tv   Today in the Bay  NBC  January 21, 2015 6:00am-7:01am PST

6:00 am
right now, crews racing to fix a busy stretch of road in the south bay. what you need to know before you head out the door. star treatment for the world series trophies. we're live as the giants' brass prepares to send the hardware off in style. and a little less fog, and clouds around the south bay has allowed san jose to drop to a chilly 38 degrees this morning. we'll talk about that. plus 70s ahead in your microclimate forecast coming up. sad news for the south bay. we have a deadly crash on surface streets. we also have a couple of issues for south bay freeways. we'll sort those out. priceless would be the cost of this view right here. as we take a look outside on a cooler morning as rob just described, temperatures in the 30s in the south by. it is wednesday, january 21st and you are watching "today in the bay." >> from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." >> thank you for joining us.
6:01 am
i'm sam brock. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. riddledsbullets, police in the east bay are trying to piece together what led to a shooting on a bay area freeway. >> you saw the video of that car shot up. stephanie chuang joining us now live from police headquarters in concord. do we have any update at this point from police on what's going on with this investigation? >> good morning, sam and laura. so far, no updates. we do know, firmed with a dispatcher that someone is inside working on this investigation. but two crime scenes involved. it is very early on. what we do know is that chp shut down the left three lanes of westbound highway 4234 concord this morning for about three hours. and that is where they found a lot of bullet casings on the ground. about ten miles away, police found a white car punctured with bullet holes parked across the
6:02 am
emergency entrance of the kaiser permanente medical center. maybe a late '90s pontiac grand prix. we counted at least 15 bullet holes along the driver's side. it appears there was a freeway shooting that someone in the white car was able to drive it and the passengers to the hospital. still, we are waiting for many answers. of course, what led to shooting, what happened, and why it happened. we understand the people behind this shooting are still on the run. one officer was here about an hour ago, and he appeared to have reports, dropped something off, talked to someone inside, and he did say that concord pd is leading this investigation because it has more resources to handle a criminal investigation. of course, if we hear any updates, we'll bring it to you. live in concord, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, steph. happening now, crews in san jose are working tirelessly at this hour, trying to get a busy stretch of roadway back open in time for the morning commute.
6:03 am
this all began 15 hours ago when construction crews hit a gas line near the east ridge mall. >> kris sanchez is at the scene this morning on tully road. any idea when that road will reopen? >> reporter: we are hearing still this morning that the estimated time of opening is 7:00 this morning, and in fact, the clock just ticked 16 hours on this event. if you take a look at the crews that are still working there behind me, it's kind of ironic that there are two signs behind them that say massage, because i don't think that they're feeling relaxed nor lucky right now. they are under a lot of pressure to finish this up in time for the morning commute. the heaviest part, 7:00 here on tully road between capital expressway and quinby road. it begun yesterday around 3:00 in the afternoon, when a construction crew struck that four-inch high-pressure gas line that may or may not have been marked. pg&e saying they'll have more information about that coming up about 8:00 this morning. we do know that fire crews
6:04 am
rushed out here, two-alarm response. they immediately evacuated a number of businesses in the area. and about 60 pg&e customers lost their gas pressure, or rather their gas service. that has since been restored, because pg&e brought out some high pressure trucks in order to bring the pressure back into the line as that part was capped, and now the crews continue to work on that. but again, as you mentioned, the roadway is really the biggest concern for commuters this morning because tully is a very big thoroughfare here near east ridge mall, and it will remain closed until at least 7:00 this morning. so crews seem to be trying hard to get it fixed before that. we're talking about the stretch between quinby and capitol expressway. if anything changes, we'll have it for you in the next half-hour. for now, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thanks a lot, kris. >> busy area there. we're going to see how that's going. mike with more on the get-around there, and also news of a fatal
6:05 am
accident. >> we have a couple of big issues. even though the freeways themselves are not looking unusually busy, this is your typical build from north 101. let's start with where chris is talking about. the gas main break that happened last night and they're still trying to repair that. around quinby, that's where the closure is over toward capital expressway. that's a busy stretch of tully. locals will have to get around it. you can use capital expressway to and from the freeway. that's a little bit more mileage, but you can get through the area. that's your alternate. it's along surface streets. the on and off ramps are unaffected by that closure. farther north, this is what sam was talking about. great american parkway, we have word of a deadly crash there onty streets. the freeway's on and off ramps are clear, but getting past the area, they are jammed up right now. we have a view of the city of santa clara's traffic camera. this is at bunker hill.
