>> he's 22 years old. some people feel he's come out of nowhere. he's exploded. a number of nominations. he's also said in one category he's up against beyonce. he said, if i win, i feel like i'll give it to her. >> i think he'd probably do it. it would make it. >> we'll talk more about that. we want to get to the top story. a crippling effect on the non-stop storms in the west. the rain not expected to let up soon. nbc's reporter is following it for us this morning. >> reporter: lester good morning. this small town 30 miles outside of seattle was battled by wild weather for three days. roads were washed away, rivers are rushing and more wet weather is on the way. first hammered by rain then swamped in three feet of water. the community is now caked in mud.

thereseeding, but the damage is not. >> i need to get this off my driveway or it ends up in my house. >> reporter: after flash flooding trapped ten people here, this waterlogged region is expecting more rain today. >> we're surrounded by it. >> reporter: small landslides pushed mud to road forcing some services to close. whipped by the pineapple express, dumping rain from washington to california. >> never seen it like this before. i walk every day and it's just crazy. >> reporter: overnight saturday sloppy sleet made roads rough along i-80 near lake tahoe. sheets of water and bolts of lightning in sacramento. trees impaled cars. for liz and her daughter vanessa vanessa, it doesn't get closer

than this. >> she said that she felt something go through her hair. now that i'm looking at it how lucky was that? >> reporter: believe it or not, many people they're lucky in this region. although this area is prone to slides the pineapple express could have delivered more wet weather here. another one is on the way later today. >> miguel thanks. we're tracking that weather in the pacific northwest and the big storm that a lot of people are bracing for in the northeast. your bag is packed and you're ready to go. >> i'm on my way out the door. first out in california yes, we do have almost a foot of rain in some areas where miguel is. 11.09 inches of washington. parts of california, over 12 inches of rain. as miguel said we're looking at more to develop later today. here's how it's shaping up. we have this moisture off of the pacific. we're in a low. there's not a whole lot of heavy

rain. it is going to stream in. even some lightning flashes right out through here. that's indicating that we are going to see torrential downpours and the possibility of more thunderstorms, especially across california. we could see another two to three inches with as much as five inches. that's why flooding and mud mudslides are a concern. on the east coast, we have this snow. in albany we've had over an inch of rain. you can see how quickly it coats the roads and makes them slippery. catches drivers off guard. we have cars off the side of the road in the ditch there. this is the situation we're going to see as we go into tonight and through monday and into tuesday as well. pockets of heavier snowfall. we could see as much as a foot to a foot and a half in boston. north of the city we could see as much as two feet of snow. it's crazy to think how relentless it is. >> we'll be ready. >> here we're okay. just a little ice.

>> which is why you won't stick around. >> exactly. thanks. let's turn to a tragedy for olympic champion bruce jenner after he was caught in a car crash in a california highway that left one person dead. we have more on that. >> hi there. it happened along the pacific coast highway in malibu. jenner was injured. police are investigating to see what caused the chain reaction crash. >> reporter: pictures from the highway show a horrific scene. nearby inside. it happened just after noon on saturday. accordsing to the california highway patrol four cars were involved. including jenner's cat lad escalade towing a dune buggy at the time. police say traffic was moving slowly when a chain reaction

accident started. jenner's escalade rear-ended the white lexus which veered into oncoming traffic and was struck killing the driver of the lexus. the crash closed the iconic california highway for several hours. jenner can can be seen picking up pieces of his suv after the crash. >> he fully cooperated with the investigation. did not appear to be under the influence. and performed a field sobriety test without any problem. he also volunteered to provide a blood sample to prove or disprove whether there is any alcohol or intoxicants in his . >> reporter: police deny reports the paparazzi may have been to blame. it is the latest fodder for the former olympic, now the fixture on keeping up with the kardashians. >> the family is rallying around bruce. >> photographers have dogged jenner. he is transitioning to live as a woman, says reports. his long hair and fingernails

pictured in the tabloids. >> he's making headlinesnes every day. we're hearing that he is just devastate devastated. >> reporte there have been no charges. police say jenner passed the field sobriety test. be looking at the cell phone records of the drivers to see if anyone was on the phone or testing. a rep only said he was not injured. police are saying paparazzi wasn't to blame, but they were right there. they got pictures of the moment of impact. even pictures of the victims. didn't seem like they were rushing to help. just taking video. >> thanks. we have a couple violent shootings in two different states overnight. >> good morning. we begin in pennsylvania where police arrested a 17-year-old in connection with a crowded small shooting. shoppers were sent running after the gunman opened fire saturday night. three people were taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds. >> we believe that one of the three people shot was a targeted

