wet weather headed toward the bay. a live look across the bay area this morning, not a lot of heavy rain but everyone is about to get soaked. >> including us. good morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm scott mcgrew. sam brock is off today. our "today in the bay" team is not. we'll tell you what you need to do and where you need to go. meteorologist christina loren is of course tracking the storm. >> good morning to you. i just want to start to give you an idea of how much rainfall is coming to the north of the north bay. at this point all of this activity the heavy stuff still north of sonoma county but starting to intensify and what's going to happen as we progress throughout the next couple hours, is we will connect with the atmospheric river and for us that's going to equate to these light rainfall showers turning over to heavy bouts of rain. so do bring your umbrella with us, getting a little bit of light activity to the south of the golden gate bridge but not much. i showed you that time line just moments ago, let me show it to you through a map form right

now. 10:00 a.m., heavy rain across sonoma county, starting to see that heavy stuff push into marin county. also expecting everything to stay to the north of the golden gate bridge until we hit about 11:00 a.m. today. between 11:00 and 12:00, everything starts to press south. this is the big band that could produce localized flooding. it will sit and dump rain and then we stop that clock for you getting into 6:00 p.m. tonight, things starting to let up a touch as we get into our evening newscast, everywhere except the north bay. periods of rain starting to get going as we speak and in combination with the heavy rain we have gusty wind in the forecast for today especially through the high elevations. rain will continue overnight and start to let up for saturday and another heavy round expected for sunday, round two sunday into monday. we'll talk more about that coming up in my next report. first check your drive, see if there's any impact from the wind. we'll check with mike in a

moment. back to you scott and laura. >> all right. so busy tracking everything, thanks so much, christina. this is what it looked like in the north bay the last time we had rain like this. this is just a couple of months ago in december a mess. streets turned into lakes and plenty of damage went along with it. >> "today in the bay's" stephanie chuang is live in tiburon. people are not taking any chance this time around. zbrt owner of champagne salon and day spa here we spoke with the owner after the floods in december. she said maybe at least $40,000 in damage. the sign closed for remodeling due to flood damage. the sandbags in place just in case it gets bad here again and that is what happened back in december when you can see from the surveillance footage that the water made its way into the store, flooding it enough to force the closure, maybe a couple inches inside, due to a pump failure in the area that flooded nearby homes.

we just spoke with the produce manager here at the paradise food in the plaza who w.h.o. remembers business owners having to salvage their merchandise. >> that's a big issue with this building. the tide is right here when the water comes up at high tide if it's really bad it floods out the whole parking lot. >> reporter: and now you're looking at some video from novato during december's flooding. homes had a little bit of damage there, some outside sheds mostly due to backed up drains. live in tiburon the boxes piled high, the repair work still happening at this store. marin county public works crews say they will be ready, on standby, hoping to clear things up so that there's no water backup and no more damage. again hoping it doesn't look like it did back in december. live in tiburon this morning, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> thanks, steph. of course staying in the north bay, not far from tiburon, a live look at the drive through

san rafael this morning. the big "s" curve, traffic moving smoothly so far this morning, picking up just a little bit. the roads are going to get slick out there, though. want to allow a little extra time. we'll check in with mike inouye in minutes. >> slightly to the south, a live look at the golden gate bridge this morning. bob redell in san francisco, he says right now heavy drizzle is falling. we'll check in with him at 6:15. >> everyone is preparing crews in the south bay have been busy trying to clean out storm drains before the rain moves in, but in some areas it's ohm delaying the inevitable flooding. caltrans says certain underpasses and intersections are more prone to flooding. low-lying areas are typically a problem especially in santa clara county. >> a lot of the highways down there, the freeways are very close to the water table, so they have a very high water table so every time it rains heavily the water table rises and you get flooding. >> if you run into a flooded area, especially an underpass, don't drive through it.

