golden gate bridge getting its first test this morning for a new movable median barrier. plus video captures the moment gunshots are fired at a crowded chris brown concert in the south bay. one witness explains the. ic that followed. the bay area strikes lotto luck not once but twice over the weekend. the mystery still surrounding a pair of newly minted millionaires. let's take a live look outside from the south bay, starting out our week. it's january 12th. this is "today in the bay."

>> and a very good monday morning. you got to start somewhere, i'm sam brock. >> starting right now, good morning to you. meteorologist christina loren good morning. >> good morning laura, sam, everybody at home. we have some thick fog developing out there this morning. it's going to make way to some sun shooine, this is our 11th consecutive spare the air day. temperature also climb above average and then talking about some rain. we'll dive into why the air quality has been suffering so much as we head throughout the morning together. first i know a lot of people are interested what's going on at the golden gate bridge. >> good morning. we have more details as we look at the map we'll have a report in a couple of seconds. smooth slow of traffic between the north bay reinstated for this morning's commute. smooth drive for the rest of the bay because it's almost 4:32,

that's why you see the light volume. at our dublin camera, 580 westbound with the headlights, a lot of glow, lower adviseibilities and low clouds drifting through. no advisories from chp but we'll track that. here we are a couple seconds when you said a couple seconds, drivers for the golden gate bridge are in for some changes. the golden gate has a new movable median barrier in place. stephan stephan stephanie truong joins us live cu chuang joins us live. >> reporter: the bridge was supposed to open a half hour ago instead of 9:30 last night.

the concrete and steel replace the plastic pylons to prevent head-on collisions. other changes to look out for, video where you can see heading southbound on the waldo grade drivers will be merging left to right instead of left to right. to accommodate that the speed limit drops from 55 to 45. doesn't sound like anything too major but golden gate bridge officials warn it could take some getting used to, so go slowly. >> the median barrier was put in to save lives. we don't want to see minor accidents. we believe this is a safer driving environment and want to make sure people get into that and not have small accidents. >> crews installed 11,500 feet of the new barriers. the zipper truck will move them to accommodate traffic flow.

more lanes from marin south to san francisco in the morning. back here live, it's four lanes heading down into san francisco and two heading north. crews may continue the training here and there but we're told that the first zipper trucks will move into action around maybe 9:30 to 10:00 this morning. live at the golden gate bridge, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> thank you. >> there's a woman who waited seven years for the golden gate bridge median to change. she survived a head-on crash in the bridge in 2008 and partially paralyzed. she spoke at the ribbon cutting. >> i'm so grateful, i'm so grateful, because maybe in the future, people will meet in a slightly different way. >> as she works lobbying for a permanent median barrier, she met the man driving the car that crashed into hers. they've since become friends. stay with "today in the bay"

all morning to see how the actually fares on this first day with a new different looking median barrier. stephanie will be live at the bridge throughout the morning and mike inouye will keep us posted on traffic there and across the bay area. a police chase spanning two east bay cities ended when a police car crashed into a cement barrier. it began with a routine traffic stop with san leandro. the suspect led police on a chase to oakland. the car got away after a tight turn on northbound 880 at haggenberger. the police cruiser could not make the turn and slammed into the cement pylon. crews had to use the jaws of life to free the trapped officer who was rushed to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. the suspect remains on the run at this hour. five people are recovering and gunmen on the loose after a shooting at a chris brown concert in the south bay. [ gunfire ] cell phone video caught the

chaos as fans ran for their lives, chris brown even ducked on stage. the shooting happened 1:00 yesterday morning as brown was performing his first song at fiesta nightclub. chris brown was whisked back stage immediately. he wasn't injured. we talked to the person who shot this video and asked not to be identified. >> i could see people hiding under the bar, just everybody hiding, just panicking, full-on panic. it was like a scary movie. >> the witness we talked to said it doesn't appear that chris brown was the target and the shooting involved concert-goers. all of the victims thankfully are expected to survive. community leaders are organizing a prayer vigil for four people shot friday in a quadruple homicide in san francisco. flowers and candles mark the scene of the shooting. the men were shot in laguna

street in hayes valley. the shooting is said to be gang related. police say the car the member were sitting in was a stolen vehicle. no arrests have been made. a san jose officer accused of rape and assault heads to court today. officer jesse graves will attend a preliminary hearing to determine if there is enough evidence to try him for rape. he's also accused of assaulting his ex-girlfriend in 2012 and 2013. he faces up to 12 years in prison if he's convicted of the rape and two separate incidents of domestic violence. dwra graves is currently on paid administrative leave. one of air asia's black boxes has been found and recovered. search crews retrieved the flight data recorder from the java sea. they've also located and are trying to retrieve the cockpit voice recorder which includes

conversations between the pilots. investigators say the black boxes will play a major role figuring out what caused that plane to go down, killing all 162 people on board. it is 4:37. lady luck must have left her heart in the bay area this morning. two people are waking up as winners of the super lotto. the two tickets are worth $3.5 million each. one sold out of this 7-eleven on mill mountain drive in milpitas. the second an aco gas station in richmond. so far we don't know the winners so check your ticket. the winning numbers, 1, 5, 16, 24, 30, and the mega number of 7. winners have six months to claim the prize. the bad air is now nearly record-setting today marks a simpler number, 1-1, our 11th consecutive spare the air alert. that ties the record set last

