you. i'm meteorologist christina loren. your day today just spectacular, mild and breezy, warmer weekend temperatures coming your way, followed by a really good looking storm system. i'm going to show you your futurecast, walk you through the changes, in just moments. and while we watch that commute just easing into many parts of the bay, we're focusing on the castro valley y right now. we have an update on the crash and what it means for westbound, your commute. and taking a live look outside, beautiful bay bridge. wow, the last thursday of january already. where is the time flying? it's the 29th of 2015. this is "today in the bay." and a very good thursday morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm sam brock. warning at deanza clnlg this morni college this morning. police are looking for a man who

attacked a female student on campus. kris sanchez is live in cupertino. what do police know about the incident at this hour? >> reporter: the campus is all quiet right now but social media was abuzz last night as students started to get that alert from their campus police about the fact that one of their fellow classmates had been groped and allegedly touched inappropria inappropriately. this is the notice that deanza college sent out to students, grabbed her, shoved her against the wall and attempted to touch her. she told police she was able to punch him and get away. the suspect fled to the north part of campus, the campus center. the victim told police the suspect said his name was alexander, she described him as latino or middle eastern, about 5'5" tall with short brown hair, bushy eyebrows and unshaven.

noteworthy he had a cut to his lip and a strong body odor. while the notice says that campus police were on duty last night, we can tell you they are not on duty this morning until 6:00 this morning. in the overnight hours here at deanza college the sheriff's department is the agency that responds to calls for help. we'll be here all morning long trying to get more details so if you are or your kids are headed off to camp thus morning you know what to expect. i suggest using the buddy system because at this hour, it is very dark. in cupertino, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> students on alert this morning, thank you very much. >> now to a develop story in san francisco this morning, where dozens of people are left homeless after a fire engulfs their apartment in the mission district of san francisco. the flames broke out more than ten hours ago at the intersection of mission and 22nd street. "today in the bay's" stephanie chuang joins us live in san francisco with the latest details. good morning.

>> hey, laura, good morning to you. i spoke with a firefighter about 10, 15 minutes ago as he was leaving, he had ashes all over his face and said he was right in it. i asked him how it's going now, he said it's going well checking there are no hot spots and flare-ups here. they just put up the ladder in the last minute, although we are told that the roof already collapsed so they're not able to attack any hot spots from that angle. at one point there were more than 100 firefighters. it businesses on the ground floor, people live in the top two floors of the building. one man died and six others injured. last night there were firefighters right on the scene, on the fire escape on the mission street side trying to help people down. at least six people were saved that way. crews were able to get inside the building and bring people out that way as well. the top floor is where flames were shooting out the third floor. witnesses said when firefighters put water on parts of the roof, debris goon foul.

fire chief joanne hayes white what is dangerous is how the fires take off in the attic space when the flames move quickly. >> we seen people rushing out their windows and jumping down the ladder and like, they're on every window, not even on the side of the fire, because the smoke started there, and then just went off to the right side, so they started coming down and the firefighters weren't even here yet. >> so a lot of chaos at that time. now chief hayes white says fire investigators will go into the building, but they've spoken with witnesses and it will probably take days to determine the cause and origin of the fire. dozens of people without homes this morning, the red cross taking care of them. the evacuation center and the shelter is at city college at this point. at last check there were about 50 people, 12 of them children. the red cross assuring it will be helping these people as it will be a long process for them to get back to any sort of home.

