i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> two veteran san jose police officers are on paid administrative leave the morning after shooting and killing an armed robber. this happened last night on sherman avenue near west alma avenue. bob redell thrive right now. bob, officers say the man charged at them with a knife. good morning. >> reporter: they said there were two officers involved, both with the gang suppression unit. they were responding to a 911 call of a man trying to break into a home in this neighborhood just after 5:00 last night. when they arrived they found the man outside the home armed with a weapon. >> the subject had a knife and charged at the officers. they order him to drop the knife and he did not. they fired with their duty weapons.

>> heartbreaking to know it's so close to home. >> reporter: one of the shots hit the subject. both officers have seven, eight years experience with the san jose police department. they've been questioned by their counterparts, their colleagues, and placed on paid administrative leave, which is normal when an officer is involved in a shooting. police investigators have not released the identity of the dead man, nor why he targeted this particular home here on sherman avenue. reporting live here in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> okay, bob. thank you very much. 6:02. palo alto police looking for a man who groped another man inside a macy's bathroom. the victim says the man in this surveillance photo peeked over the urinal partition and grabbed him from behind. it happened yesterday inside the macy's at stanford shopping center. investigators believe same man could be linked to another case where someone took a picture of a woman inside a restroom at a coverley community center. new details this morning in a bizarre hit-and-run investigation. police say this man, alex

alcazar, is a person of interest in last week's deadly crash in milpitas. a car collided with a garbage truck but the drive of that car kept on going. when first responders followed the trail of debris, they found the car on fire and the body of a 14-year-old girl just outside of the vehicle. people living in one of san jose's nicest neighbors demanding help after a rash of home burglaries. there were 82 burglaries in the almaden valley neighborhood last month. help is on the way. four truancy abatement officers will be funded to help get more criminals off the streets. the mayor says he wants to give police officers a raise to boost retention. >> okay. a warning for b.a.r.t. riders this morning. you may have been exposed to measles. someone with the virus exposed thousands of people after riding the train from lafayette to san francisco for days not knowing he had it. >> "today in the bay's" stephanie chuang at the montgomery street b.a.r.t. station. not the only exposure concern

here. >> reporter: that's right. good morning. top priority for public health officials is to make sure those who claim in close contact with the person who with measles knows about the situation. a lot of the people here riding b.a.r.t., this person got off the montgomery street b.a.r.t. station and walked a short distance to work, a few hundred feet on the corner, 1 montgomery street where the linkedin san francisco offices are. exposure different places for this situation. the period of exposure was last wednesday, thursday, and friday. measles can linger airborne for up to two hours even after the infected person leaves. that person also ate at e&o restaurant and bar last sunday night. all employees have been vaccinated there and the doors will stay open. >> they have said that there's essentially no risk at this point and continuing to stay open and doing business a we do.

>> reporter: a public health notice posted yesterday in the window of the sf linkedin office bidding warns the resident who works there did contract measles and those closest to that person have been i.d.'d by officials. they will contact them with instructions. vaccinations are 95% to 99% infected. there's a good chance this person did not get vaccinated. they don't know how he contracted measles. symptoms can take time to appear so it may be several days before we know if anyone else has been infected. stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> riders asked to be vigilant. thank you very much. so far there are 15 confirmed cases of the measles here in the bay area. alameda county has the most with six followed by san mateo and santa clara. right now, billions of dollars of goods have nowhere to go with west coast ports closed for business. the port of oakland is the fifth busiest port in the country and

one of 29 west coast seaports that will be closed for four days. this come after contract talks between dockworkers were postponed. alameda county may hike water costs because of capital improvements than drought-related costs. tonight's meeting is 6:00 at the alameda county water district hours in fremont. also happening today, president obama comes to the bay area. but unlike his previous visits he's got a new game plan. >> yes, he does. cybersecurity on the brain. air force one scheduled to land around 5:30 this evening. tomorrow he'll be hosting a summit on that topic at stanford university. it marks the first time that a sitting president in 40 years has made an official visit to the university. the president will leave town on saturday morning. >> and he's coming to town, boy, gorgeous weather. let's take a peek outside before we take a look at our

microclimate forecast. christina is right here. >> good morning. probably getting pretty excited about the weekend coming up. we'll tell you what's going on for the lovrps and the singles out there. we won't leave you out. after all, we were all single at one point and we know what it's like. temperatures right now mostly in the 40s, 45 degrees in san jose. we're at 51 degrees to kick off the new day in san francisco. and we're looking good. a little warmer for today as we get into this afternoon, your temperatures at noon, high noon, 66 degrees on the peninsula, 67 degrees on the east shore. then we'll round out the day at 71 in san francisco and 74 degrees on the peninsula. so just gorgeous conditions. as we get into this afternoon, our air quality not suffering. let's tell you about what's going on around the bay area as we warm you up. we'll hit the peak of this warming trend as we get into saturday, valentine's day. so it's a little early for this, but tulip mania opens on

