5:00 am
i'm scott mcgrew in for sam brock. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. be careful as you head out the door, the roads will be wet very soon. mike inouye will look at your morning commute and the affects of that rain when it starts coming down, in just a moment. meteorologist christina loren is really tracking the storm, look at that radar all lit up. >> we're just getting this thing going. you've got to tell you, it starts today, heaviest time frame between 0k a.m. and 6:00 p. frame between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. microclimate where you live will dictate how much you get out of this storm system. it is a powerful storm in addition to the light rain we're seeing from sonoma county south to marin. we also have this fierce wind indicative of that storm moving in quickly. we jump from 10 miles per hour sustained to 22 in san jose, getting gusts to 35, 40 miles per hour so the wind will pick up where you live before the rain even begins. temperatures right now mostly in the 50s.
5:01 am
we're not going to climb by that much as we get into your afternoon. everybody counting on the rain showers, heavy at times. grab your umbrella no matter where you're positioned across the bay area, you will see the rain for today. otherwise, highs are going to be relatively mild. we'll hit about 63 degrees in the tri valley. 61 in san francisco and 59 degrees in the north bay and hey, i'm going to show thyou th time line for showers coming up in my next report. first want to check the impact of your drive, wind will be a factor for motorists this morning. >> let a's illustrate by the live shot, i should bounce up and down as well to mach it look like i'm live in front of it but i'm not. the bay bridge viewable from emeryville. the camera is shaken around by the wind. the traffic flow is just fine because it's so light right now but bay bridge, richmond/san rafael bridge likely to be impacted by the wind this morning. stephanie chuang will give us an update in seconds but i wanted to show you the traffic flow,
5:02 am
threw fre month after a deadly overnight crash. the flag is flapping around, the wind is kicking in. >> another look at our real time doppler radar this morning you see the rain is moving in and probably hit the north bay first. >> "today in the bay's" stephanie chuang is live in tiburon where people are making some last-minute preparations for that storm. stephanie? >> reporter: good morning, scott and laura. i just chatted with christina. she said take off the hat. the story is not the rain just yet, not for another hour and a half. the wind has been picking up and blowing my hair around. as you can see the rains from december diddic pact that store, sham main issalon, still closed for remodeling. it did get pretty bad in december when you can see from the surveillance footage that the water made its way into the storefront, flooding it enough to force the closure and that was due to a pump failure in this area that also flooded
5:03 am
nearby homes. people who live and work here already stacked the sandbags including mill valley at the 2:00 a.m. club which knows the routine before the wet weather hits. >> when it rains and sometimes when it's heavy rain with high tide this area here floods. we just put the bags in front to keep it from coming in. >> reporter: people are hoping of course it doesn't get bad as it did in december. the flooding that happened also hit pablo castro's home in tiburon. he lost artwork damaged by water and still having disagreements with insurance and fema will covering home repair costs. back here live this store again is still closed. repair work is still being done here. public works crews in marin county are ready to respond in case things get bad. still dry. we'll keep you posted. stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> thank you, steph. further to the north the

