arrested for wanting to unleash an all-out assault on the capital. nbc's correspondent pete williams reports. the fbi says 20-year-old christopher lee cornell of green township, ohio wanted to set off pipe bombs at the u.s. capital and shoot people as they fled. investigators say he came to their attention last august when he posted pro isis messages on twitter using an alias. court documents say he discussed his plans with the man he thought was sympathetic but who turned out to be working undercover for the fbi. according to investigators, cornell said that former al qaeda figurer anwar al awlaki and others expressed the view this kind of jihad was the right thing to do. he was arrested after he bought assault rifles like this and 600 rounds of ammunition. >> spent at least enough time with these particular officers to know i was in good hands. they knew what they were doing and exude add lot of confidence. >> that was nbc's justice

correspondent pete williams reporting. >> the fbi says there was never any danger because cornell was being watched. he also never built any pipe bombs. this morning, here is what cornell's father is saying. >> he never showed any signs of any kind of violence or anything. quiet, shy, good kid. >> there have been no comments from his public defender. his first court appearance is tomorrow. now to the latest in paris. secretary of state john kerry will arrive in the city this evening. he'll also take part in talks on countering extremist violence. his arrival comes amid mixed reaction to controversial edition of the "charlie hebdo" magazine. it sold out 3 million copies within the first two hours yesterday. a copy on the ebay sold for $1700,000 u.s. dollars. now the city is bracing for backlash because of the publication's depiction of prophet muhammad on the cover. police arrested 54 people for

the deadly attacks as france remains on its highest state of alert. now back to you. >> nbc's ron allen reporting from paris. the cliffhanger is over in every sense. a pair of americans have climbed their way into history. had image says it all, reaching the top of the el capitan on wednesday. they are the first to ever free climb it using their only hands and feet. a 3,000 foot wall in yosemite is one of the hardest rock climbs in the world. their climb took 19 days. this morning pope francis is in the philippines. what a welcome there. it is the first visit to the philippines by a pontiff in 20 years. the stop is part of his trip to asia. outside the airport, crowds lined the streets to catch a glimpse of him. security for his visit is tight, as you can imagine. nearly 40,000 police and soldiers are being used. some have even been ordered to wear diapers during their long

europe on the right. winds have been so strong some recent flights new york to london arrived an hour earlier than usual. now a look at the weather, nbc meteorologist bill karins is here with us. you hear about the delays but nice when the lift helps you along. >> of course if you're going the other way, you're an hour late. fascinating storms in the atlantic. nothing like that in the west. pretty quiet across the country. where we are in this winter we're about halfway through my winter. i consider december january, february. we're in the middle of january. 48% of the country covered with snow. we haven't had a lot of snow this winter in the mid-atlantic north, southern portions of new england and a lot of snow unfortunately throughout the cascades sierra mountains. rockies okay northern rockies. areas we need it a lot, especially california we got some in december. every since then it's been relatively dry. this latest storm is going to bring rain and snow up to the cascades. we will see northern rockies getting hit again first with rain and eventually snow in the

lawyers. some two dozen women came forward with allegations cosby sexually assaulted them some while drugged. cosby has never been charged with a crime and through his attorneys has denied all allegations. in philadelphia firefighters work into the night to put out an aggressive fire at this 140-year-old prison. but in the end, the prison was a total loss. officials were forced to evacuate 200 inmates and staff and now they are being transferred to nearby prison. officials are looking into the cause. there were no reported injuries. heroin epidemic isn't going away. deaths linked to heroin jumped 39% since 2012. the world health organization has been pushing a drug that could reverse overdoses and save lives. it could be the diet breakthrough. scientists are working on a new diet pill that will trick your body into thinking you've already eaten. not only that the pill will burn excess fat from the food you do eat. let's get down to business now with cnbc.
