what san jose police are doing this morning to try to track down whoever pulled the trigger. and brand new week, brand new forecast. today that fog is back and it is thick in spots, hauzy a hazy ano finish off and better air quality tomorrow. the biggest story, rain soon to return to your neighborhood. we'll tell you when in moments. >> the bay bridge million million are on. we see the headlights but lose sight of the car lights half way across the span. christina talks about fog. i'll talk about the burst of traffic also for the south bay. >> we will now look at a burst of movement in some of the cloud cover and fog this morning from the san bruno mountain as you can see, the lights starting to pop up, it's early on monday, 6:00 january the 12th. you're watching "today in the bay." >> a very good monday morning. thank you for joining us to start off your week. i'm sam brock. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon.

the golden gate bridge is back open but it's a little different. if you're a creature of habit, you might need to make some adjustments if you're using the golden gate this morning. >> the movable median barrier made up of thousands of large concrete chunks means tangible changes on the road. stephanie chuang, one of the changes is tighter lanes. this could affect traffic flow, among other things. good morning. >> reporter: absolutely, good morning to you, sam and laura. good weather allowed for the bridge to be reopened six hours earlier, 9:30 last night instead of 4:00 this morning. weather cooperating more than it was before. the toing has somewhat cleared. you can see the four lanes headed southbound into the city and i've noticed that drivers are seemingly avoiding that middle lane, maybe they heard it is slightly more narrow, six inches, to be exact, compared to other lanes. drivers headed into south san francisco have to watch out for a big change on the waldo grade tunnel approach to the bridge,

drivers merging right to left instead of left to right. speed limit drops from 55 miles an hour to 45 matching the speed bridge limit. into action later this morning. you'll see operators on the roadway moving the barrier today, probably about 9:30 or 10:00, first traffic diversion as you call it. that will be something new for people to get used to. slow down. >> reporter: ten operators of the yellow zipper trucks will work together to accommodate the traffic flow up to several times a day. the golden gate bridge district says the goal of the project is to prevent head-on collisions. the question, why now? we'll have the answer coming up in about 40 minutes in the 6:00 hour. we're live at the golden gate bridge, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much.

we'll keep a close eye on any problems that arise from the drive cross the golden gate bridge this morning. stephanie is going to join us as she mentioned with another report at 6:45. in the meantime mike inouye is monitoring not only the bridge but your entire morning commute. we'll check in with him in about five minutes. >> things potentially changing there. police chase spanning two east bay cities ended when a police car crashed into a cement barrier. it began early this morning with the routine traffic stop in san leandro. the suspect then led police on a chase all the way to oakland. the car got away after a tight turn on northbound 880 at hegenberger. the san leandro police cruiser couldn't make the turn, slamming into a cement pylon. cruise had to use the jaws of life to free that trapped officer who was rushed to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. the suspect is still on the run. [ gunfire ] chaos erupting at a chris brown concert.

five people are recovering after somebody opened up fire in the club where he was performing right in the middle of the performance. >> "today in the bay's" nannette miranda joins us. the gunman still out there. >> reporter: that's right, lieu rah. san jose police are still looking for a suspect. no suspects in this case and they're still trying to figure out what happened exactly, trying to piece together what happened at the packed private party featuring controversial r&b singer chris brown. cell phone video caught the flurry of gunfire as brown took the stage at the fiesta nightclub on monterrey road. it was a vip birthday party. during his first song 1:20 sunday morning, five people were shot and wounded. concertgoers ran for their lives and brown was whisked back stage. he was not injured. in fact, he tweeted "i'm 100" meaning he's 100% okay.

the party was originally scheduled at the rock bar theater but was moved at the last minute over capacity concerns. residents near the new location question whether the nightclub offered adequate security. >> first thing that came to my mind, weren't they checking to see if they had like, weapons, you know, when they came in. >> reporter: witnesses say it doesn't appear chris brown was the target. yesterday's shooting in san jose marks the third instance of nightclub violence involving brown in just five months. in august, he was the alleged target of a shooting at a west hollywood venue and in september, brown was drinking with friends in new york when a bottle-throwing brawl broke out. meantime, all five victims are expected to survive. tickets started at $50 per ticket and went up to as high as $2,500. live in santa rosa, nannette miranda for "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, nannette. community leaders coming together to raise awareness

about violence in the streets of san francisco. that takes place this evening. it's all in response to a shooting that left four men dead in the city's hayes valley neighborhood. the four victims were killed on friday night while they were sitting in a stolen car. police have not released their names yet and still don't have any suspects. witnesses though reported seeing a newer gray scion leaving the area at the same time and police believe this entire thing was gang related. it is 6:06 right now. many of us starting out our work week want to get a look at the forecast for today. taking a live look outside from the south bay, this shot looks pretty clear as you can make out downtown san jose. they cleaned up christmas and the holidays are over >> yes, the holidays in the rear view mirror. we're starting anew in 2015 but we are hoping for some of the end of 2014, i.e., more rain. good morning, christina. >> good morning to you. we have rain in the forecast. i'm going to get to that momentarily. let's talk about what a lot of people on the east coast are doing this morning.

