>> a very good tuesday morning, 4:30 now. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm sam brock. we will begin with a look at your forecast and christina loren we saw the bay bridge, you couldn't really see the beeay bridge. >> oh my goodness it is really thick. wherever you're headed really you'll encounter the thick fog. it took me three times longer than usual to get here from campbell. it is going to settle in through the next couple hours. the temperatures remain chilly for the start of the day but mild again we'll end up in the mid-60s. mike has the day off, i'm pulling double duty so traffic now christina loren. you want to take it easy, all your bay area bridges have a fog advisory and the san mateo bridge where you can barely make

out the good quarter of a mile. it's really, really thick. you can see commuters charging through the thick fog. give yourself extra time, travel cautiously and i have some great fog pics if you're not leaving just yet. california might finally get a glimpse of what the future has in store for state attorney kamala harris. she is expected to reveal a run for u.s. senate this morning, trying to fill the seat of barbara boxer that she's leaving mind next year. larry gertzen says she is going to face some challenges. >> some independents and republicans won't like her. democrats will like her. >> she's serving her second term as california's attorney general. this is the first time in two decades a senate seat has opened up in california. the the obvious follow-up

now, what about gavin newsom? the lieutenant governor said he would not run for barbara boxer's senate seat. he's talked about "unfinished work" in california, leaving many to believe he would run for governor. a show of defiance, perhaps a moment of triumph from the surviving staff members of "charlie hebdo." the first issue since last week's massacre is said to roll out tomorrow. the cover depicts the prophet muhammad holding a sign saying je suis charlie or "i am charlie." the front page says "all is forgiven" in french. the editorial team is working under heavy security. normally they print 3,000 copies. this week 3 million copies printed in six different languages.

the four french killed at a siege at a kosher market in paris will be laid to rest in israel today. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu is expected to attend that funeral service to be held in jerusalem. he encouraged european jews to move back to israel in the aftermath of those attacks. as the funerals held overseas, security being stepped up in the u.s., extra security around federal buildings at a jewish museum in new york and growing concern about possible attacks here. terrorist sympathizers hacked the pentagon's twitter and youtube accounts threatening soldiers and posting isis propaganda. no classified information was released. the white house is apologizing for not having a stronger presence at sunday's unity march in paris. >> we do believe we should have sent somebody with the higher profile to the march just beyond the u.s. ambassador to france. >> the french are searching for six more suspects linked to last week's shooting. divers have recovered the

second black box from airasia flight 8501. the cockpit and voice recorder was freed from beneath one of the plane's wings. analysts in jakarta will download the data hopefully it will reveal crew's comments that may explain why the flight ri crashed. 162 people were on board. only 48 bodies have been recovered. health officials say seven more people who went to disneyland or came into contact with somebody who did has now come down with the measles. 26 people sickened in four different states. 22 of those cases came from california. officials say most of the patients visited disknowland or disney california adventure and others came into contact after going to disneyland. bank and casino are among the locations where the public may have become in contact with an infected person.

tweeted for someone to turn the shooters in. the task force is helping with the investigation. 4:36 a troubling trend is popping up at a south bay school. some eighth grade students are purposely overdosing on cold medicine. three girls at britton middle school in morgan hill were rushed to the hospital after taking up to 12 one-a-day tablets, known as triple c, a street name for overdosing on cough, cold and congestion medicine which causes hallucination and intoxication symptoms. the kids are finding out about this in social media. the girls are÷m expected to recover and will not face charges but the school may take disciplinary action. are we going to allow druids? >> i'm opposed to people praying

in the city property on any government office. >> as you heard there, a spirited crowd voiced their opinions in concord last night as the committee discussed whether prayers should be given at the beginning of city council meetings. city councilman wants to reinstate that practice which was abandoned about 40 years ago over allegations the city was giving preference to some religions and excluding others. most were opposed to the idea. ultimately the committee decided not to present the issue to the full council. a cop scandal that rocked the east bay is now in a book called "the setup." two cops were convicted of dealing drugs and orchestrating other crimes and now serving time in federal prison. the author of the book happened upon the story after writing a magazine feature on butler's private investigation business back in 2011.

crooks tells the bay area news group he's already been approached about making the book into a movie. >> interesting. if we are writing our own book for this morning it might be "san francisco bay area finding fog" something to that effect. good morning, christina. >> just finding your surroundings will be unfamiliar this morning. the fog is really thick out there. good morning to you, sam, laura, everybody at home. temperatures are mild but in addition to low visibility you'll find some slick spots out there, it's wet outside our parking lot. one of the usual suspects to see the fog the bay bridge we're seeing that there but not in the places we're accustomed to getting this low in terms of visibility. now we have a new crash to report. we'll get to that in a moment. let's talk about your weather today, it will be lovely later on today, better air quality. we is did not break that record. you can have a fire without it being illegal but we urge you if you don't have to, please don't

unless it is your only source of heat. the onshore fog is a good indication we'll have a lot better air quality tomorrow. sunny and mild through friday and weekend showers are in the works, we'll show you who has the best chance of seeing those in my next report. let's switch gears and they can your drive. things are really light but doesn't matter. you want to give yourself extra time. the fog is dangerous. we don't know if this is fog related but i passed this area on my way to work and could only see a couple hundred feet. this is northbound 87 at skyfort. there is a person on the right-hand side of the road so travel cautiously through here. we'll keep you up to date. keep in mind that fog is thick and will only get worse before it gets better. more on that coming up, back to you sam and laura. >> thank you, christina. a new cost-cutting area could have a major impact for an airline in the pay area.

