eavesdropping on you today, tuesday, february 10th, 2015. >> announcer: from nbc news, this is "today" with matt lauer and savannah guthrie live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> good morning and welcome to "today" on a tuesday morning. take a look outside at the snow flurries and then there is boston which is just getting pounded again. >> there is unfortunately more on the way. not one, but two storms. >> an enormous amount of snow this year. >> the weather is the top story. investigators on the scene of a terrible accident on the new jersey turnpike. while the record-breaking string of storms is taking a heavy toll, as we mentioned, on the city of boston, the city's mass transit service and schools shut down again today. let's go to boston resident dylan dreyer. she has the latest for us.

good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. might as well move back in. i lived here for six years and never have seen snow pile up like this in the city. we had 68 inches of snowfall in over two weeks. now that this storm is pulling away, icy conditions are expected to impact travel all across the northeast. already this morning some are blaming the ice as a possible cause of a major pileup on the new jersey turnpike last night that's left one dead and dozens injured. freezing rain may have been behind a pileup on the new jersey turnpike monday night involving more than 15 vehicles, including four tractor trailers, two box trucks, and a full bus. investigators were on the scene overnight but haven't determined the cause of the fatal accident, though one witness tweeted the roads were like a skating rink. across the northeast this morning, the big dig is under way after a massive four-day snowstorm. >> i'm crazy about snow, but it's pretty bad when you can't

take your dogs snowshoeing because it's too deep. >> i'm so sick of it. >> reporter: the biggest question, what are people doing with the snow? digging out cars. i see some cars haven't been dig out maybe since the first storm. >> there isn't a place to put it. that's the problem. >> reporter: in just 17 days, boston set its fastest snowfall on record, reaching an astonishing 68.4 inches, beating the previous record of 44 days. cancelling more than 4,000 flights, costing airlines for the past three storms an estimated $75 million, and more than $700 million for passengers. no school in boston this morning. the city's eighth snow day this year. and with the historic snow amounts being removed across the state, 10,000 dump trucks in boston alone, enough to fill the home of the super bowl champion new england patriots' gillette stadium 90 times. so back to that question of what do you do with all of this snow? well, dump trucks are being

loaded up, and the snow is brought to snow farms, where 400 tons of snow is melted an hour. they're also making an exception to the rule and allowing some of the snowing to dumped in the harbor. they say the safety of the residents is at stake, so we need to put the snow somewhere, especially, al, if more snow is on the way the end of this week and into the weekend and beyond. >> that's right. and it looks like that's coming. dylan dreyer, thanks so much. here's the latest. right now we have remnants of this system. it's causing icing conditions through washington, d.c., baltimore, parts of virginia as well. school closings and delays being reported. here's the next system coming in out of the plains. we watch this make its way during the day, this afternoon, into tonight, tomorrow morning it sets up. by thursday, this clipper is off the coast, reforms, intensifies. so the snow threat from long island to maine again. folks who don't need it. we're talking about anywhere from 3 to 6 inches of snow, some

areas locally could pick up to 9 inches of snow along new england's coast. here comes the first arctic air mass behind that clipper, bringing in temperatures 10 to 20 degrees below normal. our reinforcing shot as the second clipper comes across. look at these temperatures. by saturday morning, 8 in new york city. 12 in detroit. zero in minneapolis. sunday it's even colder. it continues to make its way to the east, even to the south, as far south as atlanta. washington, d.c., 17. then this weekend, we're watching this storm develop, and it looks like, again, new england, more heavy snow. eastern long island into new england. we could be again talking between these two systems a foot to a foot and a half more snow. >> and they don't need it. al, thank you so much. let's turn to some tense moments for passengers on a flight from philadelphia to houston. the pilot of that plane forced to land without nose gear. nbc's tom costello covers aviation. tom, good morning to you. >> good morning. this was american airlines

