i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm sam brock. developing at this hour, fire crews in san francisco finally have the upper hand on a massive foo irthat broke out in the city's mission district. the flames so intense some people broke through windows to escape. dozens are left wonders what they'll do now. >> "today in the bay's" stephanie chuang has been at the scene all morning long. things are finally starting to calm down? >> reporter: absolutely, things very calm compared to last night, at one point more than 100 firefighters and engines everywhere. now just one ladder truck here. the battalion chief says crews, keeping an eye out on hot spots to make sure nothing flares up. firefighters were able to save six people on the fire escapes, one man died in the fire and he was on the top floor. firefighters gave him cpr and took him to the hospital but he did not survive. people live on the top two floors here and businesses on

the ground floor. rescue squad was able to bring another half dozen people safely but the inside of the building. the flames shot into the attic space. >> got up into the attic space, started running the attic space and difficult to chase. once it got up in there, it weakened the roof and partial collapse of the roof happened. >> witnesses said when water hit the roof some parts of the building began to foul. chief hayes white says they will go into the building when it's safe. it will likely take days to determine the exact cause and origin. crews are looking at this from overhead. one firefighter who was hurt, he from exhaustion we're told is doing well. the american red cross is helping those who have lost their homes, at last check talking about at least 50 people, a dozen of them

children, the red cross saying it will do what it can to help people before they're able to find a home once again. live in san francisco, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> nice to see the red cross stepping in and helping out. we'll continue to follow the story all morning long. stephanie will join us again in about 40 minutes. when we're not on air, visit our website, nbcbayarea.com where you can find more raw video of the fire as well as photos submitted from our viewers. 6:03. police in san francisco are trying to find out whose body parts were found inside a suitcase on a busy street. reports of a suspicious package in the south of market area yesterday afternoon. it was sitting in a pile of trash between market and mission street. investigators found more human body parts a few blocks away. police don't know if the dismembered human remains belong to the same person or if there are multiple victims.

investigators have a lead on the suspect description but not releasing it as they try to track down that person. students at a south bay college on high alert this morning after a woman said she had to attafight an attacker on campus. >> reporter: classes don't start for another hour but we've seen students and employees streaming in to campus, many likely already knowing about the attempted sexual assault and groping last night. the university sent out an alert to its students saying that a student reported to police a man grabbed her, shoved her against the wall, attempting to kiss her and touch her inappropriately. she managed to punch the suspect and was able to get away. that's the good news. this was on the south side of the campus near the planetarium and the suspect fled to the north part of campus, the campus center. the suspect told her her name

was alexander. she described him as latino, middle eastern, 5'5" tall, short blond hair, bushy eyebrows. the victim says that he has a cut to his lip and a strong body odor. while the notice says all campus police were on duty, they just returned to duty at 6:00 this morning and in between in the overnight hours santa clara county sheriff's department responds to calls for help so the students are not unprotected overnight. we are still working the story here trying to get more information from the college, deanza college. we have calls out to several people including police and trying to see if we can gather anything else you might need to know if you're headed to class at deanza college or headed to work because the sun is not coming up for at least another hour or so. until then i suggest using the

little more moisture our way in the south bay, where it has been so dry. temperatures are going to be really lovely later on today. for your outdoor plans and we have good to moderate air quality all across the board. 66 degrees on the peninsula today. 68 degrees in the tri valley and wine country looking good, not just today but all the way throughout the upcoming weekend with the warming trend coming your way and i want to show you what's on the way for next week, it looks like we're going to pick up some measurable precipitation and totals that we haven't seen in quite some time. take a look at ukiah, just under an inch expected between late friday and early saturday with more on the way late saturday into sunday. so we're really hoping that the system pans out. i'll give you the timing for it coming up in my next report. if you have time, get out the front door right now, hold up maybe one more minute, mike can help you out. >> good morning. things are moving smoothly around the bay as you might expect. there is a major issue for a portion of san francisco. let's get you oriented for folks

not well familiar with the city, divided into a number of districts here, mission district is where we're focusing in the middle of your screen, where there's the deadly overnight fire where steph chuang showed you the live pictures. crews are on the scene blocking a portion of mission between 20th and 23rd for the crews there and that is a major thorough fare building up right about now so van ness or valencia are your alternate routes par tloel mission street and affects muni lines 14 and 49. they'll have stops on van ness between 14th and 2th, until hopefully 8:00 a.m. when they think they're going to clear those folks from the scene but we'll track that as well as the impact on the local community. lot of folks displaced and unfortunately some lost their lives. over here the rest of your bay, i zoomed out to a wide shot, there's nothing that unusual about the flow of traffic. slowing hayward 880 and tri valley on the right as we look at your live shot for the bay bridge toll plaza, one of your usual suspects we have the metering lights on as usual. fast track lanes are moving well that's a bonus coming off of the

