good morning. not again. another round of heavy snow and frigid temperatures set to impact up to 100 million people across the country this weekend. from the midwest to the northeast, up to a foot of snow expected in some areas. dylan is tracking it for us. ready for the big game. we'll hear what nfl commissioner roger goodell has to say about deflated footballs and how they plan to protect them for tomorrow's big game. but will a measles outbreak keep people from going to the game? and will richard sherman miss the game if his baby boy decides to arrive early? bruce jenner's journey, a report out this morning that the olympic champion is

good morning. >> that's right. all these fans came out. we are at super bowl central, and it's been raining off and on for the last three days. i mean, they just -- over 300 days of sunshine, guys. will they get sunshine for the super bowl? we'll let you know coming up, but it is not dampening the enthusiasm of -- >> so many people out there. >> it's funny how that works, dylan. >> yeah we'll have super bowl coverage throughout the hour but we begin with our top story. it will involve dylan eventually wearing down parkas again. >> dylan is hiding under the desk. >> with good reason. here we go again. many cities already crippled bracing for round two. some areas can see up to an additional foot of snow before it's all said and done and dylan, take it away.

>> first it starts with the cold. if you have been outside this morning you know the cold is out there. temperatures are just so cold and especially when you factor in the windchill and we have got temperatures that are in the teens and 20s. 2 below in syracuse but it feels like in new york city it's 5 below. so this cold air sets the stage for the next storm system moving in. here it is. you can see some snow moving through areas like northern kansas into southern nebraska. this is going to eventually turn into a snowstorm for chicago. indianapolis and cleveland and this is where we have the winter storm warning, since it's later in the forecast period that's where we have the winter storm watch. here's the timing into tonight. omaha, nebraska seeing the snow. it moves into chicago, becomes heavy at times overnight into sunday morning. it starts to spread into buffalo, and erie pennsylvania. sunday we're watching this rain/snow line. if this was a little further to the north not much of a snowstorm for new york city but further to the south we could be looking up to ten or more inches

of snow for new york city. things will change as we go through the next couple of days but chicago could see a foot of snow. that pink is the best chance of seeing a foot of snow and you can see it's just to the north of new york city. unfortunately, southern new england and into boston that's an area that's still digging out from two feet of snow and we could add another foot on top of that. >> all right. we have some hot tea for you before you head back over there. >> keep it coming this morning. >> thanks. well despite some rain this week as al mentioned weather should hopefully not be much of an issue for the super bowl tomorrow. our team in arizona is covering all the angles of the big game. including this morning those efforts to avoid a second deflategate. roger goodell is tackling that topic and more on friday. nbc national correspondent peter alexander is in phoenix with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: erica, good morning to you. this city is certainly ready and so the nfl right now. barely 36 hours until they kick off in the super bowl and as spectacle as it is it wrapped

up what the commissioner acknowledges has been a tough season. the latest challenge he noted, deflategate. here's where things stand. bothth teams have now handed over 54 footballs to be inspected and approved tomorrow before the game. but those balls right now are safely in the hands of the league. on the eve of america's biggest sports event, several days of unusually wet weather here in the arizona desert hasn't dampened the excitement of fans. >> go hawks! woohoo! >> reporter: but the league continues to deal with a storm of its own, deflate-gate which roger goodell said will be investigated fully. >> this is my responsibility to protect the integrity of the game. i represent 32 teams. all of us want to make sure that the rules are being followed. >> reporter: with a season dominated by off-the-field headlines, goodell acknowledged it's taken a toll. >> it's been a tough year on me personally. it's been a year of what i would say humility and learning. >> reporter: while the league has promised more security for the game balls on sunday, the

two opposing coaches seated side by side friday steered clear of the controversy. and it was the seahawks' coach pete carroll with the line of the day, when asked whether his star cornerback richard sherman could miss the super bowl because his girlfriend is expecting their first baby any day. >> if he's faced with that decision we'll support him. and we'll see how that goes. you know we wish him luck. can't wait to see little petey. [ laughter ] >> reporter: as players and coaches prepare, halftime performer katy perry is stoking excitement vowing an a-game of her own. >> i think i'm probably the only person in super bowl halftime history that will ever bring both a lion and sharks to the show. >> lions and sharks? >> it's going to be wild out there. >> and she's keeping america guessing. just who is her surprise female performer? >> when this person enters the stage and when you hear the first ring of the chord, i think jaws will drop and faces will melt. there's just going to be some

melting. >> reporter: latest on that is it going to be madonna? will it be janet jackson? those names are all a part of the mix right now. but this morning, the latest speculation, some reports suggesting rapper missy elliott will join katy perry and lenny kravitz on the screen. >> jaws dropping. faces melting. >> that's a lot to live up to. >> that's a lot. >> although lenny kravitz works for me in that department. i think we're covered. peter alexander, thanks. arizona is more than just one of a dozen states with a measles outbreak. some doctors are warning if folks haven't been vaccinated they should stay away from the super bowl. halle jackson is outside of the stadium. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, lester. we are getting word this morning that this measles outbreak still a concern from coast to coast, with news that a student in new york boarded an amtrak train at penn station, one of the busiest strain stations in the country. here in arizona at the super bowl, officials are monitoring

any public health threats, so for for example, keeping an eye on any spikes in visits to urgent care centers. that's pretty standard for any big event like the super bowl but may take on special importance given this latest outbreak. today, thousands of people are arriving in phoenix for the country's most watched game during a closely watched measles outbreak. about a thousand people are being monitored in arizona after they may have been exposed to the virus, and now with neighboring california reporting 12 new cases in just the last couple days, there's concern it could spread. >> i wouldn't take an infant less than 1 year old to the super bowl, or anywhere actually, where there was an outbreak of measles. >> reporter: unvaccinated people are almost certain to catch the contagious virus if they come into contact with it, and the cdc says people who are sick shouldn't travel. >> much of the onus goes on the person who has measles. if you do have measles, you should probably stay home. >> reporter: arizona is one of 14 states seeing measles cases.