it can be deceptive. your car could get stuck in high water. >> and mobile homes that flooded during december storms are under edge again. >> understandably. people packed their valuables preparing for another flood. the water was so high in december fire crews had to use boats and rafts for evacuations. others had to just wait out, put their kids on their shoulders trying to go knee deep to try to save some of their belongings. microclimate weather coverage continues in a few moments. for personalized forecast at your finger tips, all you have to do is download our nbc bay area app and track the raindrops right to your doorstep. people on the peninsula woke around to shaking at 3:45. the magnitude 3.1 earthquake hit west of redwood city. viewers pacifica to to menlo felt it.

janelle wang tweeted about it. pete in redwood city says it felt like a car hit his building. there's no reports of injuries or damage this morning. >> what a wake-up, way to wake up. it is 6:05. update to breaking news this morning, investigators trying to figure out why a driver went the wrong way, causing a fiery wreck on interstate 880. one person was killed, three others rushed to the hospital. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live along the freeway in fremont. kris? >> good morning to you. yes, the families of those victims will have the same questions the chp has this morning, which is why was that woman going so fast in the wrong direction on the interstate. this is a result of that mistake. chp says the wrong-way driver smashed head on into a truck headed in the right direction near the thornton avenue onrarp headed south around 12:to this morning. on impact the car burst into flames and was soon engulfed. the truck that car hit did not fare much better. chp sergeant says the impact

split the truck in two with the driver and passengers inside. >> upon the collision, the cap of the truck, the quad cap, quad cap of the truck completely separated from the chassis and the bed of the truck. it landed probably 10 to 15 feet in front of the chassis. >> the chp says the driver who caused the crash died here at the scene. the three victims she struck were pulled from their truck. only one was conscious at the scene. all three are possible. they're investigating whether she was speeding, whether alcohol was a factor and just why she was going in the wrong direction on the highway. in fremont, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> just tragic, thank you. a man accused of molesting an 8-year-old girl inside a 99 cent store in hayward is expected in court today. carlisle villazon is a registered sex offender, convicted of arresting a girl in walmart in san leandro in 2010,

and he was just released on parole. detectives say his tracking bracelet placed him at the 99 cent store at the time of sunday's crime. >> it is 6:07 right now. back to our microclimate weather alert this morning, we give you a live look outside. you see the clouds hovering in the distance. the storm interesting because it's changing minute by minute. christina is tracking it for us in the north bay. >> starting to see light showers south of marin county into san francisco, but the heavier stuff is starting to develop offshore. i'll show you your radar in one moment. i start with your wind which is cranking and half moon way sustained at 30 miles per hour. gust this is morning on the valley floor up to about 45 miles per hour. so do take it easy out there, especially if you drive a high profile vehicle. tractor trailer, suv type, anything that's high mike and i

both drive. the wind intensified, 28 miles per hour sustained in oakland, and the radar shows you what's going on out there. at this point starting to see that heavy rainfall really press into sonoma county. over the past two hours we start to see the atmospheric river connection and for us, all this green starting to develop at our latitude here in the south bay will be here before you know it. next couple hours things starting to ramp up and it's rush hour. mike will have a busy morning ahead of him, expecting the heavy rainfall to start up in the north bay between 7:00 and 10:00 and once this thing gets going it will be moving quickly. 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. heaviest rain along the peninsula, south highway 19. 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., heavy activity in the bay.

i'll be here until at least 2:00 and maybe stay for tonight's shows depending on how much rain and aftermath we have coming in. stop that clock for you at 12:00, you request see another visual representation of that rain coming in. it will be widespread. plan on bringing your lunch with to you work. you don't want to be out on the highway with conditions like this. you might not make it back in time. one hour is not enough for lunch mike. i don't know if you agree with me. >> i totally agree. you can't nap -- we're looking toward san rafael, no napping or dozing off wide awake this morning. you notice on the right side, there's that little outlet there where sometimes trucks pull over and you can see the wet pavement there. that affects sprinkles in the north bay rain and hitting the north bay as we look at the shots here let's look at the map. green highlighted area north of mill valley through san rafael and novato where the rain has

