get that suv, that sbeuburban. and now some of that glass on the left, it's a very precarious situation because there are concerns that the structure on top may give way if there's too much force. you can see this happened around 2:00 in the morning here. inside, this is a wells fargo history museum. and there's a stage coach. on the website, it's actually one used in the 1860s on display. behind it, a lot of counters. there were artifacts displayed in the counters including gold nuggets and that was confirmed with an investigator this morning. that is one of the things they're looking at was taken from this scene by suspects who were armed. we also want to update, there were earlier reports that the suspects held up at least one security guard here with an assault weapon. he's saying that was not the case. the suspects were armed but not with an assault weapon. so the question is, where are these people are.
6:03 am
and how much they got away with, right now, trying to deal with getting this suv out of here. that's the investigator looking at the scene. as you look up a little bit, also directly above where the suv was, you can see security cameras. and investigators are taking a look at every possible bit of evidence that they can. that is the latest from montgomery where this smash and grab occurred. >> quite a contrast there, the suv and the stage coach right next to each other. thanks, steph. also breaking news in san jose. charred vehicles now in a carport, in a fourplex, the result of an overnight fire. and this morning, a man coming home late was being called a hero for getting everybody out of that neighborhood. >> and marianne favro is live in cupertino with a happy situation. >> reporter: good morning, neighbors are calling this man a

hero. they say he was very alert. he pounded on the doors to make sure everyone got out safely. take a look at where the fire started. at one of the vehicles and quickly spread to one of the three in the carport. fortunately, the flames did not reach into the units. the seven people were evacuated from the four-unit townhomes. and firefighters say a neighbor who was coming home visiting a friend who just had a baby in the hospital, saw the flames and then sprang into action. >> this guy did everything right. i mean, he pulled up in his car. he noticed a little bit of smoke. he wasn't quite sure what he was seeing and he saw flames and that's when he thought, oh, my god, the car's on fire. he called 911. and as soon as he hung up with 911, he began knocking on the doors and woke everybody up. he got everybody out. >> reporter: investigators are trying to determine if the fire
6:05 am
started because of an electrical problem with one of the vehicles or if there was another cause. you can see firefighters are looking at each of the vehicles here in this carport. now residents in three of the units have been allowed to return to their homes. but one units does have water damage, so these people cannot return quite yet. reporting live, marianne favro, "today in the bay." breaking news, overseas, gunmen in libya stormed a luxury hotel killing at least three guards and five foreigners. this is an attack that happened at the quincy hotel in tripoli just along the mediterranean sea. a hotel staffer said five masked attackers wearing bulletproof vests stormed that hotel and started firing randomly in the lobby. a libyan security official says it is now under control, but they did not say what happened to the gunmen. developing right now,

6:07 am
depends on where you're living right now. let's check with christina tracking the rain quickly coming up. >> hey, good morning to you. yeah, very light shower activity. i don't think we actually need to carry the umbrella. maybe breaking out the versace, that designer gear, yeah, go ahead and grab it. we don't want you to ruin those expensiive duds. the showers just start to work their way into the south bay and maybe east bay getting a little more action as well. temperatures look at these numbers this morning. in the 60s to kick off the day. 61 degrees in south bay. 63 on the peninsula. 64 degrees right now in san francisco. on our way to the upper 60s all across the board. it's going to be mild out there. kind of a damp day. warm, breezy an damp. watch out for wind as well. if you have morning hours, that wind will be by its strongest by the evening. cooler day on the way tomorrow.
6:08 am
that warming returns, we're going to hit the 70s again into the weekend. more on that coming up in just minutes. back to you. today, the san francisco board of supervisors is set to approve a nearly $3 million payment to the family of a woman whose body was found in a stairwell. the city reached this deal with elaine spalding's family last month. spalding was found in the stairwell of sf general 17 days after she disappeared from her hospital room. this was back in 2013. the payment will be sent to spalding's two adult children. >> happening today, doctors at the university of california's student health centers are walking off the job this morning. the doctors unionized in 2013, and they're getting contract talks with u.c. the union claims the university is not giving them information that they need to bargain for their contract. the student health center will remain staffed during the