individual. it was not a random. we have evidence that leads to that. >> reporter: and it was a violent scene in an atlanta suburb saturday after police say a man shot six people killing four including his ex-wife and several children. the gunman then apparently killed himself. police in georgia dropped an arrest warrant against bobbi brown. it extended from a traffic violation. this weekend, her grandmother was seen leaving the hospital where the family is keeping vigil, after she was found unresponsive in a bathtub last weekend. it's the three year anniversary of her mother, whitney houston's, death. >> wildfires destroyed many homes. it burned 11 square milesnd forced two towns to evacuate. a word about brian williams who has been under scrutiny under

stories he's covered. on saturday he issued a statement. it has become papfully apparent to me that i am presently too much a part of the news for my actions. i have decided to take myself off of my daily broadcast for the next several days. transasia is grounding more flights and training more pilots in wake of last week's crash. investigators are trying to see why the plane didn't produce any thrust. rescuers are still looking for the bodies of three missing people. one of the luxury car makers are issuing a recall. the announcement from jaguar land rover north america is 2013 and 2014 range rover sport and jaguar 2012 to 2014 for parking

>> jordan authorize the use of force against the terror group. we're joined by chuck todd this morning. >> good morning. >> i know you're speaking with secretary of state kerry about this. we want to hear more about what he said. >> first of all, the coalition is strong more committed than ever particularly in the aftermath of the burning of the jordanian pilot. the resounding reaffirmations of commitment throughout the arab world have been heartening and strong. >> secretary kerry mentioned this committed coalition. the u.s. is shouldering a large part of that. in terms of support at home the white house is expected to seek congressional approval for military action in the coming days. how much support is there? >> i think there's quite a bit of support broadly. the question is when you write

this resolution and remember what we have here. the president has two ways to do what he's doing now legally without congress without asking for a new resolution. the war powers act itself or they believe they can justify this legally based on the initial war resolution after the 9/11 attacks, dealing with iraq and afghanistan. but the president wants this new resolution. i think when they start trying to write it can you write it broad enough that allows the president to go after isis in countries we haven't declared war on but narrow enough that it doesn't seem to give the executive too much power? that's where i think this is going to get caught up in a lot of heated back and forth. they may end up doing nothing. saying the president can just use the old resolution. >> ukraine is also a major focus. you addressed that with the secretary as well and the u.s. role there. things are heating up. there's some pressure for the u.s. to provide further support, beyond the aid that's already

been pledged. what about drumming up support for that? what are the changces of dealing with these both at the same time? >> there isn't a lot of disagreement between republicans and the obama administration on this one. you have the new secretary of defense. hasn't been confirmed yet, but he says he's in favor of more arms. john kerry in his interview with me he didn't get specific but said he was essentially in favor of helping ukraine deal with this problem with heavier artillery. the split is actually between our western european allies. it's germany and france. i think the aid is going to come but it depends on what happens at this peace conference that germany, france and russia and ukraine will hold on wednesday. >> before that we'll be joining you later this morning for "meet the press" for more of that interview. >> thanks. a major new turn in the murder case featured on a hit

>> reporter: it could be a second chance for a man hon spent nearly half of his life in prison. his case captivating millions and brought to national attention with the wildly popular podcast "serial." >> but someone is lying. and i really wanted to figure out who. >> reporter: he was convicted of strangling his ex-girlfriend in 2000 when the two were were high school students outside baltimore. now a maryland court has overturned a lower court's ruling granting syed's request to appeal that murder conviction. >> mr. syed has languished in prison for 15 years with really no hope. now he has a glimmer of a chance. >> reporter: syed's lawyer argued his legal team during the trial was ineffective. now there is new evidence -- one of his former classmates is willing to testify she saw him in a library at the time of the murder providing an alibi. neither prosecutors nor lee's

family returned our request for comment. syed's current attorney says saturday it is the first step in a pretty long process but we are extremely happy. in the podcast," serial," "this american life" journalist retraced every aspect of the real life whodunit. >> as for physical evidence there was none. >> reporter: poking holes in the prosecution's case questioning the credibility of the state's key witness speaking to the defendant from his prison cell he consistently maintained his innocence. >> man, i will no reason to kill her. >> reporter: the ruling is syed's best chance at a new trial. >> the key issue in the case is whether this new library witness is credible or not. >> reporter: now, a 15-year-old case is getting a new look in court with the fate of a young man at stake. for "today," kristin welker nbc news washington. >> this is somewhat of a revolution in that this is i think the first podcast that's become part of the popular culture. i could be mistaken on that psh.

