plaza. >> good morning. nice to have you along, tuesday morning, 7:00 a.m. on the west coast. still happening out here on the west coast. look at plymouth, massachusetts. snow still coming down hard. >> even from 3,000 miles away on the west coast you can hear the sigh of relief though from people in the new york city area because we really got lucky with this storm. though as you say, the same cannot be said for the people to the east of us and to the north. >> that's right. we want to get to the latest on the storm. states of emergency declared in eight states from pennsylvania all of the way up to maine. but as the system is moving north now, many of those travel restrictions that were put in place are being lifted. >> how do you think air travel is doing? it's one of the biggest impacts of this storm. the backlog of canceled flights just keeps growing. more than 5,000 already today. >> in massachusetts, the national guard activated 500 members overnight to help clear roadways, operate shelters, as well. and nbc's dylan dreyer is in the middle of it driving around boggs on the and looking at what is going on there right now. good morning to you.

>> reporter: good morning, savannah. i worked in boston for six years. this is about as powerful as the storm i've ever seen hit the city itself. now, we are in the comfort and the warmth of the blue mobile named after the -- and we have equipped it now with several cameras to give you all different views so that we can be out in the snow and you can stay warm at your home. so let's take a look at the camera out front of the blue mobile here. you can see that we have this blowing, drifting, heavy snow. it reduces visibility very quickly. we've been in and out of whiteout conditions all morning long. all night long the snow was heavy to the.where we have seen snowfall totals records. in massachusetts we've picked up 25 inches of snow. their all-time record is 32.1. so we are closing in on that. and the snow is still falling. we've also had wind gusts up near 80 miles per hour in nantucket and there has been coastal flooding prompting some

evacuations for some areas along the coast with the high tide. the worst part about this is the fact this is going to last all day long. the blizzard of 2015 begins with more than 35 million people in its path, from maryland to maine. the monster storm is bringing life to a relative standstill. the snow is being measured in feet, not inches. not as bad as predicted in new york. the storm saving its hardest punch for new england. with blizzard warnings up across the 250-mile swath of the northeast, authorities exercised caution. commuter railroads were shut down, along with new york city's subways and buses. new jersey's governor urged people to stay off the roads. >> let's get humpgerred down, go through the storm. you know, we're tough in this state. we've been through plenty of things before. >> reporter: while new york's travel ban for drivers could mean a $300 fine for violators. at the airports, nearly 7,000

flights were canceled. the only thing flying, food off the shelves as shoppers mobbed the supermarkets to stock up on supplies. >> people just like fight for things. it was crazy. >> reporter: new york city's mayor asked residents to check on neighbors in need. >> you don't know if you're the one to save someone's life because you took the time to check on them. >> reporter: a dangerous job of boston has crews cut power lines to prevent coastal flooding fires. people shared their experiences during the storm from the frustrating to the fun, using social media. as the hours pass and snow keeps falling, advice from a man who has seen his share of storms. >> stay in the house. get out of the snow. let the snow people do their thing. >> reporter: now, obviously i i am inside the truck but i want to show you the outside of the blue mobile. we are a roving satellite truck which means we can transmit a signal to you while we drive along the roads. but that's why we're kind of a

little bit away from downtown because sometimes the buildings will mess up the signal. we're in south boston. looking out the front of the blue meebl here you can see that we do have the cross winds coming over this bridge and we will be dealing with whiteout conditions although the heaviest of the snow has tapered off for now. but that's not to say it's not going to fill back in as we continue through this storm. but again, we are here in the blue mobile and we will give you a full tour showing you the capacity of what this thing does coming up at 7:30. >> thank you so much. >> i like that guy's advice, let the snow people do their job. air travel in this region pretty much to a halt. more than 7700 flights in all in and out of the northeast have been canceled. the ripple effect from that is reaching across the country. nbc's tom costello is at laguardia airport here in new york. tom, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. good morning, west coast. when was the last time you ever saw a new york airport look like this? laguardia airport completely empty. no flight operations today at laguardia.

