being a record setting storm in parts of new england. to dylan dreyer, she's in marshfield about 30 miles south of boston along the coast. dylan, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, savannah and man, are we happy that's over. new england took it on the chin with this one with tropical storm force winds and feet of snow. in marshfield we saw the storm damage these homes and now in ice. as the atlantic ocean came crashing in and flooded these streets at high tide, all of the water now is frozen in place. the blizzard of 2015 is for the record books. under siege by the ocean, the storm surge punching out a 50-foot hole in the sea wall in marshfield, massachusetts, one of several communities at the mercy of the tide. >> it makes sense to get out and to a safe shelter. >> reporter: hard to find shelter on an island. nantucket battered by winds 80 miles per hour.

>> virtually everything we had has failed including as of right now our 911 is not working. it was stated by one individual we had to revert back to 1950 technology to stay in touch. >> reporter: people across new england call this blizzard wicked and not in a good way. snow everywhere, nearly 3 feet in places not counseleding the mounds created by plows. if a car won't get you there a snowmobile will do the job. the storm that slammed new england pummeled eastern long island. but the main punch of the storm only glajsed new york city and northern new jersey. the statue of liberty watched the blizzard come and go. some people felt the same. >> couldn't have been worse. we got off easy. >> reporter: a forecaster with the national weather service apologized tweeting he made a lot of tough decisions expecting us to get it right and we didn't. once again i'm sorry. a city shut down, businesses and

public transportation closed. add in the cost of snow removal one expert estimated $1 billion in losses across the northeast. but it's not all about dollars and cents. as the snow piled up, so did the images of the storm on social media, people sharing the amazing views from a romp in the snow on video to a moment of sheer joy frozen in time. these homes also frozen in time here in marshfield. yesterday, just about everything, ever where, was shut down. in crew hardy new england fashion we saw a dunkin' donuts truck making a delivery this morning and in this area that's always a good sign. >> they are running on dunkin. thank you so much. william pittman is the chief of police on nantucket. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> i guess the first question is how is it that you're able to talk to us? as i understand it power was cut off to much of the island. >> well, we're back on line,

we're back in the 21st century, i guess. >> and what is the situation there? how are folks dealing with it? it's a tiny island and bore the brunt of this storm. >> it's amazing how people do here. you know, everybody pitches in, everybody does something, they have got a plow on the truck they use it, if they have got a house that's warm they let the neighbors join them. you know, it does very well in a storm like this. this was a tough one, it was the worst i've seen in the ten years i lived here. >> i know you had to use the school as a shelter, the hospital lost power for a while. and i understand actually during the height of the storm there was a baby born. >> yes. actually i think there were four of them potentially going to be born. we were a little concerned about that because there's no way to get off island if something would have went wrong. >> and how are you doing today? now it's the cleanup begins, the sun comes out hopefully, you are able to assess the damage. are you getting what you need? how bad do you think this will

be? >> i think we're going to find a lot of damage on the erosion area on the east coast of the island and probably the south shore. down town i know we've got some structures that are having issues. the water was up to their foundations, so maybe even higher. our building commissioner is going to be down there at sun-up starting his inspection. food service establishments, grocery stores were without power for a long time, that's going to require the health department and those folks to make sure food is still safe. so we're not out of the woods yet but we're headed there. >> we're sending our best to you, chief, and all of the people of nantucket. thank you so much. >> thank you. >> we didn't have time to ask the chief to expun knowledge your record when you were 19 and a little incident. >> i wish you were kidding but you're not. it was not chief pittman who made the arrest. that's all behind us. let's turn the page, though, al. let's talk about some of the

forecasting. for the storm, obviously this storm took a turn no one predicted. >> we actually did see this in a sense coming, if you want, we actually said anywhere between 9 and 18 inches of snow. well, we ended up getting almost 10 inches at central park and 12 inches at laguardia airport. but, the bulk of it was on the island and as you moved up into new england. and the american model actually handled this better than the european model. so, nobody likes to be wrong, we didn't get three feet of snow in the city but i think we saw a lot of people make the right decision to shut things down and in fact, mayor de blasio is coming up to talk about it. >> what do you think of the meteorologists in the weather service apologizing? >> i think he felt a lot of pressure and nobody likes to be wrong, and i think he stepped up and said hey, we blew it. we're human and we're going to try to do better which we all feel in the weather business. >> thankfully many were safe in the storm.

>> that's the bottom line. >> obviously the airlines were scrambling now to deal with the backlog of canceled flights. more than 7700 over two days, tom costello back at laguardia airport. good morning. >> reporter: willie, the good news it's open. boston to philly, we've got 650 cancellations today alone, here at laguardia the cancellations are mostly on the departing flights, because the planes aren't here yet. system wide for the airlines this is really going to be a day of recovery. with the snow cleared out, the ramps and runways in new york back in business overnight. but inside the terminal, it was still dead quiet. cynthia spent the a second night on the cots anxious to get home to the bahamas. >> i doze off. don't sleep soundly by no stretch of the imagination. >> after a white-out as boston logan and digging out in the northeast the airlines say this morning they will be back in the air.