good morning. 6:26. micro climate weather alert. i'm vicky nguyen alongside anthony slaughter who has a check on that micro climate alert. >> it is going to start to be very active across the bay. heavy rain pushing into the bay. really brilliant colors. that denotes heavy rain. rainfall rates up to 1 inch an hour. that is about to move into san francisco, the peninsula. even towards santa cruz. within the next few minutes, that will start at the

coastline. the first round of heavy rain expected to move through the day. around 11:00 this morning, the atmosphere is going to become a little more unstable at least to support some thunderstorm activity. as we move through the afternoon, heating of the daytime, we see this weather in the central plains. we are talking about the potential for thunderstorms, even lightning and thunder as we head through the afternoon. this first round will move through in the next couple of hours. don't let your guard down. it is going to stay very active through the evening hours. >> we know you will be back at 7:00 with our hour by hour forecast. with this winter weather, pg&e crews say they have about 2000 personnel helping out with the storm response cleaning up some of the damage left behind. in berkeley, a 90-foot tree came crashing down in three back yards. mother nature also knocked down trees in san francisco like this one. pg&e said it opened an emergency

operation center on friday to help handle the response z we are prepared. we have the material and the people in the right place to deal with that storm. it looks like it may be not as severe. >> crews from oregon and washington are in town to help prepare for today's storm. pg&e is working to restore power for customers still in the dark. officials say. >> to be prepared and to have a backup plan for if your power goes out. the storm is to blame for this fire. gusts knocked down a live wire that caught this downed tree near the fire. to a follow-up on a story we first brought you yesterday. firefighters could not get to her in time. now, they are looking into what caused a deadly fire at a south bay mobile home park. 80-year-old jenny mess sa tied after the fire broke out at her

two feet of snow expected for some of the hardest hit areas. on the pacific northwest, the rain is expected to continue for at least another 24 hours. it's already brought flash floods and dangerous mudslides. one person is dead after a crash in california that involved bruce jenner. police have not yet said who is to blame for the pileup. the power ball jackpot is going again. no one won last night, so it's up to $450 million. the next drawing is on wednesday night. still to come, a smiling and happy toddler whose life got a little brighter thanks to dedicated ser jon edd surgeons. we'll talk to the boy's parents about a life-changing surgery. love is in the air as we heat things up in the kitchen. this husband and wife will join us for a great valentine's day

we're looking around 11:00 to midnight that's when the heavier snow will start in boston. we'll see icing for the monday morning commute in and around the tristate area and it'll taper off into tuesday morning with lingering snow. as far as snowfall is concerned, we're looking at 15 to 18 inches to the north of boston thanks to ocean enhancement elsewhere, picking up a foot across parts of new england. we could also see 1/10th of an inch or 1/4th of an inch of ice. that'll be for your monday commute. it'll be a good sunday morning to you. i'm meteorologist, aen on this any slaughter. we are tracking heavy storms. you can see that down the coastline towards santa cruz and eventually move inland. at times, we will sea lightninge lightning

romantic have some alcohol, italian coffee. >> that's are great. they're fluffy and light. >> how do you start? >> okay. so you have egg white and egg yolks, ricotta, parmesan and pinch of salt. here's your egg whites. fluff them up. then you incorporate it all together. this is kind of like the result. >> your wife's going to like this. >> everything goes in here? >> yes, everything goes together. >> these are actually almost done. >> what texture does the ricotta give to the -- >> the ricotta makes it super nice. one of the things that we try to do also because we have daughters at home we try to really kind of like go for the sweets but stay light. ricotta makes it nice and fluffy and keeps it healthy. the lemon zest adds a little bit of a novelty to it.
