6:01 am
>> stephanie chuang is at the macy's in newark. all that said, it could have been much worse. >> reporter: that's right, good morning to you, laura and sam. this happened around 5:00 last night, plenty of people are already off work at that time and it can get pretty busy here with crowds at new park mall. one man was standing outside on a sidewalk, when he was hit before the driver, then plowed through the front door. you see boarded up now at last check, that man is in critical condition still. up until about midnight there was still plenty of activities, six, seven hours after!iwz this happened, police say a 63-year-old woman, the driver suffered some sort of medical emergency behind the wheel in the parking lot, jumping the curb and barreling in her blue car through the entrance into the men's clothing area, stopping only after about 5 50 feet. there were no skid marks in the building indicating she hit the gas and only hit the brakes once inside. in addition to the man critically injured outside, two shoppers inside also were hurt.
6:02 am
>> a vehicle traveling down the parking lot, this road and the driver had some type of medical issue, didn't stop. >> six people were transported to local hospitals. i'm not quite sure of their medical conditions at this point. >> reporter: there were two passengers plus the driver inside that blue car and all three did go to the hospital. paramedics also examined two other people who witnessed the crash and said they suffered panic attacks. police here in newark do not suspect the driver was under the influence but again it is still under investigation. displays, racks, mannequins all toppled over and sent flying but so far it appears structurally nothing else was compromised. stephanie chuang, live in newark, "today in the bay." o6:02 right now. the raiders are gearing up to officially introduce new head coaches. the bay area's own jack del rio is coming home to lead the silver and black and the 49ers

picked from within choosing long time assistant coach jim tomsula. >> nannette miranda is joining us from levi's stadium. not a lot of people have knowledge about tomsula but he has some pretty big shoes to fill. >> reporter: definitely. i think fans were expecting a big splashy name. the 49ers looked within their own organization promoting within. his name is jim tomsula. the team will introduce him later today. many niner fans don't know him. he's been the team's defendive coach since 2007. tomsula is credited with developing a dominant defense which the past season ranked fifth in the nfl in total defense. the 46-year-old is popular in the newsroom, rather the lockerroom. ceo jed york described tomsula as a great teacher and mentor with a lot of class, after this 8-8 season fans say that all sounds great but the proof is in the performance.
6:04 am
>> being a line coach, we never heard about him so you know, also being with the organization this long he's going to be fine. >> i say get a better offense, get kap doing the better job he should be doing instead of horsing around waiting for the clock to run out on him and a few other things. if he moves this thing along a lull bit t will be a lot better. >> reporter: not to be overshadowed, the raiders also have a new head coach. they picked jack del rio from the east bay. he graduated from hayward high, and grew up a raiders fan. del rio becomes the sixth head coach for the silver and black since 2007. he'll be introduced tomorrow on friday, and this, too, is the team where fans hope can be turned around. nannette miranda for "today in the bay". >> it's going to be a big season next year. >> seems like an energetic guy. some fans are already welcoming del rio. this was tweeted out by ricky's sports bar in san leandro which raiders fans know well. the sign reading "welcome home coach del rio." >> we'll have much more on jack
6:05 am
del rio and jim tomsula later in the newscast. the 9ers will introduce tomsula this afternoon. we'll have complete coverage tonight on "nbc bay area news" at 5:00 and 6:00. a quick peek outside from the san bruno mountain, some of that fog present that anthony and christina have been talking about this week. >> will it get clear enough to head to the beach? christina loren turning not only to meteorology but seem to be my travel planner these days. >> you know, with conditions like this, laura, and here in the bay area, we know this is not exactly our tourist season. you can get out there and hit the beach and maybe have it all to yourself and yes, you like a little privacy on a beautiful pacific beach, you're going to get that opportunity as we head throughout this weekend. but yes, even if you want to go to tahoe, we got some nice conditions up there, because of our generous snowfall totals that we had earlier in december. now it's been a really dry month so far, and the rain chance that
6:06 am
we have that moves in tomorrow into saturday is not looking that great. we are going to get a little something out of this storm system, but not much. i'm going to show you that in a moment. you have to give yourself extra time if you're waking up with us this the trivalley. we have thick fog drifting around. you saw the picture from san bruno, starting to develop at this point. that's the case. the sun comes out, warms up the top player of low cloud cover and that's how fog clears from the top down. that's what we are expecting. as we head throughout the morning hours by 10:00 a.m. 41 degrees in the south bay. you're at 41 on the peninsula and 47 degrees comfortable conditions to kick off the day on the east shore. light showers are on the way for friday. i'll show you your futurecast in just moments. you might have to pull out your umbrella for one day and next week we have about a 10% chance for rain, each and every day but i think that's going to come more in the form of drizzle at the coast in particular. so i'll show you what's coming your way as we head throughout this weekend and next week in my
