good morning. coming up on "early today" a wild high-speed pursuit, drivers terrorized. police pulling their weapons. and infamous convicted wife killer drew peterson charged in a murder for hire screen. and astronaut neal armstrong's secret space stash. it's tuesday, february 10th. "early today" starts right now. a very good morning to you. i'm richard lui. we start with a wild and dangerous ride. a carjacking on the streets of l.a. on the ground cell phones catching the action. reports of a stolen car

attempting to evade cops. the suspect crashed but then carjacked a woman's vehicle. >> he told me to get out. >> then he hit the freeway, but the move back fired for him. jammed with vehicles the suspect again ditched his car. cameras caught him not once but twice trying to carjack vehicles. police fired. his condition is unknown. gay marriage is legal for the second day in alabama. not everyone supports it. justice clarence toms and anthony scalia said the high court should have granted alabama's request to put that ruling on hold until the court rules on gay marriage nationwide in a few months. according to the press, justice thomas criticized his colleagues as quote, looking another way as another judge casts aside federal court laws.

thomas and his partner were the first male same sex couple chosen to share the ceremonial first kiss during home coming of uss san francisco. the warship spent seventh months in the pacific. the driver in the accident with bruce jenner did not have a driver's license according to the "l. a. times." sheriff officials said because of the tire marks on the road jenner tried to brake before hitting the lexus. all vehicles in the crash are being investigated. they are looking into cell phone records. explosive claim against wife killer drew peterson accused of trying to hire a heat man. the target? lead prosecutor behind 2012 conviction. he allegedly tried to hire someone between 2013 and december of last year. in 2012 peterson was convicted of killing of his first wife kat leap savio and sentenced to 38 years.

he's also a spectacular in the disappearance of his fourth wife stacy peterson. she vanished in 2007. the new charge against peterson carries a 30-year sentence. storms caused over 7,000 flight delays yesterday. in snow slammed chicago, there are 13 snow shovel deaths. outside of boston a man is fatally hit by a plow in a parking lot. nbc has more on boston's winter misery. >> it's a sight that's become all too familiar. boston battered again car after car, buried under mounds of snow. for those who are attempting to get around dangerous conditions. >> it's way more slick. way more slick. when you slide, you slide no matter what. there's no way to control it. >> these commuters forced to get off their train and walk in frigid temperatures when it broke down south of boston. unrelenting snow has fetaled the mettle of hardy new englanders. in the past several days multiple major snow events.

january 27th up wards 22 inches. another 16 inches less than a week later. then nearly 7.5 followed by a foot of snow in total. a record 60 plus inches and counting paralyzing parts of the region. with historic amounts of snow on the ground there's not enough space to put it all. melters which use flame blowers to melt the snow can't keep up. the city may be forced to dump snow in the harbor which is normally off limits. so much snow removed, 10,000 dumptrucks it would fill the home of nepgd super bowl champions patriots gillette stadium 90 times. winter doesn't end for six more weeks. >> bill karins that's a lot of snow my friend. >> they didn't have hardly anything in december. they had half an inch in december. this has all been since the new year. 23 inches was the latest storm. that ranks as their seventh to last snowfall in history.

this is on the heels of a blizzard that gave them their sixth highest ever. this is incredible numbers, a short period of time. this season already ranks as ninth all time. move up the list. two more chances of storms thursday night and friday another one sunday. they could threaten all-time snow records for the city of boston which go back into the 1800s. we're talking impressive stuff. as far as the rain goes it's still raining a little especially in the higher elevations. so far so good as far as rainfall. a lot of areas didn't get what they needed. we'd like to have more but looks like we'll shut off the hose for a little bit. a pretty good storm off the coast. this will not move on shore a lot. the rain and leftover showers. as far as portland and seattle go there's still a chance especially afternoon showers. hopefully they will get breaks in the clouds too. cloudy for a while. most of this rain is up there into the cascades. not a lot of it is making it inland. one thing interesting with the forecast very warm lately new mexico up to colorado.

60 degrees today in denver. this was jefferson, colorado yesterday. blue skies, in shorts. it was 70s over the weekend, 60s yesterday. it just goes to show you, not everyone is suffering from this horrible winter or wet winter if you like the too. i think you'll see breaks in sacramento, down to l.a. well, richard, it's been a fascinating period of winter weather. i mean a lot of people can't relate to that much snow that fast. >> drought situation in the west looks better? >> tiny bit. >> just because of the bad winter they have had. thanks very much bill karins. a treasure trove of space stuff hidden for years in neil armstrong's closet.

cases in illinois as well as a new one in georgia bringing total to 18 states and washington, d.c. nbc's tracie potts has more. >> reporter: richard, good morning. good morning, everyone. the cdc tells us they now have confirmed cases of measles here in washington, d.c. and 17 states. they are now tracking these cases from where many of them started, disney land all the way to the east coast. the cdc is now tracking 121 cases of measles across the u.s. most but not all of them are connected to disneyland. measles is now in the northeast, new jersey delaware and the nation's capital. >> measles is literally a plane ride away. >> that's a doctor from the cdc, she testifies today along with the pediatrician whose letter went viral. his kids were exposed at disney but cannot be vaccinated. a new pew research poll 80% of americans feel the vaccine is

leading the news from nbcnews.com, suspect jesse matthew charged with murder of hannah graham. that from nbc affiliate wbir. the body of the 18-year-old university of virginia student was found in october more than a month after she went missing. 33-year-old jesse matthew was previously charged with abduction with intent to defile in the killing. he pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and two other felony charges in unrelated 2005 sex assault case. police and prosecutor plan to speak about the case at a news conference this morning.