flight 1825 operated by u.s. airways, a regional jet. it left philly at 7:25 p.m. 52 passengers and four crew members on board. upon arriving in the houston area, the crew realized the nose gear was not properly deploying. that forced the pilot to make an emergency landing at houston's george bush intercontinental around 10:00 p.m. central time. the plane came down, as you can see, without its nose gear. emergency equipment on the scene to assist. finally coming to a rest on the runway. one passenger was transported to a local hospital with nonlife threatening injuries, we're told. all of this happening rather quickly, but everyone off the plane. one passenger's son tweeted, this is ridiculous, not happy about this. the airline and the faa will now investigate why this landing gear failed to deploy. matt, back to you. >> good job on the part of that pilot, tom. thank you very much. meantime, president obama could ask congress as early as today for new legal authority to use military force against isis. this as the terror group

releases a new propaganda video and the fate of an american being held hostage remains uncertain. nbc's keir simmons is following developments from amman, jordan. >> reporter: good morning. the king of jordan putting together a growing allia confront isis. meanwhile, hearing from jordanian government sourc that a baaalttalion has been sent to the border. but the prime minister said he doesn't think his forces are ready for a ground offensive. overnight, jordan's queen appealed to the leaders of the middle east to help defeat terrorism. while syria's president assad made his own television appearance saying in a bbc interview messages have been exchanged with the u.s. coalition fighting isis. >> there's no direct operation. through a third party, more than one party.

sometimes they convey message, general message. >> reporter: and isis itself released another propaganda video featuring a british hostage under duress, claiming to show the destruction wreaked by assad's forces in syria's aleppo. every side in this conflict battling for hearts and minds as more air power arrived in jordan. the pilots here keep training as talk grows of an iraqi ground offensive against isis. they may need this training because only ground offensive will need more air support. and caught in the middle of all this, kayla mueller, another isis hostage. her parents holding vigil since isis' unconfirmed claims friday that she'd been killed. her community in prescott, arizona, desperate for news. >> these are our kids. kayla is, you know, our young person. >> reporter: what they were going through is just unimaginable, savannah.

we're hearing that the united arab emirates has this morning bombed isis targets from that base in jordan. meanwhile, they are just praying and hoping that their daughter is safe. >> indeed. keir simmons, thank you very much. meanwhile, tamron is in while natalie is on assignment. there's a new major fight in alabama over same-sex marriage. >> absolutely, guys. good morning. good morning, everyone. the u.s. supreme court on monday refused to block same-sex marriage in alabama, but probate courts in roughly two-thirds of the state's counties declined to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. nbc's justice correspondent pete williams is in washington with this one. >> tamron, good morning. in alabama it is local judges who give out marriage licenses, and many are declining to do it after the chief justice of alabama's supreme court weighed in. some judges gave out marriage licenses anyway on monday, bringing gay marriage to the heart of the deep south, even though roy moore, the chief justice, told them to ignore a federal court ruling that struck down the state's ban on same-sex marriage.

in 2003, he defied a federal court order to remove a ten commandments monument from the supreme court building. he was removed from office but re-elected three years ago. the u.s. supreme court rejected a last-minute appeal from alabama. the justices will take up the issue of gay marriage nationwide in april. and by declining to put those marriages on hold in alabama now, the court appeared to be signaling it will >> pete, thank you very much. the measles outbreak has now spread to three more states and washington, d.c. the total number of confirmed cases now stands at 121. senate lawmakers are scheduled to discuss the situation today on capitol hill. it will be the first time that lawmakers have taken up the measles outbreak publicly. officials say the resurgence is mostly caused by parents who are declining to vaccinate their children. cheaper, better robots will replace human workers at a faster pace over the next decade, pushing labor costs down. now, that's according to a new

report from the boston consulting group. it predicts that investment in industrial robots will grow 10% a year through 2025. in the united states, robots will cut labor costs by 22%. the report says only 10% of jobs that can be automated have already been taken by robots. a carjacking suspect is in custody at a hospital this morning after leading a los angeles police on a high-speed chase that came to a very dramatic end when officers opened fire. so police say the chase started after a report of a stolen car. when they tried to pull the suspect over, he took off, blowing through intersections and red lights. he collided with at least five vehicles. after one of the crashes, the suspect pulled out a gun and forced a woman from her vehicle. >> he told me to get out of my car. he told me, like, twice and just opened the door.

