but unfortunately i don't think too many of us are complaining with 70s and 80s on tap for today. even though it is february, it's still going to be rather nice and we don't have to spare the air. that's another small caveat there. the weather headlines very simple, clear skies, no fog to report even in san jose at the coastline. but we have a beach warning if you're thinking about the beach. it's going to be very warm, 70s and 80s there, but big waves are expected today and through the rest of the weekend. in fact with large breakers. so do keep that in mind if you're headed to the beach. along with record highs today and tomorrow. a little cooler for presidents' day but it's still above average with temperatures in the 70s. as you look at our sky camera net, would, everywhere is clear with just a little cloud cover off the coastline. look at these numbers later on today. 80 for the north bay, 73 for san francisco, 80 for the tri-valley, 76 for the peninsula and 79 for the south bay. just can't -- i mean looking at these numbers, it's hard to believe it's february. it's so nice. you can't argue with temperatures this nice.

i mean we could be freezing our butts off and we're not. >> and we're not. we won't complain. thank you very much, anthony. we'll see you in just a little bit. also continuing coverage this morning of president obama's bay area visit. the president scheduled to leave from sfo in just about an hour or so after spending a long day friday with vips and ceos. president obama also made a surprise visit to a san francisco restaurant last night. before that dinner with his staff the president was at a cyber security summit aiming to increase consumer protection and collaboration between the government and the private sector. the president also signed an executive order to make it easier for companies to report breaches and dangerous hacks. in the early part of the evening president obama attended a fund-raiser for the democratic national committee at the home of sandy and jean robinson in russian hill. next came the stop spending three hours with his staff at the restaurant staff.

some people didn't even know he was there until they saw all the security outside. >> i would never have imagined that he was half a block away from where i lived. it's the most exciting thing. >> i can't even believe it! i can't believe that he was on my block. >> this was president obama's 20th visit to the bay area since he took office. this morning he will head to sfo for a flight down to palm springs. more details on the president's executive order now. the information sharing between companies and the government would be voluntary. the government is to offer up more details on classified threats to allow private networks to beef up security and the government will also create a nonprofit group to standardize information-sharing between companies. the president says those standards would include strong protection for privacy and civil liberties in order to address critics' concerns about information-sharing. if you want to see full coverage of the president's short bay area visit, go to

nbcbayarea.com. there you can find all of the stories that we've done on the president since he arrived on thursday. meanwhile, a pedestrian is dead after being hit by a light rail train near a busy san jose intersection. a vta train hit and killed a man shortly before 7:00 last night near the blossom hill station. no one on the train was hurt. the collision caused major delays as blossom hill was closed between almaden expressway and near the oak ridge mall. a sigh of relief after the arrest of a trio of alleged burglars that may bring a recent crime spree to an end. after 80 burglaries in just one month, police arrested three people they believe are responsible for many of those break-ins. while that would be quite a crime-solving success, investigators are not bragging yet because they think they could nab more players in this crime ring. it appears that moving officers off their normal beats and into patrol is paying off, but the

mayor and the police union agree that this is a short-term solution. they're still at odds over what the long-term fix is. >> and we know that they are continuing to hustle, but we need more officers. we know we need more officers. >> just the fact that they're prioritizing here, we need to take a look at where they're taking the other priorities from and if there's crime going up in that area. >> no officer is immune to doing these follow-up investigations on these burglaries. we're taking these very seriously as is evident with these recent arrests. >> the good news doesn't stop with those three arrests. police say they have also recovered a large amount of stolen property so the victims will be getting their things back very soon. new video this morning from the peninsula where a 19-year-old man was shot on an overpass near 101. this happened in san mateo around 4:30 yesterday afternoon where peninsula avenue crosses over 101. the overpass was shut down for hours and that tied up traffic during the evening commute.

the victim was rushed to the hospital where he is being treated for critical injuries. every valentine's day the santa clara county district attorney addresses the issue of domestic violence. last year two people died at the hands of a spouse or a partner, the fewest in 20 years. the d.a.'s office says the county is making strides, though police still responded to 4,000 domestic violence calls last year. now the actual number of domestic violence incidents is likely much higher because oftentimes victims feel afraid to ask for help. >> so we want to drill down and figure out why is it so underreported in these communities and then try to address those issues, because what we're really focused on is we want to make sure that all citizens feel safe in their homes. >> some victims may not report domestic violence for fear of deportation, but the d.a.'s office does stress that victims will not be asked about their immigration status when they report a crime. this is the opening weekend for the movie "fifty shades of

grey," and as some movie goers showed up to see the film in oakland, they were met with protesters as well. protesters say the audience should stay away because of the portrayal of bondage and male domination. they also say the movie degrades women and promotes domestic abuse. >> movies like this and a whole multi billion dollar industry of violent and degrading pornography is indoctrineating people that women are sex objects. >> the movie is expected to make $60 million at the u.s. box office over valentine's day weekend. "fifty shades of grey" was made by our parent company, nbc universal. a disturbing find in marin county where dozens of explosive devices were found inside a woman's home in novato. sheriff's deputies arrested that woman along with another man. they believe the pair is behind a series of explosions over the last week in the novato area.