no flight operations at newark. none at jfk, at philly, at boston. the truth of the matter is not much is moving today in the northeast. on the ground at what are normally bustling east airports, largely deserted. at jfk airport hundreds of passengers stranded after being stuck on the ramp on the plane for hours. among them, alexis dehasse. >> we then got ushered back into the area, in the terminal, and just left really to our own devices. >> reporter: thousands of flights in the northeast canceled, from pittsburgh -- >> i would rather be in the south. >> reporter: -- to newark where gina was trying to get to germany. >> airlines canceled all of our flights. i rebooked with united however i'm having issues checking in. >> reporter: laguardia's airport was a ghost town by dinner time. concourses locked up. so many cancelations not a single person here trying to check in. with a third of the nation's air

traffic transiting through new york airspace, the delays and cancelations have been rippling across the country. in los angeles we found kevin donaldson trying to get back to new york. >> i got about an hour's sleep last night between looking at the internet, searching for flight, looking for cancelations. just trying to get out of here. >> reporter: no dice. take a look at this incredible time-lapse of air traffic over the eastern u.s. monday. thinning out over the day, then virtually empty as night fell. the storm even shut down much of amtrak service. the northeast corridor this morning is closed down. while on the roads and snowplows are trying to stay ahead of the storm. the message the same from pennsylvania to maine. >> i can't stress this part enough, please stay off the roads. >> reporter: this morning a huge section of the country is quite simply frozen in place. so if you're on the west coast and you're having to travel today and you may think, this isn't going to effect me, may be.

chicago is effected, atlanta is effected, dallas, houston, all of these major hub airports that feed into the east coast, if they have planes out of position, you can see how this ripples across the entire system. >> tom costello, thanks very much. let's turn to al and get the latest on all of it. >> in fact, the no mail delivery in connecticut, rhode island, or massachusetts today. so with that old saying, neither rain nor snow, but we do have hurricane warnings -- i should say blizzard warnings in effect for long island up into new england, right along the coast. those will continue for the next 18 hours. this storm system, as you can see on the radar, really getting itself together. we've got officially 7.8 inches of snow at central park. we did find two feet of snow in new york city. sorry. >> well-done. >> thank you very much. tweeted that #blizzard2015. system moves up.

snowfall rates one to two inches this morning. whiteout conditions. coastal flooding will continue. afternoon and evening hour, more heavy snow for eastern maine tonight. subzero windchills. snowfall amounts generally, again, from north of boston into eastern maine. about another 9 to 12 inches on top of this. but for the most part, all in all, it's not the worst in the world. you know what? the reason we didn't get heavy snow here, the storm system really set up about 90 miles east of where we thought it would. had it been a little bit closer we would be talk a much different story. >> we'll take it. we'll take it, al. thank you. the new england patriots got out of boston. they beat the storm arriving in arizona for super bowl xlix last night. and there are some new twists in the deflategate scandal. new report on who handled the patriots footballs before the afc championship game. and then a powerful statement from the team's owner. nbc national correspondent peter

alexander is in glendale where it is media day. peter, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. the stage is now set. officially five days to the greatest football show on earth. just as soon as the patriots landed here yesterday their owner robert kraft came out swinging saying he was disappointed in how the nfl has handleded deflategate. and, again, proclaimed his team's innocence. patriots owner robert kraft turned the table on the in fact if this demand, if his team is cleared of any wrong doing. >> i would expect and hope that the league would apologize to our entire team and, in particular, coach belichick and tom brady, for what they have had to endure this past week. >> reporter: the patriots arrived in phoenix monday focused on claiming their first super bowl ring in ten years. >> my attention is focused on seattle seahawks. >> reporter: the deflategate controversy that's followed them for a week took a new twist. with a report claiming the nfl has zeroed in on a team locker room attendant whose already

been interviewed by the league. fox sports report surveillance video shows that attendant taking footballs from the official's locker room after they were inspected into another room at gillette stadium before bringing them out on the field. nbc news has not independently confirmed the report. but almost immediately the league's independent investigator broke his silence responding that no one should draw any cop collusions about the sequence of interviews. indicating the investigation is preceding expeditiously but will take at least several more weeks. one major step still to come, interviewing patriots quarterback tom brid difficultady. this week brady said the nfl wouldn't interview him until after the super bowl. >> we worked hard to this point. you know, this is no time to, you know, slow down. >> reporter: the questions he's already answered like during last week's wide-reaching news conference have had an affect on the three-time super bowl champion. >> i personalized a lot of things and thought this was all about me and my feelings got hurt. and then i moved past it and

