a mystery in and around san francisco bay. something in the water is injuring dozens of birds and leaving oerds dead >> it is the end of the line for an historic chapter in civil rights history. why this martin luther king jr. day will be especially poignant in the bay area. a scare in the air causes a hawaii-bound flight from oakland to land quickly in san jose. looking live outside at san jose this morning, a nice mild start to the day, maybe you can leave without a sweater. do i dare say? it is january 19th. this is "today in the bay."

a very good monday morning. it's 4:30. i'm sam brock. >> i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia-cannon. first we want the forecast because maybe you have the day off. here's anthony slaughter. good morning. >> good morning, in for christina loren this morning. we're tracking some thick fog across the peninsula right now, coming through apea alto, toward san carlo, even sfo seeing delays. santa rosa thick's cross petaluma and napa. our sky camera tells the story. you can make out the city down below and san jose but not the same story in palo alto so the thick fog inundating the area in certain spots. this afternoon a mix of sun and clouds like what we saw this past weekend, temperatures back into the mid-60s for most of us. we have a huge warmup, widespread 70s and even some cities pushing 80 as we head towards this week. we'll break that down coming up for you guys later. back to you. >> 4:31 right now. wildlife experts plan to go

back out to the shores of the east bay this morning looking for birds with feathers coated by a mysterious substance. yesterday teams went out in san lorenzo and the hayward area to rescue threatened birds. more than 150 of the animals have been rescued so far and unfortunate 20 have died. the substance is described as thick and sticky. >> it is a lot of birds. there was some type of release in the bay of this unknown product. we know it's not petroleum oeil. we're fairly certain it's not vegetable or fish oil. it shows up kind of like rubber cement. >> the state wildlife agencies will be testing the substance and the results could be complete this week. happening today across the country, hundreds of thousands of americans will commemorate what would have been dr. martin luther king jr.'s 86th birthday. they will celebrate with church

services and tributes and several events are planned across the bay area here to honor dr. king, including community service events and parades and rallies. yesterday demonstrators took to the streets of oakland protesting police violence. this is video captured by the nbc chopper that shows demonstrators are blocking roadway there is. oakland police say the protest this is weekend were mostly peaceful. four people were arrested on various charges including assaulting a police officer. 17 other people were ticketed for other lesser crimes. oakland and berkeley police say they expect more demonstrations today. in new york, the reverend al sharpton is holding be like king events to promote and honor the work of dr. king. sharp and his national action network will hold a wreath-laying ceremony for wenjin liu and rafael ramos, the two policemen gunned down in their car last month and he'll

hold a vigil for eric garner, who died after being put in a chokehold. secretary of homeland security jeh johnson will participate in a wreath-laying ceremony at the mlk memorial and president obama and first lady michelle obama will be taking part in a community service project in the d.c. area, also in celebration of mlk day. the presidential proclamation encourages americans to observe the day with appropriate civic, community and service projects in honor of the late dr. king. today for the final time the nation's last remaining freedom train ride issing if to go from san jose to san francisco. that train leaves the diridon station in less than five hours and already sold out. for more than 30 years the train has taken people to san francisco for the civil rights march. king's wife, creaoretta scott k

first had the idea to run trains across the country. this is the last one. >> we've been barely running the train for the last five or six years and there's just no interest anymore. >> now organizers say ridership in recent years has certainly dwindled to about half of what's needed for the train to keep running. the san jose to san francisco vut roughly the same distance at selma to montgomery, alabama, that is why coretta scott king first chose it. oprah winfrey and actors from "selma" march to mark the birthday of martin luther king jr. the group walked to where the famous march began in 1965. >> i'm so excited that once again i get to march across the bridge not as portraying annie lou cooper but as standing in the shoes and on the shoulders of every one who came before us. >> oprah stars in the oscar

nominated film "selma" and the movie follows king's crusade for equal voting rights and marks a turning point in american history. tlrnlgs there is a big push for students to see "selma" this martin luther king jr. day. group wants all seventh, eighth and ninth graders to see that movie for free at participating theaters. taught about the civil rights movement but few actually know about the specific historic march from selma to montgomery, alabama. if you'd like to find out which are taking part, go to nbcbayarea.com, just search "selma." a hawaiian vacation got off to a rocky start, this after a scare in the air ended up with an emergency landing in san jose international airport. this hawaiian airlines flight had just taken off from oakland en route to honolulu. the pilot is rerouted to san jose airport after a crack developed mid flight in the windshield. plane spotter got this video

here. you can see the plane lands safely and emergency crews arrive. passengers were able to get on other flights. no word yet on what caused that crack to form. cats may have nine lives but this family dog has two. he sur vuvived a house fire by hiding under a bed. the fire started in his home. family members came home to find the house on fire, but their dog was missing. firefighters used a heat sensing camera to find that little dog hiding under a bed. luckily he was not hurt. the house did have major damage and investigators say that the fire was likely sparked by an electrical outlet. >> get low, the dog knew what to do. when it comes to the spread of california's measles outbreak, researchers say location may ultimately play a major factor. they've identified about a dozen hotbeds across northern california they say are underimmunized. parents are either skipping their children's measles vaccinations or delaying it.

