6:00 am
local leaders are doing in arizona, trying to get ready for next year's game, already dubbed super bowl san francisco bay area. and they're getting a little bit of precipitation out there. it's going to clear just in time for the game. i'll show you that forecast, get it to your futurecast in moments. for us, morning fog, afternoon sun, warm weekend ten tours into the 70s in many spots and significant rainfall totals next week. i'll give you the time line in moments. >> and the crowd grows this traffic friday, looking at a smooth flow but a lot of folks for the tri valley, unusual slowing for the san leandro area. we'll show you what's going on for 880. >> all right, crowds on 880, crowds at the super bowl, downtown san jose. it is friday january the 30th. this is "today in the bay."
6:01 am
good morning, thanks for joining us i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia-cannon, she is still battling a cold. >> i'm sam brock. we are two days away from super bowl . >> shhh ershhh, they're still s. >> the patriots and seahawks are going to battle it inside the university of phoenix stadium. >> the stadium is in glendale, which is ten miles away from phoenix. the fans are enjoying the rest of the super bowl experience. rob redell right smack dab in the middle of it all. bob, what is the mood out there this morning? seems a bit early. >> well it is. it's an hour ahead of you guys but still a party out here. you've got a nice little contingent of fans out here, patriots and seahawks fans, trying to get their mugs on the background of the "today" show which has been broadcasting from super bowl central, this is a 12
6:02 am
block fan zone downtown here. you look to the right and how large this is, 12 blocks, interaction for people to do down here and coming out here in spite of the rain and cloudy weather. are there 49ers fans out here? yes, there are plenty. lot wearing their 49ers jerseys which are easily mistaken for the arizona cardinal colors but very hard to find any who are actually still from the bay area. shouldn't be a big surprise. we did bump into elaine perez of concord. we caught her yesterday inside the nfl experience. she's a die hard 49ers fan, so confident in her team she booked the trip to phoenix many moons ago thinking the 49ers would make it to the super bowl so she showed up here. >> you feel like you're part of it, even though your team is not on the field on sunday you're
6:03 am
still one foot in the door. >> reporter: does it hurt the seahawks will be on the field sunday? >> it's excruciatinexcruciating. there's pain. it's like searing. i'm hoping that brady can pull it off and i don't have to see sherman smirking this year. >> reporter: she tells us the 49ers, if they made it, she would have spent whatever she had to. the most she'll get is spending her $500. i checked on stubhub the nosebleeds, the worst seats in the stadium are starting at roughly around $7,500. yesterday on our flight down here i was sitting next to a nice cuple from seattle, seahawks fans showing up without tickets. the most they want to spend is $1,500. you you got a lot of people bringing a significant amount of money but not enough to get in the game. $7,500. even though the 49ers and the raiders aren't in the game,
6:04 am
there's still a bay area connection. the seahawks marshawn lynch and richard sherman went to cal and stanford respectively. pete carroll born in sf, went to school in large spur and the patriots quarterback tom brady from san mateo on the peninsula. we're here at super bowl 49, connected to super bowl 50 the milestone and of course hosted there in the bay area back home at levi stadium. the super bowl host committee is in up to. we'll tell you what they hope to glean from their visit in phoenix coming up within 50 minutes. >> we are willing to spend at least $97 to get into that football game. i'm saving my money now. >> he talked about darren vorell of espn says few tickets were below $10,000, only 20 tickets
6:05 am
left below $20,000. >> later today nfl commissioner roger goodell will be expected to address many of the issues clouding the league all season long including of course domestic violence. much more on his state of the nfl address coming up at 6:30. in other news, while anticipation is growing ahead of the super bowl, so is the anxiety in part of the measles outbreak at disknowland which spread to arizona. >> officials say they're not overly concerned that thousands of visitors in town for the super bowl will get measles but it is airborne and also a highly contagious thing. at least 98 cases have been reported in the outbreak linked to disneyland. >> as we talked from disneyland it takes one. from measles to ebola this morning, health officials not far from the bay area, anxiously waiting to hear if a patient in. >> just walked into a local
6:06 am
hospita hospital. "today in the bay's" damian trujillo, researchers are planning a big role in fighting ebola. >> reporter: it's a $50 million donation by the bill gates foundation, big donation. the idea is to hopefully develop a vaccine to fight ebola and other viruses around the world. as for the northwestern sacramento it comes at a time when the patient in sack men stow being tested for the ebola virus. the person is at the uc davis medical center, where he was taken after walking into mercy hospital with ebola symptoms. the patient is considered low risk and is in isolation at this hour, and doctors wait for the test results, those results might come back as early as this morning. in the meantime, the er at mercy hospital was sealed shut yesterday. the california nurse's association has been in touch with the nurses on the front line in sacramento and it appears all protocols are being followed to keep everyone safe. >> we know that obviously
