new questions are raised after both new england coach bill belichick and tom brady spoke out denying knowing anything about underinflated footballs. peter alexander is outside in foxborough with the latest. good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning to you. neither the wicked genius coach or the quarterback tom brady has been able to silence the skepticings. yesterday in the news conference brady surprised a lot of people saying as of late thursday, four days after the scandal broke he still had not been contacted by nfl investigators. with the pressure on the patriots mounting, three-time super bowl champion brady forced to play defense. just days after laughing off the controversy. >> would you care to weigh in on that? >> i think i heard it all at this point. >> reporter: brady was hit hard with tough questions. >> can you answer is tom brady a

>> i want to talk about the nfl and its failure to pick up the phone and call tom brady. let's look at what brady and bell acheek said. as far as you are concerned did they do anything to help themselves? is what they are saying about this plausible, credible in your mind? >> i actually found belichick more plausible even though it was a kaz of plaudsible deniability. i talked to a famous coach last night who said that he had never asked a question in his career about air pressure in the balls even though the coach told me how they used to work these balls over once they got them. the brady thing was sketchier because he told you that he's presented these footballs, i can't believe that we're actually treating a bag of balls like a national obsession but he gets these footballs 2 1/2 hours before the game, they are exactly right. he doesn't want anybody to touch them, then once the game starts he can't tell the two pounds has come out of these footballs. but does that mean he orchestrated this thing?

i can't say that. >> do you think this is a case where as we now know about tom brady he likes to have his footballs a little deflated where he lets the ball boys push it to the line, and then perhaps some other factor, like weather came into play and now you suddenly are below that threshold? >> you know, i was thinking that this may be a little like bridgegate. could we say that chris christie ordered those lanes closed on the george washington bridge, no, we can't. but could somebody on the staff have thought well, this is something tom might like me to do because we know how he likes these footballs to feel. yeah. but again, we don't know what the nfl has learned. and just because they haven't talked to brady yet he may be the last guy they talk to, and when they do talk to him, he might be the same guy that we saw yesterday which was one of the great quarterbacks of all time, looking like he was running to be class president. >> let me pick up on that. i think that was, if there was sen stunner out of the news conference that no one from the

league had even so much as made a cursory phone call to brady himself. i get it, maybe they want to do an investigation, they are going to get all of their ducks in a row. not even picking up the phone saying hey, what's your side of the story, what do you know about this? >> i don't know how this thing is laying out. they may be talking to everybody else that they can talk to with the patriots, before they get to brady. and then we may find out what happened. and here's the thing, savannah. even in a world where we pretty much find out everything we want to flow about everybody, and we're having an unspoken thought it's against the law, we may never know exactly how this happened because everybody may do what brady and belichick did and say i have no idea how the air came out of these footballs, so apparently the only thing i conclude is these balls deflated themselves. >> okay, one last question though. i think what people are wondering about the nfl is are they trying to slow walk the investigation to get them past

the super bowl? >> they needed this story like a hole in the head after the year they had with ray rice and adrian peterson and all of the heat that goodell has taken. do they want this to spill over into super bowl week, probably not. i keep thinking this may be wrapped up by the weekend. but you know, i'm an optimist. >> mike lumica, we always think of you as an optimist. always good to get your perspective. >> thanks. in other news the fate of two japanese men held hostage by isis is uncertain this morning. the terror group threatened to kill them within 72 hours, if a $200 million ransom was not paid. that deadline passed overnight. richard engel is nbc's chief foreign correspondent. good morning to you. normally in the past we have heard from isis. unfortunately, seeing video of what they have carried out. is it unusual that we're hearing nothing this morning? >> reporter: it is not that unusual, in fact.