because it's not serving me. >> reporter: how's this for another distraction. seahawks fans might consider this an open menman. the fire alarm fired overnight. the good news is no fire, nobody hurt, but it woke up a ton of them. the hotel says, matt, it was simply an anomaly. >> we'll take them at their word, peter. thank you very much. >> rename it alarmgate or something like that. turn to natalie. news of an alleged spy ring in new york. >> it's bizarre. the fbi says it has broken up a russian spy ring right here in new york city. one suspect who worked as a banker was in court on monday. the other two are diplomats who have now left the country. prosecutors say all three gathered economic intelligence and tried to even recruit u.s. residence of russian origin to work with them. the investigation started after the 2010 arrest of female russian spy anna chapman and her colleagues. the owner of that small drone that landed in a white house tree early monday is cooperating with the secret service.

the incident led to a security alert and a lockdown. president and mrs. obama were in india but their daughters were home at the time. the drone operator said he lost track of the device while testing it in bad weather. when he saw a report on the news he called the secret service. officials said it did not pose a threat. president obama meanwhile was in saudi arabia today to pay his respects to the royal family following the death of king abdullah. he was greeted by the country's new leader. the president wrapped up his three-day visit to india with a speech touting the importance of religious tolerance. isis fighters have been pushed out of the strategic syrian town of kobani. international observers say kurdish forces have retaken the town which is near the turkish border. however, the pentagon warns the four-month battle is not over yet. u.s.-led forces have carried out almost daily air strike on islamic state positions around the town. merely five months after the

death of joan rivers ss her daughters has filed a lawsuit. tamron? >> that is correct, melissa rivers is going after the clinic where her mother suffered brain damage during what was supposed to be a routine surgery. and she calls her decision to take legal action one of the most difficult she's ever had to make. on monday melissa rivers filed a multi-million dollar wrongful death lawsuit against doctors and the manhattan clinic where her mother suffered brain damage after a routine throat procedure. in a statement melissa rivers says, in part, the level of medical mismanagement, incompetency, disrespect and outrageous behavior is shocking and frankly almost incomprehensible. it outlined missteps that the clinic contends led to the death of the comedian. among the allegation, one of the doctors involved had no right to perform any medical procedures or render any medical services to rivers. another physician, according to the suit, took photos of rivers while under sedation, announcing

that maybe rivers will like to see these in the recovery area. and that doctor called a code blue around 9:28 a.m., but that it wasn't until 9:40 a.m. that someone called 911, some 12 minutes later. >> in most malpractice cases you will find that it is a sequence of events that causes this tragic result. it's not one isolated thing. >> reporter: one of the family's lawyers told the "new york daily news" had the doctors acted as physicians for joan rivers instead of groupies, joan rivers would have been doing "fashion police" last week. in her statement, melissa rivers went on to say, it is my goal to make sure that this kind of horrific medical treatment never happens to begin again. >> we reached out to the clinic for a response to the suit but our calls were not returned. natalie? >> thank you, tamron. now to a story that is sure to make you thirsty or maybe not. some oregon brewers making beer from sewer water. more than a dozen local home brewers are doing to take part

a smash and grab robbery earlier in san francisco. thieveses targeted the wells fargo museum. the thieveses smashed through the windows and made off with the small gold nuggets that were part of a gold mining display. a security guard was on deputy but was not hurt. a man is credited with helping to safely evacuate people out of a complex in san jose. firefighters say the man had just gotten off work and notices

flamed in the carport. he went up and knocked on all the doors and alerted people inside. the east coast blizzard is having a ripple effect in the bay area when it comes to travel. 85 flights have been cancelled into and out of the airport. mostly because of airport closures in new york newark philadelphia and boston. if you're headed out, here's meteorologist chris seen thattinea loren. so happy to see that rain there. >> so happy there. out of sierra nevada that's about it 7,000 feet that's the snow level where it will stay. for those waking up this morning, 62 degrees on the peninsula, you're waking up with 63 degrees in san francisco. you do have to keep in mind with the shower activity in combination with gusty winds out there, we're still going to hit temperatures close to 70 degrees later on tonight. and through the week temperatures stay nice and mild. more on that in a moment.