"newsweek" this morning. >> scott mcgrew it's all about silicon valley and doesn't paint a good picture. zbl >> it's not xlim tear at all. what silicon valley thinks of women. it shows you some of the controversies that we already know from gerbasha hall accused of attacking his girlfriend and sexual harassment. it shows a drawn woman with the skirt up in the back with an arrow pulling the irrelevant ask up and it says, "what silicon valley thinks of women." the problems started in small san francisco startups. high-tech companies generally have a better reputation. intel promised $300 million to make its workforce more diverse. apple slightly less diverse. facebook one of the better.

mark zuckerberg coming under fire to adhere to laws in turkey. it comes weeks after zuckerberg took to a digital soap box to support "charlie hebdo." "this is what we all need to reject, a group of extremists trying to silence the voices and opinions of everyone else around the world. i won't let that happen on facebook," he wrote. "i'm committed to building a service where you can speak freely without fear of silence, je suis charlie" except that's not what facebook did. protests in turkey. he acknowledges that facebook has to follow a country's laws but different laws in different countries have caused all kinds of trouble for silicon valley. for instance ebay has to be careful with historical items not to veigh lit german law. google had to remove links to news articles in europe that are actually true under europe's right to be forgotten laws but the companies don't cave in

alpine meadows making that snow whenever they can, overnight lows are cold enough for the snow to be made. i can tell you right now, 33 inches at the base is better than last year. we're doing all right and there's four inches of new snow courtesy of the system that rolled through earlier this week. so as we head throughout the morning, see truckie is at 21 degrees. you're at 41 in sacramento and 39 degrees to start in ukiah. whenever the temperature is below freezing mark they can make the snow. the drier it is the fluffier the powder they're able to make. looking okay up there. great news if you want to head to ta show, you have not been able to so far because of the meager snowfall that we've seen, courtesy of mother nature. i got to tell you we have a great looking system on the way just in time for next weekend. here are your weather headlines today. mild and breezy conditions, just love conditions and this breeze will build as we head throughout the afternoon. warmer weekend coming your way just in time for your super bowl festivities and showers, in fact

we're going to change that to rain. rain returns next week because it is looking really, really good for that. 67 degrees in the south bay. 66 degrees on the peninsula today, and 68 degrees in the beautiful tri valley, where the hills are still green, courtesy of the ample rainfall we accumulated in the month of december. now as we get into this weekend, take a look at where we're headed, san jose up to 70 degrees. 69 on sunday and on monday it's going to be mild out there, but we got some light showers coming your way, as promised. here is your futurecast. if you're not around your television set right now, come on over. come join us for a minute. this is something we haven't been able to show you in quite some time. i take you into late thursday into friday of next week, bulls eye right over the bay area, a good looking storm, and yes, i think we could pick up maybe one to two inches in the higher elevations, if everything pans out. that's rainfall that usually equates to one to two feet of fresh powder in tahoe. the warm system above 7,000 feet

go, getting their stops at van ness, one of the alternates to mission street and valencia street is an alternate for drivers through the area as well. hopefully the whole scene will be cleared by 8:00 but steph is up there giving you the updates of what happened and what's happening as far as frog there. as we zoom out to the north bay, the rest of the fog creeping from the coast and highway 101 and santa rosa, affecting some folks but not a big deal. the commute looks the same, know slowing through the novato narrows. upper east shore, highway 4, tri valley at the bottom of your screen, a typical pattern. 580 moves slowly off the castro valley y. as we look to the south bay typical pattern as well for our speed sensors through the area. we talked about the san mateo bridge coming off the castro valley y and see a volume of traffic starting to increase a bit. little haze in the air but visibility is fine tracking that to the peninsula, more traffic 92 and 101.