6:07 am
next report. first anthony is in for mike. good morning. >> good morning to you. the fog is very thick across the east bay. we want to show you the dublin cam, it's remaining very foggy. this is our worst spot because of visibility but the best spot because of traffic. we haven't had any accidents, kind of different from what we had yesterday. notice once you get past dublin the fog lightens up. 808 towards the 92 connector there is a small accident causing some slowing. in the south bay looking at some slowing in the typical spot 101 northbound moving past 880 and as we step outside and show you what it looks like not all that bad, from time to time you see the cars start to slow up but right now they are starting to speed up. over to palo alto no problems there up the peninsula, seems to be the main story. the beth news this morning the fog is isolated so it's not for everybody, just across the east bay. >> good to know. >> definitely speeding up if you're late for work which hopefully you're not.
6:08 am
of:07. pope francis making announcement with a california connection. we'll tell you about it. a settlement offered in the huge silicon valley wage theft scandal. we'll take a look coming up in business and tech. they climbed their way into history. we hear from the men who just completed the hardest rock climb ever attempted.

we're also hearing from santa rosa's own kevin jorgeson and his tommy caldwell. they reached the top of the wall with nothing but their hands and feet. >> today today's kris sanchez joins us now. the historic climb got the attention of the president. >> the president was so impressed with the free climb to the top of the don wall he said to the duo you remind us this anything is possible. nbc's hallie jackson was there as kevin jorgenson and partner tommy caldwell made it to the tipity top. she joins me now. it was exciting to watch it on this little screen. that's how you watched, too, from the valley floor. >> reporter: from the valley floor. we had a monitor set up 3,000 feet below where the guys summited, reached the top. their family was there, dozens of people huddled around our
6:12 am
screen to watch it live. it was an incredible feeling. there were a lot of tears as you might imagine, a real sense of elation, something very, very special. you talked about it, i heard you say the guys waking up in their warm beds. they're already up and at it again. they did a live interview for us on the "today" show, which you'll see, we talked to them a little bit. tommy and kevin are feel good but all the attention is surreal. remember they normally climb without the world watching, in this case as they popped champagne and hugged their wives and their girlfriends, even the white house was watching as president obama sending out that instagram message. history made after 19 days on the don wall, a project seven years coming. >> and they shared with us on social media, they were posting pictures and sending out progress reports. what's the main question you have for them? >> i have to tell you, just on the social media angle, we were talking a little bit off kament rah and i said it was great, we couldn't get a phone call out and you're up there tweeting. he said we streamed a movie on netflix and listened to pandora.
6:13 am
it boggles my mind. >> a little whiskey as well. maybe post that on air b&b. would fetch a high price. thank you, we look forward to the interview later on today. we'll hear from them also on the "today" show this morning. it was thrilling for reporters and spectators, imagine what it was like for the climbers' families. there were cheers from family and friends who watched a live feet of santa rosa's kevin jorgenson as he made it to the top of yosemite's el capitan. >> indescribable. i'm so proud of him. just bursting. >> that's mama, yes, that was kevin jorgenson's parents and this air sons have been climbing together for decades and this is the first time that they've met. she said her son was looking forward to that hot shower, but she confessed to us, that she was just looking forward to her
6:14 am
son making it to the top alive. president obama said to them again, he reminds us everything is possible and with he hope to hear more from them personally. they seem to be reserved. you don't live on a mountain by yourself if you're a social person but we're hoping to hear more from them this morning on the "today" show. >> how big were these backs, netflix streaming, ipads, whiskey, what else did they have inside? >> they're little, you keep it in your back pocket, i hear. >> staying away from that. >> thanks a lot. it's really fun to see how elated the family is as well. lawyers for four silicon valley's largest companies offered to settle a major lawsuit accusing them of nasty behavior. >> they're accused fixing people's salaries. >> one of silicon valley's low points. ceos of large companies including apple e-mailing each other, creating a kabal to keep people's wages low.