california dreamin'. temperatures are downright frigid especially in the northeast. you look at minneapolis, negative 3. chicago at 19. we're talk being a three-hour temperature difference. we're comfortable at 4 it degrees this morning in beautiful san jose. thanks for waking up with us each and every day. we have the bad area quality, it is our 11th consecutive spare the air day. if we hit one tomorrow as well it means that we are going to break an all-time record. one of those records we don't want to be known for here in the bay area so you can do your part today by carpooling, maybe you take the bike. it's a good idea to help out the big, beautiful bay area and show your pride. 42 degrees in livermore. we have a lot of pride, a beautiful place to live in although you can't see it. fog clears by this afternoon. it's widespread getting into the central valley today, could be

problematic with the thick tulle fog. this is what you can expect, clearing by 9:00 a.m. up and down the peninsula at the immediate coast and clearing by 11:00 a.m. in your inland valley spots. i'm sure you want to know more about that rain. i'm just going to have to have you wait just a little bit longer. we'll talk about that in my next report but for today, temps in the mid-60s, staying comfortable and dry just about all week long and then we'll bring on the showers. i'll talk more about when it's going to hit your microclimate. let's check your drive and welcome back mike inouye. hope you had a good weekend. >> welcome back, christina, i know you were ill, now everything looks great, you seem fine. the golden gate bridge is fine now the median from place, traffic flows smoothly and looking at the bay bridge itself. the toll plaza million million are turned on. another concern aside from the volume dplut emeryville, the incline and then goes away. low clouds are drifting across the shot, fog as far as your

drive goes over on the san francisco side of that bay bridge. it's not as dramatic as it looks from the shot but keep that in mind across the bay bridge and other bridges across the bay as well. we're looking at the maps and the golden gate bridge slowing on the approach south of the waldo tunnel as steph chuang has been reporting. they've lowered the speed limit to 45 and folks will adjust. there is the orange haze all over the map, that means our road weather index reports low visibility and fog anywhere north of the richmond/san rafael bridge and including that span, same thing for the carquinez bridge and benicia bridge. lower visibility, so far not playing a factor on the morning speeds. the rest of the bay nice drive either side of the bay as we look at a identify look, the south bay shows southbound 101 slowing up and new crash or deprix 680 coming around jackson. we'll check on that coming into milpitas and update on the next report. if chp has any big deal, we'll let you know.

synagogues and other potential tarts of tro are as authorities remain on high alert in the aftermath of last week's deadly attack. secretary of state john kerry is - later this week in a show of solidarity. the united states telling nbc news that all 53 remaining political prisoners in cuba have now been released. president raul castro promised to follow through on that plan as part of an effort to gain congressional support for easing economic restrictions. >> starting today, a week-long strike at kaiser hospitals across the bay area. more than 2,000 mental health workers are expected to walk off the job. union members are planning picket lines at some threes do kaiser locations statewide. kaiser says all facilities will remain open throughout the strike. >> 6:13 right now. mission half accomplished for spacex, as the dragon capsule arrives at the international space station this morning. >> scott mcgrew? >> you get paid for it, spacex

gets paid for, that's been accomplished, laura. spacex has a contract with nasa to deliver cargo to the station. here you see, well it moves all over the place, it's there, it's at the space station. each time it's unmanned but manned space flights are coming. here you see the launch of the falcon 9 launch on saturday. this is the part of the mission that wasn't quite accomplished. spacex hoped to land the first stage of the rocket back down on a floating platform. that did not work. elon musk tweeted "didn't get good landing/impact video. pitch dark and foggy. will piece it together from telemetry and -- all piectual p" last thursday it was announced senator ted cruz would head the senate subcommittee on space. so while he won't be nasa's boss, he will have significant oversight on nasa's work which includes measuring global warming and senator cruz does not agree with nasa scientists about the science.