6:07 am
testing has been done. i know that at least the initial test something done and itest something done and it's not unusual for a second confirmation test to be done as well. >> reporter: here at stanford the gates' donation will be used to establish the zahn ford human systems immunology center, the hope is to learn more about the immune system and perhaps develop vaccines for ebola and other viruses. this center will be run by stanford dr. mark davis, also a biology professor and a professor of immunology. live at stanford, i'm damian trujillo, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, damian. today police may release surveillance pictures of the man who they think dumped a suitcase filled with human body parts. police found that human suitcase in san francisco a block from
6:08 am
twitter headquarters. other body ports were found scattered nearby. police don't know if there's one victim or multiple victims. new video of rap mogul sug knight turning himself in to l.a. county sheriffs a few hours ago. the death row records founder is charged with murder after a deadly hit and run accident yesterday. his attorney says knight ran over and killed a friend while he was trying to get away from attackers. his bail is set at $2 million. in the meantime yes you have pushed your way through the entire week. it is friday, a live look outside at downtown san jose right now, traffic not too bad for the time being and oh, yes, they have quite a few event to look forward to this weekend, nice weather. >> i would say. meteorologist christina loren says there is rain in the forecast, very good news but it's going to hold until we get us through the super bowl. >> one more weekend to make those plans outdoors and really, a good looking super bowl sunday coming your way. this morning, temperatures are
6:09 am
starting out relatively mild. mostly in the 40s and 50s. we have 49 degrees on the peninsula. 51 degrees in san francisco and up to 72 degrees later on today in the north bay, where we're starting out in the upper 30s so definitely one of those mornings where you want to get out there and enjoy it, if you can, maybe go for a run, go for a bike ride, where it's really mild. do grab that jacket up in the north bay. i want to show you something that looks rather ominous. glendale is about ten miles to the south of phoenix and right now we're getting some very robust moisture through the area. bob redell reported a brief heavy downpour this morning. pretty light but watch what happens just in time for super bowl sunday, that morning at 6:00 a.m. all that shower activity clears out and stays nice and clear for the kickoff of that game, 3:30 right here on nbc bay area. they'll hit 71 degrees out there, close to that here in santa clara. at 70 degrees and 66 degrees on the way to san francisco. here is that rain kris was
6:10 am
talking about. we really need it and it's going to start to push in as of next weekend. some of the preliminary estimates bring in inches of rainfall in parts of the bay area, two of our competing futurecast models showing us very different forecasts though. we're going to dive into the science of that coming up in my next report. maybe you like some science and not going to watch the super bowl. it's exploratorium free day. groundhog day is on monday but in celebration of groundhog day they're going to have free entry to the exploratory yum on sunday, 61 degrees by noon and 62 degrees at 3:00 and if you're like me this is a cool place to check out, science, mike, we love it, over to you. >> speaking of science you have your forecast models and it sounds like they have their own super bowl battle going on. we'll see how things sort out in the forecast, looking over toward the roadways, we'll show you the big issue. the wide view of the entire bay nothing unusual for friday aside from this. i'll zoom in to san leandro and
6:11 am
we're showing a slow drive really kicking in north from 238 up to marina boulevard where we still have the left lane blocked by cleanup work from an overnight crash. chp tells us they're waiting for someone to help with the heavier barrels as a result of the crash. still blocking the left lane, hoping a 7:00 a.m. reopening. we'll track that, some slowing developed on the map. as we zoom back out anywhere north of the san mateo bridge, we're talking about the 508 altamont mild slowing. fog novato, santa rosa, the same as the last couple of days. no problems san rafael with a live look here where we register the fringe area for the orange blob in the north bay, that's the reading that translates from our weather data. here a smooth drive. to the south bay we have more of an issue for lower visibility starting to clear up now. low clouds are drifting around,
6:12 am
101 even 280 a problem earlier but that's working out as well. >> i like to when you use technical terms. >> blob and snow. >> thank you very much. 6:11 now. robbery suspect points a revolver at an employee's face before running wauf video game consoles. we have a new sketch police want to you look at. a high-tech company uses a clever technique for a secret. we'll tell you what it is in a moment.