welcome back. time is 4:44. live look right now at 101 and hard to make out exactly what the road conditions look like. certainly we see headlights but not much else. lot of fog surrounding the area. christina will tell us how it will impact your commute as well as the weather forecast moving forward. fire officials are calling this three-alarm fire under new york's penn station suspicion. more than 100 firefighters battled the fire that took over two levels of the construction site of the station earlier this morning. trains coming in and out were delayed and reopened hours later. two firefighters were injured. that fire caused considerable structural damage to the station. we'll have more on as the morning progresses. the ntsb is investigating a subway accident in washington,

d.c., that left one woman dead and dozens more injured. smoke filled the train headed to virginia yesterday. some passengers were trapped for as long as 40 minutes before they could get out. dozens suffered from smoke inhalation and two in critical condition. >> a gentleman went into seizures. there were two unconscious people that i saw pulled off the train by good samaritans that were carrying them and a lot of people just couldn't stop coughing. >> investigators are not sure why the train stopped but the fire was caused by an electricity related problem. the train line will remain closed today. a deluge captured on video that laid waste to a gas station. watch as the water gushes from the water main break, it brings down the gas station's awning. it happened in tuscaloosa, ohm ohm. water shot through into the air. luckily no one was hurt. the break was apparently

triggered by bad weather rolling through the midwest. united airlines considering outsourcing jobs at 28 different airports including one right here in the bay area. it's a cost-cutting effort that could impact nearly 2,000 workers. those jobs include baggage handlers and engaging customer service agents. on the list of airports, mineta airport in san jose. it's unclear how much the airline would save through outsourcing. if it happens workers have the option to transfer to other airports based on seniority. later today united and its union will negotiate on ways to keep the workers within the airline. it is 4:46. wall street awaits a report that may shape this year's outlook. let's luturn to landon dowdy li at cnbc world headquarters. >> good morning to you. futures are higher as the stocks fell for a second straight day on monday. the energy sector leading the decline as oil prices dropped to their lowest levels since 2009

and down again today trading below $45 a barrel. there's no major economic data today but invests may focus on earnings news as alcoa reported positive results last night. the nasdaq losing 39 to 4664. a report out today could confirm job opportunities are improving. the data from the labor department details the number of job openings hire, quits, and layoffs are at the highest level since 2001 and more competition for certain jobs such as construction. the number of quits is interesting to watch. when more people voluntarily leave their job it's a sign they're willing to trade stability for career opportunities and even possibly higher pay. and the pc market is struggling following two years of falling sales. reports say the sector may be leveling off. they didn't fall as much as feared during the last quarter

sam? >> i've dabbled. i'm not going back. >> my goodness, that paints a pretty picture on a tuesday morning. whatever you like to do, you can get outdoors with a clean conscience today and i have to tell you, you have much better air quality out there and also you can have a fire. it's not illegal to burn even though i said not to. return of upshore flow for us means pbetter air quality but unfortunately also very thick fog. it's really thick in the san jose area, starting to develop and settle in from pleasanton to the delta and look at this tulle fog, it is really thick trying to get into fresno, sacramento or headed farther south. headed into bakersfield what a treacherous drive you have ahead of you. i worked there for several years. when you see this fog you tend to get the pile-ups so want to keep a good space cushion between you and the car ahead of you. stay nice and alert, a good idea

4:53. you might still feel a little foggy, but these guys were crystal clear, did not take long for celebrations at ohio state university to get out of hand after last night's college football playoff championship game. police had to use tear gas and pepper spray to disperse the students celebrating the buckeyes win over the oregon ducks. you can see students lighting this couch on fire as people filled the streets and the sidewalks. total of 30 to 40 dumpsters also set on fire. police say nearly 8,000 students forced their way back into ohio stadium and tore down a goal post. police made a number of arrests in the process. no word yet on injuries. as for the game itself it was not much of a contest. the buckeyes made the oregon ducks look like, well, lame ducks. some key mistakes put oregon behind the eight ball and running back ezekiel elliott running all over the ducks' defense. he gained 265 yards from

candy, christina. i don't know where this ranks with your panaplea. >> that fog is eggstra thick and we have a couple of incidents to report this morning. i want to talk about the south bay specifically. it is really thick and now we have two crashes in the same we told with yabout this one northbound 87 at skyport. this one is a spin out report northbound 280 at 87 this morning, it's very thick and you don't want to have any unnecessary accidents so it's not one of the mornings you want to try to dilly daldally. drive with the low beams on, headlights only, do not stop on the highway. get off the highway and find a nice lit parking spot and that's the best way for you to stay safe. when you put yourself on the side of the highway you're just