"today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us from a 7-eleven in milpitas. some have visions of grandeur, would you just like millions of coffee cups. >> reporter: like i said earlier we feel lucky there's someplace for us to buy a warm cup of coffee on a chilly morning so we feel like we've won the lottery. the 7-eleven behind me did sell one of the winning tickets a $3.5 million ticket and it's safe to say that the construction workers that are arriving here to work along the b.a.r.t. extension through milpitas are not among the winners. one of the tickets sold again the 7-eleven store is on milmont avenue and dixon landing road. there was another one that matched all of the numbers, that one was at an arco am/pm station

gradually clearing, making way to hazy sky. it will look like it's foggy later on today. we have the thick layer to particulate matter and as a result not the best air quality. 42 degrees in livermore, we're on our way to breaking an all-time record for the number of consecutive spare the air days. we're on day 11. day 12 would break the record. the stronger onshore flow get immovement through midweek and area of low pressure starts to churn and drive towards the coast. for us, we're not going to see any rain from that until we get into this week and you'll notice that on your seven-day forecast right there on the bottom of your screen. thick fog for your morning drive. you can clearly see that in the south bay, same for the trivalley and san francisco it's so thick you can only see that one red light, that's there, of course, to indicate how foggy it is to any sort of aircraft flying above. 67 degrees for today, a comfortable day in the north bay. we'll hit 64 in the south bay,

and 62 degrees in san francisco, that is not a bad winter temperature. tuesday into wednesday we're going to hold on strong and then getting into the end of the week, temperatures stay in the 60s, so looking good. let's talk about what everybody keeps asking me on my facebook page. you know what? it's there for you. i'm open to questions. i will respond if you have a specific date, maybe you're trying to plan a picnic, maybe a wedding, ask me right there and i will respond to you. here it is, rain is coming pack into the picture, as we head throughout late friday into saturday. that's really going to be for sonoma county. then the storm track slides to the south between saturday and sunday. we'll get a little bit of shower activity in the south bay, but it's the number of days that we're looking at rain chances that impresses me. we put it on a calendar for you as we get into the second half of the month we're looking good for rain, every single day, just about. you see where you have the green here, that 50% chance or better starting on the 17th through the 18th, the 20th through the 21st, get another storm system and of course the further out you go

the bigger the question mark gets. i'm confident we'll have rain just about every day as we head throughout the final week of january. boy, we need it. we'll give you an update on your drought situation coming up. here's the update on your drive with mike. >> look at this, folks, all these 101 headlights northbound and the 680/280. smooth flow of traffic 101, a typical pattern. we have an incident in the area though for san jose, there is the slower drive i just showed you, 680 northbound, oh we put it behind the placard. 680 northbound crash minor slowing. debris cleared at camden and 17 and 85 but slowing through the area is the volume build. let's move toward the trivalley. the westbound 580 shows a good volume of traffic but no incidents and no crashes through livermore or dublin. folks are able to freely flow

680 southbound. it doesn't show up on our road weather index but the low clouds drifting through the area, visibility for your drivers is sounding like it's okay through the dublin interchange and dublin grade. we see a smooth flow through san ramon, earlier slowing through 680. approach to the castro valley is nice but a crash reported on the shoulder just north of the castro valley y or west of 238. smooth drive into oak land and no problems for 580 or 808 up to the bay bridge toll plaza which has its million million on and a slower drive the east shore freeway, also slowing from the waldo tunnel across the golden gate bridge, because the speed limit is now 45 on the approach, we'll look at the live cam camera, the new median is in place, you can make it out here and also make out the fog across the span, a warning for anywhere north of the golden gate and richmond/san rafael bridge, the benicia bridge and carquinez bridge. back to you. it's 6:22 right now. the stars are certainly shining on the red carpet last night, a

not going to last forever. we are going to see some sunshine later, it should be nice and comfortable for your outdoor plans and we're really looking good for a nice dry week. the rain is on the way. we're going to hold off on that just about every day until we get into this weekend with the exception of friday. we'll talk more in a minute but that fog will gradually clear. the fog is thick in the north bay through the delta. you'll see clearing along the immediate coastline up and down the peninsula by 9:00 a.m. we'll wait for the clearing until 1:00 a.m. for inland valleys but looking like a nice day with the exception of the bad air quality, we just can't get all that particulate matter out of here. i can tell you your pollution levels are much lower than they were at the end of last week. temperatures above average, 64 degrees in the south bay today, 64 on the peninsula, and trivalley comfortable at 66 degrees. so here's the deal, i always like to give you a few days'

