i'm sam brock. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. let's also bring in meteorologist christina loren for a look at the forecast. >> good morning, laura, sam, everybody at home. it's going to be another gorgeous day. it is a spare the air day, the only thing we don't love. little bit of fog out there but overall temperatures comfortable. 45 degrees in san carlos, 43 in san jose and we're on our way to the 60s and 70s. more on that coming up. let's welcome in anthony slaughter. >> good morning to you. this is dublin behind me. you get an idea of how the commute will be going through the altamont pass. visibility less than a quarter of a mile. take it easy if you're traveling through this region. the yellow box noted north of livermore, pleasanton and san ramon, that is the fog the computer is detecting. otherwise lots of green on the map, traffic is still light and this area we'll watch closely as the traffic continues to build

and the fog continues to thicken. back to you guys. >> good luck to the drivers. a follow-up to a scary situation at a bay area macy's. car plows through the front doors, sending six people to the hospital as shoppers have to run for cover. it happened last night a little bit before 4:00 at the macy's in the new park mall. the car barreled through the glass doors going for some 50 feet. man on the sidewalk was dragged into the store in the process and critically injured. two people inside the store were also injured along with the driver and two passengers in her car. authorities say the driver is a 63-year-old woman whom they believe something happened to just before that accident. >> there was a vehicle traveling down this parking lot, this road right here and the driver had some type of medical issue, didn't stop. >> it should be noted that police do not believe the driver was under the influence. we'll have a live update from

the mall coming up in about 30 minutes. this morning an east bay woman and three accomplices are facing atempted murder charges accused of attacking her ex-boyfriend and another woman. the victim is a 19-year-old woman and 20-year-old man told police a man shot at them at a pleasanton apartment complex tuesday. three other people including the victim's ex-girlfriend threatened them with baseball bats. the victims got away but not before one of at taerks bashed in the woman's rear window. the suspects were arrested hours after the attack. police say it stemmed from a dispute between the victim and his ex-girlfriend. continuing coverage now of the bay area's coaching carousel envelope style. both bay area teams rolling out new coaches like new luxury automobiles. the oakland raiders have hired east bay native jack del rios and the 49ers promote in-house coach tomsula. he faces a daunting task of

replacing jim harbaugh, who left for the university of michigan after a successful four-year stint with the niners. 46-year-old tomsula has been with san francisco for eight years. he served as defensive line coach under three separate head coaches. ceo jed york calls tomsula the right man to lead the team. niners fans are trying to keep an open mind. >> never heard about him but being with the organization this long he'll be fine. >> he's been quiet and getting the job done. we've had a strong defense, we can see how it will carry over. i'm hoping. we'll see. >> tomsula has been a head coach before with the line fire football team in germany. the niners will build a new staff around tomsula with all but one of the current coaches said to be leaving the team. the raiders have agreed to hire jack del rio away from the denver broncos. del rio grew up in the east bay.

he's been denver's defensive coordinator the past two seasons. before that, the jacksonville jaguars head coach. he played 12 seasons in the nfl. he's replacing interim head coach tony sparano. del rio will be the sixth head coach for the raiders since 2007. raider nation in the east bay already giving del rio a warm welcome. photo tweeted by ricky's sports bar. it reads "welcome home coach del rio." they have season tickets, those will come in handy. those are expected to introduce him on friday. learn more about the bay area's newest head coach by visiting our website, head to want and click on the sports tab. you'll find reaction from around the league. happening today, san francisco mayor ed lee is going to unveil his plans for the new

year. today he'll deliver his state of the city address. he has already planned to expand funding for preschools and add more muni light rail vehicles. last year his priorities included raising the minimum wage, saving city college and getting rid of sunday parking meters. today's speech is expected to begin at about 10:00 this morning. it's a pretty smelly situation for south bay residents trying to prevent a nearby landfill from getting larger. they're trying to block the expansion of the newby island dump in milpitas. they want the san jose planning commission to block the permit until the company comes up with a way to stop the smell. commission members say people should submit their comments in writing in order to be considered. a fire that started in the south bay in a carport ended up leaving six people looking for somewhere else to stay.