slowing, north 87, a crack at kirkner. it's moved over to the shoulder but that was enough to kick off the slower drive. not for a few more minutes kicking off early because of that. cam nor guadalupe parkway heading into downtown. we'll zoom out to the maps and show you the rest of the silicon valley. all the drivers from to 101 and 280 from san francisco and the south bay. over on the east bay we have a little slowing kicking in again for the tri valley typical about this time of day. same for hayward southbound 880 as you're coming off that castro valley y. new crash on 8th street just off of 880, typical slowing through hayward and san leandro. the bulk of the slowing, 680 through the same stretch just south of 580. move your map north toward the bay bridge and the north bay. concord, walnut creek interchange, 24, 680, toward the

welcome back. good thursday morning. i'm meteorologist christina loren and we have a gorgeous day shaping up as offshore winds drive our skies nice and clear. for us, we'll see a warming trend like you wouldn't believe if you're just joining us. and that is going to peak on valentine's day. more on your numbers in just moments. this is fremont southbound, more commuters heading down towards mission. in san jose a crash for highway 87 and more slowing for east bay. also a look at today's top stories at 6:14. two san jose police officers are on paid administrative leave this morning after shooting and

killing a man who had a knife. he broke into a home on the outskirts of town. plitt political analyst say the man charged at them with that knife. russia and ukraine have reached a cease-fire deal to begin this weekend. previous truces have fallen apart, but leaders in france and germany say they will see this one through. the senate is on track to confirm president obama's pick to run the pentagon. if confirmed, ashton carter will become the fourth defense secretary in six years. are daycares associated with high-tech companies safer from measles than other companies? >> scott mcgrew, you say in many cases yes. >> that's right, if the company is involved in science, laura. "wire" magazine has a bright idea of taking publicly available health care data about california daycares and looking specifically at the daycares that were associated with some of the biggest companies in high tech. "wire" lists both the highest rates of vaccination and some of the lowest by company name.

daycares associated with scientific companies had some of the highest rates of vaccinations. now the data's online right now. you can run a search for your own child's daycare. i tweeted out a link on twitter. i found my own child's daycare right away. according to the data from the california department of public health, daycares associated with oracle, gilead sciences, genentech all have 100% compliance. and electronic arts and yahoo! are very close. just into our newsroom this morning expedia is buying orbitz. we continue to see consolidation here. expedia bought travelocity about a month ago, and already owns hot wire and hotels.com. just out of curiosity, sam and laura, i ran a couple searches through that search engine for next weekend. i did it through a budget travel site including expedia and orbitz. i came up with the same rate no matter what. so less competition but i think the hotels have long caught onto

this and you'll see pretty much the same price no matter what you use. >> thank you very much. >> still like to dig for these deals if you can. starting today a san francisco school is putting itself in a tech time-out. >> it's kind of a new national thing. for the next three days students at convent and stute hall will voluntarily be shutting off their electronic devices. that school is the first the bay area and the third in the entire state to take part in a national movement called the tech time-out academic challenge. student who is opt in are given a pledge sheet and parents are also encouraged to help out by turning off the electronics at home as well. a massive fire burning at the malibu mansion of pierce brosnan. the flames broke out in the garage of his home just before 10:00 last night. some 50 firefighters were able to keep most of the damage contained to the garage. brosnan was home at the time but was not hurt. no word on a cause.

the highest totals came in from the highest peaks, most of which were above 7,500 feet. this is what we're working with at squaw valley and alpine meadow where is they're making the snow and they picked up 26 inches of packed powder in the last seven days. they've got 45 at squaw and 49 at alpine meadows. if you are headed up there, you won't be needing the chains this weekend but looking good for this weekend. a lot of that snow might be melting as we head throughout the next week. we're still tracking a slight chance for rain over the course of the next ten days. i'm really focusing on the 22nd of the month. 47 degrees in tri valley right now, at 51, good morning, san francisco, and 68 degrees is the forecast high at lunchtime. at lunchtime they'll be in the upper sixty, rounding out the day with highs in the mid to upper 70s all across the board. wine country looking good for this weekend. temperatures are going to continue to warm up through valentine's day. we're looking towards really warm temperatures here but down in southern california they'll be in the 90s.