6:13 am
6:14 am
here's a look at today's top stories. sug knight booked on murder charges. this in connection with a deadly hit-and-run in southern california. this is new video you're seeing of knight outside of the l.a. county sheriff's office early in morning. he's accused of plowing his car into a group of people in compton yesterday. test results for a patient in sacramento who could have ebola could come as early as this morning. that person showed up to mercy hospital, walked in showing
6:15 am
symptoms of ebola yesterday. that emergency room was sealed and shut down as a precaution. the patient moved to uc davis medical center also in sacramento. the countdown is on to super bowl xlix. commissioner goodell will give his nl state of the nfl address many hope he'll reinforce some of the recent policy changes. bob redell is live in arizona on the nfl beat, a live report coming up in about a half hour. scott mcgrew's popular san francisco company joins twitter, yahoo! and google. >> it's important, kris, that in a democracy we know what our government wants to know about us. particularly as we hear more and more about domestic spying. readit if you're unfamiliar is a bulletin board website, various postings are voted up and down by popularity and thousands of subreadits, with subjects like woodworking or slow cooking. readit has given its first
6:16 am
transparency reports saying what secrets it has to give out. it received 55 subpoenas for user information, a tiny number compared to google or yahoo!. readit just coming on the radar of government agencies. our parent comcast got 19,000 subpoenas. i do want to point this out to you as part of the statement because it is an important legal trick, it says readit received no national security letters. see that there at the bottom. these are the super secret fisa court orders so secret that if you're handed a national security letter, you're actually forbidden from telling anyone you've been given one. google pushed back last year, got permission to say they were given one, between 1 and 1,000. it's a pretty big number. what you can do, what readit did, this legal trick say you've never been given one. so sam and kris, when that disappears, we know they have one, it's like a myriad of mines internet style.
6:17 am
google disappointed some investors thursday afternoon when it made less money than some hoped. i say some. if you know google you knew this would happen. google and its financial filing has said it's more concerned with inventing the future like robot cars or space probes than it is with making money. oil prices fell under $44 a barrel yesterday, i think that will show up in the latest consumer numbers as good news. saved a couple of bucks at the pump, you buy some goods and services. it is hurting other industries. sam and kris the next to feel the squeeze could very well be green energy. >> plus a lot of people employed in the energy sector and thousands of people are losing their jobs right now. >> trucking, construction, i mean oil kind of filters down. we think of big oil and who cares about them? only it's a lot. >> thanks, scott. new drought concerns the result of the latest survey of the sierra snowpack are well
6:18 am
below normal, experts measures just over seven inches of snow near ecosummit. the snowpack provides california with a third of its total water supply. now as we look live at the bay bridge, there are two different models calling for rain, a lot of rain north of the golden gate bridge and certainly around the bay bridge but the other one calling for a little less rain, you say somewhere in the middle. >> because they agree i feel confident we'll at least get rain which is always a good thing. maybe i'll do that when i show you the groundhog forecast coming up. 6:18. temperatures mostly in the 30s and 40s and 50s. only spot the 30s are outlying inland valley spots at san martin, and otherwise watch
6:19 am
where we're headed, watch the rewound later on today up to 72 degrees. high pressure is strong and as we head throughout the next couple of days it will gain a little bit of energy and for us that means warmer temperatures coming your way. saturday san jose right downtown at 70 degrees, just a degree cooler for your sunday, and overall in san francisco, average this year is really running warm so far, so we've been well above average since the beginning of the year, we're going to see another above average weekend, and then we return to winter, as of next week, but not before monday and tuesday, keeping the numbers nice and steady through monday and tuesday, upper 60s coming your way in the south bay. here's where things start to get interesting, starting late thursday into friday and saturday, we've got a really rich system coming our way. for us, i think the system is going to stay put and just dump light rainfall continuously in the south bay and get heavier pockets up in the north bay. so if we do see that flooding, that occurs when the rain comes in so quickly that our roads are