it happened on north like drive in west san jose. flames destroyed two cars and spread to an apartment building. luckily no one was hurt. firefighters say two units were damaged. no word yet on a cause. happening today, a bay area climber and his friend are going to share their experience of what it was like climbing to the top of the world's toughest big wall rock climb. jubilation, the victory pose there. those were cheers from family and friends who watched a live video feed of them making it to the top of el captain yesterday. >> indescribable. i'm so proud of him. just bursting. >> proud parents, the two spent the last 19 days, almost a full three weeks climbing the 3,000 foot vertical wall with their bare hands. their finish was delayed hours after jorgeson actually fell

earl whier in the day. both men pushed through making climbing history. he told the "new york times" "i wanted to see what i was capable was and this was the biggest canvas and the most audacious project i could join and see to the finish." >> many steps for them. just five bay area cities, one step closer to winning a $5 million prize for energy efficiency. they are competing with 45 other cities chosen by georgetown university to demonstrate the best ways to lower energy costs. the money will be awarded to the city that most effectively reduces electric and gas consumption in its municipal and school buildings over a two-year period. the competition runs for another two years. maybe the weather will help cooperate as well. >> if it's warming up, that is a good thing. we'll take that and i think you're talking about a little bit of rainwater in our future. christina, good morning. >> sam, laura, another good

thing, the weekend. the weekend is almost upon us and we have some showers to clean out that air quality as we get into your all-important weekend but thanks for joining us this morning, and every weekday morning. the difference between today and yesterday that, fog is back. it is thick in spots and i can tell you we have another spare the air day. by tomorrow much better air quality with the area of low pressure starting to bring light shower activity to the bay area. we have a 40% chance for rain as we head through tomorrow and we'll lower that to a 10% chance, just with every single day next week. these are your highs today, lovely conditions persist, 66 degrees in the south bay, 64 on the we nips peninsula and 65 de the east bay where my oakland raiders have a brand new coach. we're excited about it. anthony, the bay area football team? >> the 49ers, who else? even before i moved here, heard about them and being in the

south bay got to be a 49ers fan, right? the north bay, i want to take you to the san rafael cam. you can see the cars looking at the shot and it looks like some of the cars are driving in slow motion when compared to some of the other cameras because the fog is very dense across the north bay. you can see on our traffic map all of the yellow that denotes dense fog and we have a small accident 880 southbound at franklin street, not really causing any headaches. notice how expansive that fog something through walnut creek and san ramon and updating over towards livermore and pleasanton. take it easy. as you step outside i'll show you this tub lin shot how fast the cars are going in this shot, quite different from how folks are traveling in the north bay. take it easy folks in the east bay, it is very dang ruerous ou there this morning. 4:40 now. downtown san jose seeing a bit of a bust when it comes to new business after seeing a boom. one thing that may be sending most of the merchants away.

coming up on 4:44 on your thursday morning, that weekend becoming ever so close in your vision right now, a live look at san jose, in the very early morning hours and a nice start so far to your day. authorities say someone was planning an attack on u.s. soil very similar, that deadly attack on the khan business parliament building last fall. authorities arrested an ohio man. undercover officers caught 20-year-old christopher cornell buying two assault type rifles and 600 rounds of ammunition, 600. police say that cornell tweeted about isis propaganda videos. >> never showed any signs of any kind of violence or anything. i mean, quiet, shy, good kid. >> the fbi has been looking at

christopher cornell since last year. they say he had saved money but he hadn't actually made any bombs yet. this morning a global effort is under way to reduce violence in the world's deadliest country. the u.n. secretary-general is on a two-day mission to set up a human rights office in honduras. the secretary met with the president of honduras to discuss citizen security, drug trafficking and organized crime in the region. honduras has the highest homicide rate of any of the nation. 99% of the murders also go unpunished. president obama renewing the push for paid sick time for millions of working congress. today the president will require companies to offer up to seven days of paid sick leave every year and ask congress for more than $2 billion to help states create paid family and medical leave programs. in addition he'll propose legislation providing federal workers with up to six weeks of paid leave after the birth of a child. only three states, including