strike, though some nonemergency procedures have been cancelled. san jose leaders are looking at what they can do to make a well traveled road a little safer. that's where a jogger was hit and killed in yerba buena road just blocks away from silver creek high school. neighbors say it sounded like the two cars were racing. something they say happens a lot where they live. police arrested the two drivers and booked them on vehicular manslaughter charges. and also a charge of reckless driving. neighbors want more safety measures on that road. >> right now, you would like to hopefully speed up your commute to work this morning, mike. >> we'll show you what we have on the drive around the bay, sam and kris. take a look at the bay. this toll plaza where we have all the lanes blocked by the metering lights -- actually not blocked. held up there. you look at the maps, we're showing a pretty smooth drive on the approach.
6:10 am
top of the screen, east shore, a little slow in your commute direction. look over to the right itself, that red triangle, westbound 580. that megaphone, that's where the coliseum is shouting out there's a gayle tonight. but a vehicle on the shoulder of northbound 580. it has cleared. west 580 has a slow. one lane blocked by keller avenue. with an kreearlier crash. towards the trivalley, west 580. southbound 680, and a crash, that looks close to the shoulder. it's not completely off the roadway. this is typical for the trivalley. and as we move farther south, we're looking at 152 that has one-way traffic control continuing overturned big rig with 30,000 pounds of glass
6:11 am
there. we're worried about the roadway, having one direction at a time flowing from casa de fruta. and i-5. the rest of the south bay looks nice as well. just that one incident with 101. you see the volume is just building up a little bit. not a big problem. no issues from palo alto all the way from san francisco. across the golden gate bridge to the north gate. cleared again. >> that is nice to hear. who is going to win the super bowl? plenty of people have their predictions. one authority thinks it knows. the madden video game. we'll have the answer on that. plus, can a big pile of money actually end up getting you fired? we'll take a look coming up in business.
6:12 am
6:13 am
>> announcer: you're watching
6:14 am
"today in the bay." welcome back. good tuesday morning to you. i'm meteorologist christina loren. taking a live look at your radar. this might surprise you this morning. showers coming down near the golden gate bridge. we also have serious wind to tell you about before we make our way out the front dor this morning. we'll let you know how much longer this will last and how much more is expected in your neighborhood in just moments. we'll track the showers that we're continuing to talk about. so far, the roadways look fine across the san mateo bridge. a live shot here. you're going to see it build on the peninsula because all the folks heading there. and problems farther south in oakland coming up. here's today's top stories, this morning, san francisco police looking for the robbers who smashed into a bank and stole gold nuggets. this happened at the wells fargo museum in montgomery just a few hours ago. at least one security guard inside when it happen investigators are trying to
6:15 am
figure out what started a fire in san jose. they say it started in a c carport. and burned three vehicles. a man on his way home banged on the doors. and the country awaits super bowl xlix. we'll hear from the players and the coaches ahead of the big game. the new england patriots arrived in phoenix for the super bowl yesterday ahead of the storm in the east. and the seattle seahawks got there on sunday. all right. lots of predictions about who is going to win the super bowl. let's go to something more scientific kind of. each year, redwood city tries to project the winner of the super bowl through madden football. >> and last year, they were about as wrong as can be. >> holy cow were they wrong. they they predicted the broncos. the broncos was so bad they
6:16 am
fumbled the ball on the first play. madden said it will be the patriots who win this year. there's going to be a squeaker. seattle will lead at the half, the patriots, they win 28-24. when madden is right, it's very right. let me take you back two years ago, in the 49ers versus the ravens. this is a man gave ahead of time and predicts there would be only one interception in the whole game. it will be in every pick of the kaepernick pass. and it would change the entire outcome of the game. and you know what, that's exactly what happened. in real life. it's hard to predict what marissa mayer will do today. all eyes on the ahead of yahoo!. she's going to explain how the company's going to handle that enormous windfall from yahoo!'s investment from alibaba. can they structure the deal to
6:17 am
avoid huge american profits. investors own the company, why shouldn't they get it but then again, it's meyer's job and yahoo! is getting bigger and better, she'd like to keep it and reinvest it. does it mean she pays too much in taxes? let's be frank here, investors are going to try to get her fired. so this is a very serious day for yahoo! and marissa mayer. >> she's making a bunch of money to make the right choice. >> she's well paid to make the right choice and i'm quite concern it will be the right move for yahoo!. back now to the story right now. much of the east coast getting smothered with heavy snow and strong winds. this is out of portland maine. this is not nearly as structure as forecasters predicted.
6:18 am
right now, you can see the front of the storm heading towards maine. 7,000 flights nationwide impacted. that includes 90 into and out of sfl. and the wind is the major story this morning, christina has been talking about that and light showers as we take a live look outside to the bay bridge. things looking fairly calm, christina. >> you know what, it's california and we have some rain. we in the midst of a drought. so, yeah, they have their problems, we have ours over here as well. 6:18 now. we almost broke a record in san francisco without any rain so far this month. if we didn't get any rain today, and i think we are going to, it would have been 150 years since that was the case no rain in san francisco in the month of january. so that's basically as far back as our records go. so what's coming through right now we need. that's one of those records you
6:19 am
do not want to break. now, wind is pretty strong. this will likely impact you in combination with the showers coming through for your morning drive. give yourself extra time. especially waking up with us. you live in san jose, santa cruz, the winds 26 miles per hour. up to 40 miles per hour from time to time. in combination with the showers which are organizing a little bit more at this point. we've seen pretty wet weather all the way from gilroy to san jose. mostly south of 92 for the time being. as we head throughout the day, the showers will slowly but surely work their way out to san francisco. we're not expecting a lot. enough to break what would have been seen as a record. that looks good for us. san francisco, this is all it's going to take, 0.02 inch for today. that is likely, santa rosa getting 10.01 inch.
6:20 am
and san jose overall in not looking too bad for us. take what we can get and a better chance as we head through the night and tomorrow morning. 60s to start. upper 60s at that. about 10 degrees above average on the peninsula. 68 degrees. 69 for the south bay. taking you into the rest of the week. and if you're starting to think about that weekend, temperatures will be nice and mild for saturday into sunday. we'll tell you what's going on around here this weekend. maybe you don't want to go to the super bowl parties. i don't know why, you're going to find that super bowl right here on nbc bay area. but it's also one of those days you can get out and about without any crowds. we'll tell you what else is going on in the next report. first, let's check out the drive with mike inouye super anchor traffic. >> i'm not going to the game either. two local teams right here, in south bay, we're looking at northbound 101, this team, of course, heading to work without
6:21 am
any delays, nothing unusual. and then look at your map, we're talking about the compression that typically happens at north 101 and 680 including bit time you get to the airport. farther south between gill rroyd hollist hollister. and then the other direction because of the overturned vehicle still blocking the eastbound lanes and a big issue as it has been all morning. this is casa de fruta. and 101 north, that's critical for traveling towards i-5, take 25 to 156. a couple of service streets through the area as well. an issue for you if you're traveling there. meanwhile, the rest of your day looks standard as far as your flow of traffic. to the peninsula side, john daly boulevard. as you see from the map, no slowing on the peninsula side.
6:22 am
typical for hayward, and the trivalley as well. we're going to zoo in on 580 westbound. and all the way past keller avenue for that crash. meanwhile over here at the coliseum, let me show you the live camera. we had a stalled vehicle on the shoulder approaching high street that has cleared up. all the way up to 880 through downtown to the bay toll plaza. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. 6:22 now. san jose stepping up its fight against wild pigs. we'll show you what the plan is next.
6:23 am
6:24 am
6:25 am
>> announcer: you're watching "today in the bay." welcome back. san jose city council will be voting this evening on a law that would help fed up residents deal with wild pigs. the pigs tear up people's lawn digging for grubs. in 2013, the city council passed a similar law allowing trappers to trap and kill hogs. that law will expire next week. the council is going to vote on whether or not to make that same measure permit. parents of 30 babies of almeida county were told to keep their children at home. the allegheny county public health department told the parents to keep the infants at home to avoid further start of