live in san francisco, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, steph. in the meantime, this is actually the second fire in the same area on mission street in just the last five months. flames also destroyed a three-story building back in september just down the block. firefighters had a tough time knocking that fire down. the building was filled with clothing and flammable items. the fire there actually burned so hot t weakened the building's steel beam supports. three people, including a firefighter, needed to be hospitalized just because of smoke inhalation. a former peninsula social worker accused of having sex with two underaged girls is expected back in court today. last october authorities arrested 38-year-old manuel cedio messer of santa clara. judge will decide whether there's enough evidence to try him. he's pleaded not guilty to multiple charges of sex with a juvenile. investigators say he had two

girls who were both clients of his at child protective services. prosecutors say he met one of the victims while working with her family and eventually started a lengthy sexual relationship with her. police need your help finding the people who last saw a north bay woman alive. take a look, maria behar is the woman with short, blond hair. she was found dying on a road november 15th, just hours after surveillance cameras took this video. police say the two men at her side are actually considered persons of interest. the three were last seen together at casa del mar restaurant in santa rosa. she was found the next way highway 29 north of calistoga. police say she was the victim of a hit-and-run. the family of a dublin girl who vanished some 26 years old is holding a candlelight march for her in her honor this evening. 13-year-old eileen misheloff

disappeared walking home from middle school in 1989. they'll follow the path she took while she was abducted. dublin police are still working on the case. there is a $95,000 reward. >> hard to believe it's been that long. angry students and parents plan to rally and protest against the relocation of a south bay charter school. san jose's downtown college prep is a charter school that serves mostly low-income students. san jose unified is planning to move it to another location several miles away. the new campus is only about one-fourth the size, school administrators say. the district is being forced to move a number of facilities due to expiring leases and limited bond money. san francisco police need help finding a puppy who was snatched from a muni bus. this is chester, a 4-month-old pit bull. witnesses say last week a man punched chester's owner on a muni bus and grabbed the backpack which had chester inside of it. police released surveillance images of the suspected thief,

wearing a black baseball cap and black vest over a gray sweatshirt. one of the lower things you can do. meteorologist christina loren, there's people who love pets in the bay area. >> sure do, i have three at home my little loved ones. can't get enough of the fellas and one dog named money, she came at honey bun from the shelter and didn't live up to that name. we had to change it promptly. this morning, temperatures are running cooler yesterday to the tune of 7 degrees in half moon bay. we're at 45 degrees in oakland. 45 in san jose and 39 degrees in san martin. heading outdoors this thursday should be easy for you this morning. we have fog creeping through the delta. that's about it. areas of morning fog, whatever does develop will burn off quickly. we are on our way to another gorgeous day, not a spare the air day. air quality in the good to moderate range.

highs mid to upper 60s with plentiful sunshine all day long. the fog will return this evening, but we're not going to see much of it. however, onshore flow for us means temperatures are going to be a little bit cooler at the coast, as we head throughout the next couple day answer we have a chance for some rain starting on sunday night, with a much better chance as we head into the latter portion of next week. wait until i show you your futurecast. something that we haven't seen for quite some time. i'll bring that into my next report. 67 degrees for today, enjoy that while it lasts on the south bay. 66 on the peninsula and 65 degrees in san francisco. let's check in with mike inouye, see how that drive is shaping up friday eve. >> good morning t is friday eve and we're looking at the freeways overall moving smoothly into and through san francisco but those familiar or not familiar with the city, the city has a number of different districts, talking about the mission district where surface street will be an issue over here for mission coming through the mission district right here between 0th and 23rd, still closed because of the deadly

fire where stephanie chuang just finished giving her report there. the cleanup continues. live look shows you crews on scene, the giant ladder extended in the last couple of minutes as steph was reporting. there's a sketchers and pop eye's restaurant, that will affect traffic and muni 14 and 49 continuing reroute on to van ness from last night through this morning. back out to the maps as we talked about, the freeways are showing normal traffic flow for 101, and 19 through zumida park. castro valley y, west 580 at 238 earlier crash cleared and the little slowing cleared in time for the morning commute to come through. the rest of your bay as we take a wide look all the way down the peninsula, the south bay and even over in the very much a very smooth drive, just a little slowing out of the altamont. north bay no problems as you'd expect, guys. back to you. >> mike, thank you very much. we're always trying to

figure out ways to alleviate congestion in the bay area. tonight commuters will be able to weigh in on big changes for a major traffic bottleneck. caltransplans to turn carpool lanes into expressway toll lanes between hagan berger and dixon landing and hayward. the lanes would aloe solo drivers to use the lanes for commuters for a fee. today's meeting is at 5:00. a meeting with police in st. louis turned violent. why a white castle in las vegas had to shut down hours after it opened. another losing day on wall street and we'll look at why the mcdonald's' ceo decided to spend more time with his family, coming up in business.