come through and slick conditions, wet enough to cause spinouts. watch the traction there. reports of a tree and wires down, sir francis drake at pine ridge road. not on the freeway itself but a note for conditions up there as well. the bay bridge a smooth flow into and out of san francisco but green indicating the rain having hit this as bob redell reported he got hit with a little rain. the bay bridge toll plaza metering lights are on. there's the backup, even on a friday we have the backup but no problems out of the maze or off of the east shore freeway. back to the map the same area the bay bridge toll plaza coming over from the oakland side from our maps looked like a smooth drive right here and we're looking at the rest of the bay. no problems across the san mateo bridge at the bottom of your screen on either side, oakland and the peninsula moving smoothly. we'll show you the rain continues to come in and the south bay still moving nicely northbound 101 bottom of your screen and little slowdown, typical of this time of morning even on a friday with the burst of traffic that comes in. >> 6:11, new job numbers just

at 6:14, all southbound lanes of 880 in fremont are open following a deadly crash. investigators say a woman was driving the wrong way on 8890 when she slammed into a truck. she died. three people in the truck were seriously injured. investigators say the plane that crashed into n taiwan rost both engines before it went down. 15 people survived this crash. eight people still missing. suspended nfl star adrian peterson back in court today, accused of disciplining his son with a wooden stick. we have new job numbers just

released within the last 45 minutes. 250,000 jobs added in the last month. this is the 12th straight gain of jobs over 200,000. 12 months in a row. unemployment ticking up slightly. economists revised earlier estimates of how many jobs we added to the economy back in november. they're now talking about a number of 414,000, the biggest in 17 years. do watch shares of twitter today, they soared last night after the company reported earnings that beat forecasts even though user growth is still slowing. new reports emerge that the cyber attack at health insurer anthem, the company under harsh criticism, reportedly not encrypting the social security numbers from 80 million customers, both former and current. and now a new report from the "wall street journal" says authorities have evidence the attack may be linked to hackers backed by chinese governments as

well. it is 6:15. let's take a live look outside the bay bridge from emeryville this morning. right now the bulk of the rain is actually falling north of san francisco, but the city will get its own soaking and very soon. "today in the bay's" bob redell is in the mission district this morning. how are you looking there, bob? >> reporter: we saw a little bit of rain earlier, heavy drizzle that's gone but we are starting to feel the winds. i know it's hard to tell you about it is starting to get breezy out here and the national weather service issued a wind advisory for the bay area from 4:00 this morning until 4:00 tomorrow morning. so talking about winds that are sustained at 25 to 30 miles an hour. you don't have that yet. we just got the breezes but they're also talking about gusts that could hit 50 to 60 miles an hour especially in the upper elevations which could end up repeating the scenes that we had in last december during those

two storms where we saw a lot of trees coming down, knocking out power lines and hitting people's homes. they're trying to cut down those big limbs to make sure that that doesn't happen or at least minimize the risk. in the mission district one of the lowest lying areas of the city and during the storms last year they saw water in the streets as deep as two to three feet so what they've been doing, you can see the contractor has a box out here. they've been still fixing these businesses that had drywallisch us. you can see a business right here, the stable cafe, still under construction, still shut down and yet here they are, they have their barriers back up with their fingers crossed that whatever rain does fall during this weekend's storm that it doesn't flood, nowhere near as much as it did the last time, about six to eight weeks ago. reporting live in the mission, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> everybody is preparing, thanks, bob.

>> let's check outside in the south bay, a live look at san jose where it's going to stay much drier, so as we talk about a microclimate weather aulert - >> it will change throughout the day depends on where you live. 6:18, thank you for waking up with us. probably the mornings you don't want to spare any time getting out the front door especially in the north bay and as this wind starts to really increase it's going to make for probably a rough commute if you drive a high profile vehicle. watch out for debris flowing across the highways and even in your local areas. streets could see downed branches and trees. now this wind is starting to whip and you can see really see that by our contour. over the past couple hours the wind has ramped up. you can see here half moon bay started at 24 miles per hour this morning, now you're up to 33 miles per hour sustained. so we do want to take you through the day, show you what's happening right now and what's to be expected. like i said, this is set back three hours.