isis has always made good on its threats in the past, but its timing has not always been specific. in fact, with the american journalist steven sotloff there were deadlines not met. ultimately he was killed. what we've seen with these two japanese hostages is that the kidnappers made an outrageous demand, asked for $200 million and said they want to be paid within 72 hours. that's impossible almost under any circumstances, especially when japan made it clear it has no intention of honoring this demand. we're learning a little bit more about the two hostages themselves. one of the two japanese was a self-styled security consultant, he decided to go to syria, to find a job, to change his life. he had had a divorce in japan, he had a suicide attempt. he's been described as something of a lost soul. the other hostage was a friend

of his, a journalist, and experienced journalist, who decided to go into syria to do reporting but also to find and rescue his friend. now the two men have their fates intertwined. >> ironic twist. richard engel on this story. thank you very much. here at home wide area of the east is bracing for a treacherous combination of snow, ice and rain and al, we could be seeing substantial travel problems over the weekend. >> that's right. into the beginning of next week because there's not one but two storms. here's what the storm left as you got out of new mexico and on into texas. we're talking about upwards of a foot or more of snow causing treacherous travel. here's where we stand now. the system itself is going to be making its way through the south. we've got heavy rain. we may be seeing severe thunderstorms as we go to the map, show you what's happening. atlanta, they have heavy rain, probably airport delays this morning. rain right through the early afternoon hours. this system now pushes up out of

after battling pneumonia. u.s. leaders remembering him for his efforts to modernize the country and as an ally in the fight against terrorism. at home in saudi arabia his legacy much more complicated. aimen, good morning. >> good morning. yes, saudi arabia is the world's largest producer of oil and the birthplace of islam. to say it's an important country in the region and to us at home would be an understatement. that's why the death of the saudi monarch is sure to have implicationings not only on the kingdom but for us back in the u.s. who takes over next is just as important. this morning saudi arabia is grieving, mourners paying final respects to king abdullah and the house of the royal family. the anoujsment was made on state tv. king abdullah, the saudi monarch and one of america's closest arab allies died after a recent illness. president obama described him as a leader who was always candid and had the courage of his convictions.

at home, he pushed through economic reforms and tried to modernize education. opening the kingdom's first co-ed university. a close u.s. ally king abdullah was instrumental in supporting america's invasion of iraq during the first gulf war. former president george h.w. bush calling it quote a moment of unparalleled cooperation between our two great nations. in the early aftermath of 9/11 saudi arabia doubled down on its relationship with the u.s., becoming a key ally in the u.s. war on terror, and has been a lasting relationship through the obama administration. but some critics said american praise went too far for an absolute monarch who ruled undemocratic kingdom with a poor human rights record. president obama criticized taking this bow when he came face-to-face. the relationship has been challenged. king abdullah increasingly concerned about the u.s. nuclear

negotiations with iran, saudi arabia's regional enemy. he was also frustrated the u.s. didn't do more to stop the blood shed in syria's civil war. the new king will have to deal with two major threats to the kingdom, to the south al qaeda in the arabian peninsula is a force that wants to top tl monarch and they aren't the only ones, to the east in iraq is the group isis which wants to overthrow the kingdom. >> thanks a lot. the president of yemen has resigned under pressure from rebels, this complicated american efforts to combat al qaeda in that country. and raise fears that the arab world's poorest country may fracture into mini states. the prime minister there has stepped down. the massive fire at a complex in new jersey has been determined to be accidental. maintenance workers making repairs accidentally sparked the blaze with a blow torch. wednesday's fire consumed the complex that sits across the hudson river from new york city,

monitoring about 100 colleagues of the workers who have been infected with measles here and offering free vaccinations to all park employees. california public health officials stress if you've been immunized this park and places like it are safe. if not or if your child is under a year and too young for the shot, you may want to think twice. for these disneyland visitors the trip's all about mickey, not measles. >> we made sure she had her vaccine. >> it has some staying away. >> we were going to take our son who is only 8 months old so he hasn't been vaccinated. >> we don't want to put our son in jeopardy. >> we decided to wait until things calm down, i guess. >> reporter: disney is now offering free measles shots and immunity tests to all its park employees. after five workers came down with the disease in california, part of the outbreak now linked