7:30 in the morning on the west coast on a tuesday, january 27th, 2015. it's also 60 degrees, a little cloudy in los angeles. while here in the northeast it's a mess. this is the scene in portland, maine, right now. the blizzard expected to dump about another foot of snow there. >> storm is the top story this morning. new york city faired the worse but it's been raging on northeast of us all morning. especially massachusetts, more than two feet of snow in worcester and it is not over yet. >> let's talk about what else is happening. owner of the new england patriots is going on offense when it comes to deflategate speaking at the opening super bowl news conference last night,

robert kraft said the nfl will owe his staff an apology if its investigation does not uncover any wrong doing. and facebook and instagram suffered a massive outage overnight affecting tens of millions of customers in the u.s., australia, and asia. lasted 40 minutes. facebook says it was not the result of a third party attack. matt mentioned the super bowl and you are going to head to phoenix on friday for "today" but, san va that, you have a big role in the pre-game show. you have a lot of homework to do. >> a lot of special teams plays. no, i'm going to sit down with president obama live during the preshow on nbc. this is a traditional sunday super bowl interview. we'll get his take on the game and other issues and, of course, we will air the larger part of that interview on "today" monday morning. look forward to that. >> that would be fun. he's a big football fan. >> i'd wonder who he's going for. let's begin this half hour with the latest on the blizzard.

dylan dreyer is four hours to our northeast. she's in the city of boston. dylan, good morning again. >> reporter: good morning shs matt. i decided to stand outside through this blizzard for a little while. this is the blue mobile we've been traveling in. here's why. in this dome here protected from the elements is a satellite dish. we've got that beaming up to a satellite straight ahead, so we've got a straight line shot to get connection with that satellite so we can broadcast everything about this storm to you. but once we get in it, it is completely equipped with all kinds of different cameras so we can give you a shot from all different angles. now here we are in the truck and we can start moving at this point because the satellite dish is on a rotator and we can just continue to stay linked up with that satellite. now, here's obviously the camera inside so i can talk to you. we've got one on the front of the vehicle and that one shows you what's like from a driving perspective. we have been in and out of whiteout conditions all throughout the night and all this morning. we're in a bit of a lull right now but that's not to mention

the fact that we have the wind that is still gusting up near 40 miles per hour. we also have a roof camera so you can see around us, as well. this one also indicating that we've got some rough coastal waters in this area. we've had a storm surge of three feet along the east coast of massachusetts. i also have a camera over my shoulder here. i've been using this one to obviously watch the latest radar. we've got more snow that's moving right back into the boston area. i've been watching this so we can make sure we're in the right location at the right time. and really this whole thing is designed so that we can be out in the elements and you don't have to be. we can show you what is happening. and again, looking out front you can see that there are a couple of vehicles moving through, a couple of people even walking on the bridge here. but for the most part this city is shut down because they know things will get bad before they get better. matt and savannah? >> dylan, thanks very much. >> as dylan mentioned, the snow is not the only concern. high winds, coastal flooding causing problems as well. the weather channel's mike

seidel is in plymouth, mass, and seeing a lot of that. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. down here on the coast it's been a wild morning. we've had evacuations just up the coast. all the coastal communities have had serious beach erosion, major coastal flooding. and to go along with that, look at the snowdrifts. three to four foot deep here. i've been walking through them all morning. the reason we have the big drifts is because we've had winds gusting for 50 miles an hour now paebeaking at over 70 miles an hour. at high tide this morning around 4:30, it came through the harbor and filled up this entire front yard of the restaurant. this is all under water and you can see how the water came around the d u.k. nune of snow. the winds are gusting over 50 miles an hour. you can probably hear it. look at the waves. next high tide is this evening. late this afternoon, early this evening. we're going to have some more

coastal overwash and some more storm surge and more issues. and right now we've got about 44,000 customers without power, matt. that includes all of nantucket island. back to you. >> mike, thank you very much. nbc's john yang is just to mike's north and the cold and snow in portland, maine, is relentless. good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, forecasters say this is what it's going to look like in portland all day. steady snow into the night. this is a -- a little pedestrian greeting us here. now officially there are six inches fallen. but because of the wind blowing this snow it's very uneven. if i sink our very expensive scientific gauge here we've got about ten inches. this is sort of downwind. now let's go into the wind and we get here which hasn't been plowed and there's virtually nothing. this is a real havoc for people trying to clear the road and