6:15 am
the case ended up as a class action lawsuit in front of judge lucy ko. apple, adobe, google and intel have offered $415 million to make this case go away and the lawyers for the 64,000 workers involved have agreed, but the judge would have to approve that and the last time companies offered a cesettlement for $324 million, judge ko said no, it was far too little. other news reports are the british prime minister david cameron will pressure president obama to join him in a call to outlaw or at least restrict apps that allow us to text each other without the government being able to read them. cameron says they're just too dangerous and can be used by terrorists. saudi arabia tomorrow will flog this man, raif babawi, a saudi blogger. the plan is to flog him 50 times
6:16 am
every friday. they did so last friday. now there's some reasonable criticism here, where are the world leaders when it comes to protecting the free speech of badawi? they've been notably silent or close to it, certainly not marching. much of his writings are still online. i thought i'd find a passage to read you, you'd get the idea of what this is about but they are so plagued but one of the ones that the courts had an issue with says secularism, the separation of church and state s the practical solution to lift countries out of the third world and into the first world. if i've offended anybody by that, i certainly apologize. >> it shows you how varied perspectives are and you were saying selected application of fighting for free speech an interesting take there. >> very much so. 6:16. here's a look at the other top story this is morning.
6:17 am
pope francis wants to cannize juniperoserra. president obama is renewing the push for paid sick time for millions of working parents. today the president will be calling on the congress to pass a measure requiring companies to offer up to seven days of paid sick leave every single year. he'll also be asking congress for more than $2 billion to help states create paid family and medical leave programs. six people were rushed to the hospital after a car plowed into a macy's in newark. firefighters think the driver might have suffered a medical mcbefore crashing into the store. one man was critically hurt. right now the driver is not facing any charges. the story that stephanie chuang continues to stay on top of, we'll check back in with her but for now what's cooking this morning on the friday eve, that is thursday morning and there are some people out and about,
6:18 am
if you can see your way through. >> it's a little birth day eve for sam brock as well, lots to celebrate this weekend. >> i know nothing of this. look at that, i didn't think she remembered. from a little bird. i didn't remember. >> no. i guess it's really not that important or relevant. >> i'm glad to know it is not old hat by any means but i want to know how old you are. i know where i can get that information as well. 6:18 now. whatever it is you have planned for this weekend, whether it's getting outdoors, maybe you have something planned with your family, or maybe you want to just celebrate sam brock like us, we have a good looking weekend headed your way. seven-day forecast scrolling at the bottom of your screen. if you cannot wait for your weekend numbers, they're always right there for you. we like to give you instantaneous information, so right now taking a live look at san francisco, and you can see clearly across the bay bridge for now, but we have seen some fog drifting around out there, so if you keep that in mind it's pretty thick especially through the trivalley and we are going to see that fog worsen before it gets better but temperatures are
6:19 am
not bad at all this morning, not too cold. 41 degrees in the south bay, 47 in the east bay. san francisco you're on your way to 62 degrees, well above average yet againing it's been beautiful. we hit that sweet stride of comfortable temperatures. here's the deal when it comes to the fog. clearing by 10:00 a.m., we'll see a nice, sunny finish and as we head through your friday a shower activity. futurecast not expecting a lot but enough to purify air quality. this is the place you might want to post up into the weekend, temperatures in the 70s santa cruz, really warm, lovely conditions as we get into this weekend. let me show you what's happening, high pressure in control keeping the storm to our north. throughout friday it moves off to the east, far enough to get a little bit of moisture as we head throughout the morning hours and tomorrow evening as well. we'll keep that chance going until about saturday morning and high pressure builds right back in. the storm track goes back to the north and for us that means we're going to see with that storm track sitting to our north
