"early today" starts right now. good morning. i'm milissa rehberger. here we go again. frozen roads, round two. in the northeast, there were thousands of accidents yesterday. six people are dead. and this morning the remaining moisture could refreeze, making another dangerous day. nbc's chris pollone reports. >> reporter: from yonkers, new

york, to montgomery county, pennsylvania, thousands of drivers across the northeast were caught off guard early sunday by slick, ice-covered roads. rising temperatures and rain, not snow, falling from the sky gave drivers a false sense of safety. the rain quickly froze making interstates and back roads making for better skating than driving. >> i hit the car. the car comes behind me and hits me. i'm spinning around four or five times. other cars are hitting that car and hitting me as well. >> reporter: the ice caused officials in philadelphia to shut down the city's bridges and also caused a 50-car pileup on pennsylvania's interstate 76. police in new jersey responded to more than 400 accidents alone. but officials in pennsylvania, new jersey, new york, massachusetts and new hampshire scrambled to get roads salted and sanded, but for some it was too late. >> the salt truck was behind us. we all, like, passed the salt truck. so we, like, passed the salt truck, we all get in an accident. >> reporter: chris pollone, nbc news, boston.

authorities are trying to find the person responsible for gunshots fired near vice president joe biden's home in delaware over the weekend. it happened on saturday night. secret service agents heard the shots. one agent saw a vehicle speeding away from the scene. the vice president and his wife were not home at the time. nbc's tracie potts is live in washington. tracie what's the latest? >> what we know is no one was hurt. what we don't know and what the secret service doesn't know is who may have been behind this. this morning the secret service is trying to figure out who drove by vice president joe biden home saturday night and fired multiple gunshots. the secret service heard it so did a neighbor. one agent saw a car speeding by. soon after, county police report more shots fired in the area. >> they're going to be questioning people, trying to bring it all together, maybe checking some cameras in the last retail place they passed and see if they can find out who the car, who was shooting, what's it about. >> reporter: half an hour after the shooting, a man drove by.

he was questioned and detained after resisting arrest. he is not charged in the shooting. last week a delaware national guard base the vice president uses raised security after five cars stopped by in two days to ask for directions. authorities found that suspicious. also last week, the fbi revealed separate plots to bomb the u.s. capitol and poison house speaker john boehner. four months earlier, a knife-wielding fence jumper made it all the way into the white house. the secret service is under scrutiny. >> and the secret service is also in the middle of an internal shake-up. last night they announced that four top managers are being replaced. mills. >> -- milissa. tracie thank you. tomorrow's state of the union address, the white house released this picture of the president hard at work ahead of the big night. he'll be in front of a republican-led congress. according to nbc news "wall street journal" poll 45% of

americans say he's been too stubborn in his dealings with congressional republicans but 55% of those surveyed said it's the gop that is too stubborn. we'll have complete coverage of the president's state of the union address tomorrow night on nbc. today the nation celebrates dr. martin luther king's birthday. president obama and first lady will participate in commune project known as mlk day of service. yesterday the filmmaker and cast of the oscar nominated movie "selma" marched olt bridge in alabama just like dr. king did 50 years ago. oprah winfrey reflected on what the experience meant to her. >> i'm so excited that once again, i get to march across the bridge not as portraying annie lee cooper but as standing in the shoes and on the shoulders of everyone who came before us. >> in an effort to continue the discussion on racial issues in america, mtv will broadcast 12

hours of its programming in black and white. today's google doodle, dr. king locked in arms with other civil rights leaders. and "the new yorker" cover features an illustration of mlk marching with trayvon martin, michael brown and other people's deaths who have furthered the discussion on race relations. later in the show, richard lui will have a report on dr. king's legacy. the super bowl is set now that the top two teams emerged in sunday's conference championships. the patriots weren't the only obstacle the colts had to face in new england. damp conditions at gillette stadium. the pats released this time lapse video of the field crew removing the rain tarp before the game. though the pats seemed unaffected by the weather, tom brady threw for three touchdowns, and legarrette blount ran in three more in a crushing 45-7 victory over the colts. it was the second most lopsided afc championship win since buffalo's 51-3 romp against

overtime. quarterback russell wilson was brought to tears afterwards. the seahawks are the first team to reach back-to-back super bowls since the '04/'05 patriots. there you have it. on february 1st the seahawks will face the patriots in glendale, arizona, for super bowl xlix. kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. eastern right here on nbc. let's get the forecast for that game. as we mentioned earlier, it could be a dangerous and messy commute. nbc bill karins has more on that. good morning. >> good morning. >> i still don't think seahawks fans, they have probably seen the highlights 20 times. they probably still don't believe they came back to win. really amazing stuff. those pictures of the ice yesterday, it happened at my house. what made it so dangerous was that it was crystal clear, wasn't on the trees, power lines, wasn't on the vehicles. the ground was below freezing. it was just that thin crystal clear coating. a lot of people didn't know it until they stepped on it.

in that region right above freezing in most spots. some sidewalks are icy from yesterday. it was an incredible scene. i've seen freezing rainstorms that weren't as treacherous. as far as the northwest goes we still have moisture streaming off the pacific, snow levels pretty high but a little bit above passes this morning. as far as the west goes it doesn't look like as many weather headlines this week. if anything we're probably as cool as we're going to get. it looks like on this very stubborn called this ridge, call it a heat ridge if you want over the drought area continues to build this week and looks to stay with us the next week or two. no signs of big rain or big snow. thank goodness we had that rain in december. if not, we'd be in dire straits right now. as far as rain today, showers in the northwest. here is the next seven days. that's it.

mischief. it's not known what phillips will face since she is a minor. >> i'm just really glad to be back and providing weather for viewers at home. >> nevada's 35-year-old kcen patrick crawford returned to work this morning after being shot in the stomach and shoulder in a parking lot outside wacko, texas, television station on december 17th. crawford says he's lucky to be alive. police are still searching for the shooter. it is a selfie controversy ahead of this year's miss universe pageant. that is miss israel on the left, miss lebanon on the right next to her, then miss slovenia, then miss japan. it seemed innocent enough, right? miss israel posted it to her instagram account. that's when a lebanese tv station criticized miss lebanon for being in a selfie with miss israel since the two countries are enemies. so miss lebanon responded on her facebook page saying she had been trying to avoid miss israel