6:06 am
you see the cones, you see traffic control in the area. they've turned the camera away from the crash because we don't want you to see anything that you shouldn't see, so we've deemed this as acceptable. you see the traffic control, stopping traffic from heading south down in toward the scene. great america parkway at tasmin is the area to avoid. this is going to be a big problem if this lasts another hour or two. we heard the crash happened just before 5:00 and this could be a couple of hours. so just before 7:00, we're hoping this reopens. we'll get you north, south, between 237 and 101. expect a lot of congestion, because there are a lot of businesses there as well. the rest of the by looking pretty normal. anywhere north of 92 in towards san francisco, or over toward the bay bridge toll plaza, moving at your typical clip. tri-valley, nothing dramatic there. greater visibility. it's the rest of your bay that does have an issue. concord. the bridges in north bay, fair field, velejo. they'll all likely have lower
6:07 am
visibility. by the time you get to the richmond bridge, once again, clear. no problems as far as your view across the bay. the bay bridge toll plaza also much less of a problem. but the volume of traffic is the issue, so the metering lights are on, but no drama out of the maze or the east shore freeway. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. it's 6:07 right now. time to check that microclimate forecast. let's take a peek outside. beautiful bay bridge. looks like -- we saw the toll plaza there backed up, but traffic moving along. >> people are out and about, and we're trying to fight through a cold patch right now to start your day. you were telling us before, we're hearing about temperatures that are a bit lower than maybe we're accustomed to here in the bay area. >> it's one thing the fog and the cloud tends to do overnight, it helps to trap the heat from the day before. we've had 40s for the morning around the south bay, but without the moisture in the air, you're down now to 38 degrees in san jose. and you can see napa. we do have some moisture, but it's with patches of fog down to
6:08 am
34 around the north by. here's that view. san jose, chilly, 38 degrees for you this morning, as we do have, again, some clear skies around the south bay. as we show you dublin right now, 40 degrees. 580 actually can see it this morning. not too much in the way of fog compared to yesterday morning around the tri-valley. san francisco near the water, a bit warmer at 48 degrees. the fog at its most dense around santa rosa, concord, into fairfield. some patchy dense fog. the visibility in the south bay, not too bad at all. so we do have the fog here in the north and east bay valley. should be gone by about lunchtime with some hazy sunshine. watch out if you're going to head to the coast or the inner bay for one more morning here. we've got another king tide showing up at just under seven feet at about 10:46 this morning, and then we'll see gradually lower high tides. temperatures today again in the 60s. no chance of rain, at least for now. that storm track staying off to the north, and we'll go from the mostly 60s today to possibly
6:09 am
mostly 70s ahead come saturday and sunday. high today, mid 60s. should see about 63 in san jose. ocean beach, 59 degrees. north bay temperatures in the low 60s out near the tri-valley. a bit warmer today without the fog to start off the morning. as we go through next few days, warmest days ahead for the next seven. the seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen. saturday, probably through about monday, increasing high clouds monday. and then finally a chance of rain arriving by this time next week, next tuesday and wednesday finally could get some rain before the end of the month. >> we certainly need it. thanks. the right to die with dignity. the debate that's going on there. it's going to take center stage in sacramento today. details of who's behind this new push. the two most powerful women in the world argue over money, and an interesting change for netflix. we'll take a look, coming up in business. plus, a red carpet sendoff for the world series trophy. we're live with the hardware and giants brass boarding a plane.