we told you we're going to hit that atmospheric river tap, just light activity for the first part of the morning. you can see what's developing offshore, there it is, the atmospheric river getting its act together and for us it will slowly move over the bay area was he head throughout the day today. 7:00 to 10:00 is the time frame for sonoma county south to the top of the golden gate bridge. it will move south into san francisco, and down the peninsula between 10:00 and 1:00, and we're expecting the heaviest time frame between 1:00 and 4:00 p.m. today, right here in the south bay. wherever you're headed this morning, wherever you're going to be this afternoon have the umbrella handy. i stop the clock at noon. widespread heavy rainfall across the board. 2:00 the front is draped through san jose, tri valley along the east shore, that's going to be downright dangerous commute home for some people. by 6:00 some spotty activity, the south of sonoma ptacounty, getting that rich moisture up there. i take you into the 9:00 hour

tonight, just looking towards green at that point, but still could see some good aftermath from the storm system, it's going to dump rain and bring us fierce winds. you do want to keep that in mind. scott and laura have been paying attention to the forecast, because hey, just getting home today could be problematic for us, but you want to get home. you want to get into that weekend. saturday looks good for your outdoor plans and the heavy rain returns for the first part of sunday. everything should clear out of here, though, as we head through about 12:00 on sunday through the rest of the night, just some light activity lingering for sunday night into monday and we'll have all your storm totals and we meet back here on monday, expecting to tally up potentially seven inches to 12 inches of rainfall in the high elevations of the north bay. we will keep up you updated. good morning, folks. we'll look at the san mateo bridge, two things. first of all the smooth drive and the volume picking up a tad bit. it's friday. we have a lighter volume around the bay. look at the very clear, crystal clear view of the high-rise from

the hayward side, now let's shift our focus to our cameras on the peninsula. the foster city camera, good volume of traffic coming westbound from the hayward side. the wind is kicking in on the peninsula side. that will be a factor for your morning commute. coming across 92 the volume playing a factor slowing you down just a tad bit, nothing unexpect dld or the dumb barton bridge. the peninsula, san mateo, redwood city moving nicely for 101 and 280. same thing on the east bay. little slowing traditional from the hayward toward fremont because that's the commute direction but lighter for a friday. now as we move to the south bay, san jose, cupertino, campbell looking at northbound routes through the areas. san jose sees 101 and 87 slowing into downtown. nothing unusual about the friday pattern. the blotchy green patches are where the road weather index our traffic and weather systems share the data and tying together saying you will likely find at least damp roadways.

it's to be for a spinout or slick conditions so be careful out there. as we widen out the rest of the bay, into real problems. friday shows you a lighter volume of traffic, thank goodness, there are gusty winds out there, keep that in mind. the bay bridge toll plaza as we zoom into the toll plaza area and north of the bay bridge we see the backup at the toll plaza causes the red, a smooth drive into the city and north of there, mill valley, san rafael, novato looking at 101 with damp conditions as well as we saw from our san rafael camera but we'll check that golden gate bridge camera and we see the roadway here is dry. we don't have any windshield wipers yet but gusty winds at times and as bob is reporting from san francisco he got hit with a little rain already. it is come down, folks. back to you. we have breaking news this morning, according to the campbell police department the 911 system there is down. calls are being answered by the county while the phone company is trying to work out this situation and fix that issue. no word if that's related to the weather, but rain or shine, we can do some good news where

at the bay bridge. >> the rain drops will start coming in a couple hours really. >> the key is to take your umbrella with you. don't be fooled. meteorologist christina loren is providing a lot of updates all the models she's been analyzing them as the storm moves in. she joins us now for a look at the time line. >> yes, we're really just watching the radar at this point. the models are pretty good up until three hours before the storm's arrival. at this point we are pretty confident that we're going to continue to see that heavy rainfall, watching the radar, which is what i love to do. raw data tells the story, that computer models just can't tell. this is what we're watching coming to wind speeds, pretty strong, up to 28 miles per hour in oakland, 13 in san francisco and 33 miles per hour sustained in half moon bay. getting gusts to about 60 miles per hour through the high elevations. you really want to travel cautiously. for you. you can see what's going on outthere. just a slight spotty snow, so

