coming up on "early today." federal investigators comb through the wreckage of tuesday's deadly commuter train crash in new york while the questions remain. why was an suv stopped on the tracks? outrage from georgia and the arab world over the brutal killing of a jordanian pilot at the hands of isis. plus the old man hair style for miss behaving kids. a special unveiling on "the tonight show." and jimmy fallon reunites the game from bayside high. it's february 5th and "early today" starts now. good morning. i'm dara brown. service on a new york commuter line is back in service two days after a deadly collision with an suv. investigators are also getting a clearer picture of what caused the accident through the eyes of a driver who saw it happen.

nbc's kurt gregory has the latest. >> reporter: the crumpled and charred remains were removed wednesday as investigators with ntsb combed wreckage in valhalla, new york. >> we have surveyed the scene and obtained detailed measurements of the wreckage area. >> all units, more ambulances are required for a car versus train motor vehicle accident. >> reporter: emergency workers arriving at the accident during tuesday evening's rush hour found a horrific scene, twisted metal, smoke and fire. >> it was billowing everywhere. >> reporter: according to witnesses a sports utility vehicle was sitting on the tracks when the arm came down. the driver a mother of three, got out to check for damage. >> turns, walks, guess back in the car. slight hesitation and then moves forward. at that instant the train came. >> reporter: the collision so

powerful the electrofied third rail ripped through tearing through the suv and into the first train car. >> flames came up about a foot away from my face. after that happened people are screaming, crying. >> reporter: six were killed including the suv's driver 49-year-old ellen brody. >> it's really devastating. it's a devastating loss not only to the family but to all her many friends. >> reporter: a loss shared by five other families as the search for why the tragic accident happened continues. curt gregly nbc news. in jordan this morning, outrage following the death of a jordanian pilot at the hands of isis militants. at the same time though the coalition battling the extremist group is showing strain. the king of jordan is asking u.s. lawmakers for more weapons and assistance to fight the terrorists. the united arab emirates has suspended syrian airstrikes citing a lack of rescue resources. nbc's tracie potts is live in washington.

tracie, good morning to you. what is next in the u.s. for this fight against isis? >> reporter: well what's next is trying to hold that coalition together and keep it strong. the man who may soon be in charge of that from a military standpoint is ashton carter. he is trying to be confirmed as defense secretary and told congress what we're doing right now, it just isn't enough. >> we need partners on the ground to beat isis. >> some of those partners are leaving. senior defense and military officials now confirm the united arab emirates has pulled its pilot from the fight against isis because they want more search and rerescue teams close to syria in case pilots go down. jordan is asking for more weapons. >> a lot requires important coordination, not just in terms of the work we have to do with congress but also in terms of the work we'll do with jordanians to ensure that we are providing the actual assistance they are requesting and that they need. >> reporter: anger is boiling over in jordan after an isis

video showing their pilot burned alive. turns out it happened weeks ago. >> isis is really trying to fracture the coalition. >> reporter: jordan isn't waiting for the coalition. they have executed two prisoners in retaliation. ashton carter seeking confirmation as defense secretary tells congress. >> the united states involvement is, i believe, essential, it's necessary, but it's not sufficient. >> reporter: some lawmakers are skeptical the u.s. strategy is working. >> if you're not winning in war, you are losing. >> the u.s. does have support from the british. >> we will not stop until the murderous isil extremists behind this and poisonous ideology are eradicated. >> reporter: it's not clear that's going to happen any time soon. but what is clear, democrats and republicans here on capitol hill want to see more action on the senate armed services committee they all voted, democrats, republicans, all 26 of them in favor of getting that military equipment to jordan. >> a busy day ahead, tracie.

thank you so much for the update. crews in taiwan are working against cold waters low visibility and time. right now the death toll from tuesday night's plane crash stands at 31 but that number could rise. 12 people are still missing. meanwhile investigators are still trying to figure out what went wrong. nbc's ian williams reports. >> reporter: the dramatic final moments captured by dash cams of passing cars. the trans asia twin prop plane clipping an elevated roadway before slamming into the river below. 58 passengers and crew trapped in fuselage upside down and in the water. a rescued child, more than a dozen pulled to safety. a massive operation painstakingly extracting survivors as an anxious crowd gathered on the river bank. survivors were rushed to local hospitals. on the elevated roadway, debris where the plane hit and a battered taxi the same one that

could be seen just ahead in this dash-cam video. the driver and passenger stunned but alive. the video shows the plane narrowly missing nearby apartment buildings. fueling speculation the pilot deliberately swerved to avoid them. the plane went down two minutes after taking off from taipei's songshan airport. posted online the pilot's recorded distress call. >> mayday mayday, engine flameout. >> reporter: engine flameout suggesting possible engine trouble. >> the pro pl -- propellers this one spinning at a faster speed than this one. can you see all four blades here and they are almost stopped or much slower than this one. this indicates this engine is producing power while this one may very well not be producing power. >> reporter: the cause should be known soon. the black boxes have already been recovered. the battered fuselage was hoisted from the river as the search continues for the missing

with the death toll almost certain to rise. ian williams nbc news beijing. hackers have struck the second largest health insurance company in the u.s. officials are calling it a very skpised attack. anthem blue cross blue shield says it affects 80 million current and former members. this includes employees covered under their insurance both now and in the past. they say hackers got access to personal information like names, home addresses and social security numbers. but the company says so far there's no evidence hackers got their hands on medical information. credit card banking or financial information. anthem's president and ceo put out a personal statement on a separate website explaining the data breach. the company has set up a toll-free number for customers wanting more information. it will also reach out to each person whose information was compromised. an nbc meteorologist bill karins is here with our thursday forecast. good morning to you, bill. >> active thursday in the west. a lot of rain flash flood watches, three storms coming in.

one big one, british columbia dragging moisture and rain especially san francisco northwards. the other areas we're going to deal with a lot of heavy rain are going to continue to be areas from san francisco bay, southport, all the way up. as far as north bay, they will see heaviest amounts. as we go through next couple days watch rainfall increasing to the second wave that's going to come in. that's going to come in as we go throughout friday friday afternoon and friday evening. a closer look at the radar does show that rainfall along west coast and also right down through portland areas. this is round one of a really rainy night, second batch that will bring bay area the best chance of your heavy rains. so looks like by sunday maybe monday everything should be cleared out for the west.

without this one, without flooding of course as we can. the weather pattern after this doesn't look like it will stay wet. looks like we need to get what we're going to get today. most of the rain is focused in the northwest and all the way down through northern california. maybe north bay this first one will get. the models have been tapering off in the bay with the first shot. then the second storm comes in as we go throughout friday. this one looks like it will be the more significant rainfall for areas that are seeing worst drought conditions in central and northern california. that's where we're hoping to get three to six inches at the most. by the time we get the extended period showers leftover a piece of the system that will come through the weekend. i kept showers in the forecast on monday. for the most part i think we will dry out by then. it's a nice active wet pattern but not doing to stay that way. looks to get warm and dry starting next week. >> for four days get those boots out. >> four days. dust them off. >> exactly. now to entertainment news in preparation for the 40th

millions are falling victim to a new type of hacking called ransom ware. they get into your computer take control of your files and demand you play a ransom. >> reporter: psychothey are bice valerie gosk didn't know what to think when she couldn't access files on her computer patient information, tax documents, everything was encrypted, locked up and held for ransom. >> i was really scared and not sure what was the right thing to do. i felt violated. >> reporter: to unlock the files cyber criminals demanded $500 in bitcoin currency. they gave her 24 hours with a clock counting down on her
