morning. it's 4:30, i'm sam brock. >> and i am laura garcia-cannon. rob is in for christina. >> good morning. little more fog acrossed golden gate bridge a staple of your morning commute. mike will have more in a moment. through the morning we'll have the patchy, dense fog breaking up around lunch time. expecting highs today in the low 60s but approaching the 70s as we head towards the weekend. looking at your forecast coming up in a few minutes. now for a check of your tuesday commute here's mike. >> you're right. i have a little bit more to show folks. this is the bay bridge toll plaza, doesn't look much different than the golden gate bridge rob showed you. the orange glow is the lights because of the fog. look at our maps as we show you the maze approachinghu÷mñ the a the orange blob not usually as much fog on the roadway, at the

roadway level approaching off of 24 and 580. that will be a factor. things are traveling down by the oakland airport. 880 itself looks all right. in the trivalley coming out of the altamont pass, slowing toward livermore. we have new details on a water rescue in the south bay. two boaters got stuck because of a low tide which means a memo fire air boat had to pick the men up about 10:30 last night after a coast guard helicopter spotted them. the boaters used a cell phone to call for help around 6:30 but then the phone fell into the water. rescuers searched for an hour and a half before calling the coast guard to help with the search. this marks the second rescue in those waters in a little more than 24 hours. both boats were caught in the low tide. passengers on two delta flights got a scare on the tarmac in new york last night. authorities say someone called in bomb threats forcing them to evacuate the planes. we have cell phone video from a

passenger on one of the planes, police say they got two anonymous calls saying there was a bomb on board delta flight 468. there were two flights numbered 468. one left sfo landed in new york 8:00 eastern time and the other overseas. >> they said there was a bomb in our plane and we went to a different terminal and got on buses and waited there a while. >> passengers stayed there long enough for police and bomb sniffing dogs to search the plane. police are telling homeowners in atherton to lock up. man was spotted looking into the windows of a home. few minutes later police were dispatched to mesa court after reports of another man lurking on another property. people in the neighborhood are being extra cautious. >> i have to be sure that my

husband knows that he can't leave any doors open and all that. so you have to be more careful. >> never think it could happen in your neighborhood. other residents complained about finding doors unlocked, even finding stolen keys in front door dead bolts. 000 is 4:34. two men tied to the beating death of a popular tennis instructor could enter a plea in court today. investigators say he hit his head on the ground after someone punched him. he died three weeks later. police say four men were involved, one is facing involuntary manslaughter charges for throwing the punch. another is accused of driving the car that nearly hit officers when the group tried to leave the scene. both men are due in court today. the future of candlestick park or more accurately its demise will be the focus of a meeting today in san francisco. the contractor lenar initially

planned to implode the stadymí last week it took out permits to dismatle the stadium piece by piece. people living near candlestick also support demolition for health concerns. today's city leaders will focus on the demolition plan xaexpect to start any day now. dozens are still behind bars after bringing traffic to a halt on san mateo bridge. protesters blocked all westbound traffic for two hours, they cited the martin luther king jr. holiday saying they wanted to bring attention to racial injustice and global inequality. the chp detained 68 people, most either students or members of the stanford community. almost all were released, 11 sent to jail. how many in your family do you know have gotten the flu? bay area continues to ramp up. others are not letting anyone

under the age of 16 go beyond the waiting room. doctors say we should take precautions to prevent spreading the flu, coughing into your arm, keeping your hands clean and getting your flu shot even if it doesn't protect you against all the strengths. there are 52 confirmed cases of measles tied to people who d visited disneyland. measles is highly contagious, experts say this outbreak is being fueled by parents who refused to vaccinate their children. five residential pockets where the vaccine refusal rate rose between 2010 and 2012 including one in almeida county. mexican officials confirmed one measles case in a 22-month-old child and unvaccinated girl who went to disneyland in december.

officials expect the number of cases to rise. a follow-up now today we could learn more information about the mysterious goo killing birds along san francisco bay. for four days they have finding birds coated in some sort of mysterious, sticky substance. so far 50 have died. 250 others are being treated at the center in fairfield. the birds are turning up on the east bay shoreline. this is california's fish and wildlife performs test. the substance is not oil-based. >> there's no smelly residue on your gloves or anything, but it is kind of tacky to the touch so it gets kind of sticky so it sticks to your gloves. >> it's quite the mystery. if authorities find someone is responsible for this, that person or persons could face a fine or even some criminal charges. it's 4:37 right now. ron is in this morning, it's foggy in some parts. >> the golden gate bridge

disappears into the clouds there. not too foggy in san francisco, the skies more overcast there. san jose national too bad at 44 degrees and the fog extremely thick in spots closer to the oakland airport but there near the coliseum, 50 degrees, not too bad. the thickest of the fog this morning near oakland airport into livermore, less than a half mile and dropping below a mile along interstate 80 towards fairfield. the fog should break up a little bit earlier today as a north wind drops in out of the north bay and temperatures climbing into the 60s. we're also watching out for unusually high astronomical high tides. king tide coming up later on this morning, coming up at just before 10:00 we'll see a high tide of about seven feet out there at ocean beach and high temperatures today around the bay area in the low 60s. for the north bay highs low 60s today but 70s showing up as we approach the weekend. mike? >> all right, ron. we want to start off over my

shoulder the bay bridge toll plaza is one issue here, usually heavy through the maze and that will be a factor for the morning. so far light volume here. the dublin camera westbound 580, another one of the pockets rob was talking about, west 580 tough drive as far as visibility at times. on the maps we'll show you the trivalley and the arrow where the camera was in the westbound direction towards 680. the orange that shows you where there's much more roadway fog, vasco 580 and a little slowing typical start for the pattern for your bay area commute. looking at the speed sensors we don't have a major issue around the way but the fog is the reason for the warning across all of your bay area bridges. we'll give you a look at the san mateo bridge on the hayward side. looks typical. the sign on the right glowing is just warning about dense fog in patches and that is westbound with the few tail lights way from it. this is the hayward side, looks like a standard view but if we