far this morning. look at what's developing offshore, talking about heavy downpours on the way and the atmospheric river connecting and this is a plume of steady moisture that extends to the hawaiian islands. this will bring in the heavy rain later today. this is what we're expecting where you live. as the thing starts to get going, 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., heavy rainfall beginning from sonoma county all the way to marin. so we have not yet hit that heaviest time frame. 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. everything spreads south along the peninsula and 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. the peninsula to the south bay, that's where it's going to be the most active here. as we get into your weekend, all important weekend finally arrived. temperature on saturday 64 degrees, light showers, then by sunday that heavy rain returns also looking towards some thunderstorm activity as we head throughout your sunday. there's a wig event happening this weekend on saturday, america's got talent auditions, santa clara convention center. if you want to see yourself on

nbc bay area this is your chance to do so. headed out early, 9:00 a.m. count on showers, bring your umbrel umbrella. i know a guy great for this show, mike inouye. >> i hear they've canceled the auditions because they heard i wasn't attending. i'm going to juggle -- oh, maybe i won't juggle. let's juggle some shots out here. the bay bridge shot i've looked from our emeryville camera. you saw during the clip, sorry the tease a couple seconds ago the camera was shaking quite a bit. it dies down for a second or two, checking for the effects of a crash. i don't see the big rig we talk about here. check from our other angle at the bay bridge toll plaza showing you folks headed in toward the camera, we don't see the big rig they're talking about but i see larger trailers. everything seems to be moving smoothly. map shows you earlier crash reported at the bay bridge looks like it's cleared from the fast track lanes. the wind was evident from the camera drive. slower drive developing at the top of your screen. this is friday, a lot lighter

from the maze oakland for 580 and 808. we will azoom out. the bigger issue is in the north bay. the green highlighting where the rain is falling, slick 101 through san rafael out of novato toward mill valley and the golden gate bridge, not yet hitting the bridge on the south side where our camera is. keep in mind there were sprinkles in the city where bob redell is standing. the greater bay area shows a nice smooth easy drive, typical of a friday at this time. san jose a little bit of slowing northbound 101 coming up toward 680 and 880. the butting of the slowing on the east bay is right on the left side of your screen, 80 hayward toward fremont, a little bit of slowing, the earlier deadly crash is over in fremont. the activity is cleared from the roadways. we have much more on that story. >> it's a tragic situation there. one of our top stories of the morning. all southbound lanes of 880 in fremont as mike mentioned are open following a deadly crash. investigators say the woman was driving the wrong way on 880,

when she slammed into a truck. she died. three people in the truck were seriously hurt. investigators say the plane that crashed in taiwan lost both engines before it went down. 15 people survived that crash. eight people still missing. a 12th straight month of at least 200,000 jobs added, even though unemployment rate rose to 5.7%. the u.s. job market is getting closer to full health. >> it was another strong day of jobs. see how that's impacting markets as the dow industrials barely moving. there's a conflict of course, laura. there's worry the fed will more quickly end that easing money, quantitative easing so the better the economy gets the less likely the fed will help and that's where you're seeing this morning on the dow. >> keep our eye on the interest rates as well. 6:35. within days president obama will ask congress authorize military action against isis. some believe that may be the next step towards sending in ground troops. >> american planes this week

a microclimate weather alert this morning, taking you out live to the bay bridge t will be perhaps a tough commute home, stick around, we'll have lots of information about that. >> a pretty shot though, nice. every day in california there's a hazardous materials spill or leak. most are minor but there are some that are serious, even deadly. >> vicki nguyen is here to continuing our week long series into disaster preparedness.