if you wanted to hit the beach, temperatures in the 70s, mid to upper 70s, big sur, santa cruz, low 70s for pacifica, ocean beach, and bodega bay as we head throughout tomorrow and of course valentine's day. i do want to keep you informed of everything going on. we have a beach hazards alert. today through saturday, large breakers. expecting dangerous rip currents so take it easy out there if you do hit that surf. by the way, your surf inventory coming up. temperatures this weekend stay nice and mild. we'll start to drop you off as that system approaches getting into next week. more on that in just moments. want to check your drive. welcome in mike inouye. >> good morning, christina. look at this shot of dublin, live look at traffic flow shows you a good volume of traffic. as far as the eye can see we have cars and when i do that i'm looking at the traffic cram to see what we can see in the other monitors in the traffic center. let's look at the map and see how things are shaping up. as far as we can see, all the way up to the altamont, 680

south through pleasanton, your tri valley. let's move our cameras over and show you the bulk of traffic, 808 south out of hayward. the bulk of traffic heading south off of 580. typical pattern feeding into the rest of the bay. highway 4 over antioch has some slowing. the bulk of the big backup is in san jose. capital expressway to kirkner is where the stretch for 20 miles per hour or below extend. earlier crash occurs off to the shoulder but causes a big backup likely to get folks to shift over the 101. probably see more volume as well. folks taking 101 instead of 87 or capital expressway to avoid the backup and take 101 as well. it will cause more disruption for the south bay. we'll see how long it takes to sort it out. i'll watch that closely. as you come um the peninsula and the rest of silicon valley, not much drama, isolated to guadalupe parkway northbound direction. as we zoom out your maps farther, north of the bridge, we

secretary of defense. that vote happening on capitol hill today. it does look likely. he came out of committee with a unanimous vote from all the democrats and republicans there. if, in fact, he becomes the head of the pentagon, then he will be in charge of this war that the president wants to expand. he wants to get authorization from congress if necessary to send ground troops into syria, into iraq, to go after isis. that's what's got lawmakers split here. republicans say sure, and he may need more authority to do that because they need to give him all the tools necessary to win this war. many democrats are concerned that it could turn into more than just special forces here and there's a prolonged ground presence by the u.s. troops and they want to make sure that this is crafted in a way to prevent that. a three-year limit. they're fine with that. but they don't like the vague lanl about the ground troops. so we're expecting some debate about this over the next few weeks. earliest possible vote will

probably be march. >> thank you very much. the latest details from tracie potts. 6:31 and new this morning in other world news, global leaders announcing a ceasefire in eastern ukraine. that truce is expected to go into effect this weekend. ukraine's president says heavy weapons will be pulled out of the conflict zone within the next two weeks. the fighting between youken government troops and pro-russian rebels in the eastern part of that country has intensified in recent weeks with more than 5,000 deaths reported. six inmates committed suicide after failing to break out of a prison in taiwan. the inmates held a warden and guards hostage before taking their own lives. the ringleader said they had long planned the move and they were prepared to die if they failed. a former korean air executive going to prison now for forcing a flight to change its route because of nuts. the court said that aviation law was violated. she was upset that she'd been

either. i'm tracking a system over the course of the next ten days, the 22nd. 45 degrees right now in san jose. 43 in san martin. temperatures at lunchtime comfortable. your forecast looks like the this. as you break for lunch, 66 degrees on the peninsula today, 67 on the east shore. tri valley up to 75 degrees later on today, east bay at 72, and 74 degrees comfortable conditions on the peninsula. we'll hit the mid-70s right here in the south bay as well. here's the deal. we're going to see some big breaking waves as we get into your weekend, especially in santa cruz and just offshore san mateo county. so 6 to 8 plus foot waves, that is what they call good sur inform santa cruz. temperatures are going to be really warm. i want to talk about some records that we're expecting to break as we get into your valentine's day. gilroy is at 81 degrees on saturday. you're at 80 in livermore. those will be new records. 80 degrees for napa on saturday. comfortable wine country conditions. 79 degrees in san jose, and

mountain view at 78 degrees, and that, too, will tie an old record. so it's very unusual to see temperatures this warm for valentine's day. we'll have more on this, plus as promised that drought monitor update in my next report. right now, want to check on the drive. it is picking up, mike. >> it is, christina, in your usual patterns as well as something very unusual for san jose or at least an unusual pattern this morning. here's 101 that we see northbound with the headlights slow, the volume kicking in here, and we expect at the top of your screen notice flashing lights a couple minutes ago as well on southbound 101 at 680, cleared to the shoulder, whatever is going on there, thank goodness we have our live cameras around the bay. as we look at our map, a slow drive developing where the arrow is, pretty typical pattern, maybe more slowing going on because this crash north 87 at kirkner, an earlier crash that had activity off to the shoulder for quite some time. enough distraction to cause all

this slowing heading north. the bulk of the worst traffic from capital expressway up to kirkner and folks likely to use capital, get over to 101, they'll choose that instead of 87 northbound this morning if that you have option. also almaden expretsdsway a good option for you. we'll zoom over the tri valley and ooe bay where nothing unusual for this section. we'll end with the north bay, san rafael, showing you southbound traffic here to the curb. nothing unusual here or at the bay bridge toll plaza. 87 san jose, unusually slow stretch. this is unusual. you want to stick around for this story coming up. first we'll check the markets. >> that's a teaser right there. we'll find out what it was. >> that was my bad. it's a good one! tell me what you were going to tell me. >> are you sure? i was going to say the dow industrials are up 30 points. 39 points for the dow industrials. tesla getting hammered today, down better than 7.5. we talked about the reasons for that earlier.