66 students at a southern california high school have been told to stay home for now because they may have been exposed to measles. >> all this happening at a school in palm desert, a girl was sent home earlier this week with a suspected case of the measles prompting a round of vaccination checks. the 66 students who were sent home have not been vaccinated. >> the measles outbreak that originated in disneyland has now grown to 95 cases. 79 of those infections are in california. 52 can be directly linked to

disneyland. most of those infected with the disease were mott vaccinated. >> here's one question that's popped up, what if your child cannot get vaccinated? one bay area family is asking their son's school to ban kids who haven't been vaccinated against measles because their own son can't get the shot. >> 6-year-old receipt couitt has leukemia. his immune system isn't even strong enough to get the measles vaccination. so to protect him his parents want everyone else to get the shots. but california allows parents to claim a personal belief exemption. rhett's parents say that law should berepealed. >> we're hoping there's a person or organization, maybe a politician who see this is and says this is something that we can do something about. >> the superintendent of the read union school district says he cannot prevent unvaccinated students from going to school unless there's a localized

but to take the threats seriously. >> no we about that, laura, sam. good morning. when people are on board and someone tweets a threat to a specific airline and a specific flight number, authorities have to divert that plane, get everyone off, get all the bags off, go through them, even if they think it's a hoax and that has happened 20 times since saturday. it includes as you said some flights in and out of sfo, and at least one that we know that was leaving san jose, four bay area flights out of the 20 affected so far. now the fbi is trying to figure out who is behind this. so working with twitter, they suspended the accounts for now but trying to figure out who the people are behind the accounts. the investigation is under way. some of the tweets were very specific, not just to airline and flight number but with messages like we planted explosives, we are isis, we are here as in here on the plane. at least one person saw that while they were sitting on the plane. you can imagine how

disconcerting that is. the feds think it may be pranks. however t is a federal crime, that means five years behind bars, up to five years behind bars and a quarter million-dollar fine. >> you have enough anxiety as it is when you're flying. hopefully we'll find out who is responsible. 6:32, following breaking news this morning, a gas tank truck exploded outside of a maternity and children's hospital in mexico city. according to a mexican television network at least 54 people are hurt, 22 of them children. no reports of death so far. the explosion sent a smoke billowing over mexico city. we'll bring you more details as soon as we get them. we'll take a quick look back home and see what's going on outside this morning. 6:32 on your thursday. the golden gate bridge relatively good looking traffic flow there. you can actually see the bridge which is always nice. people are excited. we have a big weekend in store. >> we're being spoiled with

they'll be expecting, glendale, arizona, 73 degrees for them. we're talking about 70 in santa clara, and 66 degrees in san francisco. now you might be wondering why i'm so excited about the warm temperatures. i have to tell you, there's a lot of rain on the way. latest futurecast model projects an inch and a half in san jose. i'll show you the numbers and give you the time line for the upcoming storm system we're tracking in my next report if you can stick around. if not, here's mike inouye and your morning drive. >> first folks out to san francisco, where steph chuang has been talking about overnight deadly fire off of mission street, this is impacting your commute as well as ride through the area. the ladder extended for the building and the number of veengz vehicles in the middle of the roadway. they closed mission street until possibly 10:00 a.m. for the continued cleanup and make sure the hot spots are put out.

new this morning, investigators in malaysia declared the presumed crash of flight 370 an accident. on the way from kuala lumpur to beijing. no wreckage has been found. declaring it an accident allows families of the victims to move forward with compensation claims. the 239 people on board that flight are all presumed to be dead. >> new details now, investigators now say airasia flight 8501 was under control of the first officer, not the captain, when it crashed into the java sea last month. end nearby's transportation safety committee reveals the copilot was flying the plane while the captain monitored the controls. just before the crash the plane did a sudden and extreme climb causing the jets to stall. the captain tried to take over control of the plane as it started its descent. 162 people died in the crash.

this spookd a lot of people locally. u.s. navy trying to figure out exactly why a fighter jet made an unscheduled and loud flyover here in the bay area. >> it was on a uteen training mission the superhornet fighter jet through by the golden gate bridge and brkly hills before headed back to the air station in central valley. some feared it would crash into buildings. when online news site hosted the story a grad student wrote "the jet's pilot" was his brother, the flyover was a way to say good-bye before moving to texas. some thought the stunt was cool, others are upset. >> a lot of people were scared by it. they don't know what it was. it's completely inappropriate to be using public resources to be doing something like that, when the danger could be so great. >> in a statement the naval air force said "while training missions in the local area are common and the pilot was under

positive faa control, the u.s. navy is investigating the flight to ensure the aviator complied with all faa and u.s. navy regulations." 6:42 and coming up an update to a developing story 12 hours later and crews still on the scene of that massive and deadly fire in san francisco's mission district. plus the student at a south bay college says she was violently assaulted on campus. how she managed to fend off her attacker. first a live look outside right now, and christina said it is going to be a nice day, leading into the weekend. we are back with 15 minutes of nonstop news, traffic and weather, right after this break.

