network. and made its way into this year's state of the union address. >> we're making sure our government integrates intelligence to combat cyberthreats. >> threats beyond identity theft movie and memos, to ability to hack into computer systems that control our vital infrastructure. you are looking at a 2007 game changing government test. video provided to cnn by the government. the department of homeland security used keyboard and computers as weapons. it caused this generator, inside an electric power plant to self destruct. it ultimately proved and demonstrated on video, that you can destroy physical equipment with a cyberattack. gary peterson worked for department of home lantland secured. and designed project aurora. it include time with the department of defense and nuclear regulatory commission.

cybersecurity. if we dent act we'll leave our nation and economy vulnerable. >> sonny in the grand scheme of things didn't affect -- anybody's, physical well being. what we're talking about affects people's physical well being. and there are countries that want to do this. >> the bad guys are getting much more sophisticated. they're moving faster. like they're in a dead run. and we're kind of shuffling around. taking baby steps. >> many of the experts we talked with. said they feared it would take a significant disaster and lawsuits before the public are willing to accept the cost and loss of convenience that real cybersecurity requires. here's the challenge though. much of that responsibility remains with the private industry. and public utilities. coming up tomorrow. our series report continues. steven stock investigates