i have video, german chancellor angela merkel standing by francois hollande talking about the cease-fire in ukraine. well, this morning they've thrown back to the capitol of brussels, of the eu. we're waiting to see if we can get video of her meeting with the prime minister of greece because that is going to be one awkward handshake. remember, greece can't pay back its debts or doesn't want to. germany is going to be the country most left holding the bag. greece wants more money in loans. germany says you got to make your next loan payment. the two sides meet for the first time today. we're waiting for that handshake. >> germany calling the shots in the eu. we'll see if it's a warm embrace or a stiffer approach. thank you very much. >> probably not a hug. this is the story that i was going to tell you about. still ahead, it's an amazing story of survival. a woman drives hundreds of feet off a cliff and spends three days climbing back up to the top. >> she made it.

that killed a legendary cbs reporter bob simon. he was killed in a car crash in new york last night. he was the passenger in a town car that reports now say was traveling erratically. he became well-known for his war coverage starting with vietnam in the 1970s. of course he's on "60 minutes." simon is survived by his wife and daughter. he was 73 years old. a california woman is recovering in the hospital this morning after spending three nights stran down a cliff. debbie lopez was driving along highway 1 in san luis obispo county just north of hertz castle on saturday. she lost control of her pickup and ended up hundreds of feet off the road. she suffered broken ribs, cut, and bruises. you see her face there. but after three days lopez finally got the strength and courage to climb out of her wind shield, then she began to climb up the cliff. >> the adrenaline just knowing that i couldn't get back down if i stopped. and just kept going forward and forward and forward. little by little.

a deadly shooting last night involving san jose police and an armed robber has rattled nerves in a south bay neighborhood. it happened last night on sherman avenue near west alma avenue just east of the highway 87/280 interchange. bob redell is there live. officers say the man charged at them with a knife. >> reporter: that's what they say. good morning, laura and sam. san jose police have yet to identify the man they shot and killed here last night, nor why this man tried to break into a stranger's home here on sherman avenue. two officers responded a little bit after 5:00 last night to a 911 call of an intruder trying to get into that home. officers with the gang suppression unit, according to the "mercury news," arrived to find the suspect outside the home armed with a knife. according to a police spokeswoman, he charged the officers. they ordered him to stop and

drop the knife. when he refused police say the officers fired several shots at him, at least one hit the man, he died later at a hospital. >> i heard shots, what i thought was fireworks at the time, and by the time i got out i saw cops everywhere. so figured someone got shot. >> reporter: police tell us that they did interview both officers after the shooting. the officers, by the way, have seven to eight years experience each with the department, and as is normal in officer-involved shooting, both are on paid administrative leave. reporting live here in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much. we'll follow up again, bob. meantime, checking your microclimate forecast. a live look outside this morning.

people living in one of san jose's nicest neighborhoods demanding help after a rash of burglaries. there were 82 burglaries in the neighborhood last month. now help is on the way. four truancy abatement officers will be funned to help get more criminals off the streets. mayor says he wants to give police officers a raise to boost retention. tonight individual jims will be held in santa clara and san jose to honor the lives of three muslim students gunned down in north carolina. last night thousands of people gathered on the university of north carolina's campus. blis political analyst believe feud with a neighbor over parking space led to that shooting. many people, including the father of one of the victims, believes they were targeted because they were muslim. craig stephen hicks is charged with three counts of first-degree murder. happening today, president obama comes to the bay area. he's doing some typical fund raise bug that's not all. >> not just standard operating procedure. brightest minds as he leads the cybersecurity summit at stanford, incidentally, the fist time a sitting president addresses stanford in 40 years. the summit is to focus on not only what the government can do to improve security but also how the government can work with the private sector to prevent and resolve hacks and improve consumer protection. president obama will also have a roundtable discussion with some of those silicon valley leaders, a breakout session so to speak. the timing is fortuitous as 80 million americans with anthem insurance are still waiting to hear whether their personal information was part of that massive hack on the company. earlier this week the obama administration announced the creation of the new agency. the cyber threat intelligence integration center intended to connect those dots for the hacks a lot faster. >> the president allotted $14 billion for cybersecurity in his 2016 budget. his administration's identified priorities identitying hacks