"today in the bay's" stephanie chuangtnov hask been there the e time on scene this morning. things finally starting to calm down a little bit out there. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, sam and laura. it's calmed down a lot apparently. the last ambulance we could see left the scene about 20 minutes ago and just now within the last minute the last ladder truck has gone down so looks like a lot of progress has been made very different from last night when there were more than 100 firefighters here, engines everywhere. the battalion chief says crews are keeping an eye on the hot spots. the fire seems to have started on the third floor. one man died in the fire and he was on that top floor. we've also learned independent

news mission had its offs on the second floor. the staff is okay. people on the second floor. the ground floor is businesses. a rescue squad was able to get more than a half dozen people safely from inside the building. the chief says crew also remain on scene for at least another hour or two. >> it's a difficult fire. it still is. it's not out until all the hot spots are done and we feel the building is safe, the integrity of the building is safe before we leave. we'll stay here. >> reporter: the tricky part of the fire when flames spouted into the attic. investigators will go into the building when it's safe but it may take days to determine the exact cause and origin. six injured all together. the injuries were mostly burns and smoke inhalation and

totals that they're projecting. they're going beyond what i would normally associate with this system. i'm going to show that to you as promised. 45 degrees in san jose. good morning to you. as the new day begins, we've got good air quality to moderate, all across the board, and yes, we have a little bit of fog developing throughout your inland valley spots. look at this, clear, beautiful shot of the bay bridge. areas of morning fog, you'll find that through the delta. we have a little bit developing in san jose as well at this point, building ocean breeze later on, so you have the fog and ocean breeze, indication of onshore flow back in the bay area. that means it's not going to be as dry out there as it has been. here is the deal. mid to high 60s yet again today, plenty of sunshine coming your way this afternoon, and then that fog will return this evening. it's going to roll in more heavily tonight. 5:30 the sun goes down. it's unusual to have high this is warm with our days as short as they are in the wintertime.

68 degrees in the tri valley. 66 degrees on the peninsula and there's some of the fog we were talking about. we'll get an update on that and the rest of your drive with mike in just moments. first let me take you into your weekend and then i'm going to show you what i promised, that storm system. so 70 degrees for saturday in san jose, 69 degrees on saturday in san francisco. if you can get out there, just lovely conditions. 69 degrees for sunday, and 66 in san francisco. so we're in the upper 60s in the south bay for your super bowl sunday, and 66 degrees not a bad day at all in san francisco. if you want to get out there, throw that football around, during halftime. here we go, first round of rain moves in, monday at 6:00. this one looks light. watch this, i take you into the end of the week into next weekend, and we have a really good looking storm system and at this point, our computer models are not only bringing in heavy rainfall amounts, they're actually starting to agree and yes, we continue to see that trend, i'm feeling more confident about this forecast. so i stop that clock for you

sunday at 8:00 a.m., the moisture still coming through. let me give you an idea of the preliminary projections from some of our models. let that tally run, look at this. maybe an inch and a half possible right here in san jose, over an inch and a half in palo alto and same for san francisco, looking good for the north bay to receive some ample rainfall out of the system with more on the heels, we've got another one brewing towards the middle of february. so the further you go out, the less confidence we have in some of the forecast models but this system looks good. i'm really liking what i'm seeing as we get into the next seven days. we're going to keep you updated. i'm watching that like a hawk just like mike is watching your drive. let's check in with him right now. good morning. >> good morning, christina. we had trouble seeing 280 at 17 in san jose. this shot is 101 at 680, where we see a slower drive and we can see the clouds in the sky, we can see the road and the sky. let's show you the map of the two shots in comparison. there's christina's shot and my

shot downtown san jose. you see how difficult her job is with the microclimates affecting the view. the traffic though not so tough to call. you know you'll have the slower drive, capitol expressway and 068 where 101 slows, 85, 87 and 280 your typical south bay and silicon valley build. typical thursday pattern. the tri valley through dublin and pleasanton and sunol for the build, same 880 out of hayward and fremont a little bit of building up and fog around the san mateo bridge. farther north the bay bridge toll plaza and in san francisco as you get off the bridge, looking to the mission district where stephanie talked about the fire. the cleanup continues why mission street is still closed. the fire watt 2nd and mission. roadway is closed between 21st and 23rd. muni 14, 14l, x and 49 taking ail reroute until they have that cleared, possibly before 8:00