being made in an american lawsuit. prince andrew did make an unprecedented statement last night repeating denials he had sexual relations with a 17-year-old girl. >> firstly, i think i must for the record to refer to the events that have taken place in the last few weeks. and i just wish to reiterate and to reaffirm the statement which has already been made on my behalf by buckingham palace. my focus is on my work. >> reporter: former british prime minister tony blair and gordon brown were at the event standing side by side with the prince who left still not answering questions. >> reporter: sir, the woman at the center of this -- >> reporter: the woman from florida is seeking to join a

lawsuit against the u.s. government after a plea deal was reached with prince andrew's former friend, jeffrey epstein convicted of soliciting an underaged girl for prostitution alleged that epstein served 13 months of an 18-month sentence and is now a registered sex offender. she alleged epstein paid her $15,000 after she had sex with prince andrew. legal experts say his statement may not be the end of this scandal. >> u.s. lawyers will say, look, he hasn't made a statement under oath, he hasn't dealt with the detailed allegations. from his point of view, he's made two statements through buckingham palace and an on-camera denial. >> alan, good morning. good to see you. >> reporter: yesterday epstein's lawyer alan berkowitz talked about the claims and called them lies. >> do you know her? have you ever seen her? have you ever met her? >> i've never seen her, never met her, and i challenge her to come on your show and repeat her allegations on television.

correspondent jeff rosin has the story. >> good morning to you. police officers are brave and heroic doing so much for us every day, and they are being asked to do more and more. consider this -- you and i would get a ticket for driving while talking on a cell phone. it's of course dangerous. but cops are exempt from those laws. in fact often required as part of their jobs to talk on cell phones use their police radio, even type on a computer all as they drive. and the results can be tragic. officers plowing into families because they're distracted and so much of it is caught on police dashcam. austin texas, a police officer driving in his squad car. what you can't see, he's using his police computer and right here runs a stop sign. slamming into a man on a motorcycle who was seriously hurt. cot anl grovetage grove, minnesota, this officer on his computer too, when he turns in front of an suv. >> i got to go.

>> reporter: an in tarrant county texas, this police dashcam video when the officer checks his messages online and speeds through an intersection. [ bleep ] all across the country, horrific crashes with distracted officers. [ bleep ] losing control. kim lost her two daughters when an illinois state trooper plowed into them. he was responding to a call at 126 miles per hour talking on his cell phone and using his police computer. this is all that was left of the girls' car. they were killed instantly. >> this crash was completely preventable. i had absolutely no idea that a lot of police officers have more training with their firearms than they do with their driving but yet they drive every part of

good friday morning to you. it's 7:56. i'm sam prok. we're following breaking news still in san francisco this morning, that is where a police standoff continues in its 14th hour. it's been going on since about 6:00 last night. this is in ingelside neighborhood of san francisco. it's also where police got a call about a domestic disturbance there as we said about 6:00. they say a man locked himself inside of a room of a house, and then indicated that he had a gun, which police have not confirmed. s.w.a.t. team was on scene for some time but has since left the neighborhood. at one point police threw a phone through a window in hopes of just talking to the man. traffic is again tro valley y, where a fiery crash left one person dead. all eastbound lanes were closed for more than three hours. two cars were involved in that crash and two other people were injured. let's shift gears and find

"no matter where a woman was in life" -- this is a destiny's child song you seem toed a adhere to -- "she should always be able to cater to her man's

needs, prepare his meals, draw his bath marx saj his feet every now and then." you want to own up to this? >> yes. i wrote it. but pretty much what i was saying when you're in a relationship and the man is doing his part, a small gesture is preparing his favorite meal or massaging his feet shows you appreciate us. >> how is that working out for you? >> i give a great massage. >> keep that shot on frank frank. we have one more. you talk about cheating. men will cheat because to us it's just sex with no real motion nal attachment so we view it as being harmless. is that really how you think guys feel cheat, no big deal? >> some do because it's -- like i said, there's no real emotional attachment so to some menitis a physical act so they feel that it happens, drunken night, they don't necessarily kill themselves over it not to say they don't feel bad about it but it happens and they go on with their lives. >> let's move on here so we don't have to put frank in the witness protection program.