>> good morning, we asked the state for data on just how many spills or leaked happened last year, both here in the bay area and statewide. we found on average there are 19 hazardous materials spills every day in california. everything from gas tank explosions to toxic chemicals seeping into the soil, water and air. almeida topped the list of bay area counties for the most hazardous spills in 2014 with 299. contra costa 296. the most common spilled was petroleum followed by sewage. first responders face serious challenges dealing with hazmat spills mainly geography. state emergency leaders say california has strong mutual aid programs. crews from large counties regularly train with those from more rural areas so they can coordinate their response when there is a hazmat situation. you can see our entire report right now and we've broken the data down by county so you can learn what hazardous materials

here to help you get ready with what you need to go and get out there safely this morning. let's beginning with meteorologist christina loren tracking the storm. good morning. >> good morning to you. we have a flash flood watch in place. right now this is for sonoma, marin, and napa county and that will stand until 6:00 a.m., and that's tomorrow morning. they extended this. we also have a wind advisory in place for parts of the bay area, but what you will notice about what those cars just did you do not want to cross any sort of water where you cannot detect the depth. downed trees certainly possible as a wind advisory in place for the whole bay area. winds frequently seeing the 50-mile-per-hour wind gusts. it's the calm before the storm. we showed you the radar picture, you saw what was developing off the pacific ocean. as it comes in it will force the wind with it, increasing wind speeds. here is the deal. mike's already tracking some very fierce wind on some of his traffic cameras. keep that in mind.

it will get gustier as the day goes on. the red and orange is heavy rainfall slated to slam the bay area throughout lunch time. as this thing comes in it forces the wind. the wind will intensify before the heavy rain arrives here in the south bay. i move you forward in time, stop that clock at 2:00 p.m. today, that's when we are expected to see some pretty rich moisture pass through the south bay, santa cruz mountains as well. we are expecting downed trees that could lead to power outages, if you lose power where you live you'll likely have 4g or your wireless connection and for us, check out our website nbcbayarea.com. we're going to keep you updated on social media all day long. it's a big part of our job these days. 6:00 p.m. tonight you can see here things start to lighten up. not as heavy at that point but getting heavy rainfall and with the wind combined with the saturated ground, the chance for downed trees actually heightened at that point. i take you through tomorrow morning at 5:00 a.m., just some light activity at that point. we move you forward in time to

about 2:00 tomorrow, that's within you'll be able to get outdoors for a few hours. 2:00 p.m. saturday before we get another round of heavy rainfall on sunday morning. the heaviest expected between about 8:00 a.m. sunday and 11:00 a.m. then we'll see a little bit of a break as we head throughout the second half of the day sunday, light rain continuing into monday. keep that in mind. let me show you temperatures not expecting temperatures to drop that much. this is not a cold system, which is why it's able to pack in so much moisture. we have a chance for thunderstorms saturday night into sunday. that's where we're going to be watching for especially through the high elevations of the south bay, the santa cruz mountains could see this up in the north bay as well. monday into tuesday, things start to change. showers will lighten up. we'll meet back here on monday and be able to give you an idea as to how much rainfall we accumulated where you live and then by tuesday the sun comes back out for a brief break before we get more rain towards the middle of the month. i don't want to break your heart, mike, but that could be valentine's day so we'll talk to

him and check your drive with him in a moment. right now back to you, scott and laura. >> christina, thank you. this is what it looked like in the north bay the last time we had rain like this. just a couple of months ago in december, it was certainly a mess. streets just turned into lakes and there was a lot of damage that went along with it. >> "today in the bay's" stephanie chuang is live in tiburon this morning. people not taking any chances this time around, steph. >> reporter: hey, good morning to you both, scott and laura. as christina has been saying the wind is the story, kicked up in the last hour. it sprinkled for a few minutes around 5:15. since then we've gotten nothing. the ground is back to being dry again, that's how little we got. very different picture of this parking lot here at the shopping center in tiburon eight weeks ago when it was flooded and the owner of champagne salon and day spa estimates at least $40,000. sign closed for remodeling due to flood damage. more than two months later the repair work continues here this is real money lost.