>> i could hardly guarantee if she would have hesitated he would have shot her. >> so later in the chase, the suspect got stuck in traffic, so he got out and tried to pull at least two other people from their vehicles, and that's when the officers shot him. he was take on to the hospital. his condition is not known. you hear the fear in the description from those witnesses. very frightening situation out there. >> scary. sign of the times that so much of it is captured on video. tamron, thank you. let's turn once again to mr. roker. >> we're watching this clipper come across the planes. that's going to bring more snow to the northeast. we have wet weather along the mid-atlantic states. out west, more showers in the pacific northwest. high surf advisories going up for southern california. we're going to get to your local forecast coming up in the next 30 seconds.

nbc national correspondent peter alexander is in charlottesville. peter, good morning. >> reporter: matt, good morning to you. this continues to be just an awful case. you'll remember it was last fall that hannah graham disappeared, and this morning our affiliate here in charlottesville, virginia, is reporting that jesse matthew jr. has been charged with her murder. that announcement expected at a news conference a short time from now. two sources are confirming to our nbc station wvir that jesse matthew has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of hannah graham. police say matthew was seen with the uva sophomore on this surveillance video last september just before she vanished. matthew, who's 33, was previously charged with abduction with intent to defile in connection with graham's killing. he's not yet entered a plea for that charge. graham was 18 years old when she disappeared last fall, prompting an intense month-long search. her remains were found october 18th, less than ten miles from where she'd last been seen

alive, after a night out with friends. >> hannah never forgot to put others before herself. that's why everyone loved her so much. >> reporter: police say jesse matthew allegedly abducted and sexually assaulted another woman who was walking home from a grocery store in fairfax, virginia, back in 2005. the woman survived and helped detectives come up with this sketch. in november, matthew pleaded not guilty to all of the charges in that case. the fbi then used dna evidence to link the fairfax case with the 2009 disappearance of virginia tech student morgan herrington. her remains were found three months after she disappeared the night she attended a rock concert at uva. >> the earth has shifted, but it doesn't change a lot for us in some caysways. our bedroom is still empty upstairs. we're still not going to have the grandchildren, the wedding. >> reporter: matthew still has not been charged in herrington's murder, but he could stand trial in the 2005 sexual assault case

before he could be tried for the murder of hannah graham. and for now, jesse matthews remains behind bars in fairfax, virginia. savannah, we'll be inside when that announcement is expected to take place less than 45 minutes from now. >> all right, peter. thank you so much. >> meantime, we have some breaking news here. the family of kayla mueller, the american woman held hostage by isis, is now confirming that she has died. nbc's chief foreign affairs correspondent andrea mitchell has the latest. >> good morning. this sad news. the president has just issued a statement expressing his profound sorrow over the death of kayla mueller. and this coordinated with the family. apparently they did get a communication from isis over the last few days, is what i've been told, and that was then authenticated that it was, in fact, proof of death. officials will not tell me, savannah, exactly how she died or how long she's been dead. they still are trying to determine the cause of death. so there still is that open issue about the isis claim of

last week that she died because of a jordanian air strikes. u.s. and jordanian officials have been dismissive of that, claiming they were not striking isis targets in syria, anywhere near where she was last believed to be. most poignantly, the family has now released what they received from her, from another hostage, who had been released. as you know, the foreign hostages were released. this is a letter kayla wrote to her family last spring from her cell. she wrote in this letter, in part, i miss all of you, as it has been a decade of forced separation. i've had many a long hour to think about all the things i could do, and she writes to her brother, she writes specific facts. so it's clearly her handwriting, and this was her letter. that's how they knew she was alive until at least last spring. >> the more we learn about kayla mueller, the more our hearts break. she was an incredibly

breaking news is in antioch where a man's bizarre and threatening behavior shut down a major route in the east bay during much of the busy morning commute. good morning and thanks for joining us. >> now, the antioch bridge has reopened. it had been closed since 8:00 this morning after a man with either a gun or a knife took to the bridge on foot. there you see him running, and at one point, he threw it down whatever it was he had, and started running across the bridge. police officers were there to convince him to surrender peacefully, but he climbed over the railing, dangling several times. a little over an hour ago, police were able to grab the man