6:20 am
not equipped to see the rain rate. for news the south bay it will be a prolonged steady event and let's talk about the models chris was referring to. here we go, this is the european model, and this is the model that basically got it wrong for new york city and doesn't mean it's always wrong. they rely upon this heavily. this brings in three-quarters of an inch of rain to the south bay. this is the one that got it right, most accurate i should say for new york city when it came to the snowstorm earlier this week and this is what we call the american model, the gfs pronging over five inches of rainfall in ukiah. look at the difference san jose between three-quarters and two inches. closer, 72 hours out i get to look at another model called the rpm model and this is the most accurate most of the time. it is my go to model. as we head through next week, we meet back here on monday, groundhog day that's where we'll take a look at and speaking of
6:21 am
which, punxsutawney phil live on this very program in just moments. nobody more excited about that than mike inouye. >> i am. like peter pan, i lost my shadow so i'm jealous of him. just kidding. here's what i rely on for much of my traffic data, a live camera and i look at it, oh, there's oakland and moving smoothly. the volume picking up a tad though and let me show you why, unusual slowing on the maps through san leandro. northbound 880 just got word from chp they have completely cleared all lanes. they're open earlier than we thought, north 880 at marina boulevard in san leandro. slow from 238 and recovering as the friday commute is much lighter than monday through thursday. slower drive developing south but hayward past the san mateo bridge and toward union city. not a big surprise and zoom out napa north of the san mateo bridge, concord and antioch slowing westbound. the crash eastbound toward
6:22 am
antioch and over there in the north bay on the left side of your screen the orange here means the road weather index indicating there will be fog like the last few days. we'll move toward the south bay and see northbound drive really kicking in now, northbound 101 through san jose. let's give you some live shots and show you palo alto, looking at low clouds hovering around our camera level, about eight stories up here across from university avenue so clouds show that cars disappear into the area but visibility is already. foster city couldn't show that bridge yesterday, the high-rise portion but today we can see it from foster city and there's a flat section coming across the san mateo bridge. live camera in foster city shows clouds are clear of the span 92 moves smoothly. still ahead new images of a brazen gold heist in san francisco that are crystal clear. we'll show them to you coming up next.
6:23 am
6:24 am
6:25 am
new details after a brazen armed robbery at a frye's electronics store on the peninsula. how the police released a sketch of the men involved officers say on wednesday this many an xlis wukd out of the store with three gaming consoles. the employees tried to stop them, one showed a revolver, both of them got away with the gaming ujconsoles. >> in san francisco the fbi
6:26 am
releasing images of three masked men who shashd into a bank and stole gold nuggets from a wells fargo. it's hard to get a look at fair faces. they crashed in san francisco's financial district on tuesday, stephanie chuang was reporting that for us and we made off with some $10,000 worth of gold and got away with artifacts taken from display cases. also a group advocating for the legalization of street racing visited the memorial of a jogger killed during an alleged street race earlier this week. the group lit candles at the growing memorial onnier ba ieye road. police say the two men charged with the crash did not even know each other but sadly, a life lost. 6:26 right now. the markets could come under pressure this morning after a strong look yesterday. we'll look at the numbers next
6:27 am
with scott mcgrew. >> the nfl commish will be addressing serious questions about the future of the nfl and its policies. the details coming up next. and looking live at the commute building for san jose, and those clouds will be gone later today, beautiful sunrise, and we'll tell you more about that coming up.