doctors say most of the people stricken with measles have not been immunized. more than 50 measles cases have been reported in four different states in and mexico from an outbreak that may have started in disneyland. on this martin luther king day the latest search of king tides could turn some bay area roads into ponds. king tides happen twice a year when the earth, moon and the sun are aligned in a way that causes a strong gravitational pull. king tides also generate high surf. the latest round will stick through wednesday and return for the final time this season at the end of february. >> is propoe the king tides on this martin luther king holiday. the golden gate bridge as anthony has been talking about a warmup throughout the week. if you step outside feels pretty good to begin with. good morning. >> not too bad. the fact that we have the fog and low cloud cover acting as a blanket overhead. the king tide starts today and will continue through wednesday. the high tide between 9:00 this

morning and 10:15. keep that in mind traffic if ve the low-lying area. fog in the peninsula and north bay. everyone just cloud cover. and because of that 50s across the board right now and that's where we're going to bottom out at. 65 for the south bay later on this afternoon. the east shore at 65 and san francisco at 63. the north bay after you get rid of that fog will be at 67. we have a frontal boundary overhead right now, a weak system that's kind of fizzling out but because of that, that's why we have the fog and even some drizzle and mist out there, even across the south bay this morning, so as that frontal boundary continues to weaken and fall apart it will continue to bring in cool ocean air so we're not overly warm today but because of that system overhead mixing out our atmosphere, we don't have to spare the air today. we've been under spare the air alerts really for the past couple of weeks, 20 winter spare the air days to be exact. finally done with that and as we start the day tomorrow we'll

wake up to morning fog but really the trend will be the morning fog and afternoon sunshine and then the big warmup as we head towards the latter part of this upcoming week. notice by friday in san jose, 71, even in livermore expecting to top out at 70. unfortunately at the coastline, san francisco you'll continue to see the showery activity at least for the first half of the day, more of that drizzle mist like what we're seeing in the sn. even by friday in san francisco, close to 70, mid-60s but hey, it's january. we'll take that, right? >> i think we are the envy of the nation as we like to talk. thank you very much, anthony. the secret service is trying to unravel a mystery, multiple shots fired at the home of vice president joe biden. the suspicious activity nearby that first put federal agents on alert. ,000 started with simple carowsing. what happened when a golfer took a turn at night.

welcome back. 4:44, developing story right now as protests continue around the world over the latest issue of the french satirical magazine "charlie hebdo" after the magazine, which was attacked two weeks ago, printed another cartoon of the prophet muhammad. riders in niger bld buildings and churches. ten people were killed in the capital city. in pakistan, organizers or

protesters marched toward the french consulate demanding punishment for those who published the cartoon and in russia tens of thousands of people are marching in the streets in protest of that magazine. vice president joe biden is speaking today at a martin luther king day breakfast this morning. >> this comes as the secret service investigates shots fired near his delaware home over the weekend. "today in the bay's" tracie potts has the latest from c capitol hill. >> reporter: this morning, the secret service is trying to figure out who drove by vice president biden's home saturday night and fired multiple gunshots. the secret service heard it, so did a neighbor. one agent saw a car speeding by. soon after, county police report more shots fired in the area. >> they're going to be questioning people, trying to bring it together, checking some cameras in the last retail place they passed and see if they can find out who is the car, who was shooting and what it's about. >> reporter: a man drove by, he was questioned and detained

after resisting arrest. he is not charged in the shooting. last week a delaware national guard base the vice president uses raised security after five cars stopped by in two days to ask for directions. authorities found that suspicious. also last week, the fbi revealed separate plots to bomb the u.s. capitol and poison house speaker john boehner. four months earlier a knife-wielding fence jumper made it all the way into the white house. the secret service is under scrutiny. and this is all happening amid an internal shakeup at the secret service just last week. they announced four top managers are being replaced. tracie potts, nbc news, washington. >> thank you very much. president obama hasn't even delivered his state of the union address yet, it's already drawing criticism from republicans. president obama spent his weekend working on the speech. now it's going to be first delivered to a capitol controlled by the gop, a newly controlled congressional caucus there. we do know the president has a huge wish list, which includes a