welcome back, everyone. 5:14, the new white castle restaurant on the las vegas strip is back open after closing briefly to give employees a breather. 24-hour burger joint was forced to close for a two-hour break as staff cleaned and just reset everything. it comes after record-shattering first day sales at the only white castle restaurant in the west. white castle reps say they moved

4,000 flighters an hour in the first 12 hours they opened. 35 people on the floor every shift. >> can't keep up with demand for the white castle. on the other side of the spectrum, mcdonald's problem too few customers. >> the ceo is out, mcdonald's, sam, announced donald thompson would step down, only ceo for a short time. the restaurant saw falling food sales. his replacement is british, formerly the head of mcdonald's efforts in the uk. now he's very well versed in automation. you've seen this in some american restaurants. mcdonald's has been pouring money into this in europe. it's a huge cost savings for the company because tablets don't need health insurance or sick days or training or uniforms. interesting numbers come out of sam sung this morning, a day after apple said those new big iriphones helped our sales,

samsung said the opposite, our sales have gone down. it didn't say because now apple sells an enormous phone just like hours but that's pretty much what they meant. let's turn to landon dowdy live at cnbc world headquarters. good morning, landon. >> hey, scott, good morning to you. stock futures are pointing to a mixed open on wall street today, after the markets fell for a second straight day on wednesday. energy and tech were the big drags, despite apple's blockbuster earnings report. oil prices slumping to their lowest levels since march of 2009. investigators taking notice of the fed which wrapped up a two-day meeting saying it will still be patient in deciding when to start raising interest rates. day ta on unemployment and housing, the dow dropping 1 5 points to 17,197 and the nasdaq falling 43 to 4637. back over to you, scott. there's a new documentary online about the first software engineer which as many people in silicon valley already know was

a woman. grace hopper, later u.s. navy admiral grace hopper invented the first computer language compiler and credited with popularizing the word "debugged" to mean removing a problem from the computer. the film is free to watch online, google "the queen of code." the problem she debugged which was a moth, now in the smithsonian. >> that is the origin of the phrase of debugging. >> yes. engineers have used the word bug before. she said let's debug and literally took a moth out of a computer. >> and our lexicon is forever different as a result. two more big storms headed for new england, as people try to dig out from the historic blizzard. national weather service says the first storm will hit the east coast late today but tomorrow night. the storm is expected to drop four inches of snow on connecticut, rhode island and massachusetts. another storm follows close

snowfall coming our way. it looks like as we head into next week and just in time for next weekend. temperatures mostly in the 40s and 50s. it's a little foggy right at the immediate coast of san francisco, breezy later today, that's going to help to clear all that fog. you're going to see the sunshine even in the city for today. 68 degrees is the forecasted high in the north bay, the peninsula today at 66 degrees and here we go, friday, temperatures staying steady, a little bit more sunshine coming your way as we get into this weekend. temperatures will be just lovely for your outdoor plans and then monday you see we bring in that rain icon. let me show you your futurecast. we take it to monday at 11:00 p.m., when we have the best chance for shower activity but i think between about 11:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. light activity especially up in sonoma county south to san francisco. we're not going to see much in the south bay until we get into friday, saturday and even sunday, take a look at this, something that we have not seen in quite some time, a return of that rich moisture, so we need a good looking system like this to

help produce maybe a half of an inch to an inch of rain on the valley floor and could look at a foot of snow, maybe two feet if this hans panz out. into sa9íay night getting heavier moisture and by sunday it starts to clear out. there's a big event happening on monday, phil. you might know him as punxsutawney phil. we think9zwñ he'll see his shad z  inouye, six more weeks of winter. we like when it pops out in a tuxedo and the thermometer says shadow likely. >> i'm impressed with the philometer we have there. i didn't realize we added that to our arsenal. i'm jealous yet again. over here full or emptyometer, the gas tank, for some of the cars 580 westbound. we have a lot to pick from. we'll look at your map for the

