"early today" starts right now. good morning. i'm milissa rehberger. tonight president obama will deliver his state of the union address. he's already unveiled several major talking points which include more spending on the middle class and the poor along

with a tax increase for the rich. nbc's tracie potts live in washington this morning. a tracie, what can we expect to hear from the president tonight? >> reporter: a lot of what he's going around the country already talking about, brand-new momentum. our poll unveiled overnight, 46% approval rating. that's the highest this president has had in over a year. as for americans who think the country is on the right track, satisfied with the state of the economy now, that number is the highest in more than a decade. >> our job now is to make sure every american feels they are part of our country's comeback. >> reporter: tonight in the first lady's box a cross-section of those americans president obama is targeting. astrid had surgery thanks to obama care. >> i remember laying there and thinking wow, i'm just really grateful and blessed that i had insurance. >> carolyn reed a government

loan helped her expand the family business. >> we had three stores and now we have seven stores. we have over 100 employees. things have worked out very well for us. >> reporter: tonight president obama will urge congress to cut taxes for the middle class and get rid of tax breaks that allow the wealthy to shield millions by giving money to their kids. >> even republicans acknowledge that loophole should be closed. >> reporter: likely won't go far in this congress. >> i think it's dead on arrival in this congress. it won't work. it will cost us jobs. >> reporter: jobs and personal wealth still a big concern. our new nbc "wall street journal" poll finds americans are more optimistic about the economy but just over one in four say their own financial situation is getting better. >> it's about the same for people thinking it's getting worse. almost a quarter of people say they are stagnant their financial situation has remained

about the same. >> all right, teas. thank you. we'll have live coverage of the state of the union with our entire team from washington at 9:00 eastern, 6:00 pacific time on nbc. cue nfl where fans are calling it a deflate game. after 45-7 rout in the afc championship game the big question this morning is did the new england patriots have help. were they cheating? the nfl is looking into whether they used deflated balls which make it easier to grip and catch, especially in the rain. nbc's sports mike florio said several balls were removed for being underinflated. yesterday tom brady laughed off the accusations. >> did you get the sense that you were able to grip the ball better than the colts last night? would you weigh in on that? >> i think i've heard everything at this point. >> back in 2007 bill belichick

was fined half a million dollars and team $250,000 for videotaping an opponent's signals during a a game. after the investigation, he says they will cooperate fully. breaking overnight a bridge collapsed in cincinnati. it happened over i-75. a semi hit a sagging part of an overpass that was being demolished. the impact sent 100 tons of concrete flying and killed a construction worker. here is how one witness described it. >> i heard a real big boom. i kind of knew right then and there that something fell or something collapsed. >> the driver was hurt but is okay. the roadway is expected to be closed for at least 48 hours. in maryland six families members are missing after a huge mansion fire. the 1600 square foot annapolis home went up in flames on monday. this morning, there is still no sign of any remains. our nbc affiliate wrc in d.c.

said the home is owned by don pile the chief operating officer of science logic, which is based in virginia citing the fire was tougher because water had to be shuttled in and there was no fire hydrant in the area. a nationwide celebration for what would have been dr. martin luther king's 85th birthday. the day has also become a day of service. president obama and first family were at a boys and girls club in washington helping students put together literacy kits. homeland security secretary jeh johnson laid a wreath at the memorial honoring the civil rights icon. and from the nation's capital to boston denver and st. paul, minnesota, thousands marched in the name of dr. king to protest police brutality. the queen of soul a long time friend to mlk shared her thoughts on the significance of mlk day. >> i am delighted and just thrilled to see that people are continuing to come out and pay tribute and pay honor to dr.

king and continuing the ideals of his dream and the i have a dream speech. i think that he would be very pleased, but of course, he would still say we have a lot of work to do. a recent nbc "wall street journal" poll found that a little more than half of the country does believe it's being carried out, a dream where people are not judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. captured on video just seconds from disaster a driver captured a big rig sliding across an icy road. this happened on the new jersey turnpike. the driver in the car somehow stayed calm as the truck whizzed by. a florida woman fainted behind the wheel causing an eye popping crash. the car was going 60. it slipped andflipped and took out

a taco stand. the driver and her friend had minor injuries. >> just driving along and it happened. it was just like day and night. in miami beach, dirt bikes and atvs have taken over. riders have turned streets into raceways. by the way, both are illegal on public streets. nbc meteorologist bill karins is here with your tuesday forecast. >> still can't get over the video of the big rig, the tandem trailer. the person taking video, what if they hit them. i would be bracing myself. i don't know what i would do but i wouldn't be taking a video. oh well they lived to tell about it. yesterday was an amazingly warm day across the country. the map looks like march or maybe april. we had entire southern half of the nation in the 60s and 70s. this is the january thaw. there's very little winter today. yesterday 75 in phoenix. we were gorgeous. new mexico yesterday, albuquerque was 58. if there's one spot in the

country that's going to get winter weather in the days ahead it's northern new mexico. they are actually under winter storm watch. they are going to get heavy snow and wintry mess mixed in with that. that's pure snow. for much of the west we are quiet. we're going to stay quiet. here we are in the middle of the rainy season. it looks at least like another week with dry weather everywhere. hopefully the pattern may break down and change after that. it's status quo for now. temperatures kind of average with pacific air in place. 60 today in san francisco, l.a. a little cooler. more clouds have moved in but not any moisture with it. 68 l.a. 65. there's that change for albuquerque as the colder air moves in and also get to a rain any reporting station on these maps.
