6:00 am
sunny and mild for tomorrow. we're getting close to that weekend. and we have a big pattern change on the way. i'm going to tell you all about it for your specific microclimate in just moments. tracking those hot spots on the roadway. we do have an incident to tell you about that you'll want to know about. >> let's take a live look outside on this wednesday morning. a clear look. it's january 14th. this is "today in the bay." >> from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." >> a very good wednesday morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. >> we mentioned an update to breaking news. crews slowly gaining the upper hand. they've made progress on an aggressive fire in downtown san jose. as far as location is concerned, this is happening right by highway 87.
6:01 am
>> it appears the door to the building was forced open? >> reporter: that's right. as in many of the abandoned vehicles, the homeless sometimes break in to keep warm and stay out of the elements, but san jose fire tells me that this was a tough one to battle. the roof of an abandoned warehouse collapsed and crews had to enter the building -- actually, could not enter the building to fight the fire. they had to take a defensive stance and fight frit the outside. the fire -- three-alarm fire broke out at about a quarter to 4:00 this morning. it wasn't until a little after 5:00 that firefighters put out the fire. a san jose police officer says he was in the area driving by when he saw the fire and reported it in. investigators are looking into the possibility that homeless people started this fire.
6:02 am
squatters tend to break into abandoned buildings to keep warm from the elements. squatters could have started a campfire to keep warm. witnesses told investigators that they saw people fleeing the building. firefighters hope they got out safely. >> so with an abandoned warehouse, that's one of the things we're concerned about, that people were squatting or sleeping in there and potentially started a fire. so our concern is we hope everybody got out safely. by the time we arrived, if anybody had been inside, they would not have survived. >> firefighters are waiting for daylight so they can inspect the building to see if it is safe to go in. as you can imagine, such a great fire probably has lessened the integrity of the building. complicating things, a transformer did explode at one point. so crews had to be extra, extra careful to make sure to work around the downed wires. everything now, as you can see back live on the scene, seems to
6:03 am
be okay. just one of the three ladder trucks is just spraying water on the abandoned warehouse. they are doing that to keep an eye to make sure hot spots don't flare up and start another fire. crews are keeping an eye on things at the moment. they are waiting for daylight. westbound julian is closed to traffic. we understand that drug court is close by here, but the fire captain doesn't believe that that will be affected, and that court should be starting like normal and traffic shouldn't be affected. he believes just this one area a little ways from downtown will be closed, so that should not affect workers trying to get into their offices. live in downtown, nanette miranda. >> the smoke could be a little bit of a distraction out there, taking another live look toward the center of the screen.
6:04 am
some of the smoke has dissipated as of now. but we want to bring in anthony slaughter. it could impact the drive. it sounds like firefighters are saying it's not really a big concentrated area, but it does go right by 87. >> even driving in, you could see the smoke. i thought it was fog driving in because it was so expansive across the entire sky. what we're finding right now is traffic is slowing on 87, just a little bit. but we don't have heavy traffic flow right now. so not all that bad. but on 101, this is really the corridor that we've been seeing the most, slowing traffic speeds down to 20 miles an hour. this is already a slow spot to begin with. once you get past the smoke, things do start to clear out. so really, i think folks watching the smoke and trying to figure out what that is in the sky will really cause those slow speeds. so definitely make sure you're paying attention to the folks in front of you as you get out and about on those roadways. let's show you what it's looking like on the traffic cam. you can see for yourself, it's not all that slow from time to time. the cars do start to move like
6:05 am
what we're lacking at right now. but every now and again, you get a slow push of cars, as traffic starts to stack up, so this is really beginning to be one of those spots on 101 and also on 87 that we'll be watching. guys, back to you. >> thank you very much, anthony. we'll have updates on this story all morning long, as the investigation continues, nanette miranda will join us at 6:30. christina loren monitoring air quality as well. we'll check in with her in moments. an investigation is under way at nasa over what set off an alarm on the international space station. some scary moments earlier, forcing one side to evacuate. the alarm sounded around 1:00 in the morning, indicating there could be an ammonium leak on the u.s. side of the station. nasa engineers say there was an increase of pressure around that time, but no actual prf of a leak. everybody onboard, meantime, is safe.oof of a

heavy traffic, especially across the bay bridge. this is where the lights have been on for about 30 minutes. you can see traffic is really stacking up, coming in from the approach. now let's also show you what's happening as we get a little bit further down into fremont. traffic is moving smoothly, but we do have a couple accidents. you can see that on our traffic map. one at 880 at thornton and other at mowry avenue. so both suddens are going to continue to cause some slowing as you head through the heyward fremont area. a very disturbing discovery. a san jose firefighter falling into a military style booby trap while responding to flames.