tax increase for the rich and more spending on the middle class and the poor. republican lawmakers are already lining up against this plan. >> and i'll call on this new congress to join me in putting aside the political games and finding areas where we agree so we can deliver for the american people. >> raising taxes on people that are successful is not going to make people that are struggling more successful. >> and that plan looks to be dead on arrival. now last year, more than 1 million people watched the state of the union on mobile devices. the white house expects to top that record tomorrow. we'll have to see. we'll also have live coverage of the president's state of the union address tomorrow. it begins at 6:00 right here on nbc bay area. authorities in southern california are investigating the death of a popular fitness model known for his television and magazine work. perhaps you'll recognize 37-year-old greg plitt. he was struck and killed by a train saturday while filming a video with two other men. it happened on train tracks near burbank.

he was on numerous magazine covers and appeared on the bravo reality show "workout." some witnesses told investigators he failed to move even as the train horns blaired. others believe they saw him stumble. burbank police have ruled out suicide. a bizarre story out of hawaii where robert allenby is recovering from being beaten, kidnapped and robbed. this started inside of a wine bar. the golf channel is reporting that surveillance video shows him leaving with a group of people from that bar. allenby says he doesn't remember much after that but believes he was drugged. he was later found in a park with his face swollen and robbed of his wallet and cell phone. allenby was in hawaii for the sony open where he ended up missing the cut. he's going to speak about his ordeal on the "today" show coming up later this morning. happening now, icy roads are being blamed for crashes that left at east five people dead yesterday in the northeast. by far the biggest crash involved some 50 cars on interstate 76 which is outside

philadelphia. one person died in that pile-up. two others died in a separate crash on a nearby interstate. meanwhile an incredible story on the west coast, where icy roads were also a problem. look at the pictures from oregon from saturday. man survived that accident, he was sandwiched by two big rigs and that mangled mess, caleb whitby was trapped in, was once a chevy silverado >> i was protected, somebody was watching out for me, i closed my eyes and held onto the wheel. it happened to be everything in the entire pickup was smashed to the bare rim. >> not only did whitby survive that crash. all he suffered were a couple of minor cuts. >> count your lucky stars on that one. >> that doesn't usually end that way. >> no. 4:48 right now. we're going to check in with anthony slaughter in for christina this morning. we're blanketed by, let me guess, a little bit of patchy

fog. >> that's right. patchy fog across most of the peninsula and north bay, just the typical low cloud cover. later this morning around 11:00 there will be the martin luther ÷ parade in san francisco, it starts at fourth and king, working its way up toward yerba buena gardens. suband clouds by 11:00. by 6:00, 60 degrees in san francisco, so if you get out there and participate it is the 50th anniversary of the civil rights movement so really a good time to get out and celebrate our civil rights movement. now let's talk about our weather map. we have a system right overhead, a frontal boundary that's washing out not really producing any rainfall but it is really reinforcing that onshore push and that's why we have the fog out there and of course a little bit of drizzle and mist from time to time. we have better air quality as a result of the system moving overhead. notice across the east bay even good air quality, we haven't been able to say that in over two weeks. today's highs are comfortable,

back into the mid-60s. 65 for the south bay, same for the peninsula. east shore at 65. san francisco a tad bit cooler, 63 in the north bay, 67 for your daytime high today. while we're not overly warm we'll see a warming trend kick in this week. we'll talk more about how warm the temperature also go coming up in a little bit. guys back over to you. >> how high can you go. 4:50 and facebook is on a hiring spree of sorts. the social media giant looking for 1, 00 new employees, some jobs revolve around virtual reality. other open positions include spots in facebook's drone division and data center. >> as long as they pay with real money. >> maybe the only thing worse than paying taxes is paying a tax you didn't have to pay. that's apparently what is happening to millions of americans because of the health care coverage law. the affordable care act requires

americans to pay tax penalties if they don't have health insurance. the company intuit estimates more than 120 million who might have qualified for the exemption never actually applied for it. the tax penalty averages about 300 bucks. it can be easily wiped away though for anyone who qualifies. you just have to go backer it. >> hopefully retroactively. an old school silicon valley company is offering a new school perk. intel is offering eight weeks of paid leave for new parents. the new program is for mothers and fathers and comes in addition to 13 weeks of paid leave it already offers new moms. than adds up to 21 weeks total. the news comes after the santa clara-based company announced last week that it will spend $300 million to improve diversity in its workforce. nearly three-quarters of intel's workers are male and two of its top 15 executives are women. >> that's nice. i think that breeds some sort of