threat of rain has not kept beer aficionados from their favorite brew. people waiting outside the rushing river brewery to get their hands on pliny. some say it's the best beer in america. pliny the yunger sold two weeks and other places. brutery expects 500 people to be there when the doors open at 11:00 a.m. >> they like their pliny. people in san francisco getting ready for the storm as well. "today in the bay's" rob redell is live from w that side of the story for us. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you there, laura and scott. right now we're starting to feel a slight breeze, nothing to be concerned about obviously but this could be the precursor to the gusts we are expecting, 15 to 40 miles per hour, depending where you are in the bay area which could lead to scenes like this, the video of the storm we saw six weeks ago over the holiday in december, many trees
5:05 am
taking down power lines, busting holes into some people's roofs, and that's why we know in the past 48 hours tree trimmers were out there especially in the santa cruz mountains trying to get the limbs down so they wouldn't have any problems. back out here live in the mission district, right now just starting to feel the first drops of rain coming down here. i don't know if this is going to be the start of something much bigger like we're expecting through the day but we are expecting this and we are here at folsom between 17th and 18th, it's considered one of the lowest lying points in the city. if you look at the sign here at this business, still under construction through the flooding they suffered six to eight weeks ago and here they are again got their barriers up, fingers crossed if there is flooding here in this section of the city, it's not going to be anywhere as bad as it was about two months ago. reporting live here in sf, we're starting to see some of the rain now, rob redell, "today in the bay." >> we'll keep checking with you, thanks, bob. in the sierra a high wind
5:06 am
warning went into effect. >> the wind could exceed more than 100 miles per hour in the higher elevations. they're expected to see up to three feet of snow in a 24-hour period. other parts a lot of heavy rain. >> it will bring some snow but the latest storm is not expected to do much for tahoe area ski resorts. temperatures will be above freezing in all of the highest elevations, leading to rain. not snow. number of smaller resorts have actually closed down last month. there just wasn't enough snow to operate. the storm's not going to help cover those barren slopes. so once again, no good news for skiers. >> it's been too warm. >> last year was terrible, too. >> exactfully but at least we are getting some rain. the soaking with to happen. christina will look at our microclimate weather alert we've issued. >> good morning to you. for wind and rain and like i've been telling you, just like i told you yesterday, the heavy stuff doesn't move in until we get into midday, but the light stuff is already making a big impact.
5:07 am
we've already accumulated over a half inch of rain in parts of the north bay with potentially several inches more for today, and another wave of heavy rain as we get into your weekend. so i'm going to show you the timing of this as we head throughout the morning hours. rob redell told you he's feeling his first rain showers right now. south san francisco getting a good dousing of rain as we head throughout the morning hours we'll watch this thing in real time develop and between now and about 6:00, big changes on the way that we will be showing you right here on "today in the bay." take a look at this. this is san jose, winds like we usually don't see her, camera violently taking shake and you can see here, 10 miles previously, now we're up to 22 miles sustained with gusts up to 40 miles per hour right here in the south bay, and the wind is going to start where you live before the rain showers do. down in the south bay we have to wait until 10:00 a.m. for the heavy stuff to come through. we could see downed trees
5:08 am
through the santa cruz mountains. our camera here rarely shakes like this. this is something we're watching for you. we'll show you the time line. we want to get you outdoors for part of the weekend if that's something you're looking to do. with the combination of wind and rain you can expect delays for the morning drive. the man who has all the answers on what could slow you down mike inouye. >> good morning, christina. calmer view from our san jose camera at 101 and 680, mounted to a rooftop camera close to street level so that's why things are much calmer right here and so is the drive. because it's a friday, dry roads so far but christina is talking about that rain coming in that will impact your day all over the bay. we're talking about the entire san jose and silicon valley area, we're showing a smooth drive with the green sensors on the roadways. all the way on your left we're looking at the green blotch. this is what will show up all over the bay, green and into blue as we have reports of first wet or damp roadways and perhaps puddling and ponding for much of the south bay and the rest of your bay as the morning
5:09 am
continues. right now a smooth, easy drive along the peninsula side, or along the coast sprinkles coming in as well as chris too in a and bob talked about between san mateo and, highway 82 and the golden gate bridge. easy drive along either side of the water. in the north bay as we move up, looking north to the golden gate bridge, novato, mill valley moving smoothly. rain in healdsburg, watch out highway 101. the bay bridge toll plaza very calm now. things will of course change. >> thanks, mike. let's take another look at the radar. meteorologist christina loren is tracking the storm all morning. she'll have another update when it will arrive at your front door. for your weather, download the nbc bay area app free on iphone and android platforms. at 5:09 we have an update to breaking news this morning. investigators trying to figure out why a driver went the wrong way, causing a fiery wreck on interstate 880. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez live along the freeway
5:10 am
in fremont this morning. one person was killed and others rushed to the hospital. >> reporter: yes and that's the thing, laura, 880 is open again but so is the investigation into why that woman was driving at such a high rate of speed in the wrong direction on an interstate this morning. this is the aftermath after the crash that that driver caused. that driver and the one that she hit head-on were both completely engulfed in flames. according to the california highway patrol it was about 12:30 this morning when the driver of that car going faster than the speed limit, speeds more than 70 miles an hour in the wrong direction hit the driver of an oncoming truck. the force of that impact split that truck in two before both of the vehicles burst into flames with drivers and passengers still inside. >> upon the collision, the cab of the truck that, the quad cab, quad cab of the truck completely separated from the chassis and the bed of the truck.
5:11 am
it landed probably 10 to 15 feet in front of the chassis. >> reporter: the chp believes that the driver who was headed in the wrong direction was a woman. she died here at the scene. the three victims that she struck in that truck were pulled from their truck. only one of the three was conscious here at the scene. they are now at the hospital. some of them have life-threatening injuries. the chp shut down the freeway for a while for their investigation but the lanes are clear now. as those three victims fight for their lives, the chp will have the same questions that their families likely will have, which is why was that woman going in the wrong direction? was alcohol a factor, or is there any reasonable explanation to why this tragedy happened? in fremont, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> i wonder if they'll be able to determine that, too. thanks so much, kris. well, you may have felt it. the usgs says a 3.1 magnitude quake hit just before 4:00 this morning centered in emerald hills, just west of redwood city.