into a pushing and shoving match. it's a touchy topic. more than 100 police officers and protesters showed up to the meeting. the city's first public hearing on a plan to create a civilian review board for police. the board would hear complaints about police actions, review evidence from internal affairs investigations and evaluate police policies. >> what citizens want in the wake of what we've seen in st. louis in the last few months is a new level of accountability. >> it's guilty until proven innocent, plain and simple. who wants to be the next darren wilson hung in effigy in the town square because of defending his life? >> so much emotion understandably wrapped up in this issue. several more meetings will take place before a final vote on the proposed board. the seattle top club getting national attention, we'll tell you about it next. we knew t

or would be soon. today may mark the beginning or the end for candlestick park. spokesperson for the developer he will lenar says the process will start when the heavy machinery arrives, and that could be today. the process is expected to last about two months. the site will be turned into a mixed use development that will include an outlet mall. >> look at all the chairs. the world series trophy tour continues today with a stop in hayward. all three giants trophies of 2010, 2012 and 2014 will be on display at hayward city hall starting at 4:00. joints fans can view the trophies, take pictures with them. the tour will end in april on opening day at at&t park. excited for that. >> we still have a full season to enjoy that championship before the world series. >> we will savor it.

up. >> all right, mike, thank you very much. clear look outside right now of the bay bridge, no fog or rain is going to rain on our parade, with the weekend right around the corner. it is thursday, january the 29th and you are watching "today in the bay." and a very good thursday. thank you very much for joining us. i'm sam brock. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. we continue to follow developing news out of san francisco. more than 50 people trying to figure out what to do next after their home was destroyed by massive fire. it broke out almost 11 hours ago at the intersection of mission and 22nd streets. the remains of the building are still smoldering this morning. "today in the bay's" stephanie chuang is live in san francisco. what are you hearing now? firefighters still out there watching the hot spots? >> reporter: they are out here. good morning to you, laura. i just spoke with the battalion chief who said crews are monitoring hot spots at this

point, but the fire is contained to the building. you can see there are still some engines out here, an ambulance and a ladder up to the roof there. at one point there were more than 100 firefighters, but it has calmed down a lot since then. people live on the top two floors of that building there at mission and 22nd. businesses on the ground floor, one man dying in this fire, at least six injured including one firefighters who suffered exhaustion but we're told by the choo ef that chief he's doing w. the main priority was to save lives last night. they got six people off the fire escapes and another half dozen out from inside the building. the top floor is where the flames were shooting out and so the some point witnesses say water would hit the top of the building and debris would begin to fall. chief hayes white said it was dangerous because it took off into the attic space and still the area of focus this morning. >> there's a partial roof collapse. the integrity of the building is in question. there's areas of the building we

don't want to go into that's unsafe but we still have to get into the fire to put it out. >> the thing about fire that's dangerous, it ask did take off into the attic space, when the third alarm when i got on scene and we decided to go for a fourth alarm. we have over 100 firefighters working at this fire. >> reporter: chief white says, hayes white says fire investigators were on scene last night and they'll be here this morning and they will go into the building when it is deemed safe. they've already talked to witnesses but it will likely take some days at the least to determine the exact cause and origin of this fire but again the integrity of the building very questionable so we don't know what investigators will actually be able to go inside. what we do know is mission street along between 20th and 23rd still closed and the chief saying the battalion chief saying that will likely remain the case through 8:00 this morning. live in san francisco, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> sadly the fire displaced more than 50 residents. many of them spending the rough night at a nearby evacuation center. the red cross set up the center