720,000 people ride the northeast corridor. guy, back to you. >> the bahamas sound pretty good right about now. thanks, tom. >> air travel, this is serious, a new round of threats against passenger planes under investigation. janet shanley is in los angeles and has the latest on this. good morning to you. >> savannah, 16 bomb threats against commercial planes in the last four days, and this is a new method of delivery authorities are having to deal with. all of them coming on twitter. this morning the fbi is investigating another round of online threats against airlines, all posted tuesday night. including one targeting delta flights. saying, the 4 planes will explode in 10 minutes. delta responded to the tweet, saying it considers all threats serious and planned to report the comments for further review and action. the now suspend accounts sent threats to delta, southwest and american airlines.

three of the targeted flights landed hours before the tweets were posted. two others landed shortly after, and another had yet to depart. all six arrived safely. it's just the latest in a series of online threats against airlines this week. five other flights made emergency landings over the weekend after similar threats were posted on twitter. two of the planes were headed to seattle. >> this is the first time i've been in a situation you had two aircraft fairly close in arrival time for them to be considered a security situation. >> another one of the threats prompted f-16 fighter jets to escort two planes to safety in atlanta. all those were later cleared of security concerns. and arrived safely at their destination. while security experts say the ip address of the twitter user can be tracked they do have to take each one of these seriously and respond accordingly. savannah, willie, back to you. >> thank you. >> the super bowl now four days away, a lot of the talk in

flew the drone is a government intelligence worker who told investigators he had been drinking before testing out the device at 3:00 a.m. on monday. sources say the man who lives near the white house wanted to see if the device could fly in bad weather. he lost control of the drone and it crashed into a tree on the south grounds, that sparked a shutdown and predawn search by the secret service. an employee with the national geosfashl intelligence agency he turned himself in. in a statement the nga said the employee was off duty and is not involved in work-related to drones or unmanned aerial vehicles in any capacity. the secret service is continuing its investigation. so far no charges have been filed. the man is back at work, those close to him tell me he is visibly shaken. >> kristinen welker, thank you. dramatic video of fresno, california firefighters saving three young children from an apartment fire. this happened sunday, all caught by helmet cameras.

you can see the firefighters going into the dark smoke-filled apartment and pulling the kids out one by one. thank goodness they are still in critical condition however. a ups driver is fired for a delivery that was anything but special. a surveillance camera capturing this as the driver walks up to the gate, it was locked so he tossed the package over the fence. the package broke open and hundreds of dollars of ammunition and equipment was damaged. it gets worse. then the ups driver unzips his pants and what do you think, he relieves himself. after the homeowner complained ups says the seasonal driver was relieved of his duty. >> okay. all right. >> wow. i didn't see the relieving himself part coming. >> doesn't get better than that. >> double whammy from that guy. wow. >> good luck following that.

on college campuses. two football players just convicted of rape. gape gutierrez has the story. >> this morning two university football players are in jail, bail revoked and lives changed forever. >> this case has given the community an opportunity to talk to each other and our children especially our boys about the way we treat women. >> after an emotional two-week trial, a jury took just three hours to convict brandon and cory of several counts of aggravated rape and battery. two others are awaiting trial and pleaded not guilty. they argued the young men were not guilty of rape but a college culture of binge drinking and sex led to the incident. >> i'm sorry. i never intended on hurting anyone. i was extremely intoxicated and i would like to extend a

was a higher incidents or an earlier period in girls that had the sugary drinks but not related to their bmi. we always think it's related to obesity. we're suggesting that the sugary drinks cause a spike in insulin which can start periods earlier. >> interesting. we should point out that american beverage association released a statement, neither the study nort body of science shows that sugar sweetened beverage consumption shows early on set of menarche. what is the advice as a doctor? >> i think this is more evidence that you are to limit the sugary drinks in children. we know that it's bad for obesity and teeth. it could be changing your body metabolically that could have long term consequences. important that we know that early periods are associated perhaps with an increased risk of breast cancer. that's why the study is so important. >> thank you so much. >> all right. now to a high speed chase with a twist. take a look at this video from a police cruiser's dashboard camera nearby pittsburgh.

8:26. i'm kris sanchez. happening now, the launch of new metering lights for one of the sauth bay's busiest traffic corridors. 85 between mountain view and cupertino. those lights switched on for the first time this morning. they have been on, but they turned red. they will return longer than any of the metering lights in the bay area. that's from 6:00 in the morning until 11:00 in the morning. they were launched last week for the southbound evening commute. this is to help provide some relief for one of the worst bottlenecks anywhere in the bay area. let's check with the man who knows a thing or two about bottlenecks. mike. >> it's very tough down there.