>> yes. >> what about this whole idea of questions -- you're asking women can they handle the truth, all right? a lot of women will ask men questions and you guys believe at times they really don't want to hear the answers to those questions. give me examples. >> well prime example would be if you're going out on a date with your significant other and she comes out of the bathroom dressed, well-dressed and says, honey, how do i look in this dress, do i look too fat? what do i answer? >> of course you don't look too fat. >> the answer is -- have you lost weight? >> absolutely. but the real question is can she handle hearing the fact that she does look fat in that dress. >> why would you even broach that subject? who cares if she can handle the truth? you're going to get killed. that's a lose-lose. >> they say they want the truth. do they really want the truth. >> is that what this book is supposed to be like a dose of the cold hard truth? >> it's for men and women, and we just wanted to answer these questions from why men cheat, can you handle the truth, stroking their ego. >> okay.

are you getting a lot of questions on e-mail accounts and things like that? >> load. loads. >> all week long. it's been great. >> let's get to specifics. first one is for jean and this is from christy carlson. when should one refinance? our rate is 4% but we could get 3%. is it worth it? >> and generally if you can get 3% the answer the probably yes. but the thing you have to do is a little bit of math. figure out how much this refi is going to cost you and then take the monthly savings and divide the cost of the rhee phi byefi by the cost of the savings. if you'll be in the house more months than that it's good to go. >> can you throw a good percent at me? >> maybe 1% the cost of the deal but sometimes they'll roll it into the interest rate so people can pay nothing and do a no-cost-down one. >> jenna, you ready? >> ready. >> this is from jayne.

i just started walking four miles a day briskly, changed my diet et cetera. so far ten pounds in a month but i've hit a plateau. what do i do? >> congratulations, first of all. ten pounds is nothing to pooh-pooh. it's a fantastic number. now you want to change it up because your body know what is it has to do to get out four miles a day. mix things up. whatever you want to do to add to it walk faster walk longer add a spin class, some strength training. when you confuse your muscles you'll burn more calories by having to work harder. i say change things up and you will see a difference in the next month. >> jenna, thank you very much. jill you're on deck. this is from jessica sullivan. it says my kids school projects my first first grade work birthday cards, just can't part with them. not a question but you get the idea. >> i get the idea and i come from a mother who's saved every single project since birth even if i write hi on a post-it. if you keep everything and put them in boxes and put them in

the attic you're never going to see them. so when your child comes home with a project, take a picture of it. we all have phones now, take a picture, and there are sites like picoboo and they'll turn your projects into a book with the date on it. you can put it into a book and see everything and get rid of the clutter because you'll never look at it anyway. >> i like that. joy, last but not least, this comes from kelly. i removed tie et coke/pepsi after a long mental addiction. what can i drink besides water that is healthy and that doesn't contain aspertame? >> a i love this question and a lot of people can relate. it's always a good idea to pull back on artificial sweeteners. take advantage of the naturally flavored seltzer waters. no added sugar, no artificial sweeteners just carbonated water, poppy fizz like soda and natural essence from fruits.

if you want to intensify the flavor add a shot of 100% fruit juice into the glass, a few extra calories. you can take fruit juice, put it in ice cube tray freeze it and add those fruit cubes into a glass of water and as they melt you get a really nice flavor. lastly brew a big batch of interesting flavored teas and then pour it right into a pitcher over ice and stash it in your researcher refrigerator. great ideas, no artificial sweetener. >> every friday i walk over and say these ladies know what they're talk about. you're good. very impress. joy, jean jenna, thank you very much. keep your questions coming. coming up, brooke shields will stop by.