you see the water flooding into the store in december, causing enough damage to force this closure due to pump failure nearby that flooded nearby homes. we spoke with someone who works in the plaza this morning who says the damage was hard-hitting for business owners here. >> here on this side, the water came up so high that it soaked the dry wall and the walls and ruined a lot of their merchandise and they're still recuperating. i don't think the inn busineend opened yet. >> reporter: people everywhere in the area including mill valley are stocking up on sandbags and those in healdsburg where flooding devastated several downtown businesses in december. back here live the sandbags that are here in tiburon hoping they don't have to get to this point. public works crews are ready. they say they're on stand by in case anything gets to that point. live in tiburon, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> thank you, steph. let's take another peek outside the bay bridge this

morning. things not too bad at all right there. be prepared before you go out the door because no matter where you live, you are going to feel the impact of this wind and rain >> let's check in with "today in the bay's" bob redell live in zpran. rain drops falling on your head? >> reporter: we had some maybe about an hour and a half ago, heavy drizzle, not much since, laura and scott. we're starting to see and feel as the wind is starting to pick up a little bit. you can see it in the trees and clouds and beautiful morning sky over the mission district in san francisco, you can see the clouds are coming in. we have a wind advisory in effect put on by the national weather service and this is in effect until 4:00 tomorrow morning, and what they are predicting are sustained winds later today of 25 to 30 miles an hour, and upper elevations gusts as much as 50 to 60 miles an hour. if you're in an area where there are tall trees around hopefully someone trimmed the limbs but that's something you want to be aware of. we saw this during the last few

storms in late december and early december, where we had trees coming down, knocking down power lines and of course, causing problems with people's roofs as far as those coming down on top of the homes there. back here in the mission district, around folsom between 17th and 18th, one of the lowest lying areas of the cities during the storms late last year they saw two to three feet of water. they are still repairing the damaged buildings inside here, and of course you can see some businesses have put up these barriers, sandbags, these are metical plates with rubber seals to keep the water out, hoping maybe this time they won't have as much water. there could be flooding. the thought is maybe it's not the two to three feet they saw about two months ago. reporting live in the mission, rob redell, "today in the bay." >> everybody's got to prepare. in redwood city peeping live in mobile homes that flooded during december storms are >> the stacked up sandbags,

packed valuable away preparing for another flood. the water was so high in december, firefighters had to use boats and rafts for evacuations. some were able to make it out through knee deep water to save their belongings. crews are clearing out storm drains, delaying the inevitable flooding. certain underpasses and intersections are more prone to flooding. low-lying areas a problem especially in santa clara county. >> the highways down there, the freeh ways are very close to the water table. they have a high water table. every time it rains heavily the water table rising and you get flooding. >> if you run to a flooded area at an underpass, for godness sakes don't drive through it. your car could quickly get stuck in some of the high water. >> it happens so quickly it's hard for people to judge. good tips for everyone on the road today, mike. >> of course allow more room

between the car in front of you that will reduce accidents as well. the clouds and the rain coming in from the north, but so far the bay bridge toll plaza much calmer now, right there off of the 880 overcrossing is where i did finally find some flashing lights. they cleared the roadway and the area. that one crash is clear but we'll show you the maze coming out of emeryville, the traffic flows smoothly and west 80 headed toward the bay bridge and we oftentimes see a slowdown at the berkeley curve, not the case because it's a friday, a little bit lighter. rooftop camera in emeryville getting gusts of winds from time to time. we'll look on the map over toward the 580/24 interchange blocked by a building. that's the first crash that cleared. second crash may be much more of a deal west 580 approaching 24. reports of a crash with aboverturned vehicle just came in to chp. four of the five lanes are blocked and we see slowing coming north out of the piedmont area. that will be a factor here. if you can, choose between 580

and highway 13, take that highway 13 over to 24 and it looks like you should be able to get around that backup. i'll track that closely. as far as the weather goes the north bay did see early rain and there was green along 101, things calming down as the system is coming down toward the golden gate bridge. we'll keep an eye on that as your morning commute progresses. friday is pretty much the pattern around the greater bay area. you see down the peninsula, no big surprises. san jose slowing north 280, north 101 off 680. 808 southbound with the volume building no, big surprises there and no problems for the tri valley. we are also looking at the san mateo bridge with a slightly slower drive. as we get live looks out there, we'll show you the conditions across that section. here's the foster city camera looking at the high-rise, you might get caught with a gust or two catching our camera. wind is a big factor for your morning commute. san jose and the south bay look at this, a nice beautiful