california, offer paid family and medical leave. a new shift is under way in san jose. after seeing a business boom in downtown some shops and restaurants are leaving the city's hubs saying it's too dangerous. restaurant and lounge and sports bar recently closed. statement says it will "reopen in a safer, cleaner upscale location." not everyone agrees with the dismissal depiction. >> it's not too dangerous. the problem is that everybody perceives it like that because of word of mouth or something that happened. >> it's also looking to posting a for lease sign in the window last week. the manager says they hope to move closer to downtown for core business to increase. a new study says that half of california's new wells involved some form of fracking. that controversial practice of fracking has been responsible for one-fifth of all the gas and oil production in the last decade in california. the report by independent

scientists was prepared because of a state law that took effect last year. the state plans to do future studies to look at the environmental impact of fracking, a much discussed issue nationally. yesterday's report found that roughly half of the 300 wells drilled in the state of california involved fracking. >> 4:47, four down session answer counting for stocks which took another painful hit yesterday. for a look at our futures and trading, we turn to landon dowdy live at cnbc world headquarters. good morning to you, landon. >> law camera, good morning to you. the markets will try to break a four-day losing streak. stocks fell on a disappointing report on it retail sales last month. oil prices rallied posting their best day since 2012. look for data on unemployment and earnings from bank of america and citigroup. the dow closing down to 17,427 and the nasdaq falling to 4639.

samsung and blackberry are denying a report that he held talks about a possible merger. reuters says samsung offered to buy blackberry for as much as $7.5 billion. samsung is the top smartphone maker but blackberry is strong in the corporate market as the secure network handles e-mail traffic for thousands of companies across the world. the "wall street journal" says the struggling electronics retailer is talking with a private investment firm about buying its assets out of chapter 11 but there's no guarantee a deal will be struck. the company is looking for funding while in bankruptcy. radio shack warned last year that a bankruptcy was possible. >> thanks so much, landon. 4:48, we've been talking about the booming and busting. let's check in with meteorologist christina loren, i

hope we have a boom this weekend. >> i think that's subject to what you like. if you like great weather, boom, we'll get that. if you want the rain, kind of a bust when it comes to the shower activity we're expecting. i'll show you in moments. 43 degrees in the south bay. east bay is at 45 and we're starting out rather chilly in the north bay with some of the tulle fog creeping through the delta. watch out as you head out the door in the trivalley rather thick. it's not going to stay for long. we have this atmospheric mixing headed our way and as a result that's going to keep that fog from really settling in this morning. i think it will be clear by about 9:00 a.m. for the entire bay area. what i'm watching for is that chance for shower activity, nonetheless we have soupy conditions on the way as of tomorrow, a big pattern change, we have a lot of sunshine lately, everything is going to change, thursday into friday, we get some showers, but take a look at this, what the weekend holds. there's so many possibilities. 69 degrees in san jose on saturday. how's 71 degrees in santa cruz

anonymous, auctioning around 200 cards in total. 3vtúy you know your neighbor? an eight-foot alligator creating a lot of buzz after a los angeles animal control seized the gator from a backyard of a home. this is jackson, he was brought 37 years ago to a pet store in los angeles. his owner told us jackson wouldn't hurt a fly but it turns out not everyone is thrilled with him being there. neighbor reportedly tipped off animal services that led to a search warrant, ultimately jackson being taken by animal control. looks a little wide, hmm? officers say keeping wildlife without a permit is actually illegal in los angeles. anyone who has lost little pets are now kind of investigating. >> that would be fair. flies don't really add that much girth but i think small animals and other forms of meat might do the trick. let's check in with anthony now, 4:55. >> won't you meet my neighbor. >> man. i wonder how they found out the alligator was over there. scratching on the fence? >> a ball went over the fence?

>> oh, man. let's talk about this traffic this morning. you can see behind me dublin really socked in with fog this morning and that's really the case as we head through the next few hours, all the way from the altamont pass, once you get to dublin, eventually once you pass dublin, that 680 connector conditions do improve. the yellow is the fog on the map. you can see lots of green on the highways and that means traffic flow is moving without a problem, even across the peninsula. no problems 101 or 280, same for the bridges looking good there and the south bay no major problems here and the fog not really going to be an issue this morning and of course as we that fire yesterday in san jose, don't have any fires at least right now in the south bay, not causing any headaches. we'll take you outside and show you what it's like from our cam camera, you can see traffic flows without a problem and visibility is really good. guys, back to you. >> all good things. a fremont macy's will not be opening as usual this morning. car plowed through the front doors last night. we'll have a live update on the victim and also what may have