look from the peninsula side, foster city toward the high-rise. i zoomed it in. silhouette for one of the towers and the glowing lights and you can see the disappearing lights as they travel to and from the high-rise. visibility along the san mateo, dumb barton, benicia bridge, bay bridge, golden gate bridge, all issues for the chp so watch out. high beams are a problem in the fog. >> you almost had to name all the bridges there. >> everything is glowing. 4:40 right now. another seattle team is about to change the way we actually see baseball. >> actually see baseball. the seattle mariners baseball team replaced all of its stadium lights with l.e.d. lights. the l.e.d. lights imitate natural light and researchers say in other sports arenas, l.e.d. was easier on the eye and produced crisp, true colors for broadcast. the lights will save the organization 60% on its electricity bill as well, not a bad bonus there and the bulbs

welcome back. the time is 4:44, this as we take a live look outside in oakland and you can see that yep, there's a little bit of fog all over the east bay this morning as well. japanese leaders are vowing this morning to save the lives of two hostages being held ransom right now by isis militants. in an online video released this morning, two extremists claiming to be with isis threatened to kill the hostages in orange jumpsuits. we're choosing not to show the video because it is isis propaganda. what they want, $200 million in the next 72 hours. the two hostages have been identified as a military

contractor and a freelance journalist. senior u.s. defense officials say they have no active plans to evacuate the u.s. embassy in yemen, this despite much violence there. intense fighting sprang up near the presidential palace after rebels took control of state-run media. at least three people were killed. u.s. officials say al qaeda in yemen poses the biggest threat to america. the fighting right now pits forces loyal to the president against a group called houthis, wants to eradicate al qaeda in yemen. john sundal was flying near kabal when the taliban shot his helicopter down. he briefly dated britney spears in 2007 after meeting her at an aa meeting. he helped her through her darkest days and helped her stop

drinking. tonight the president grabbing the biggest stage and tv audience of his term. he'll be headed into his penultimate state of the union address riding on a bit of momentum. he has his highest approval ratings in more than a year and more americans are satisfied with the economy than in the past decade. president obama will urge the congress to cut taxes for the middle class and get rid of tax breaks that allow the wealthy to shield money by giving it to their kids. >> i think the president's plan to raise taxes is dead on arrival in this congress. it won't work. it will cost us jobs. >> our job now is to make sure that every american feels that they're a part of our country's comeback. >> okay, the new nbc/"wall street journal" poll finds americans are more optimistic about the economy but having said that, only one in four say their own financial situation is getting better. stay with nbc bay area, we're going to air the state of the union live. our coverage begins at 6:00.

livermore there less than a half mile, too, but the visibility in the south bay not too bad. it took some time yesterday for the low clouds to break up and looks like we could see something similar as we go through the day. for the morning the areas of low clouds probably at their thickest around the north bay and east bay valleys and gradually clearing skies as we get through the afternoon there, mostly clear as we head towards the afternoon and evening. if you're going to be around the coast and bay, watch out for another astronomical high tide, this is coming up just before 10:00 this morning. the king tides about seven foot high tide at ocean beach just before 10:00 this morning, look out for some unusual rip currents and again the potential theror some roadway flooding along the coast and inner bay. temperatures for the afternoon, low 60s, hazy sunshine around the south bay. 63 in san jose, close to 60 in san francisco and we should see highs again in the low 60s around the north bay and trivalley but the story ahead as we go through the end of the week will be temperatures beginning to climb on up. you can see the highs friday and

saturday, san jose in the 70s. if we can manage low to mid-70s which we think will happen here for the south bay this weekend and the north bay, these will be breaking records this weekend at a time of year we could really use the rain, instead highs soaring into the throw mid-70s as we go through saturday and sunday. back to you. >> thanks so much, rob. it's 4:50 right now. a section of busy interstate in ohio will be closed for the next two days after a bridge collapse killing a construction worker. it happened last night as this crew worked to take down an overpass in cincinnati. construction worker was killed by falling pieces of the bridge. about 100 tons of concrete fell. happening today, jury selection begins in the trial of the man accused in a deadly shooting rampage you'll recall in a colorado movie theater. james holmes faces multiple counts of first-degree murder and attempted murder for the 2012 shooting in aurora. holmes pleaded not guilty by

reason of insanity. there are 9,000 prospective jurors, one of the largest pools ever. we're learning new details in the death of a television fitness model. authorities say greg plitt and his film crew were trespassing when he was hit and killed by a train in southern california. plitt was shooting a video for his website at the time. according to friends the reality tv star made a fatal mistake whiler.bb filming. plitt tripped and was killed by an oncoming train. >> very tragic there. 4:51. a new study suggesting we need to keep a closer eye on the older people around us. the study found that the number of falls among elderly adults is on the rise right now, between 1998 and 2010, self-reported falls rose 8%. researchers say that might not sound like a lot but it's much more than what they expected to find. they were also surprised by data

it was certainly record-breaking weekend for the iraq war drama. "american sniper" grossing $90 million. it stars bradley cooper, two 6-year-olds from san jose play a key part in the movie. the film is a true story of a navy s.e.a.l. sharpshooter, chris kyle, the most lethal sniper in u.s. military history. 6-year-old twins aidan and madelyn mcgraw play kyle's kids. the movie was released just last friday. >> i got to meet bradley cooper. and, and i also got to meet clint stewart. >> yes. >> they both have small speaking parts. the twins' parents are proud the kids were a part of this movie, not just because of the