sunrise as the volume starts to get to the freeway to flow north from tully past alan rock where the worst of the slowing is right now. back to you. >> thank you. an update to breaking news. investigators are trying to figure out why a driver went the wrong way causing this fiery wreck on interstate 880. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez live along the freeway in fremont. kris, one person killed, others rushed to the hospital. >> reporter: yes, and the same questions that the california highway patrol has this morning are the questions that the families will have and that they'll have to live with for a long time. this is the aftermath of that violent crash, a terrible mistake. chp says the woman who was driving the wrong way smashed head-on into a truck, heading in the right direction near the thornton avenue on-ramp around 12:30 this morning. on impact her car burst into flames and was soon engulfed. the truck that that car hit did not fare much better. chp sergeant says the impact split the truck in two, with the driver and passengers inside.

>> upon collision, the cab of the truck, the quad cab, the quad cab of the truck completely separated from the chassis and bed of the truck. it landed probably 10 to 15 feet in front of the chassis. >> reporter: the chp says that the driver who caused the crash died at the scene. the three victims she struck were pulled from the truck, one of them was unconscious here at the scene. all three are now at the hospital. the chp says the woman was driving fast and now they are investigating whether she was speeding, whether alcohol or drugs played a factor and how she came to be on the freeway going in the wrong direction in the first place. in fremont, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thanks, kris. more breaking news this morning, campbell police department's 911 call system is down because of a power outage right now emergency calls are being answered by the county. no word yet on when everything will be back to normal. well, new this morning, people on the peninsula woke up

to some shaking around 3:45 this morning. the usgs says a magnitude 6 -- 3, thank goodness, point-one earthquake hit west of redwood city. no reports of injuries or damage on this 3.1 earthquake. new this morning, berkeley police looking for a gunman responsible for a drive-by shooting, it happened about 9:00 last night near bancroft and bonner street. no one was hit by the gunfire but police say the bullets did cause some property damage. well a man accused of molesting a little girl inside a hayward store is expected in court today. carlis carlisle villazon is accused of sexually assaulting an 8-year-old girl at a 99 cent store sunday. he is a registered sex offender and convicted of molesting a girl in walmart in san francisco 2010 and just been released on parole. dino rinetti helped catch

villadon after the walmart crime. >> i happened to look up by the tv and by looking at the surveillance i knew it was him. i'll never forget that guy as long as i live. >> the sheriff's department used data from the man's tracking bracelet and determined villazon was at the 99 cent store at the time the crime happened sunday. he was arrested wednesday at his job in union city. >> a 12th straight month of at least 200,000 jobs added, even though the unemployment rate rose to 5.7%. u.s. job market is getting closer to full health. people in the north bay on the peninsula have got the sandbags out ahead of today's storm, several inches of rain expected across the bay area. >> that's right. christina has been tracking the storm for us. >> yes and i will continue to track the storm for you, as we head throughout the morning hours, probably through the afternoon as well. and really if you can, meet back here with us at 11:00 to 12:00, when the action is really going to be going across the bay area, and when we meet back here on monday, these are the totals that we're expecting now through

sunday, 2 1/2 to 5 inches in the north bay on the valley floor, upwards of seven inches in the high elevations of the north bay, that's mt. tam, 1.5 to 2.5 an inch and a half to two and a half in the south bay and two to four on the east shore. on the peninsula and up to san francisco. so come back here monday, we'll see if the numbers check out. >> i'm sure they will. let's check on the roadways, traffic and weather tied together. right now the build for friday we're showing a smooth drive but gusts of wind across the bay bridge is what will really affect you right now. look at your map on the approach a problem in the east bay circling there west 580 around the highway 24 interchange, four of your five lanes blocked, big slowdown oakland toward the 580/24 interchange. you can use 24 toward the bay bridge, take highway 13 up there, that will get you around the crash. i'm getting more updates from chp as they arrive, tracking on twitter as well. the north bay a smooth drive despite the early rain we saw.