notice when things are going to change around here. temperatures are going to stay really mild all the way across the board and that rain returns late friday into saturday, and with he need it. we could be measuring it in inches before all is said and done. i'll show you your futurecast in moments. first we send it to mike inouye. big morning for the golden gate bridge. >> it is. we'll show you what we can of the big morning. the bay bridge toll plaza camera shows you the million million are on so the backup has all the headlights at the toll plaza. nothing really unusual about this and that's great news. tougher weekend as they take the load from the golden gate bridge. emeryville to the span we see the inline and nothing else. low clouds drifting across and fog is an issue on the san francisco side, leaving or arriving to that sf side of the bay bridge and the golden gate bridge this is what we're talking about, the median is in place and we've seen no problems on the span, except we can't see the whole span because of the fog so that is the issue across there. you'll lower your speed as we

look at the map, 45 miles per hour toward the waldo grade because of the changing alignment shifting to the left instead of the right. folks will be adjusting, they are just fine so far. the fog in the north bay north of the richmond/san rafael bridge is the orange you see overlaid on the maps and upper east shore freeway on the right and carquinez bridge and benicia bridge. antioch is fine highway 4, you have the building, nothing unusual through the fog. same thing for the trivalley and castro valley. earlier crash north 238 at 185 i should say that cleared to the shoulder but still a distraction there and in the south bay, z1u at the bottom of your screen, 101 and 068 and there is a crash just at the bottom of the screen behind the clock you see a little orange the bottom there, we heard about that crash. thank you, look at that. asking me to move any obstacles from your view. >> it's like a gift. >> it is. >> almost as good as a birthday gift. as we should be giving one to

officials say it should have information about the aircraft's condition, crucial information. the divers also located the plane's cockpit voice recorder, but it's edged beneath wreckage more than 100 feet underwater. they're trying to get all the evidence they can. investigators also say both block box also play a key role pinpointing the exact cause of the crash. all 162 people on board of that plane are presumed dead. a san jose officer accused of rape and assault heads to court today. officer jesse graves will attend a preliminary hearing to determine if there is enough evidence to try him for rape. investigators say graves raped an undocumented woman who called for police help last year and also acued of assaulting his ex-girlfriend in 2012 and 2013. he faces up to 12 years if convicted of rape and to separate incidents of domestic violence. he is currently on paid administrative leave.

stephanie chuang joins us live from the marin side of the bridge. the lanes are a little different which provide less room for error. good morning. >> reporter: that's right, good morning to you, sam and laura. so the bridge reopening about 9:to last night, six hours ahead of schedule because the weather was so good. the weather this morning not cooperating as much as the fog is still obscuring the view of this new median barrier, but one thing to watch out for, the lanes right next to the median are now six inches more narrow, so that is a definite change. drivers will have to pay attention to drivers headed south into san francisco have to pay attention to a pretty big change on the waldo grade on the approach to the bridge. drivers merging right to left instead of left to right which they've been doing for years. the speed limit dropping from 55 to 45 miles an hour to match the bridge's speed limit there and help golden gate bridge bridge district officials warning take it easy as you get used to the

think perspective, do you have laser vision, mike, on the bridge and across the bay area. >> we have specific traffic vision. the same as regular vision except for we're focusing on the traffic southbound 101 and the divider that you see is a solid divider instead of the pylons that you're used to and narrows the lane six inches on either side. that affects the lanes up on the divider. fog is more of an issue as we look at your map. the fog will slow you down, so will the 45-mile-an-hour speed limit coming down the waldo grade and approaching that golden gate bridge. both of those are a factor this morning but the bridge moves smoothly from the north bay in towards san francisco and vice ver versa. looking north of the richmond/san rafael bridge with the orange painted across the north bay headed toward ree joe vista andu concord, wall net creek, where fog and low clouds say factor. we see slows through pittsburgh

and bay point but the bay bridge and carquinez bridge moving well and the metering lights are on. hayward, dublin, livermore and on the meiness in laside, san bruno, san mateo, those are all moving very smoothly, typical pattern here across that san mateo bridge slowing through hayward as the volume builds. . slowing up westbound starting to move better but the last five to ten minutes seen a burst of traffic and lower visibility. slighter slower drive for safety sake. south of 92, the dumb boreton brick and the south bay moves nicely. compression 880 south to the dumbo, and northbound routes for the south bay themselves, i was talking about an earlier crash 101 at 85. things are cleared from lanes but you're slowing up into the split in san jose and the rest of silicon valley. the live look shows you

