. good morning. coming up on "early today," 3 million copies of "charlie hebdo" hit news stands this morning, but could it trigger backlash. a plot to kill the speaker of the house is thwarted by authorities. a million dollar citrus fire puts firefighters to the test. the sexiest man alive was all wet with jimmy fallon. it's wednesday, january 14th. "early today" starts right now. good morning. i'm francis rivera. in france the controversial new edition of "charlie hebdo" magazine is sold out. that's 3 million copies with the cover showing the prophet muhammad. it happened within the first couple hours of hitting the newsstand. now publishers are scrambling to print an additional 2 million

copies. this comes as concern grows. an influential islamic group in egypt has already warned. yemen's top al queda leader says they orchestrated the attack at "charlie hebdo." french officials say the weapons came from abroad and they're now looking at people who provided the three gunmen with substantial financial backing. what's happening in paris is having an impact at home. lawyers for dzhokhar tsarnaev are asking to delay jury selection for a month because of comparisons being made to the two attacks including the comparison of brothers being involved in each attack. meanwhile the fight against isis intensifies. senate majority leader mitch mcconnell and others met with president obama yesterday. senator mcconnell said the president is working on sending congress a new authorization for the use of military force against isis. this as french lawmakers voted to extend air strikes against

isis in iraq. nbc's ron allen is in paris. ron, lots of reaction to this new issue. >> good morning, francis. here is the new edition of "charlie hebdo." we're not showing you the entire magazine because it's so controversial. some viewers may find it offensive. it predicts the prophet muhammad in an unflattering light. it's satire irreverent. they call themselves irresponsible. they are trying to poke humor, trying to poke fun, trying to mock terrorists. there are a lot of jihadi cartoons mocking them. for example, a cartoon where two jihadis arrive in syria, they have college degrees. they're asked what do they do. they're told just go start cleaning the toilets. it's that sort of humor that many people might not quite get. but the point is they are trying to say that they can say anything they are all about freedom of expression, freedom of religion. this is their country, their

heritage. it's also a tribute to the survivors and the victims of the attack. "charlie hebdo" saying they will continue to be what they have been going forward. this morning on the investigation there's a new videotape surfaced from al qaeda in yemen claiming responsibility for the attacks of last week not a big surprise because some of the gunmen have been linked to that group. also in paris, security still at its highest alert, 10,000 military on the streets at sensitive sites like religious centers, mosques, synagogues also tourist sites. it's not unusual to see now on any given day, tourists to see military heavy security. it's going to be that way for some time in many regions, many french men are wondering how much longer this will go on. when will authorities be able to get to the bottom of this. the threat is still very real people still very anxious, concerned about the danger. >> ron allen for us in paris, thank you. a former ohio bartender facing charges for threatening to kill house speaker john boehner. michael robert hoyte who worked

at a country club frequented by the house speaker has been indicted on charges of threatening to poison boehner's drinks. tracie potts is live in washington for us. what more can you tell us? >> reporter: we're learning a lot more because the grand jury indictments have been unsealed. apparently michael hoyte had a history of treatment for psychiatric problems, was apparently either going to shoot or poison the drinks of the speaker and thought that he would tell police he was jesus and speaker boehner was responsible for ebola. they found lots of writings in his home about that. he also had been e-mailing frequently boehner's wife. his mother according to the court papers found a gun in the house and removed it because she was concerned about her son's mental state. authorities also found an assault rifle and some ammunition in that home. now the concern is will he be getting out of the hospital. he was hospitalized for psychiatric evaluation a 45-day

hold. that mental exam expected to be up in just a few weeks. authorities say he's still a threat. >> tracie potts for us in washington, d.c. thank you very much. overnight, a colossal fire near fresno california. this is what happens when a million empty boxes and 2,000 carrying pallets go up in phthalates. it happened at a sunkist grower packing facility. it took 50 firefighters to contain it. one fire official said it could be hours until the blaze is actually inder control. there were no reported injuries and no oranges were harmed either. still the damage could cost a million dollars. no word yet on a possible cause. dash cam video after a police involved fatal shooting is going viral. this officer's reaction after firing shots at a suspect and killing him. in the video he's heard telling a colleague that he thought the suspect who was high on meth was going to pull a gun on him. lawyers used the video in court last week to clear the police officer of wrongdoing.

in virginia an ex-state lawmaker cooling his heels in jail because of a sex scandal involving a teenager actually got his job back. richmond democrat joe morrissey won the seat he vacated following his december conviction. he's serving a six-month sentence of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. the democrat took 42% of the vote. he denies allegations he had sex with a 17-year-old receptionist from his law firm. morrissey will be allowed out of jail for work only until his sentence is complete. take a look at this time lapse video here. the bay bridge appears to be floating in the clouds yesterday morning. how cool is that? the bridge which connects san francisco and oakland was covered in a thick layer of fog for more than two hours. hopefully drivers didn't have any problems with that. nbc meteorologist bill karins -- >> that's beautiful. that's like the iconic shot of the golden gate bridge in the

fog. i'd love to see that in person. good morning to you francis and everybody else. the cold has been the story this winter. now everyone is getting a little bit of a break which is nice. as far as the northwest goes the northern rockies, it's not too bad. it's cool but not exactly cold. we do have a change coming in the weather pattern. pretty dry as of late. it's been since mid december since we got in a wet soaking pattern again. it looks like we could start to resemble a pattern, not so much for central california mostly northern california northwest. today high pressure protects you. one storm off the coast, another one further off the coast. this will change the weather pattern as we introduce a more active jet stream into the northwest. today 49 in seattle, 47 in portland. we're sunny, cool and crisp in the mornings. l.a. san diego, everywhere in between, phoenix you look nice. same with vegas. as we head towards thursday, rain moves into the northwest and southern portions of oregon. over the next seven days we

leading the news in u.s.a. today, video shows young boy executing alleged spies. nbc news has chosen not to air the propaganda video that appears to show him shooting two russian men. the boy has appeared in other islamic state propaganda videos saying he was from kazakhstan and wanted to grow up to kill infidels. facebook is teaming up with the national center for missing and exploited children to provide amber alerts in targeted search areas after a child has been abducted. breaking news from the international space station. the u.s. side has been evacuated because of a possible ammonia leak. nasa says the crew is safe and they're isolated on the russian side of the station.