getting plenty of attention here in the bah bay area. the design of the train system in washington, d.c. is very similar to that of bart. >> stephanie chuang joining us now from daily city with all of these parallels. what do bart officials hope to learn? good morning. >> reporter: that's right. good morning, sam and laura. those images pretty troubling. these are caused by electrical malfunctions on the third rail that can lead to arcing or sparking. and bart saying that it has happened on its systems here in the bay area. federal investigators saying that's what caused the deadly incident in d.c. on monday, passengers in d.c. were stranded after smoke filled their metro train. the smoke so thick it choked the passengers and even killed one woman, sending more than 80 to the hospital. something similar happened at the san francisco civic center station back in september 2012. this station filled with smoke. bart was able to safely evacuate passengers. we spoke with a woman who says she's been in a smoky bart train

news. we're talking about the drought and some bad news when it comes to the drought, but i love pointing this out to you. whenever people are challenged technologically, we start to step up our game here in the silicon valley, which is why snow making technology has improved so much. you know, these resorts, they want to stay up and running, and good news is, it's cold enough to continue to make that snow. we still have 44 inches at the base, so over a three and a half-foot base at squaw valley and alpine meadows, and if you're like me, you've probably been itching to get up to tahoe. i know i want to get out there. laura's nodding her head. they have 41 runs open at squaw, and 50 at alpine meadows, which is fantastic. we had a really active december. now, as we get into the next couple days, we are going to see our pattern change. they'll get a little bit of light snowfall up in tahoe. we'll get some light rainfall here in the bay area. but the storm system looks like it's going to speed up a little bit. and our next rain chance is actually moving in as of friday. that's a new development as of
6:19 am
this morning. that's what we're seeing now from this model that i trust the most, called rpm, and it's looking good for showers as of friday. temperatures are beginning to be comfortable this afternoon. you can get out there, you can ride your bike, go for a hike, anything you like to do when it's nice and sunny out. hazy sunshine. good to moderate air quality. all across the bay area, we're talking about temperatures in the mid 60s for today. heart to beat that. typically 58 degrees in san jose. 64 for the peninsula. 65 degrees in the east bay. 64 for the north bay. dry week, showers on the way for saturday. we meet back here friday morning, maybe a little activity through napa valley. nothing heavy, but enough to really purify our air quality. we definitely need that. we're going to keep this chance beginning to about 20% to 30% for the entire bay area.

hebdo" survivors issue, which is becoming quite a commodity. good morning. >> as you might imagine, even with that increase in circulation, there is more demand than supply, so it's no surprise that copies of that magazine that usually go for $3.50 are now listed for much more than that on e-bay. we found one where the bidding has surpassed $14,000. but our partners at cnbc found one on e-bay's french website listed at more than $117,000. also today, a claim of responsibility by the leader of al qaeda in yemen. in a video posted on youtube and verified by nbc news, the leader of al qaeda in yemen and al qaeda's number two worldwide said it chose the target, laid the plan, and financed the operation as an act of vengeance for the newspaper's disrespect to the prophet muhammad. the shooters also invoked muhammad on the day of the massacre as "charlie hebdo." this is new video released by french police in which you could

6:55 am
with nbc bay area said they have no idea what they would have to do in case of emergency, in case maybe one of their trains filled up with smoke. so bart saying the incident in d.c. on monday, a great reminder there are lessons it can learn. we're talking about electrical malfunctions on the third rail that can cause potentially dangerous sparking, also known as arcing, which then can lead to a lot of smoke, and that's what federal investigators say happened in d.c. thick, black smoke filling a busy subway station, stranding riders after their train stopped in a tunnel. the incident killed one woman, a mother of two. bart says arcing at its france civic center station back in september 2012 also filled that station with smoke, but was able to safely evacuate passengers. no reported injuries then. in d.c., there are reports people self-evacuated, a move bart stresses will put others in danger. >> you want to avoid people opening that emergency latch to open door. the problem with that is the train operator may be very close
6:56 am
to moving that train out of the area, and if you open the emergency latch door, it's beginning to cause that train to not move. >> reporter: in case of emergency, bart says talk to your train operator. if you can't hear directions, there is an intercom on every car. just press that button and ask to have the volume in your car turned up. the new trains arriving late next year have a brand-new state of the art p.a. system replacing the old one. live in daly city, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> important information to keep in mind. thank you, stephanie. new this morning, an investigation is under way at nasa over what set off an alarm on the international space station, forcing one side to evacuate. the alarm sounded around 1:00 in the morning indicating there was an ammonia leak on the u.s. side of the station. nasa engineers say there was an increase of pressure around that time, but there's no proof of an actual leak. everyone onboard is safe. no word if it was actually a leak or a faulty censer that