6:10 am
bound for the east coast.
6:11 am
6:12 am
absolutely. good morning to you there, sam and laura. onboard virgin america flight 5950. in about 15 minutes, wheels up from sfo here bound from jfk. there you're looking at it in the first class seat, with its mighty companion in 2a, the president and ceo of the san francisco giants. third time you've done this. how does it feel? >> it's great, because we've
6:13 am
been able to make this a bi-annual event. so our job is to make it an annual event to take the trophy back to our roots in new york on virgin america, our great partner. >> reporter: tell me about the importance of taking it back to new york. >> it's really interesting, because even people that weren't alive in 1958 when the giants moved from new york to san francisco, people in new york, their parents were alive, their grandparents were alive, so there's just a great love for the giants in new york. there's a bar in greenwich village that's a hub to giants life in new york. and the other thing is willie mays goes back. he's going to be there later this month. he goes on appearances with us and that's a very special thing. >> reporter: with regards to making this an annual event, how's the roster, how's the front office feeling about 2015? i know it's pre-opening day. >> we feel good. we have a number of players coming back. we won the world series without matt cain or angel pagan
6:14 am
healthy. we signed some players. the other thing that's interesting, characteristic of three world championship teams, the team you see in april isn't the team you see in september. we add on as we go. that's sort of our style. we think we can do it again. >> if you hit turbulence, that's very sharp. are you worried about your eyes or anything like that? >> we will protect this trophy at all cost. >> before life and limb? >> that's before life and limb. julia here, that's her assignment. she's assigned to the trophy. so we're really in good shape. we know that julia has the trophy in good shape. and the folks that are lucky enough to be on the 7:00 a.m. virgin america flight to new york are going to have some pictures taken on the flight. >> not just this one, but the 2012 and 2010 as well. thank you very much. virgin flight taking off for jfk for the continuation of a three-month trophy tour. reporting live here onboard
6:15 am
virgin america, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> you think bob is going to resurface, or is he on his way to new york? >> he might be in cargo pretty soon. the movie "the interview" is back in the news. >> this time, scott mcgrew, it is coming to netflix. >> one of the fastest turnarounds that we've ever seen. sony figures it's gotten about as much money out of this thing as it can get on demand. it's licensed the movie to netflix. starting saturday, you can watch it for free, in that you have to pay for netflix. we heard that news as netflix had its quarterly briefing with reporters and analysts and opened up its financials to investors. the company says it's going to expand the number of original shows, like "house of cards." you know, bottom line, it's cheaper to make "house of cards" than it is to pay other tv networks for the right to stream their shows. world leaders and ultra rich people are meeting in davos,
6:16 am
switzerland, for the world economic forum. tony blair has been blasted for his company's involvement in the iraq war. the ukrainian president went home early, as it becomes more and more apparent a full-scale russian invasion may be imminent. but the really big news is the near certainty that the european centralba bank is going to announce a huge relief to quantitative easing, to fight deflation and start getting the european economy back on the right track. these are the two most powerful women in the world. they're on opposite sides of this argument. the one on the left literally, janet yellen, head of our central bank, has hinted several times europe needs to do this. angela merkel on the right, head of europe's biggest country, says it's a mistake. she wants less spending, not more. so who's right? well, the bets are that yellen is right, or at least this guy says she is. he believes the government should spend as much as it can
6:17 am
during a fiscal crisis. and we took his side during the crisis, our own crisis with quantitative easing. stimulus packages, quantitative easing, bond buying. it worked. we're on track. best economy. lowest unemployment in years. we can't prove it was his ideas because we don't have an equal model, we didn't try the other two. but it seems to have worked and it will probably work for europe. >> very interesting. >> got to be able to borrow money at the end of the day. liquidity is so important. >> it is. >> thank you very much, scott. >> your box for third most powerful woman was just below that. here are today's stories. french security forces are getting better weapons to help fight terrorism. the prime minister made the announcement today and also said the country would hire 2600 new counterterrorism officers. lawmakers plan to make a law that would make wiretapping easier as well. new end of life options legislation will be unveiled today in sacramento. the bill is inspired by britney maynard, the bay area woman who