most linked to disneyland. urijah kruger's parents thought he caught it at the theme park. >> i had to be really strong for him. like holding him close to me. on the other side i'm crying. >> you're seeing the implications of people who are getting a vaccine and aren't and what that looks like. >> reporter: but if you have been immunized and want to head to phoenix, doctors say game on. the cdc says it wouldn't expect a lot of unvaccinated people to be congregating here at the super bowl and that could partly be because of the demographic. kids too young for the measles vaccine are most at risk and you're just not seeing a lot of infants here in glendale here this weekend. lester? >> halle jackson, thanks very much. a high school student is suspected and accused of planting a sophisticated bomb in a school bathroom. the school in columbia tennessee, was evacuated friday morning after the bomb was discovered. a student stumbled on the device

and saw it was attached to a digital counter that was counting down. police requested that we partially blur this image of the bomb. the bomb squad destroyed the threat and the suspected student is facing felony charges. tense negotiations for two hostages held by islamic radicals are deadlocked this morning. isis wants the return of a would-be suicide bomber in exchange for a japanese journalist and a jordanian pilot. there's no word on the condition of the hostages today. a new record for balloon flight was set this morning. a two-man team one american and one russian, have flown longer and farther than anyone before. the balloon left japan sunday morning and will touch down in mexico later today, more than 6,000 miles in 140 hours in the air. serena williams added a notch to her belt this morning in australia. serena defeated her longtime tennis rival maria sharapova in straight sets. this is williams' sixth australian open championship a sixth australian open championship and 19th grand

slam title. now to a dramatic rescue in los angeles. take a look amid the river on friday a dog, small dog struggling to keep his head above the water. a firefighter dangling from a helicopter managed to get ahold of the dog and the pair was pulled to safety. the dog here doesn't have identification so the firefighters have named him lucky. >> oh. cute. >> glad he's okay this morning. >> he's safe. >> he almost looks embarrassed. i'm so sorry to cause all that trouble. >> thanks. >> there's some sunshine on the east side too. but it comes with cold temperatures. we have sun from seattle right down into southern california. foggy this morning but we'll lose that fog. we're focusing on the rain up into kansas. but on the northern side of that where it's colder, that's where we're looking at some snow eventually moving into chicago

aaron hernandez was once celebrated tight end. he played in the last super bowl appearance by the patriots but this morning, he is behind bars on trial for murder. nbc's ron mott has more for us. >> reporter: erica, good morning. by any measure, aaron hernandez was on the way to greatness on the football field. prosecutors back in massachusetts say he was on the way to trouble, and implicated in not one, but two murders. >> second and a deuce. over the middle. touchdown, hernandez! >> reporter: at super bowl xlvi years ago, aaron hernandez helped the patriots build a lead. the one they would lose along with the game. now with his former teammates are preparing for another chance of glory, the former tight end's downfall is playing out in the massachusetts courtroom. >> the evidence will show that aaron hernandez is an innocent man. >> reporter: on trial for the murder of a friend 27-year-old

odin lloyd. >> they drove to a secluded isolated area in north attleboro. there he shot his friend. >> reporter: hernandez grabbed attention in the nfl when the patriots awarded him with a $40 million contract in 2012. the same year where he gunned down two at a nightclub. hernandez has pleaded not guilty to all charges. his lawyer saying prosecutors in the current trial ignored evidence and zeroed in on hernandez from the start. >> the shock value certainly in new england and the country is amazing. gangster in the huddle. >> reporter: the judge overseeing the trial says jurors can watch the super bowl tomorrow but hernandez is in prison and jurors are told to

>> ready, go. >> reporter: you have heard of a retractable roof? this is a retractable field. a turf surface that usually lives outside the stadium. >> it allows the field to be maintained out there in the bright heat of the arizona sun. >> reporter: but before game time the grass makes its move on a kind of tray. the only one like it in the country. in a game of inches that's how the field rolls in. a little at a time until 19 million pounds of turf is under the dome and under the close watch of groundskeepers. >> really from every point here on, it goes down a notch. so we have to start rubbing on it and start paying attention to it. >> reporter: 92,000 square feet of grass meticulously maintained and babied until the big day. field crews are brushing each blade of grass. groundskeepers are really the only folks organizers want on

which helps military veterans and their families pursue higher education. one of the most recent recipients is ed woodward. he decided to leave his dream behind to fulfill his late brother's legacy. nbc sports josh elliott has the story. >> reporter: in 2006 ed woodward was just five flights from graduating flight school. but shortly after a test flight in oregon he developed a blood clot in his brain. his recovery was an arduous one. but throughout, he insisted he would do anything to be allowed to fly. but the air force said the risk was too great. >> that's when i realized that i had lost -- i'd never get to fly again. >> reporter: suddenly without purpose, ed felt hopelessly lost until the day his grandfather had an idea. >> and he said i don't know what to do. i don't know what i can do.

he looked at me and he said, why don't you finish what jimmy started. >> reporter: finish what gene started. that's a story that begins in the summer of 2000. on the day ed's twin brother gene finished his first year of medical school. ed and gene went out to celebrate. on the way home, their vehicle was struck by a drunk driver going 120 miles per hour. >> we flipped a couple times and spun. i couldn't get him out and i realized he was pinned. i just felt so weak and helpless. that day, that night. >> more than a decade after the crash, ed woodward was told he'd never fly another mission in an f-15, but then he looked to his