northbound 101, holds with that build which kicks in now and continues to build through about 9:00 for the south bay. we will see this heavy volume continue to grow for 101, 85 and 280 over the next few minutes. >> seeing haze in some parts, foggy in other areas. taking a live look outside from the south bay, depends on where you are. christina joins us with a look at the forecast. >> we're accustomed to seeing you at the golden gate bridge but it's all over the area. >> i think some people don't really keep in mind that it actually moves around, so fog drifts. it does not stay stationary, and as a result, you can leave your house completely clear conditions, and once you hit that highway, you encounter some dense patches. that's exactly what happened to me on my way to san jose from campbell this morning. i can tell you as we head throughout the day today we'll see that fog for the first part of the day, it will be burning off by 11:00 a.m. through your inland valley spots. visibility down to a fartherer mile in concord through

livermore. it's not just the usual suspects although the usual suspects are fogged in had as well. live at the golden gate bridge commuters are charging through the fog. give yourself extra time, it will get worse before it gets better. between 8:00 and 9:00 the fog will begin to lift. it is another spare the air day. temperatures will end up in the mid-60s. now your days are short in the wintertime. the sun will set at 5:11 and the fog will be thick quen the sup starts to set so it will roll back in on time. 64 degrees in the south bay, 64 on the peninsula and temperatures nice and comfortable for you to get outdoors in the trivalley. keep in mind if you suffer from asthma or respiratory issues, bad air quality today. we recommend that you do stay inside and want to you stay safe, goes for you and family and little runs wunz. 65 degrees for wednesday. staying steady, the trend is for

the mid-60s even in san francisco. everything changes in the weekend. we have rain on the way and quite a bit of it if everything stays organized. this is our weather maker taken extends out to the pacific islands and what that means for us is that it looks good for a subtropical moisture tab that we desperately need. bay area looking good for rain starting late friday into saturday, that will continue into sunday. watch, this i take you into next week, the storms keep coming in. that's a good pattern typically. january is the wettest month here in the bay area. we really need this rain and overall the pattern looks to be changing. hopefully this will be the case as we head throughout the next couple days. i'm always posting on facebook and twitter. we'll have more updates as we progress throughout the week. back to you sam and laura.

>> thank you, christina. there was chaos at a chris brown concert this morning. five people are recovering after someone opened fire inside a san jose nightclub right in the middle of that singer's performance. >> "today in the bay's" nannette miranda joining us from san jose police headquarters of president the gunmen a san jose. the gunmen are still out there. >> reporter: they have so far made no ares. cell phone video captured the chaos as fans scrambled to safety, ducking for cover or bolting to the exits. the shooting happened 1:20 a.m. sunday morning at the fiesta nightclub during a private party. controversial r&b singer chris brown. brown was not hurt, and was

hustled to safety back stage. we spoke to a concert goer who shot video from inside and did not want to be identified. >> i could see people hiding under the bar, just everybody wv hiding, just panicking, full-on panic. it was like a scary movie. >> reporter: residents near the nightclub questioned whether the event organizers provided adequate security. yesterday's shooting in san jose marks the third instance of club violence involving brown in just five months. in august, the grammy-winning artist was the alleged target at a west hollywood venue and a month later, brown was drinking with friends in new york when a battle-throwing brawl broke out. now witnesses say that it does not appear that chris brown was the actual target. all five victims are expected to survive. live in san jose, nannette miranda for "today in the bay." >> that could have been a scary, fatal situation. luckily it was not. thank you very much. >> it is 6:53 right now.

happening now, the first day in what's planned to be a week-long strike at kaiser hospitals across the bay area. more than 2,000 mental health workers are expected to walk off the job. union members are planning to picket at some three dozen kaiser locations statewide. the union is demanding more mental health workers be hired and retained. kaiser says its teams are sufficiently staffed. hospital spokesperson says all camp uses will meet the needs of patients through the end of the strike and all office also sts y open. the odds are not on your side but that does not stop you from playing the lotto. two winning super lotto tickets were sold in the bay area, worth $3.5 million apiece. >> "today in the bay's" chris kh sanchez joins us live kris sanchez joins us live in

time is 6:57. one final check of the day's top stories. france right now deploying thousands of troops at jewish schools, synagogues and other potential targets of terror. this as authorities remain on high alert in the aftermath of last week's deadly attacks. secretary of state john kerry is planning to travel to paris later this week to show u.s. solidarity. emergency crews had to use the jaws of life to free a trapped police officer whose car crashed during a chase. it started early this morning after a routine traffic stop in san leandro. the officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries when the patrol car couldn't handle a tight turn and hit a cement pylon in oakland. the car being chased actually got away. >> no more pylons on the golden gate bridge. there's a movable median barrier on the bridge. crews had it installed long before the morning's deadline. the median occupies six inches of lane space in either section, that's what's been reduced.
