please tell me no. >> that's a lot of. if i'm flipping the channel. it's on i'm see which one it is and say, oh look how young i am there. i'll look in the mirror and say, whew i'm getting old. >> you say you are flipping the channel. are you a big consumer of television? in there yeah there is nothing i'm watching regularly. i'm ray mazed the amount of content, when we were doing that there were like four station, remember when "friends" started, everyone had a bigger share of the whole pie. now there are so many "options action" as a viewer that i can't decide what to watch, i end up watching nothing, i'm skipping around. >> what you are doing is working. four season of "episodes." it's great to have you back i don't want to say come back and see us soon i won't be here by that time. >> you have to say tomorrow then it will be a couple of

young he was when he pass which was only 42. that to me is mind boggling the fact that he was so young when he passed. i feel he had so much he wanted to do. >> do you ever think what how he would have lived his life if he had that chance in. >> i think definitely music would always be in his life. it was in his blood, it was who he was truly. he enjoyed being who he was. i think to continue his music was something he would do whether, probably going more into gospel music. that was what he always played and loved to be around. it was inspiration am. he wanted to be a gospel singer. >> i can't help but notice you got the christmas tree behind you at graceland. there is a good reason for that on january 8th radio it? >> yes, elvis loved the holidays especially christmas. he was more a giver than a receiver and the dining room was flooded with people as well as the living room with friends and

family. so he enjoyed giving out gifts. so he always kept up the tree on his birthday as well. he's still here today. >> still there. looks beautiful, a great way to honor him. there are a lot of ways graceland is honoring him over the next couple of days can you tell me what you guys are doing? >> yes, it's four days of events to music to dancing, to movie screening at the symphony orchestra playing. four fun full days. we have wonderful things here at graceland, television was always on top of the game with technology. now we incorporated new ipads that take you on a journey that you can't off on the audio tour which takes to you home movies family events concerts outtakes so it's a whole new thing and kids are loving it which reminds me that this generation now, oh our

visitors obviously, a little under our visitorship as elvis had already passed and they're now discovering elvis and through these ipads, because they get to go and take them. . they know how to use them more than we do actually. they go everywhere on the tour and on the journey all around graceland. so we have good nice things that's expanding and taking us into new technology. >> it's amazing what staying power he has. you by the way have four grandchildren, any of them have the musical gone you can tell? >> oh i think there is definitely some talent there. in fact we have our proclamation of elvis presley day coming up later this morning. so it's about what 4 degrees out. so we're hoping all the fans will be there they're coming from all over europe asia australia. this is a big day, thousands of fans will be here to celebrate his 80th birthday. >> it's great to take a pause,

how they are in this season i think she said you start the season as a "b" or a "c" but you end up as an "a" minus. >> it's different. that's a change. of course when she starts the season out, it's a little touch and go. she knows she wants to be a season and date desi which is an improvement. the problem is the music world might not want her back and desi might also not want her back. so it's a conundrum. >> i don't want to get you in trouble with your friends on "girls," but you have a lot of -- just look at this year alone. >> yes. >> okay the things that have happened for you with "peter pan" and other things. so i guess what i want to ask you is bluntly, when are you going to leave the mother ship? >> oh my god, never. >> but you know sooner or later aren't you going to have to make a choice and start to pursue some of these other things full time? >> you know the beauty of this show is that's kind of not the case. sometimes on a show where you're shooting 23 episodes and you're shooting hour-long episodes,

that takes over your whole life. we shoot -- it's like summer camp. we shoot from april to august. and then we're done. so i have the whole rest of the year to do awesome things like "peter pan." >> right. and that was the last time you were here, by the way, just before you were about to do the live "peter pan." let me just ask you, how did you think it went? >> i was so happy with how it went. i can't tell you how many things could have gone wrong but didn't. it's kind of unbelievable given the flying and all of the choreography and the singing and the walking and just everybody. i mean i'm so happy. >> i loved a little portion of "the new york times" review. can i read that? >> yes. >> allison williams ruined hate watching. do you know that's the best compliment anyone can ever pay you? >> it is the best compliment. and the way i found out was i wasn't going to read any of the reviews or anything. and that morning i got a call from my publicist. she just said, have you seen "the times"? and those are the scariest words in the english language. no? why are you calling me? she read it to me.