drivers who are trying to get by suddenly finding drifts of snow covering the road. matt? >> john yang. john, thank you very much. makes travel a headache for a lot of people. what are we looking for today? >> we're going to continue to see this heavy snow in new england, eastern half of long island, as well. we're talking about more heavy snow, pushing its way through. again, the snowfall amounts that we've seen so far, ms. massachusetts, 29 inches. new york, almost 29 inches. worcester, mass, east port, 22. providence, rhode island, 12 inches of snow. wind gusts to 32 miles per hour. jfk, montauk, 36. nantucket, 64-mile-per-hour winds. you add in the windchills, islip, feels ss like four. as you can see, we're looking at additional snow from north of

boston on into parts of eastern maine. we are looking at anywhere from 9 to 12 inches of snow. and, in fact, as we look at the -- more of the snow we're going to see, again, during the afternoon, the windy conditions in the northeast, plenty of sunshine through the gulf coast. right on into florida. look for a few showers in the pacific north west and we're expecting rain in central 7:37. good morning to you. i'm meteorologist christina loren. showers pushing up and down the peninsula. you know what this is really light, but you might actually have to use your windshield wipers from time to time if you're heading up the peninsula. southbound 880 will be the trend for today. temperatures right now really mild. 62 degrees on the peninsula. the tri valley is at 63 what about 65 degrees later on. very light showers. mostly cloudy skies. the temperatures in the mid-60s.

japanese isis hostage claimed he has less than 24 hours to live. he also says that a captured jordanian pilot has even less time. he said they will both be killed unless jordan frees a would-be female suicide bomber arrested ten years ago. nbc news has not authenticated the reporting. now the latest on that drone which crashed at the white house early monday morning in the secret service now questioned the man who was flying it. nbc's kristen welker has the latest. >> reporter: just two feet long this drone became the latest intruder over the white house fence. leading to a lockdown and intense search. the drone's owner who came forward monday reportedly works for the federal government but this was no covert mission. instead, he said, he'd been flying the recreational drone in the middle of the night to see how it performed in bad weather. he found out. >> the drone lands on the white house grounds. >> reporter: but according to sources that, man didn't even know his drone had crashed at the white house until he heard

they went to southern georgia to meet a man about vying a vintage car. they did not return home and relatives reported them missing. 28-year-old ronny adrian and jay towns have been arrested in the case. frightening moments monday at city hall in new hope, minnesota. two police officers were shot and a suspect was killed just outside council chambers. >> the resolution authorizing the purchase of an electronic leader board sign. them american are here now remembering the more than one million people killed here most of them jews. this camp was liberated exactly 70 years ago today, but the survivors still are not free of their memories. there were no flowers here when auschwitz was a death camp. no heads of state came then. but they are here today to stand with the survivors. dozens of whom came from america. their pain is raw. most were here as teenagers. they return as old men. still astonished they survived. >> the fact that maybe we will survive to see the victory over evil. >> the spirit we have in us and the belief that some day we will go through this. >> they survived the horrors and the brutal winters of the death

camp. even after 70 years it's hard to grasp what happened here. many jews who arrived at this spot were gassed within an hour and burned. the ashes of more than a medical yon of them lie scattered all-around here. gina was inside the gas chamber at auschwitz, but it didn't work. >> i said no way. we are in a gas chamber. >> for most auschwitz was the end of the line which is where today's ceremony takes place. film director steven spielberg among the guests. but all eyes today are on the survivors. >> there close to 300 here but it is a dwindling group year by year. most of them are in their 90s. the message from here is strong indeed. we must keep alive the memory

how are you doing now? >> i think i reached those years that i have been warned about. it's really -- the rubber meets the road where it's eight against one. they are 10 and 14. the voices are loud and the opinions are loud. they band together against me and i just hope that the things that i have instilled in them that will come out the other side okay. >> a tough patch and you will get through it. >>. >> the teen years are nothing to laugh about. it's for real. the kids want what they want and have opinions yet at the same time i am okay with showing that. parents across america are saying yep, i'm there. yep, you have a couple more but i'm there and i'm doing it. the important lesson is to hold firm and put into them the good beliefs and morals and values that i have always stuck to. we will all be okay.

