coming up on "early today," new england is under siege from yet another major winter storm. snow on top of more snow. and this as the west coast recovers from the pineapple express. high level talks at the white house ahead today for president obama and germany's angela merkel. on the agenda, russia and isis. the biggest night in music. we've got the winners and the most talked about moments from the grammys. plus, new details from the fatal car crash involving bruce jenner. tributes pour in for a giant of college basketball and much more on this busy monday, february 9th. "early today" starts right now. good morning. i'm dara brown. right now two powerful storms on the move locking onto both

coasts. out west a rain system soaked northern california. more than 12 inches since thursday. washington state, relentless rain triggered flooding and mudslides. but it's not over. more rain could fall until tuesday. let's get over to meteorologist bill karins. bill what has this forecast been about? >> a parade of storms. right off the coast, strong winds on the oregon coast, 60 miles per hour gust, could do damage there. we've already picked up two inches of rain over the weekend, san francisco was great, northern california got nailed. we did not get much of anything around l.a. and san diego areas. up in the northwest we're still getting hammered and it's still pouring. we've picked up two to four inches. look at this storm, cranks up strongest winds coming on shore now in areas of coastal oregon. as far as the rain goes much of it will be along i-5 corridor snow levels in the mountains pretty high out there. this storm the latest in line and the last in line.

we do expect things to improve in the west coast shortly brf thank you, bill. now to the northeast where states are dealing with another winter whack. in the bull's eye, new england. the possibility up to two feet of new snow. bad news for boston already 55 inches of snow. this new threat closing schools until wednesday. >> these storms that we're getting is unprecedented. we've never seen this type of snow here in the city of boston. >> all this snow is frustrating travelers at area airports. over 1,000 flights are canceled. right now to boston and msnbc amanda, you're out on the roads. what's it like out there? >> reporter: good morning, dara. city crews have been working around the clock to keep city streets and sidewalks clear. they have been able to do so with relative success considering they are expecting one foot to two feet of snow. this is already on layers of record snowfall here in boston.

though officials have warned about conditions here they have not issued travel bans meaning the streets are open and we are seeing traffic pick up some in boston commons. i'd like to take you out here in boston commons. we're at the heart of the city. the snow has really been picking up here. it's been piling up on top of layers and layers of snow. so while we're able to walk freely we've been seeing people commute to work even the roadways have been clear, but it's been piling up. the problem is they can't figure out where to put all this snow. they are running out of places to place it. so we're just prepping for the next rounds of snow to come down. >> reporting live from boston. thanks so much amanda now, isis and russia the focus at the white house. president obama holding high level talks with angela merkel

continue the anti-terror offensive in iraq and syria. nbc's tracie potts is live in washington. good morning to you, tracie. what is the latest on this fight against isis? >> the latest we understand the white house is working on that authorization for use of military force. and will probably send it here to capitol hill sometime this week. president obama and chancellor merkel talk strategy as u.s. fighter jets help jordan fly 20 strikes a day against isis. jordan denies isis claims that one of these bombs killed american hostage. [ speaking foreign language ] >> friends and family are hopeful. >> her final quote before she left for as long as i live i will not let this suffering be normal. i will not let this be something we just accept. >> reporter: the u.s. admits it will take more than airstrikes to defeat isis. >> there have to be ground

troops involved to win this victory. >> iraqi troops trained, recent video of a jordanian pilot burned alive will have an impact. >> i think if anything the lighting on fire of this jordanian pilot will now galvanize, i hope the arab nations to fight isis including on the ground. >> it will be one of those moments that creates additional unity. >> reporter: critics say targeting isis in iraq and syria alone is not enough. >> we need a much broader strategy that recognizes we're facing not just this tactical problem of isis in iraq and syria. >> reporter: the concern the isis ideology is spreading. the thinking there is we don't just need to be fighting isis on their home turf in iraq and especially syria but also as their ideology spreads around the world in other places including making sure we track down followers at home in the u.s. >> tracie potts, live in d.c. tracie thanks so much. the clock is ticking as we get closer to a potential shutdown at the department of

homeland security. after february 22nd, secretary jeh johnson says the agency would have to furlough at least 30,000 workers, unless lawmakers pass a funding bill. one big road block? some in congress are using this as an opportunity to attach riders that would end president obama's executive action on immigration. on sunday, secretary johnson had this to say. >> people in congress want to have that debate about immigration reform, let's have that debate, but don't tie that to funding public safety and homeland security for the american people. we need a fully funded department right now. >> and check out this new body cam video. two heroic florida police officers rescue a man from a burning car. in an edited version of the footage supplied by police, the two scramble to break into the vehicle while fire and smoke creep closer. >> get out of the car! >> look out. >> hey! get out of the car. >> get out of the car, come on. >> he's in the car.

>> come on, unlock the door, unlock the door. >> come on, get out. >> come on, buddy. >> we have him out. we have him out. >> hey. >> police say the driver was intoxicated and later treated for minor burns and smoke inhalation. alabama's top judge is now trying to stop same-sex marriage from going into effect today. late last night, alabama chief justice roy moore issued this order banning probate judges from issuing marriage licenses to gay couples and telling them that they didn't have to follow a federal judge's ruling declaring the state's ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional. judge moore, you'll recall back in 2003, defied a federal judge's order to remove a statue of the ten commandments from the courthouse. as of last night, the supreme court had not suspended to alabama's request to stay the lower court's decision requiring it to permit such marriages. meanwhile "new york times" reporting a baptist pastor

agreed to conduct the state's first same-sex marriages. alabama could become the 37th state to legalize same-sex marriages, but the first in the deep south to do so. the world's most talented singers and musicians came together for the annual grammy awards. ♪ ♪ >> a cdc kicked off the show. the aussie rockers pumped up the crowd with "highway to hell." >> the biggest winner -- >> stay with me. >> sam smith. >> lonely hour sam smith, stay with me. >> i want to thank the man who this record is about who i fell in love with last year. thank you so much for breaking my heart. >> the man who sings of heartache was all smiles. sam smith "stay with me" scored four grammys, including record and song of the year. but album of the year went to -- >> morning phase, beck.

maybe it will help you become a person folks would like to have around. dolan ended his response to say to start rooting for the nets because the knicks don't want you. ouch. and the sports world is reacting to the death of legendary unc coach smith. he passed away. charlie scott remembers the impact he had on his players. >> while you were in school, he was your coach, he was your disciplinarian, he was your teacher. when you got out, he was your friend, he was your father, he was your mentor. >> michael jordan played under smith for 1981-1984 and said in his statement other than my parents, no one had a bigger influence on my life than coach smith. he was more than a coach. he was my mentor, my teacher, my second father. smith coached 36 seasons for the tar heels winning two national championships along with an olympic gold medal. he retired with more wins than any other coach in men's division 1 history.