and local traffic takes valencia for van ness. 101 slowing at union but before you get there there was a traffic fray going on. i'll check again, nothing was reported through san rafael. hopefully that is cleared. little fog north of novato and santa rosa. we'll stay in san francisco where police in the city trying to figure out whose body parts were inside of a suitcase on a busy street. police responded to a reports of a suspicious package in the south of market area yesterday afternoon. they found the suitcase sitting on a pile of trash between market and mission. few hours later investigators found more human body parts a few blocks away. police do not know if they belong to the same person. there were multiple victims. investigators are not releasing the description of the suspect as they try to track that person down. a woman says she was attacked aggressively on a local

college campus. >> it's quite a scare there. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez joining us from deanza college in cupertino. good morning. >> reporter: the students did get an alert and classes don't start for another half hour, students and employees are starting to stream in and may feel apprehensive about walking on campus before sunup given the alert they got last night regarding the attempted sexual assault and groping. the groping of a fellow student who police say told them that a man grabbed her and shoved her against the wall attempting to kiss her and touch her. the good news is she punched the man and was able to get away, on the south side of campus near the planetarium. the suspect fled toward the north part of the campus, the campus center. the victim told police the suspect told her his name was alexander. she described him as latino or middle eastern, about 5'5" tall with short blond hair, bushy eyebrows and unshaven.

the victim says he has a cut to his lip and a strong body odor. campus police returned to duty about an hour ago and overnight the santa clara county sheriff did respond, was able to respond to calls for help but there were none. i am awaiting calls back from the college and campus police. in the meantime, if you are a student here at deanza college or your kids go to school her, advise them to use the buddy system because the sun is not coming up until after 7:20 so still not broad daylight. in cube tina, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> we hear this about kind of thing far too often. thank you very much. this morning police will install radar warning signs along a san jose street where a jogger was killed by alleged street racers earlier this week. last night friends and family of kyran pan la honored her with a candlelight vigil. the 24-year-old died monday after she was hit by two cars believed to have been racing

down the road less than a mile from her home. about 100 people showed up to light candles, share pictures and memories. >> every moment we spent with her was a moment of joy and we cheished every minute of it. >> she was like everything. >> police say the two men charged in the alleged road race, manuel maldonato avalos and esparza didn't even know each other. ma maldonato avalos appeared in court and police expected him to get out of bail overnight. esparza is already out on bail. those men are expected back in court in march. to a surprise development in the cozy relationship between pg&e and california's public utilities commission. state agents reportedly searched the house of former puc president michael peavy. "the chronicle" reporting investigators seized computers and other devices from peavy's house. he had stepped down last month. they were in search of evidence

of judge shopping, bribery and obstruction of justice. agents also searched the orinda house of a former utility vice president tied to the scandal. e-mails released last year show the puc and utility were secretly consulting about critical pg&e decisions which is not allowed. a rocket launch plans for this morning will not light up the skies after all. >> it doesn't necessarily take much, something as simple as wind. >> it was high level winds apparently, high level upper atmosphere stuff, it's been rescheduled. the delta two rocket supposed to carry soil measuring satellites into orbit. all i can show you is this a rocket doing absolutely nothing. this is more exciting, spacex released a new animation showing how its rockets are supposed to come back down to earth so be reused. spacex tried this once in real life, this is real life video, how it actually worked out. no, not so much. there's a new documentary online

this morning about the first software engineer which many people in silicon valley know was a woman. grace hopper later u.s. navy admiral grace hopper invented the first computer language compiler and is credited with popularizing the word debug to mean removing a problem from a computer. this film is free to watch online, google "the queen of code." the problem she debugged was an actual bug, a moth, which is now in the smithsonian, the moth is in the smithsonian. >> that's why they call it debugging? >> that's why they call it debugging, removing the bug. >> the most historic bug of all-time. >> i think it is. san francisco crews keeping an eye out for hot spots in a burned out building near the intersection of mission and 22nd street. the fire started just before 7:00 last night and swept through three stories, a three-story building killing one person, six others were injured. the red cross is helping 51

people who have no place to stay. the family of a dublin girl who vanished some 26 years ago today is holding a candlelight march in her honor tonight. 13-year-old eye lin micheloff disappeared walking home from wells middle school in 1989. police are still working on the case. today may mark the beginning of the end of cappedle stick park. the dpoefler lenar says the demolition process will start once the equipment and heavy machinery arrive. lenar plans to take the stadium down piece by piece in a process expected to last about two months. they have all the seats kind of, you know, stacked there. >> sad. one chapter ending there, a new one starting here locally. we have of course levi's stadium, the super bowl next year and still a super bowl this year, too. we're getting excited about, dips and what not. what are you looking forward to? >> wings. i like to go big on super bowl sunday. and i mean big plate of food. 6:58 now. if you want to get out there,
