because she says it's too ricky at night with a busted street light. >> maria says she is fearful someone is hiding in the bushes and the seniors who live on the street can't run away from the potential danger. >> he says they are forced to lock their doors early before it gets dark and then there is the track r track. the seniors say the gardening debris has been sitting there for months. no one is concerned to pick it up. >> my main concern is the graffiti. >> she says all of rock avenue needs revitalization, too many massage parlors. >> that's where i shop and make friends with owners and ask them, can i buy the paint? how can we clean this up? the response is the owners have

when she comes everywhere with cash in hand for college with me back on communidad devvalle. welcome to the show. >> thank you. >> so again this is an opportunity, no excuses that we can't afford to pay for college him you have the money? you know how to get the money? >> we know how to get the money, how to get it. how to help students and families complete the applications for student aid which is now making state aid available for students. >> even the senior jim bell sent out an e-mail saying these workshops are coming up. he want foss make sure families and students know which ones to fill out and how to do that. >> it's a state wide campaign. we have support from senator bell coming out to offer the

citizens the federal application and state application as well. this is free asis tan for any high cool student and college student and we have lawn cares, hundreds out there, civil workshops taking place now through the end of february up until the march subsidiary deadline for the pell grant applications and soldiers who speak spanish and volunteer assistance as well no kid in our family should pay to complete the application. this is free assistance. it is done at a computer. you bring your apework and everything to make the application. we have experts there at the workshops, making sure that people understand how to complete the application. >> we will give you information in just a bit macsure you have

your pen and paper. >> tell us what that need is like and maybe some of the student don't know. >> the need is hard. the am we get per day with all kind of questions and not knowing what application to fill out. what information is excessive. >> but what do you tell them in regards to you fourth quarter, don't let that kind of deter you from filling it out. i say fill it out regardless because there is an infinite amount hoff financial aid and it's very easy. >> a lot of the people are talking about community college. how did that help you mobilize and maybe helping more students if that's even possible? >> well it is. it's very popular and just the amount of assistance there is and what programs, what you can

get out of community college is very important and the amount of financial aid that's available, it's amazing. >> you have these workshops. what should folks bring with them to a different pair? >> we want to make sure families come prepared with any tax informati information. >> it's good financial informatio information. >> with. >>. >> so they qualify for aid as soon as possible. you can go back and take the application with her. you can complete application.

>> those forms can be intimidating. they shouldn't be that's why you spokes e folks are there to make it easy for them. unless you are there with somebody who has been there afternoon done that. >> correct. but there is a lot of emphasis we provide them. we walk them through lean by line and tell them all that stuff. we help them on a one on one bas basis. >> so you can help them through 345u6 2nd? >> all through the month-of-january and february, student and families can look up the website nearest them. some of them are high schools we hope they attend. >> they can be afraid to pull out a student loan. they shouldn't be the right are low for students? >> correct. >> the workshops are up and down

the street lights were ai called your office you told me this was clean in 24 hours. talk about your reaction when you see the blight in your district and how acceptable that is. >> well, it's knopp not acceptable. i thank you for having me again. this is an important conversation, district five has felt it was left behind in the shadows of the progress of the city of san jose. when you look at something like we showed a second ago the blight in our district and any part of the city that represents district 5, we will talk about that in san jose. it's unacceptable. people, residents. they want to live in a neighborhood that's clean, free of illegal dumping. >> that they can walk the street

in mid-afternoon or when the sun goes down and they say they want to have children. they have this kind of condition, six, taking place for over aer 82 is absolutely unacceptable. so when i committed to you that we would have it cleaned up in 48 hours, my staff got on it immediately. it is the city policy that once you make a phone call, within 48 hours, they will take care of it. now, if that doesn't happen, you should be calling your representative and saying, letting them know what's happening. because it's the only way we're going to know how to address this decisions that are in our system sometimes that hams. but to have that kind of a degree or that kind of a condition for over a year is absolutely unacceptable. so i'm very proud our office was able to help the community and the residents take care of an issue that is very important to them. >> they called your office and they were very, very belized it happened. >> we saw it on your social media. they were posting on ours as

well. we did phone calls from people that were very happy. sometimes it's a clean thing they are asking for him that's not much to ask sfwr we have a clip we want to show you. tell us what this is like. this is your council. you are sitting there with the other council, what was that like for you? >> well, it's, i didn't go there for a few weeks. this is the business of the day this is where you vote on policy and help create policy, it's really to further the quality of life for our resident. so more me, it's a great honor that our east side resident voted me in, in june and that i now have an opportunity to sit at the table where zegs are made. it will trickle down and impact their lives. it's so important to hear from our residents. but it's really important to be