seven or eight minutes. you want the veggies to cook down and develop good color. color equals flavor and it's always free. color equals free flavor. >> when you think about it. >> you can add your spices. this is what i love. my favorite blends. i love doing good chili powder and a smoked chili. a little bit of brown sugar. this balances the tomatoes and everything together. the heat and cumin and a pinch of o reg no. give had to that a good stir. shimmy over to this side. >> i will shimmy right here. >> give that a stir and let it cook for a few minutes and let them develop their flavor. you you will add in tomato paste. not a lot. a couple of tea spoons. >> i'm not a huge baneean fan.

can you skip it? >> these are kidney beans and you can use black beans or chick pea s. whatever you want. bulk it up. then a little bit of red wine. you could use beer if you want. i always happen to have red wine on hand because i cook a lot of sauce. >> then once you let that cook out, you add in the beef stock and the diced tomatoes. juice and everything. this will simmer for hours. >> those are from a can? >> yeah. the beans went in. >> great. no chili for me. >> sorry about that. you let that cook for hours. you need good guac. >> a the love people don't like getting the pit out.

>> pick a good ripe beautiful avocado. you should be able to press it. it gives it a little dip to it. it shouldn't be hard. a lot of people do the knife method which terrifies me. i don't do that. i give it a gentle squeeze and take a teaspoon and pop it uh. scoop out the avocado. >> since we are running out of time talk about what we put in. >> cilantro, jalapenos. onions and a punch of salt. >> let's get instant gratification. >> of course. we have chili topped off with cheese sour cream, salsa. i like to serve it over rice but i have corn muffins over there that would do. then cakey brownies to top it off. >> the guacamole is so good.

. good morning. it is just a couple of minutes before 9:00. i'm kris sanchez. the family of a man who was shot and killed by san jose state university police has filed a civil lawsuit. 38-year-old antonio guzman died last february after investigators say he charged at two campus police officers with a 12-inch blade. officers hit him with a taser, but he kept moving the toward them and they opened up with

deadly force. the lawsuit claims the officers used comprehensive force. police have not responded to that lawsuit. at least 85 flights into and out of sfo have been canceled today because of the rough weather on the east coast. today's blizzard virtually shut down airports in new york newark, boston and philadelphia, so call ahead if you're traveling. more local news in a half hour.

not your first snow. >> just go with it. >> all right, let's talk about what's happening here al. here in new york city not as bad as we expected the streets are clear and traffic is moving and public transportation but this is a major storm. >> as you just go out about 50 miles east there are places that have gotten 26 inches or more. then you go to the north, coastal connecticut, rhode island, on into new england. parts of massachusetts and now maine really getting socked. so they are still states of emergency in effect for the new england states right now. they've got really hours to go before this is over for them. >> all right. >> we really didn't know what we were going to get. it was predicted to be massive. that's why the city took all of the precautions. >> and i think it was a good thing that they erred on the side of caution. they were able to clear the streets.

but you look worcester mass 25 and boston. we picked up almost 8 inches in central park. >> central park is even closed. i've never heard of that happening in eight years. >> during sandy. >> so it's one of these things where, you know the good news is for new england, we did know this was going to happen and for this area here it didn't quite live up to what we thought, but good news is nobody got hurt. >> i was hoping for a good old big snowstorm. >> i'm not buying that. here's why. earlier today i had on snow boots but miss natalie had on high heels and made me put on high heels. >> this is completely fine out here, plowed and salted. >> hoping for a good old snowstorm in 5-inch heels. >> on the weekend it's great to get plowed and salted.

alerting his neighbors inside. and that east coast blizzard is having a ripple effect here in the bay area when it comes to air travel. sfo says that at least 85 flights have been canceled into and out of the airport. mostly because of airport closures in newark new york philadelphia, and boston and of course, it will take days to recover. we have a look at our local weather and traffic coming up after the break.

probation. the man is sean harrington. he's accused of sending raese photos from women's cell phones to his personal device. prosecutors say he then forwarded those photos on to other officers. harrington resigned from the chp's dublin office last october after being charged. well we'll have a look at weather and traffic coming up after the break.