6:18 am
moved to oregon so she could end her life before brain cancer did. and president obama struck a defiant tone during last night's state of the union address. if you caught it, discussed plans to take on the gop-led congress and he proposed changes to the tax system and to higher education in general. we'll have more on the state of the union from a live report coming up from washington, and that's going to be at about 6:30. right now before you head out the door this morning, if that's where your headed, a look at our microclimate forecast with the view from above. pretty clear shot, as we've seen some fog in some areas in the past few days, but a clear one today. and kind of a cold one as well. >> especially in san jose. things have really dropped off. 38 degrees. we finally have some 30s around the south bay and parts of the north by. a police where you'll certainly see some 30s if you're going to head up this weekend would be the sierra. we're seeing temperatures there at least overnight to keep the
6:19 am
machine groomed slopes looking pretty nice. we'll see around alpine meadows and squaw valley, a base of almost three feet. the trail is open, about 34 at squaw valley. 60 still up there at alpine mead meadows. one thing about the dry weather, getting to the sierras quite easy. nice to add some snow to that. there is some hope for that, by the way, next week. so could see some improvement there in the sierra. temperatures this morning, here's the headline. down to 38 in san jose. 34 around napa for you this morning. still some patchy, dense fog. not from san francisco south, but out towards concord, fairfield, and santa rosa this morning. visible actually quite nice in san jose with the clear skies. the clear skies allowing all the heat we gained from the day before to escape back out into space. foggy start for our friends, especially in the north by and east bay valleys. that should improve before lunchtime today and we'll eventually see a little less fog over the next few mornings as winds begin to turn offshore and the atmosphere continues to warm up and dry out as we head into the weekend. but speaking of dry, this year
6:20 am
is so far mirroring what we did last year, which was the all-tame record for a dry january around the bay area. less than a quarter inch throughout the month last year. so far, other than the drizzle we've had in san jose, not much in the way of measurable rainfall. but next week, there is some hope as high pressure, at least for now, is beginning to build and provide us with a warming trend for the weekend. we're beginning to see offshore winds, highs in the 70s, but then very interesting, this time next week, we're going to see a low here west of baja, california, that will at least reintroduce a chance of seeing some rain. colder systems to follow that could give us a chance of more snow middle through next week. today's highs, mid 60s around the south bay. close to 60 in san francisco. low 60s again around the north bay and tri-valley. for the weekend, highs starting to climb. maybe close to records. we'll be close to that at least saturday through monday. next tuesday at the real right-hand side of the border. if you had an extra day, you would see it. chance of showers coming up
6:21 am
through the south from the middle part of next week. the city of santa clara's traffic cameras. this is great america parkway on bunker hill. traffic coming toward us. it's diverted off the roadway to either side because of the closure. just south of there. let's show you the map as we talk about the deadly crash, the reason why that intersection is closed. major santa clara intersection. here's your south bay. there's your traffic flow. typical patterns for the freeways. this is in santa clara, city streets behind great america and levi stadium. great america parkway at tasmin drive. one of your major surface streets. those are alternates to get you through the area. if you are headed to that business center, there are a lot of businesses over there as well as a number of hotels. you'll have to use local traffic control to guide you around the intersection until further notice. the investigation continues from a deadly crash in santa clara. meanwhile, the south bay freeway is moving slowly.