year. today there is a ban on burning wood and manufactured fire logs both indoors and out. the winter spare the air season officially ends on february the 28th. >> so the thing is, 11 spare the air days, it's only the 12th of january. >> yes, it is. we got a ways to go, about a month and a half but my rough, shoddy kohl calculations. we'll see what the total numbers are. christina? >> the last time we saw this was back in 2013, we had 11 consecutive spare the air days. if we hit that tomorrow we will break a new july time record which is one of the records you probably don't want to break. this morning we're also dealing with thick fog out there. give yourself extra time wherever you're headed. through the inland valley spots it's dangerous. this afternoon nice and mild, hazy sunshine. your air quality not suffering as much as it was on thursday and friday of last week. we had an onshore flow hence the fog and as a result we have a

little bit better air quality. we should likely stop sparing the air as we head through the mid section of your week. temperatures right now mostly in the 30s and 40s, on our way to the 60s. 66 degrees in the trivalley. east shore temperatures really nice, mid to upper 60s and getting into the end of the week we're talking about rain. we really need it. the pattern looks to change entirely, more on that coming up right now let's check your drive with mike. >> good morning, clils thristin. no crashes blocking the freeways lane and the fog descending upon the golden gate bridge. the center divide that is in police, the bridge is reopened for morning business but fog is there as well. it will be a little bit narrower on the middle lanes and we have fog impeding your view. lower the speeds, you have to, 45 miles per hour approaching the span through the waldo area, that is different and folks will be adjusting all morning and likely all week. we're looking to the rest of your bay on a smooth drive.

♪ the sounds of solidarity on the streets of paris, as world leaders joined yesterday in a massive march and rally against terrorism. basically a who's who of leaders from across the globe joining more than 1 million people. france right now is calling it the largest street demonstration ever in that country's history. france has ordered 10,000 troops to patrol the streets, this as n high alert right now. one suspect is still at large this morning, the widow of one of the dead gunmen and has reportedly crossed into syria. secretary of state john kerry heads to paris to attend discussions on how u.s. and french authorities can work

together and collaborate here to track suspected terrorists. lawmakers are increasingly worried who may be plotting attacks in our own backyard. attorney general eric holder says al qaeda in yemen is the biggest threat globally, launching attacks and inspiring others to do as well. >> that is the thing that keeps me up most at night, this concern about the lone wolf, who goes undetected. >> the white house is hosting a global summit next month focusing on how to prevent radical extremists from going overseas before bringing the fight back home. >> it is 4:45. the school in pakistan attacked by taliban fighters last month reopened this morning. about 150 were killed when taliban broke into the school in northwestern pakistan. students and staff return today amid height bed security, greeted by pakistan's army chief. many schools in pakistan have been on extended winter break ever since that massacre. president obama takes a new

alice" and best actor, eddie redmayne for his portrayal of steven hawking. amy adams for "big eyes" and michael keyton best actor for his performance in "birdman." the series "transparent" took the award for best tv musical or comedy, also won best actor. it marked the first ever golden globe awards for amazon and details the journey of a father of three who transitions to life as a woman. the creator dedicated the award to a transgender teenager who took her life last year. to challenge tesla's new model. we turn to landon dowdy live at cnbc's world headquarters. good morning. >> good morning to you, sam. futures point to a higher open as the markets ended in the red last week. stocks struggled amid friday's mixed job report which threatened to eat away at companies earnings. look for reports on retail sales, inflation and the consumer. earnings season kicks off with the results from aluminum giant alcoa and big banks jpmorgan and citigroup. the dow falling 170 points on friday to 17,773 the nasdaq down 32 to 4704. prices at the pump keep falling. the average price of gas fell 27 cents to $2.20 a gallon the lowest level since april 2009. gas prices driven by the sharp drop in oil, which dropped by half since last june.

prices are higher in the bay area averaging $2.75. bit cheaper in san jose at $2.61 a gallon. gas is cheap but you might not need it for this. general motors is planning to introduce a $30,000 electric car in 2017 that can drive 200 on a single charge. it would be a competitor to the tesla model three also out in 2017. gm will show off a concept version of the bolt. >> you have the bolt and the volt. hard to keep track of. we check our forecast with meteorologist christina loren. >> quite a bit of fog. the live picture of the san francisco bay half of the bay bridge is socked in with fog, soon to be the entire bridge. take it easy out there this morning. that fog is really thick. i know i get excited whenever i see a tesla on the highway. hopefully we'll start to see

more of those. fog right now whenever you drive you want to make sure you're using your low beams and not the high beams because it will cause a distraction for you, get that defusion. mike is tracking that and we're tracking really thick patches at the immediate coast. this was not the case a couple hours ago. the fog is settling in and only going to get worse before it gets better as we progress throughout your monday morning. hey, it's a brand new week, anything is possible and temperatures are looking good to maintain, in the 60s. so it's going to be comfortable out there, although it is a spare the air day, our 1th consecutive. you might want to get outdoors right now we have the best air quality of the entire day. as i promised there is rain on the way but not until this weekend. temps looking good to hold steady in the 60s, thursday and friday bringing the numbers up a touch before we get a return of the storm track. we're talking about several days with rain in the forecast starting on late friday into saturday and sunday, and then watch this, by next week overall

also helps a little bit. >> i'm sure he'd rather be with the pack inside the house. >> self-regulating. mike, how are the roads? those are not self-regulating. >> they're not. so far no reason for regulation to head out there, looking at the map, san jose shows us a good drive throughout the south bay. i've circled a crash 87 at 101. as i hit refresh before we started talking the crash cleared from the chp report so an easy drive throughout the south bay, and around the rest of your bay take a wide look at the bay and pick your phat. you're pretty much at the speed limit. the yellow and the orange, the orange on the right is a start for the slowdown, across the san mateo bridge an easy drive. the orange painted here is the fog in the north bay, and coming across the carquinez and benicia bridge as well. the golden gate is open for business and bay bridge no problems. the cash lanes just starting to backup on this live shot. today marks a big one for