gangs and undercover operations. officers will temporarily be assigned to street patrol. and two bay area people monitored for possible exposure to measles. nine people are believed to have contracted the measles while visiting the magic kingdom in mid-december. we may learn if san francisco will earn the u.s. selection for the bid for the 2024 summer olympic games. the olympic committee is meeting today in denver after hearing presentations from four cities total this month, including san francisco. certainly, we'll keep you posted on that. also a look at weather coming up after this break.

she comes out and belts it out. it is cool. >> when you're in concert and like when you're here, by the way, you look everyone in the eye, you are not only -- people ask you a million questions, one thing i noticed is you turn to everybody and you say how many kids do you have. you connect when you're performing. it looks like you're making eye contact all the way around. what is happening up on stage? >> i love people. i have the most faith in us. i think we're going to end up -- we're going to make it as a people. but when i was a kid, freddie mercury was my guy. freddie mercury and queen. and tammy sherman my high school sweetheart surprised me with tickets to see queen. all i wanted was for him to look at me for three seconds so i could go thank you, you know just thank you. you're kind of like the background music of my life. and i go to george strait want to do the same thing there. and when you realize our on the stage, you're looking out there for that reason but the weird thing is now you're looking out to make eye contact to go thank

the way i see it is different. i'm hoping after i'm gone you know, from this world, hopefully they'll go oh i'll get it. hopefully that's what i'll be -- my parents, everything. >> did you miss music a lot during those years or were you constantly playing and doing little things writing. >> still doing your thing. the charity functions, foundation functions never stop. you still show up once or twice a year and get to play. that was great. no offense to music whatsoever. nothing compares to being a dad. it was, like leaving maui to go to honolulu. i don't know how to say it. it was just, like i love to play music, but right now i got to tell you there is nothing better than this. those are days you can't get back. >> there is a song on your current record that you played in the earlier hours about -- about moms. and i have to tell you, it is so moving. i listened to it a couple of times and every time i get misty eyed. you must have had such an

incredible connection with your mom. tell me a little bit about where that -- how that song feels. >> your mom is your best friend your biggest fan. i can't tell you how many times i have fallen flat on my face and my mom looks and goes i thought you were great. that's wonderful to have there. mom and dad were a great balance. mom believed you could fly. dad believed if you were going to fly it was going to take a hell of a lot of work. it was a good realism even dreamy kind of bringing all the kids had that input, which was very sweet. >> do you think about had her when you sing that song? >> i think about her and my dad when i raise my own kids. i was talking to a friend of mine in the business two nights ago and i said i hate to sound like my dad because i knew it was coming. >> beautiful. also earlier in the piece you and jt justin timber lick,lake were rocking that song "friends in low places." it seems like that song hit so many people. that looked magical. what was going on on the stage?

>> he's so great. you go to his show it doesn't get any bet and the whole stage splits and comes over your head and you're going, are you kidding me and goes to a whole different level. his show, his musicians, his crew all of them top notch. >> some of -- somehow you managed to get charity work in too. >> you talk about teammates for kids this is our 15th year and just i love it. we deal in inner city outreach education and health for children. every charity is worthy. every one of them is. i'm just a kid charity. i love kids. >> when i first got here this morning, one of our security guards john came up to me and said i met the nicest guy arrived this morning. he's met every single celebrity who has come through and he said you. he said the way he speaks to all of us you do that for the entire staff. >> that's very sweet. >> thank you. >> don't go anywhere. you have a little work to do. >> crazy to leave here.

still hazy. we're still sparing the air, and that will likely be the case as we head through tomorrow as well. you can really see that haze stacked up in the south bay. 68 degrees for us today. the temperatures could not be better this time of year running about 10 degrees above average. 66 on the peninsula and 63 degrees in san francisco, with changes coming to your forecast as of this weekend. here's how it's all going to play out. hazy skies, cooler today by 5 degrees, we'll continue that cooldown getting into your weekend, that means better air quality for us as onshore flow strengthens. next week looks pretty good temperatures about average for this time of year and then looks like we will get some rain toward the end of next week. we're going to have to hold on to the dry pattern until then but like i said before onshore flow means temperatures will drop off and we're looking towards the 50s in san francisco for both saturday and sunday. meanwhile, a taste of the mid 60s here in the south bay. by monday of next week mid 60s right at average, with the rain coming in on the 17th. if you're interested on that we'll tell you about it today at 11:00.