6:22 am
moving toward the tri-valley, as we look at west 580, we see a standard build there as well. the big change from yesterday is that there's better visibility. fog not so much of an issue in this part of the east by, but it is farther north heading through concord. the east shore freeway. a similar pattern throughout valejo. a live look across through oakland, we'll show you the views are much better here. we couldn't show you this shot. this is northbound coming up past 98. i don't see a disturbance in the flow of freeway traffic. the bay bridge toll plaza, if you're passing from oakland in toward san francisco, visibility is much better than yesterday, but you still have your become-up. and there was an earlier fender bender reported on the 880 overcrossing. note, there may be something to slow you down just off of that bend and the connecter. back to you. >> some accidents causing drivers trouble this morning.
6:23 am
thank you very much. >> busy morning out there. up next, if you have the flu, you need it, but odds are rare. you can't find it. what am i talking about? it's the key medicine missing from shelves at pharmacies across the bay area.
6:24 am
6:25 am

browser, which allows users to post anonymously. fbi agents arrested him as he picked up what he believed was a box containing ricin. he was charged with trying to obtain a biological weapon. new headaches for flu sufferers this morning. many people can't get cough relief, even with a prescription. >> both small pharmacies and big chains are running short of cough syrup with codeine. the only places still getting consistent shipments are the big hospitals. generic companies only make a certain amount of cough syrup every single year and now manufacturers cannot keep up with this year's busy flu season and the demand. >> sometimes being turned away because there's not enough cough medicines to go around. >> some patients are being given smaller bottles to kind of ration the supply. right now, pharmacies say they still have a good supply of over-the-counter cough medicine, but a tough scenario there. opening bell just minutes away. we're going to break down the early numbers next with scott mcgrew.

6:31 am
what are the chances his proposals get any traction? >> reporter: some of them, perhaps taxes on the wealthy, a nonstarter here. the president is now taking his plans publicly. >> the shad deof crisis has passed. and the state of the union is strong. >> reporter: president obama's state of the union took on everything from climate change to cuba, immigration, and isis. >> we will continue to hunt down terrorists. >> reporter: and he previewed what's coming in his budget in two weeks, free community college, paid sick leave, a push to raise the minimum wage. policies he says will help the middle class. >> and these policies will continue to work, as long as politics don't get in the way. let's set our sights higher than a single oil pipeline. >> his push isn't likely to go far. republicans in charge here would rather cut spending. >> and balance the budget. with meaningful reforms.
6:32 am
not higher taxes. >> i think it was a rose colored glasses speech. a lot of his proposals were expensive, new entitlements. >> reporter: some republicans actually like the president's ideas. >> the president presented some great aspirational goals. the question is, how are we going to get there? the devil is in the details. >> work with the president. let's find the wins here and see what we can deliver. >> reporter: it's a new game plan for a divided congress. so today, president obama feels that game plan for the public starting in idaho, where he'll visit boise state, make some comments there, and also visit a lab where some students have started developing prototypes of certain products. he'll get a chance to highlight technology and education. laura? >> always interesting. thanks so much, tracy. reaction to the president's speech was actually mixed here in the bay area, but some groups were energized. education advocates watching in santa clara university say the president brought his a game. they were pleased with where he
6:33 am
stood on social issues. they also believe his vision for free community college education could benefit everyone. >> you still come out with a degree. the better the education. >> i think he was just very honest. >> others we spoke with felt the president may have left a few items on the table. for example, some say he didn't do enough to forward his agenda on immigrants' rights. to watch the president's full address and the republican response to it, you can find all of that on our website, nbcbayarea.com. also, vice president joe biden is going to be on the "today" show this morning answering some questions about the aforementioned taxes, executive power, foreign policy. all of that coming up after our newscast at 7:00 this morning. time to take a look at the
6:34 am
forecast, as we take a peek outside, this time from the south bay, waiting the sun's arrival over downtown san jose and the rest of the bay area for that matter. >> that is a good connection. we did have the clouds in san jose, but not really to prevent the temperatures from dropping off. >> down to 38 degrees in san jose. patches of low clouds. you can see the bay bridge, 48 degrees. no fog there, but into the north bay, napa over towards concord, into fairfield, that's where you'll see visibility at times