6:20 am
some drizzle next week. overall temperatures are going to be mild, well above average. getting outside, easy to do saturday and sunday, 69 degrees. in the south bay, 67 for sunday, you might be think being hiking. i might even go kayaking this weekend. it's going to be that warm out there. one of my favorite things to do, let's see what anthony likes to do. >> i like to kayak but got the twins, it's hard, they're only. you know what i mean. all right. let's talk about this traffic. yes, of course, this is what we've been showing you all morning. the dense fog in dublin conditions to remain a problem until 10:00 this morning. the good news we haven't had any accidents through the route. i want to show you on the maps there's the yellow denoted across the map, the fog. the sensors show lots of greens and yellows. traffic is moving without a problem. we have one small accident 880 southbound at the 92 connector. we'll show you the san mateo
6:21 am
bridge, you'll notice the volume is heavy but traffic is moving so that's the good news, it's not actually stop and go even though we still have the small accident. let's switch back over to the maps, the south bay, lots of green on the map for every single highway no, accidents at all across the south bay this morning, so that's some great news and on 101 the slow spot moving past san jose up through sunnyvale and into palo alto does show we are looking at some clearing, not a whole bunch of traffic here on the northbound side but traffic is starting to build on the southbound side and yes, those metering lights are on at the bay bridge. laura? sam? >> anthony, thank you very much. coming up next, at 6:21, the measles outbreak at disneyland may actually be expanding. we'll have new details next. back at home a live look outside at downtown san jose, as you get prepped up and ready for your weekend. first you have to get to work, another day and a half or two days to go. the latest on your weather and traffic fronts coming up after the break.

the first new owe piecity device to be approved by the fdna, more than seven years. in clinical trials patients who used it lost 8.5% more weight than a control group. don't look for it in stores, however. it's likely only going to be offered at specialized clinics with trained surgeons. >> it is 6:26 right now. it has been a rough go of it for the markets this week, trying to break a four-day losing streak. we'll be live with the opening bell coming up next. also what we're learning about the man believed to be behind a terror plot at the u.s. capital. a live look outside this morning from san bruno, the city of san francisco out there amongst others, and it is of course the early morning hours on your thursday. looks okay right now. christina mentioning it's going to be warming up in many parts of the bay area and could be a
6:27 am
beach day if you're so ambitious. we'll have much more coming up on your news and weather right after this break. mmm ring ring! ring ring! progresso! wow soup people, i can't believe i'm eating bacon and rich creamy cheese before my sister's wedding. well it's only 100 calories, so you'll be ready for that dress. uh-huh...that's what i'm afraid of.

the u.s. capital the target of a terror plot. details of the undercover operation that led to an ohio man's arrest. and we're going to see some pretty big changes in the weather department over the course of the next 72 hours. fog and sun for today. as we head throughout friday light showers on the way and the big news, we're close to your weekend and we are going to see temperatures in the 70s in some cities. lot of sunshine headed our way. more on that in just moments. >> looking forward to that. i'm anthony slaughter in for mike inouye tracking the morning commute. dense fog across the trivalley and along with that5w a few accidents starting to snap up. the markets trying to snap a four-day losing streak.