6:28 am
6:29 am
millions of people will watch the super bowl sunday but today all eyes will be on commissioner roger goodell. what he's expected to say about the future of the nfl. happy friday to you. we have fog settling in parts of the bay area, that will make way to afternoon sunshine, 70s for the weekend and many spots across the bay area before a good looking storm system moves in. we'll have the details on your changing forecast in just moments. the fog christina talks about is not in your usually suspects but not only in your usual suspects. we'll show you how the south bay commute is affected and fog for
6:30 am
the east shore east bay slowdown. and shake shack is on the nyse, the east coast based company. we see the nasdaq, with can he talk about them as well. i guarantee you we'll talk about shake shack, that's coming up. >> we target mike, we're very interested right now in the prospects of burgers. live look outside at 6:0 from the san bruno mountains, a bit of an ominous looking frame there. however we have a beautiful weekend in store for us. today is friday january the 30th and this is "today in the bay." very good friday morning. thank you for joining us. i'm sam brock. >> and i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia-cannon, and we just can't get enough of the super bowl and it hasn't even started yet. live look at the university of phoenix stadium where the big game will happen in a matter of days. this is not phoenix, though,
6:31 am
it's outside about ten miles away in glendale, arizona >> as the sunrise takes place there, look at this. we're going to show you time collapsed video of downtown phoenix, transforming into super bowl central. this is where nlz of fans are gathering all week long for the "ultimate fan experience." we can expect similar scenes like this right here in the bay area, when super bowl l comes to town next year. >> nbc bay area's sarah dollaf is at the center of the assignment. we'll hear from league commissioner roger goodell and probably a lot more people listening this time than in years past, sarah. >> reporter: that is correct, kris and sam, a microscope on goodell as he steps up to the microphone following a season where it was the off the field action grabbing headlines. katy perry walked into thursday's press conference wearing a football themed outfit and armed with a marshawn lynch
6:32 am
joke. >> i'm just hooer so i don't get fined. >> reporter: when asked if she has an eye on a particular player. >> i'm just here so i don't get fined. >> reporter: perry promiseed aan equally fun performance at halftime, producers already revealed lenny kravitz will perform alongside perry during her halftime show. >> we try to bring the crowd something different and the audience something different. by bringing henny kravitz in it will bring a twist to katy perry's performance. >> reporter: the game will be played on a worldwide stage. following a season with off the field action grabbing headlines, from domestic violence, sexual assault violations, the league and roger goodell widely criticized for inconsistent handling of events. goodell will step into the spotlight later today for the state of the nfl address, a speech where many hope to hear a strong reinforcement of new league policies.
6:33 am
>> there should be a zero tolerance. if you hit someone you lose your job. if i hit someone i'll probably lose my job. >> reporter: fans celebrate in arizona this weekend and a new champion is crowned this sunday, the future direction of the nfl will be played out in the months to come. and despite those off the field events the nfl had another record season and now that the weekend is here in arizona, excitement really ramping up. we were just talking about next year's excitement, guys and the guy behind the camera, photographer nelson and i are confident the niner also play in 20 2016. >> awesome to hear. we're hosting and we'd love to see that for sure. bob redell also in phoenix this morning, he'll join us in about 15 minutes with more on what bay area leaders are doing right now to get ready for that super bowl l which is still a year away. looking forward to that
6:34 am
super bowl xlix, katy perry is purchasing in the halftime performance. last year it was bruno mars. we look at downtown san jose. we could use a little uptown funk in our lives, especially this weekend. christina, don't believe me, just watch. >> oh, you, sam brock. you know what you're a firework baby. we got a good looking day shaping up. lenny kravitz is actually al roker's cousin? maybe you didn't know that. he'll have some exclusive information for you on that lenny kravitz performance and lenny kravitz if you have not seen his scarf give it a google. your current fog picture across the bay area, this is a rather serious situation developing and going to get worse as we head throughout the next hour, hour and a half. so watch out that dense fog is settling in especially up in marin county, all the way to sonoma county. i want to take you into the south bay, we're also seeing that thick fog develop between
6:35 am
morgan hill and gilroy. this is isolated on both ends of the bay area. give yourself extra time and please travel cautiously through that fog. temperatures are mostly in the 50s to start 5 is degrees in san francisco, a couple 40s out there on the east shore. 49 degrees, close to 50 on the peninsula and we're at 50 straight up with a nice deck of low clouds serving in the blanket. 68 degrees on the east shore, 67 degrees on the peninsula and here's the thing, weekend temperatures are going to stay nice and steady. so we're talking about 70 degrees by tomorrow in the south bay. isn't it nice to look at saturday we finally made it. 70 degrees a gorgeous day shaping up for you, sunday 69 degrees and looking good on monday to hold onto some warm temperatures. now monday's a significant day for forecasters around the day. it's punxsutawney phil day.
