morning. that massive rally in paris this morning. a million people taking to the streets, a tremendous show of unity in the face of terror attacks that rocked that country. nbc bill' nealey is live in paris this morning. good morning. >> good morning, erica. after a week of horror that has seared itself into the very soul of france a day of defiance. tens of thousands gathered here already. you are seeing the flags of israel germany. this could be the biggest rally in paris since the city was liberated from the nazis. but it's not just here. from north to south, france has been on the march. [ applause ] their president called for unity and in the hundreds of thousands the french are showing it.

at huge rallies across the country they showed the support for their victims of the worst massacre in half a century. and they chanted the name of the magazine attacked in paris. the pen the symbol of free speech something to hold on to. they are still absorbing what happened here. 17 innocent lives taken by three gunmen intent on mass murder. four hostages killed at a super market. this woman still survived the carnage. >> the killer said i'm not afraid to die. video has emerged of the killer amedi cuolibaly pledging

allegiance to al qaeda. this was his accomplice hunted across france. the four jewish victims were remembered in sin goings yesterday but the victims were christian and muslim too. >> the brother said the killers weren't real muslim. when i see that picture of my brother he says -- he couldn't say anymore and today police have a security challenge as more than 20 prime ministers, presidents and former lead erds gather to march through paris in a show of unity and defiance. thousands of police guarding them and this city a city still in shock. and erica, some news just in from paris prosecutors. they said that the super market killer who killed four hostages

in that jewish super market who also killed a policewoman was also responsible for a seemingly random attack on a 32-year-old jogger. police hadn't connected that attack but the ballistics test on this bullet show this jogger was singled out as well. news too from germany, there was an insendary attack over a newspaper in hamburg that had reprinted cartoons from the magazine where the massacre took place. it was a small device. not much damage. so a lot happening. a security challenge not just here in france but across europe. it is scary stuff. if we could go back for a second to the alleged accomplice to the harriet at the super market. if she did in fact made her way from madrid and turkey and perhaps ultimately to syria as we've her, what are the chances that she could actually be april presented?

administration has a strategy but are they reexamining now and wondering if it's enough to counteract home grown terrorism. >> the number one we're more learning about paris attack and how much potentially al qaeda in yemen had been involved. we had been under the impression they had successfully degraded them there. the scary thing about paris these two brothers who got some training over there, were sleeper cells for four years. that's the new concern with security officials which is okay are there people that the united states government had identified as potential threats, but then had followed them a while and thought well they are not doing much which is what the french authorities ended up doing. do we need to look back and do we need more --

>> i know there's some approach to prevent reentry of foreign fighters to take away their passports if they go away to fight. is there a way to determine who is a threat and signed on with these groups? >> on one hand you would say yes, they have found some ways. again, u.s. intelligence officials had identified these guys. did put them on the no fly list. on one hand that's intelligence officials doing their job, but can you see everybody? can you track everybody, and i think that's -- it's a resource issue. is this more of a problem for western europe than the united states. i think there are plenty of security officials here who say it is. >> all right. chuck todd this morning. thanks very much. and this morning, chuck on meet the press will have much more on the after math of the attacks. and including eric holder, about the fear of home grown terror in

this country. and and shenille has more information on the plane crash in indonesia. >> here's the latest. >> shenille searchers detected more signals in the area where the tail section from the air asia plane was found. dieferses have been sent down to investigate. that tail was brought up on saturday. it took divers three hours to do it using a system of flotation devices and cranes to drag it on to the deck of a ship. once it was above the sea surface. it was clear there was significant damage. the black boxes were not found on it and search boats and divers are checking an area a mile or two away where they heard more pinks today. they have found some debris and passenger seats. the pings are coming from underneath a large piece of

charges after filming a baby putting handgun in her mouth. the video was discovered after the man allegedly tried to sell a gun to a cop on facebook. a pilot killed in a small plane crash in los angeles has now been identified as a nasa scientist. the plane nose dived friday at a busy intersection shortly after take-off. the 47-year-old pilot reportedly worked on two march -- mars missions and was an employee at nasa's jet propulsion laboratory. a new flu alert has been sent to doctors nationwide. they are being instructed to prescribe more anti viral medicines such as tam i flu. finally, on the road to super bowl.

an a bit of fog for the peninsula and east shore and tri-valley. later on this afternoon we'll see plenty of cloud cover. temperatures back into the low 60s. we have rain on the radar. we'll talk about the seven-day forecast. >> hopefully we'll clear out the haze. we'll turn to breaking news now. five people have been shot at a packed san jose nightclub hosting an appearance by chris brown. it happened around 1:20 this morning near the fiesta nightclub across from capital drive in. several shots were fired while brown was performing. authorities saw people running and leveraving the scene. about roughly 700 people were inside. four people were taken to nearby hospitals and a fifth was a walk in. they are expected to survive. it's one of san jose's most

up escape nakedeighborhoods and it may be safer. we have learned that two suspected burglars are behind bars. two burglars were spotted trying to break in friday night. one suspect was arrested immediately. the other was found hide ng a garbage can about half a mile away. back in october people said their neighborhood had been targeted by burglars. it's an area that's been in the news recently as well. it's where the 49ers was arrested for drunk driving and where ray mcdonald was arrested. a live look at the golden gate bridge where the movable median barrier is in place. the heavy lift sg done but there's still a lot of work to go. these are pictures that the district provided. the barrier is designed to prevent head on collisions. it replaces an old system. even with the barrier in place it does still need to be finished. crews will continue to fill

it is going to remain cold throughout the northeast and midwest today. we've got rain in the golden club country, in la. moving further north and should clear out in time for the golden globes later today. on the flip side of that, looking at very cold temperatures. 8 in minneapolis 2 below marquette, michigan, 21 buffalo, 18 boston. temperatures still stay below average. the cold extends down south with temperatures in the 30s and 40s. later this afternoon, the coldest air is still across the northern plains. we are going to start to see some improvements this week, next weekend especially. looking for temperatures to finally get above average. we've got ice expected especially up through indianapolis. that's where we could see a quarter of an inch later today and tonight. we could see power outages. watch out tomorrow as that starts to spread east. it's not looking like a major ice storm. it's enough to make the roads slippery especially for the morning commute monday. that's a look at weather across the country. now here's a peek out your window.

decade ago when a liver started to fail. an organ donation gave him a second chance at life and dreams to chase like running the new york city marathon. >> his goal was finish the marathon in less time it took his transplant surgery to take place. the surgery was eight hours. he finished in less time. >> the chief says rescue teams scrubbed thousands of acres by foot, horse back and helicopter looking for david bird. >> he could have been hit by a car. we had volunteers walk miles and miles of roadway looking for any sign of damage from a vehicle. nothing. no. >> he had already beat the odds once. why would he vanish without a trace? >> one of the things that comes to people's minds is he decided to walk out on his life. that he decided to disappear. >> this is a man who is so dedicated to his family, loves
