tradition coming to an end. the last freedom train in the nation will make its final trip in the bay area this morning. >> starting off this work week with lots of fog especially across the south bay and the peninsula. little bit of drizzle out there as well and better air quality is on the way later on this afternoon with the return of 70s by friday. i'm meteorologist anthony slaughter in for christina loren, with the full forecast ahead. and looking live at the story of the morning, a little bit of fog there at the golden gate bridge but it seems to be pouring on down to the south bay. we're seeing it build, we'll talk more about that forecast on this monday, january 19th. this is "today in the bay." we do have some breaking news to report to you this morning. san francisco store will be doing some major cleanup right now after a u-haul slammed right through the front of the store. people got out, grabbed the goods. you the it on the truck and then
6:01 am
sped off. >> "today in the bay's" stephanie chuang is near the front of the store. police are calling this a smash and grab event. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, kris and sam. big kind of smash and grab using as you mentioned a u-haul van. we're here at hyde and north point, the pategonia store, the front is completely smashed in and one of the racks targeted in front, several of the racks, these jackets which don't look like much but looking online they're $140 to 200 bucks apiece. two men were involved in this, hopped into a u-haul van and took off, happened within a minute. we spoke with the sergeant who said that there was no police chase, although police officers did spot the getaway van. >> units in the district, after we had given the description of the u-haul spotted it. they were they were able to
6:02 am
catch up to the u-haul. >> reporter: and what is the policy when there's a crime like that? >> usually the pursuit is canceled because it's a property crime. >> reporter: back here live there is at least one security camera there and police are trying to determine if they can get any video. of course that would be extremely helpful in this situation. sergeant wong also saying it looks like someone was probably sent in to case the story beforehand, so that the people involved knew exactly where to go here, again they targeted the front here and also the front over there, really didn't go into the back, cash rentalsters are still in place and that is the very latest live in san francisco, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> we'll see if the police get a visual on the perpetrators there. thank you very much, stephanie. 6:02 right now. two san jose teenagers are under arrest after leading police on a chase that ended with a crash in morgan hill. it all started just before 9:00 last night when a chp officer saw a car swerving on highway
6:03 am
101 and figured out it had been reported stolen. the officer tried to pull the car over but instead the driver kept going and took the east dun avenue exit. officers say the car struck a median, flipping over onto its roof. you see the pictures here. they were tweeted out by the chp. the driver and the passenger ran away but later found and arrested. the boys are 14 years old and they think those teens had been drinking. happening across the country today, hundreds of thousands of americans will pay tribute to the civil rights leader dr. martin luther king jr. >> reverend al sharpton is holding be like king events to honor and promote the work of dr. king. >> and the ninth annual mlk peace walk. >> president obama and first lady michelle obama will both be participating in a community service project in the d.c. area
6:04 am
lsz in celebration of his 86th birthday. >> rob rededd joins us this morning. the final train leaves in less than four hours. there's been declining interest. what is the case this year? >> reporter: thufrl is the last ride at least that's what the dr. martin luther king jr. association is telling us. good morning to you, sam and kris there. for several years people who organized this freedom train from san jose to san francisco have been saying it's on the verge of shutting down because of declining ticket sales. 1600 people rode this train just after president barack obama was elected. so he was elected obviously in '08. the train was in '09. this year the association has only been able to sell 700 tickets, which is a sold out amount but only half of what is needed to keep this event funded. this particular freedom train is
6:05 am
significant because it's the last one still running nationwide. one of more than two dozen started by dr. king's wife 30 years ago. coretta scott king chose the san jose to sf route because it's 54 miles long, roughly the same distance her husband marched from selma to montgomery 50 years ago which inspired countless bay area freedom train riders throughout the years. >> we've been barely running the train for the last five or six years and there's just no interest anymore. >> reporter: unfortunately the interest has waned too much. as i mentioned, tickets are sold out for this morning's train which departs at 9:45. reporting live here in san jose, bob redell, "nbc bay area news." >> back here to the bay area the last train in the country, thank you so much. >> stay with us throughout the day as people around the country honor the life and work of dr. king. we're not on the air, head to

6:08 am
unfortunately it's not producing any rain, and for us, that's really what we need unfortunately not going to get that today or on that extended forecast either. what you'll notice the visibility is starting to fall off. across the north bay not that bad. nine miles in santa rosa over towards napa four miles, fairfield dropping down to three miles. last week it was really concentrated across the east bay and the north bay, and this week more so across the south bay because you can notice some san jose visibility down to one mile, even san carlos and mountain view down to 1.5 miles and near half moon bay looks like visibility has fallen down to just a few hundred feet so yes, it is very thick across the peninsula and coastline this morning but elsewhere not all that bad. you can see in palo alto you can make out the cars down below, same for theality month pass through dublin, not that bad, even in san francisco we are seeing improved visibilities. later on this afternoon, temperatures comfortable, 63 in san francisco, 67 for the north