6:36 am
i believe he's going to see his shadow which would indicate six more weeks of winter and that's what we need here, mike. by the way, we haven't had any rainfall for the past 35 days in san francisco. we really need it. this guy lives in gobblers knob. i don't know why it's called that but it's a cute name. >> maybe that's what we should google in addition to lenny kravitz, scarf. maybe they get together, punxsutawney scarf. in the south bay a live look one of the things we've been watching all morning is the effected of the low clouds and fog. the glowing lights continue but not affecting the speeds. the volume 101 at 680 is what the map will show you where the arrow is, where we're talking about the stretch north from capital expressway up to 680 and a little build for 87 and 85. typical pattern for the south bay and silicon valley for friday. let's move downward christina was talking about some of the fog creeping in for the road weather index. drivers through morgan hill will get lower visibility. we see slowing typical, and
6:37 am
we're looking towards anywhere north of the area. palo alto first of all i want to show you the camera, changed in the last couple of minutes. the low clouds creeping in once again. most of the cover between our eighth story camera as well as the roadway, between there with the low clouds, drivers are okay for speeds but still an issue coming across perhaps the san mateo or dumb barton bridges. back to the maps how things are shaping up. sorry, look at the maps, thank you for making that happen in the control room. the north bay the orange shows you the road weather index indicating fog north of mill valley into petaluma, highway 37 and napa, solano county typical north of the carquinez bridge. the bridges don't show any delays, so typical for a friday, relatively smooth commute and earlier slowing through san leandro has cleared up after they cleared the overnight crash. >> good news. >> thank you very much, mike. 6:37, the markets have been open for a couple of minutes. >> there were flashers on the new york stock exchange, scott mcgrew, flashers.
6:38 am
>> there were flashers, is that why we couldn't show them to you? >> no, flashing lights. >> i was talking earlier about shake shack. they opened the markets this morning. this is an east coast company but they just ipo'd and boy are people excited about this fast, casual idea. there was none in california but the people are excited by the chipotles and the new houses and new company and that sort of thing and this may be a very hot stock. again guys, trading on the nyse not the nasdaq. it's been a while since we've seen a nasdaq ipo >> shake shack handed out the little flashers you get when your order's ready, they had it going off. >> i wondered why. somebody say press the button and turned it off >> thank you, we'll be back with more news.
6:39 am
6:40 am
6:41 am
>> missing money and all the signs point to an account insiders call the principal piggy bank. >> investors are looking into allegations a former principal of san jose high school stole thousands of dollars from students and the district. we obtained an audit conducted by the district never made public until now. records show former principal carrie catching controlled thousands of dollars in a private slush fund spending money on expensive meals, clothing for other administrator, even lotto tickets. the district found some $7,300 worth of expenses that have no receipts or explanations, including checks catching wrote
6:42 am
to herself. former staffers say cash from student fund-raisers simply disappeared when catching was in charge of the money. >> we didn't know what happened, we double counted the money ourselves, we neve made a mistake like that before and it's not a small enough amount. >> reporter: where did the money go? what happened to the $7,000 in expenses that have missing receipts? >> tonight at 11:00, what happened to the aleast $10,000 in rental fees that should have been paid to the district and why the superintendent stocked investigating. we will avery more. >> if you have tips call us at 8-tips or e-mail us at theunit@nbcbayarea.com. >> super bowl sunday quickly approaching. we'll be right back.

6:44 am
6:45 am
two days and counting until the new england patriots and the seattle seahawks square off battling on the gridiron for the right to call themselves the best teams in the nl. all of the action will go down right there inside the university of phoenix state. >> the stadium actually not in phoenix, it's in glendale, about ten miles northwest of phoenix. phoenix know where all of the rest of the fun is happening. it's also where "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live this morning and bob, this year's super bowl is really a business trip right off for some bay area leaders. >> reporter: you are correct, good morning to you, kris and sam. we've got about 15 to 20 members of the super bowl l host committee who arrived here earlier in the week from the bay area, coming here to phoenix to see how they're putting on super bowl 49. next year it will be their turn when they bring the ball to the san francisco area.