at that table making the decisions. for me it's a great honor. >> what do you tell the folks that live in the neighborhood, in the mt. pleasant area? who live in a neighborhood where are you represented? what do you want them to know about snut. >> well, a few things, we have and i had a light discussion with the rest of the city council. it's quite enjoyable. i claim we have one of the most diverse and it truly is the area that has challenges and has had its share of neglect so it is a community with the most promise and possibility of what's to come so what i tell my neighbors and the resident, is imagine it so that it will happen it may not have happened in the past. it may take a while. but imageb it. work with me.

help me realize the vision that you have in your own community. >> when you see cranes, that means progress. you don't see that much of the cranes going up. which means the progress is stalled a little bit. will we be seeing more cranes? >> i'm glad we met up. in meetings with our city staff, they explain that east san jose is one of the areas that has the least amount of development when you look at the city as a whole. you will see it take place near the core of the city. we happen to be east of 101 but there is again so much possibility. my message to shows folks interesting in exploring, east san jose is such a great place to live. i think that for many resident in the city of san jose, there has to be an exception of what

our corner of the city is all about. i invite folks. i am trying to bridge relationships with other residents from other parts of the city. because i want them to come and see the absolute feeling of the beauty that is east san so hay. >> you are probably getting bombarded with homeowners associations and everybody asking you to come to their meetings. we can't make it to every single meeting. but your message to those associations clamoring to get other statures there? >> we have sometimes made it ha hard remember it's a daunting task. it's so necessary because my end goal is to make sure that our residents feel like they are a part of the process, that they are engaged in the process so part of that is making sure they have facetime and quantity time with tear relationships.

either myself or my staff. but we were elected if june. my staff it is the residents of the staff, we are here to work for them. so it is my hope that we will join forces and that collaboratively we will be able to move forward in a very aggressive agenda there is the web address and the phone number to call. we'll be back and talk more with the council.

immigrant parent bo worked tear entire lives just about at the delmonty and yes prepatienting to have 3rd grade and 6th grade implications and understand the strong work ethic was very important in order for you to get ahead regardless of otherkirk social circumstances. so my work ethic comes directly from my parents who work so hard for the del monty corporation. because of that, they were able make tear american dreams come true, which was to have daughters, have their holes, be able send tear.off to college and then the rest, of course, is the systems that were made along the way because of my career. i think anybody has great possibility and potential to want to work hard, your honor and integrity in what you are doing. >> very good. you can't do it alone. you feed the work of the entire count sim. tell us how receptive the mayor

has been to your efforts there and tell us what you say. i'll have you do it. that's pretty incredible. >> a week ago, yes, thank you. we had the mexican heritage plaza and i was pren pleasantly surprised because alongside of me were almost every single council member who sat up on stage with me. and that is highly unusual to take place and it was such a pleasure to have them there because i wanted our community to understand that all tow i am their immediate representative and they voted me into office, truly, it is all the council men that represent them. they make the decision and collectively move this agenda forward. to me, it was important. it was also quite spectacular in my opinion to have the mayor present there and say a few impersonal words to our community and as he put it, the sun rises in the east and so folks are understanding that in

order for channel gate to be fully successful and to truly progress as we were hoping that san jose will be the third largest city in the city of california, the tenth largest in the u.s. that you can fought be successful without them being successful. to truly be progressive and successful. you have to make sure you are taken care of. >> you are talking about being on several prominent committees, it's a big part. >> awas apointed to the rules and open committee. for a newcomeer, it's an accomplishment. i am honored the mayor appointed me to that. i am appointed as a vice care to the neighborhood communication committee. this is a committee that deals directly with after school

programs, library hours and work plans we will be addressing and lastly i was appointed to public safety and finance. it's such an issue to make sure we have still one of the safest large cities in the country. >> right. councilwoman has a lot of work to do on the east side. she is already doing it. she is hitting the ground running. the number to call, final to the. >> well, i'll say it again, i'm very honored, very happy to be representing east san jose and we use the hashtag it matters. it's quite a bit of momentum. people are happy with that. we want to understand that people understand. >> that they get the message loud and clear east san jose matters. >> that might be the name of my new book t. sunrises in the east. thank you very much. >> thank you so much. >>