6:29 am
obviously a backup right here over my shoulder. getting there is a problem for some folks in oakland and getting out of the area for folks heading south.
6:30 am
could be a rough start to the business day on wall street. we've got variable goods numbers disappointed here on the opening on the nyse. and over on the nasdaq as well. folks were able to make it in through the blizzard as business gets under way. no rough start here as we take a live look outside here from the san bernard mountains, checking out the bay area, we may have a speckle or two. january 27th, this is "today in the bay." >> announcer: from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." and a very good tuesday morning, thank you for joining us, i'm sam brock. >> and i'm kris sanchez today when you hit the road, someone can be watching you. a new report said the federal government is quietly building up a database to track
6:31 am
drivers nationwide. tracie potts joining us from washington. tracie, tracking? >> reporter: exactly, it comes from interviews and government reports that the aclu picked up through a freedom of information act request. they get this information from the government. bottom line, when you're driving on the nation's roads and highways, the government may be tracking in realtime your license plate and then storing that information. at least up to two years. now, they're doing it up to 33 months, according to this report. started out seven years ago as a way to track criminals who are bringing drugs across the border. now, it's being used in connection with local and state police departments. according to this report, to track other types of criminals to help with amber alerts, with missing children. the government says it is all legal. but the aclu and some lawmakers on capitol hill question that. the top democrat on the

6:36 am
but what we got was really bad trading. the dow industrials are down 300 points. 1.7% there. you see. what's the cause? the durable goods orders. the airport orders much lower than expected. durable goods are anything you hold on to. refrigerators are a classic example of a durable goods. and it's spoofed the markets down 300 points. and we talked about the demise of the sky mall on airlines. you did the math, one of the catalogs weighs four ounces, that's 37 pounds worth of catalogs on a 737. extend that out fleetwide, that's a lot of weight. getting rid of the magazines should save american airlines about $350,000 in a year in fuel. go figure. >> so will my flight get cheaper? >> no. >> added space would be nice with all of those magazines,