5:20 am
moisture moving through sonoma county and marin but pockets not that straight line of red. i take you then into sunday morning and that's when we'll see our next round of heavy rainfall, so do keep that in mind. you'll have opportunities to get outdoors on saturday, especially through the morning hours across the board, before this next wave comes through. when we meet back here on monday, just tracking some light activity and it's all going to push out of here by monday night. so when all is said and done we're talking about maybe 7 to 12 inches, up to a foot of rain high atop mt. tam. that is a lot of rain from one system atmospheric river is the reason why. if you want to know more about the science we'll dive into that in my next report. first you might be trying to get to work. right now say pretty good time, mike. >> it actually is. we got to work. what am i laughing about? fremont this is part of the work we're talking about weather and traffic tying together. the wind is pushing this flag around in fremont, seeing a lot of activity on our cameras or the cameras showing the effects
5:21 am
of that wind as well. right here, fremont southbound 880 does move smoothly past the truck scales. look at our maps moving as far as the volume of traffic through fremont and into the south bay, northbound routes pretty okay except for 280 where we have debris reported at lawrence expressway. something in the roadway so there must be a traffic wreak going on. chp didn't declare it. slower sensors just developing now. they should clear in the next few. i'll track those for you. north of the san mateo bridge we're showing a little bit of slowing likely because of the wind across that span. both sides the peninsula and east bay where the smooth flow of traffic to the be with, on either side, your bay bridge toll plaza has no backup right now. there's an earlier crash on the upper shore freeway, richmond vallejo, carquinez bridge and benicia bridge moving smoothly north of the golden gate bridge watch for the effects of rain but the live camera in san rafael shows you it hasn't hit the camera just yet. let's look at some

5:31 am
forcing that flooding, and here's what we're talking about when it comes to the flash flood watch, it's in place now for sonoma, napa and marin county and it will stand all the way through the day into tonight. here's what we're expecting, here's a time line, just find where you live on the map here, over the bay area and this is where your area has the best potential of seeing any sort of flooding, localized flooding. 7:00 a.m. from 10:00 a.m. sonoma south to marin. from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. along the peninsula, east shore and tri valley. between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. it will be downright dangerous to be travel around the south bay. we'll keep you updated on the the staus of the rainfall but in combination with the heavy rain we're also expecting some fierce wind. we've seen sustained speeds in san jose at 22 miles per hour. wind advisory is in place. and what happens is, you'll be nice and calm probably when you leave your home and then you get out there on that roadway, and you start to get hit by those very strong wind gusts.
5:32 am
speaking of which, if you're trying to get to work this morning not too bad right now. getting home will likely be more problematic for you. >> yes but the wind will play a factor as we've shown from some of our cameras. i picked the oakland camera because it was moving around a lot, rooftop camera 13 stories above the roadway catching the wind here at high street north of the coliseum. folks headed to the bay bridge backup along the left and the right approach starting now. dry roadways here. we're talking about the area north of the going going, that live shot we showed you in san rafael did have rain on the roadway, looking at green on the san francisco map, some sprinkles north of the san mateo bridge but the traffic flow nice, it's friday light for that volume, guys back to you. >> thank you, mike. as the rain starts to pick up, people are getting ready to protect their businesses and homes and "today in the bay's" stephanie chuang live in tiburon where they're still feeling the effects of last storm. >> reporter: that's right.

15 minutes ago it sprinkle a few minutes. the shopping center a little bit damp so not at all anything compared to what we had in december when the entire parking lot was covered in water, and that as a result did shut down this store here, champagne salon and day spa, you can see closed remodeling due to the flood damage. more than two months later the repair work continues here. this is real money lost for people. very real impact caught on camera in december when you see the water flooding into the store, causing enough damage to force the closure due to a pump failure in the area that also flooded nearby homes including pablo castro's, who says he still has to fix his flooring. >> we had to take the plywood out, too, and i had plastic underneath, and so we let them dry and then we're starting to cover them and install plywood subfloor again. >> reporter: people everywhere in the area including mill value yu are stocking up on sandbags
5:34 am
as well as those in healdsburg, flooding devastated several downtown businesses in december. the hope is that the sandbags won't have to be tested and marin county public works crews say they hope it doesn't get to this. they'll be ready to respond to clear thinking that might cause water backup. so far nothing substantial can be posted. live in tiburon, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> thank you. i want to take you over to redwood city. people remember the storm very well. in december it flooded the area. they've stacked up sandbags and packed up valuables preparing for another flood. the water was so high in december crews had to use boats, some people walking through knee-high water just to get their stuff out. meteorologist christina loren has been tracking this storm, and predicting it for quite some time. if you haven't already download the nbc bay area app and it will

5:36 am
highway patrol it was about 12:30 this morning when the driver driving faster than the speed limit hit that oncoming dryer. the force of that impact split one of the vehicles in two. it was a truck, then her car burst into flames. >> upon the collision, the cab of the truck, the quad cab, the quad cab of the truck completely separated from the chassis and the we had of the truck. it landed probably 10 to 15 feet in front of the chassis. >> reporter: chp says the driver who was going the wrong direction died at the scene. it is believed that she is a woman. the three victims she struck were pulled from the truck, only one of those three men was conscious at the scene. they are now at the hospital. the scene was shut down for a while for that investigation, but the lanes are clear now. as those three men fight for their lives, their families will have the same question the california highway patrol does, which is, why was that woman driving in the wrong direction