6:30 am
yesterday was madness, the dow industrials lost 350 points in the middle of the day. there you see the opening bell on the nyse. [ bell ringing ] as we move to the nas tadaq ande countdown to business starts right now. >> sometimes you're up, sometimes you're down. scott, now we're going to go way up into the mountains, the san bruno mountain as we take a live look at the bay area at 6:30 on this thursday, january the 15th. you're watching "today in the bay." a very good thursday morning. thank you for joining us. i'm sam brock. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. someone was planning an attack on u.s. soil similar to the deadly attack on canada's parliament building last fall. tracie potts is live on capitol hill with more. >> good morning, laura. 20-year-old christopher lee cornell was planning that attack but didn't get anywhere close to
6:31 am
putting pipe bombs around the u.s. capitol building. his plan authorities say was to shoot people as they were running out but now, he is behind bars. they caught him, the fbi says, communicating on twitter about post isis or ices type messages, sympathizing with isis and the person he was communicating with turned out to be an fbi informant. and so now they believe they have foiled that plot. also, the secret service is taking a closer look inside after another security concern, the fence jumper from last fall, and a number of other issues they've been dealing with. now they have announced that four top officials at the secret service, four top managers there are losing those posts because, as the new acting director, joe clancy says they need a shakeup, to change things in order to change the culture within the agency. >> change coming there, thank you for the update, tracie. new photos are surfacing

from last week's siege of a paris kosher grocery store that left four hostages and the killer dead. gunman amedy cool balance i-is seen wearing a backpack and camo and facing an older man standing across the door. another a partial view of a person on the floor and goods strewn aboard. coulibaly was killed by police when they stormed the shop. officials said at least one of his accomplices may have escaped. french police initially said the driver intentionally ran into the officer but now they say it was just an accident. investigators say apparently two young kids drove the wrong way down a street, panicked and then hit the officer. both were arrested but the officer that was hurt is expected to be okay. 6:32 right now. live look outside and see how things are looking and yes, it is clear-ish in san jose. not the case throughout the entire bay area right now as we
6:33 am
are in yet another spare the air day. >> that's right. we've had several so far in this january alone. let's check the forecast right now and christina. >> i don't think this is going to be one of those long running spare the air trends, laura, sam, everybody at home, good morning to you. we're close to the weekend. i think we're actually going to see better air quality as of tomorrow, a few showers on the way and light snowfall on the way to tahoe, which you might be think being heading out there as we get into this weekend. let's talk about the conditions at squaw valley and alpine meadows. we're still reaping the benefits of an active december and you still have 38 inches so just over three feet at the base. and they're still making that snow, it's cold enough. 35 degrees is the low for this morning, 31 degrees friday, so they're going to keep making that fluffy powder as we head throughout the next 48 hours. you want to head up there, make sure you have the sunscreen ready to go. it will be a lot of sunshine as we head throughout saturday and
6:34 am
sunday. like i said, maybe one to two inches of new snow as we head throughout your friday. showers on the bay area as well, not today. 36 degrees in the north bay, starting out at 46 in san francisco, and 47 degrees on the east shore. let me flip this over for you, show you where we're headed, up to 66 degrees later today in the south bay. you'll hit 64 on the peninsula and 65 degrees on the east shore, a lovely day coming your way, clearing by 10:00 a.m. when it comes to the fog. it's pretty thick in the trivalley but that's really the only spot where we're seeing the thick fog, until you head into the central valley and we have that really thick tulle fog out there this morning. light showers develop tomorrow. i don't think we're going to see as much fog because there's wind with the storm system as well. just as fast as it moves in, it clears out and we are talking about warm winter temps, 15 to 20 degrees above average. so do keep in mind as you head out there today some fog to start, sunny finish. let's find out how the fog could be impacting your drive, here is our own anthony slaughter. >> good morning to you. as you were telling us about the fog all morning long it is starting to reduce visibility
6:35 am
especially across the trivalley, where we've seen the worst visibility. i want to start you off with this emeryville shot that shows the east shore freeway. traffic is stop and go and this is all the way back to the 4 connector so this is another spot that's really starting to stack up. no accidents through that area but again it is just a typical slow spot. let's show you what's happening in oakland farther south on our other camera. traffic is moving without a problem approaching the bay bridge. headed south toward high ward and fremont no issue there is. we have one accident on the traffic map, you can see it's in hayward at the 92 connector so as you try to get over toward the toll plaza on the san mateo bridge there could be some slowing, otherwise not that bad as we head down into the south bay you'll notice a stall actually in sunnyvale at the 85 connector and 101. let's show you what's happening in dublin, this is what we've been talking about all morning long the fog through the trivalley. if this is a typical spot you,
6:36 am
just take it easy. the yellow denotes widespread fog. past dublin things improve but the thing that's remarkable this morning usually through the altamont pass you see major s w slowing and we don't see that. >> good thing, maybe they're slowing down. display cause but no result which i'm sure drivers are grateful for. 6:36, the markets have been crushed this week, open for a few minutes now. >> we need a turnaround. let's check the numbers now scott. >> they were down more than 350 points at one point yesterday, guys. the dow recovered a bit. we're looking to break a four-day losing streak as we take a live look at the big board this morning or perhaps we don't. well let's talk about the euro anyway. the euro is losing strength as well. we're now down to $1.15 will buy you a euro, causing all kinds of trouble in europe which is also dealing with lower prices, deflation essentially. you think deflation is a good
6:37 am
thing, prices get lower but it's not. it's devastating to an economy because people stop buying things because they figure what the heck, it's going to be cheaper tomorrow, why buy today? if everybody does that, your economy collapses. >> less job creation, so it's kind of bad effect there across the board. >> it becomes a vicious circle. >> the numbers are up ever so slightly, dow up about ten points, nasdaq up about five. thanks, scott. 6:37 right now. still ahead, five suspected members of al qaeda set free from guantanamo bay. the reason behind their release, though, is coming up next. >> and we bring you live pictures overlooking san jose this morning, the scene of a massive warehouse fire near downtown. we're getting reports the fire has reignited. this is off of terrain which is very close to julian and 87. we'll of course bring you more details as soon as we get them next.