inside city college building about a block away from the fire. spokesman says at least 12 of those left homeless are children. volunteers now trying to meet the needs of those who really lost everything in this fire. >> some people lost medications for chronic illnesses in the fire and need them right away. make sure that's taken care of and right now we're working to assess who needs a place to stay tonight and just take care of the short term needs right now. >> things to think of. the red cross may open a longer term shelter for fire victims similar to the kinds for natural disasters. crisis counselor also provide additional assistance. stephanie chuang will be at the scene all morning long and when we're not on the air, you can always head to our website, nbcbayarea.com. with college campus sexual salt very much an issue right now, police at deanza college are foki ilooking for a man who

attacked a female student on campus. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us live from cupertino. what do investigators know at this hour? >> reporter: they know what the victim told them. that was enough to send out a campus-wide alert to other students last night telling them that one of their classmates had been groped and almost sexually assaulted here on campus. the college sent out a notice to their students last night after a female student reported to police that a man grabbed her and shoved her against the wall, attempting to kiss her and touch her. she told police she punched the man and was able to get away. this was on the south side of campus last night, before 11:00 near the planetarium. the suspect fled to the north part of the campus, that would be the campus center. the victim told police the suspect told her that his name was alexander. she described him as either latino for middle eastern, about 5'5" tall with short brown hair, bushy eyebrows and an unshaven face but perhaps most notewory the victim had a cut to his lip and a strong body odor.

while the notice is ais that all campus police were on duty last night, they're not on the job this morning until 6:00. in the overnight showers the santa clara county sheriff's department responds to calls for help. we're trying get more details. a lot of students come to school here and a lot of students show up to study before classes start, which is after daybreak. we'll try to get more information for you and we will also look at some of the other statistics for incidents similar to this one in past years. in cupertino, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thank you, appreciate that. a shoplifting heist turned into an armed robbery when a store employee tried to stop two men stealing video game consoles. surveillance camera caught the robbery at frye's electronics in palo alto. the two men grabbed consoles off the shelf and ran for the exit. the first suspect made it outside, but an employee tried to block the second suspect from

getting away. that's when the man pulled a xwn out gun out of his waistband and pointed it before getting outside. both men are on the loose. christina busted out super bowl forecast a second ago and got us in the heat mood. good morning. >> good morning to you. ♪ da, da, da, da, da 46 in san close and 45 in san jose we're excited about it. you know who is more excited than us, our very own bob redell, why, because he's there. we'll get updates from him i believe as of tomorrow. i'll check with our producer extrordinaire dan. we'll have more in moments. we know it's going to be a lot of excitement right here on nbc bay area. we get to host that super bowl this year, and if you're like me, you're just tuning in for the xhecommercials, watch out f one featuring sam brock. he gets some super bowl time.

that's you, sam brock and that's big business. mid to high 60s for today, plenty of sunshine, you got to love a humble man. fog returns this evening. your sun will set at 5:30. maybe you're somebody who likes to get out there and throw that football around during halftime. spectacular conditions for that this year. 68 degrees in the tri valley today, 65 in san francisco. you take these numbers, you add a good two to three degrees and that is where we're headed for your super bowl sunday. so here we go. 70 degrees is the forecasted high in santa clara. you're going to be at 73 degrees, in glendale, arizona, so temperatures will be very, very comfortable here and there, and 66 degrees in san francisco. so still running about five to ten degrees above average. super bowl parties are a good time. people spend a lot of time outdoors. last three years we had showers so better conditions for this year.

we should see the metering lights turned on in the next two to four minutes. investigators say airasia flight 8501 was under the control of the first officer, not the captain, when it crashed in the ja is asea last month. indonesia's transportation safety committee reveals the copilot was monitoring the plane while the captain monitored the controls. the captain is believed to have tried to take over the control of the plane as it started its descent. 162 people died in the crash. >> very tragic. 5:3 right now. 66 students at a southern california high school have been told to stay home for now because they may have been exposed to the measles. here's what's going on here, happening at a school in palm desert. girl was sent home earlier this week with a suspected case of the measles prompting a round of vaccination checks. the 66 students who were not, who were sent home have not been vaccinated. the measles outbreak that originated at disneyland has

utilities commission state agents searched the house of michael peavy, the former puc president.