6:46 am
it's quite an undertaking. phoenix expecting a million visitors, you see we've got a few there already here early in the morning, trying to get their mugs on the "today" show. they turned this 12-block area of downtown phoenix into super bowl central, so much here to do, it makes your head turn. you've got this large rock climbing wall called the grand canyon experience, all sorts of vennors, concert stage for live music, drew quite a crowd in spite of all the rain we've been happening. couple blocks away taking up four floors in the phoenix convention center is the nfl experience, interactive zone for any fan who ever wanted to try to be a professional football player and in this crowd is one man charged with trying to replicate and improve upon the experience next year when the super bowl comes to the bay area, super bowl l host committee keith bruce to learn from phoenix to see how they handle strat it cans like public security, security is tight out here and trying to come up with
6:47 am

if you take a look, these coasters are magical because there you have it, it has the countdown clock, 372 days, 20 hours, 42 minutes and 4, 3, 2 seconds to next year's super bowl, which will be february 7th, 2016. they have a lot of work ahead for them. this is something they've been working on for a year and a half now and they do have about 12 months to go but when you're putting on an event of this side, that time can go by real fast. reporting live in phoenix, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> i'm disappointed. i asked about the climb the rock wall. this is what bob wrote. "bob plus heights on twitter equals shaky tv reporter." you can't try to cover it up at the last minute, bob, what are you doing? fail, #fail. >> reporter: i have wobbly knees. you don't want to see me up there. >> thank you, bob. plus it's wet out there. freak storm in phoenix i'd say,

right? looking live at san jose a morning where there is not rain now but rain down the road. meteorologist christina loren with that and lovely forecast for the weekend. >> it will be very nice, happy friday, everybody. 6:49 now. you might be trying to get down to the phoenix airport from san francisco. what's funny is heavy rains phoenix, no flight delays there. san francisco low clouds and at an hour plus delay, hour plus one minute that is. if you're trying to get over to the east coast, maybe your travels take you that way this weekend, flight delays new york city just over an hour there and 30 minutes in d.c. and that's because of another storm system headed that way bringing it into the snow. as we head throughout the day today we'll continue to see reports right here on nbc bay area, live from glendale and you can see that rain coming in. that's the case for today and tomorrow. let me show you your futurecast though, just in time for the super bowl, on sunday, everything clears out and that is a really welcome sight because they don't have a roof

over the field at that stadium. for us, temperatures are going to be just spectacular this weekend. we're starting out pretty chilly out there, grab a jacket. something that you can peel off later on today, looking towards temperatures just about at 70 degrees here in the south bay, the peninsula same for you and 65 degrees in san francisco. meanwhile at 72 degrees in the north bay. so let me get you into this weekend, with temperatures really comfortable for both saturday and sunday, hopefully not sparing the air if we do. better chance will be for saturday than on sunday. we'll keep you updated. check out our facebook or twitter page and monday into tuesday staying nice and warm before things start to change. let me show you the futurecast what we are expecting from the next storm system and next week when we meet back here hopefully i'll have the same story to tell you about a overall every time i check the runs of the forecast models they look better and better. so i stopped that clock for you at 8:00 p.m. on friday, heavier rainfall moving into the north bay. we'll see a prolonged period of
6:51 am
steady rainfall here in the south bay where we desperately need that rain. let me give you an idea of what our two most reliable forecast models that go seven days out or beyond are suggesting and that's over three inches of rain. this is the european model, these are the totals aren't looking as significant as the forecast model that i typically rely on, that's the gfs model. forecasting about three-quarters of an inch in the south bay, just under an inch in palo alto and livermore and over an inch for walnut creek. like i said, this one is a little bit shy. the more bullish model is the gfs and this is the one that was more accurate with the storm system that rolled through new york city. so here's what we're seeing there, two inches plus in san jose, over two and a half inches in places beyond the marin county line and you can see here five and a half potential in ukiah to clear lake region. we need this rain desperately and it looks like it will rain. just how much will we get is the

county. pretty typical for the maze and approach. live look emeryville westbound away toward the bay bridge you can see that low clouds hover around, no big issues but the metering lights are on the span and foster side of the san mateo bridge low clouds and haze we may leave visible at the top of the hill but looking okay on the high-rise across 29 so far. back to you. now to a perplexing and ghastly story from san francisco, a possible clue for police investigating the gruesome discovery in san francisco of body parts found in a suitcase at 11th and market streets and more body parts found nearby. >> this is a bit much even for the bay area, sees a lot of different stories. off. that said, we have made fun of the theory. we have a personal theory, laura knows, if kids open the nasdaq, the nasdaq opens higher, we're right 60% of the time so you can kind of make up just about anything and play it out long enough you may find out you're right. >> 60% of the time it works every time. >> thank you, very much, scott. we'll turn to breaking in us this morning, we have received confirmation two unvaccinated children in marin county are confirmed to have contracted the measles. the county health department says the kids are school aged but they don't think there are other students at risk. >> so the children are going to be isolated for the next three weeks. health officials say there is no risk at the schools, the protocol of borrowing unvaccinated ki e e ed barring unvaccinated kids for 21 days will not be observed. meteorologist christina loren says dry and piled this ek would understand, that means