6:40 am
five suspected al qaeda fighters who have been captured in pakistan more than a dozen years ago were released from guantanamo bay today. the u.s. government says the five men returned to yemen. the men had been cleared for release since 2009 but the government did not want them to go back to yemen, basically it stalled. the men are all in their 30s and 40s, including one who was 17 when he was sent to gitmo. congress eased restrictions on releases in 2013 despite arguments from critics that guantanamo bay holds key terrorism suspects. immigrants can now get birth certificates from mexico in the u.s.
6:41 am
it will make it easier to a ploo for driver's licenses and deportation protection. until now mexico had required citizens to get birth certificates in mexico. many of those living in the u.s. have had to ask family members to pick them up in mexico, which can delay their applications. about half of the 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the u.s. are from mexico. mexico is also trying to help them apply for programs that would allow them to temporarily leave the country and then continue sending money back to relatives across the country. >> this was a big morning, you know why, nominations. >> a lot of news going on i was going to tell you but that's right, oscar nominations this morning. we'll tell you who is up for hollywood's top honor. plus a car slamming through the front of a bay area macy's, sending shoppers scrambling for safety. after three gruelling weeks two climbers reached the top of
6:42 am
6:44 am
we have breaking news to bring to you right now. firefighters are on scene of a fire at the exact same san jose warehouse that burned this time yesterday. this is happening right by highway 87, not far from san pedro square. yesterday's fire was at the same location. investigators say they think homeless squatters may have started that blaze. witnesses saw people running from the scene, and the fence to the warehouse had been forced open. nobody was hurt. fast forward to today, a crew is
6:45 am
headed to the scene right now of this morning's fire. we'll bring you an update as soon as it comes into our newsroom. six people are recovering after a car slammed through a crowded macy's, sending shoppers running for their lives. >> scary situation. stephanie chuang joins us from the new park mall in newark. all that said, this could have been much worse than it was, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you both sam and laura. we're talking about something that happened around 5:00 last night. had there been more people standing on the sidewalk outside the doors that are boarded of we'd have more injuries. man suffered critical injuries, the only one to suffer injuries to that extent. the 63-year-old woman the driver was going fast enough to plow through the front entrance. the blue car barreled into the store, about 50 feet before come
6:46 am
to a stop, crashing into displays, racks and mannequins. all preliminary signs point to the driver going through a medical episode in the parking lot before she hit the building. there are no skid marks until inside so no effort to break before inside the building. all six people went, in all, six people went to the hospital. >> at 5:00 there was a lot of people in the store. we could have been dealing with a lot more injured people. >> in addition to the 63-year-old driver the critically injured man who shoppers were injured and two passengers in a blue car also going to the hospital. paramedics also examined two other people who witnessed the crash and said they suffered panic attacks. so far newark police itnot suspect the driver was under the influence. it appears she hit the gas and then the brakes. unclear why and what exactly happened. all of that still under investigation. live this morning in newark, stephanie chuang, "today in the
6:47 am