how about this for a sunrise. the sun coming up over the mountainsides in san jose, and in san francisco just as pretty. it's looking a little more pink as we go north. instead of your mailbox, we went to a nearby dumpster and a mailman was caught in the act. he worked at the willow glen post office in san jose and delivered to several different neighborhoods in the area. michelle roberts has the full story. >> i've had mail people just drop it on the ground, packages, throw it. >> reporter: joshua henry has

seen some postal workers do questionable things in the past, but throwing away mail? >> that's unbelievable. >> reporter: post office officials call it an anomaly. >> when you have an event like this, it tarnishes the honest work and efforts of other people. >> reporter: he said employees had to go dumpster diving in willow glen to retrieve mail that was thrown away by a new hire. it happened behind a business on lincoln avenue. >> we have been checking the other areas where this carrier had delivered prior to because he had only been with us less than a week. >> reporter: ruiz says the employee resigned andes now under investigation. his name isn't being released, but if convicted, he could face a fine or up to five years in prison. >> i guess violated would be one way of putting it. disan pointed. an autographed album jacket. >> reporter: andy has been waiting for a check from a customer and now he's worried it's in a dumpster somewhere. >> it destroys my confidence that something that was -- a communication that was sent to me will arrive.

let's take a look at some of our bridges, shall we? this live look, bay bridge toll plaza there, clear sky in the distance and the san mateo bridge moving nicely as well. no weather to contend with this morning for wherever you're headed. an apple a day that keeps the brown away. would you eat the genetically altered fruit? a modified apple which does not bruise or brown has been approved by the agricultural regulators for planting in the u.s. a canadian company working on the apple says it will cut down on food waste. the usda still has to determine if the appear 'le is safe for e before it is allowed to be sold. they're gearing up to be the legal eagles of pot preparing for a vote to legalize marijuana that could be on the ballot next year here in california. think of it as pot 101 for a south bay professor and his law students. a course that answers the burning questions of where pot shops can operate and how they can be regulated.

ian cole heads to class. >> reporter: marijuana shops have rolled out in colorado and washington. legal grows now peppered throughout those states. oregon and alaska just passed recreational pot laws as well, and next year california could do the same. >> you know, it's a really hot topic all around the country. >> reporter: that possibility brought the 13 santa clara law students to the classroom of professor w. david ball. >> if this industry takes off, it could be a big thing down the road. >> reporter: they're diving into marijuana, specifically legal issues around it. >> they think we have to talk about the process. >> reporter: they discuss what other states are doing right and wrong and what questions colorado and washington still have as they sell thousands of joints, buds and edibles. >> this is a really new field. and there isn't a lot of information out there. >> reporter: some of the questions california would have to answer, how driving under the influence will be measured. how would marijuana sellers be regulated and should employee drug testing rules be changed? >> i don't think i can answer

very many of those. some of it also is going to be pointing out what the questions are. >> reporter: professor ball serves on the governor's commission on marijuana law and policy. he said the students' work could help shape future regulations in california. >> your work is going to have an effect on the legal policy and legislation that is going to be proposed in 2016. >> reporter: it's one of the few law classes in the country focusing on marijuana. students say it's a rare opportunity. they'll post research updates to a blog made available to the public, and they hope next year california will be prepared, whether voters decide to puff or pass. >> there isn't just one way of regulating recreational cannabis, so we want to figure out what are the best ways. >> reporter: ian cole, nbc bay area news. now let's check in with anthony slaughter. we need rain, obviously, and we're used to having rain around valentine's day. today you'll have to take it i

don't -- outside. >> we usually have rain, it's cold and this year is the total opposite. it's going to be so nice. if you've got the day off, we envy you because it's going to be really nice, especially this afternoon if you want to head to the beaches. this is a look at san francisco bay right now. the golden gate bridge, you can see the sun coming up and it's going to be nice really even there at the golden gate later on this afternoon. here's our story. we have offshore winds driving these clear skies. an area of high pressure sitting right off the coast of california. what that is doing, it's actually keeping all of our storms up across parts of the pacific northwest. you can see that by the cloud cover streaming up and over this area of high pressure. when you come around it, that's when we have offshore winds right here across the bay area. this thing will be in place at least the next few days and that's why it's going to be so incredibly warm. that's typically the pattern that sets up. right now you can see temperatures warming nicely. already 55 in san francisco with the sun coming up there. south bay, clear skies, 48

degrees. the peninsula, a few high thin clouds drifting over san bruno. in the north bay, a little patchy fog across santa rosa at 43, but later on this afternoon this is the story of the day. temperatures in the 70s and 80s. everywhere across the country they're talking about bitterly cold air. we're on the opposite end of it. 79 today for the south bay, 76 for the peninsula. even the tri-valley will get back into the low 80s. yes, that's just a few degrees from 90. man, 73 in san francisco and 80 in the north bay today, so yes, it is going to be warm and downright hot anywhere you go. even at the coastline today you'll notice temperatures. san francisco at the airport 68 degrees. even at the airport in san jose at 74, but nobody lives at the airport so let's get you those actual numbers for your neighborhood. you can see in the south bay today, mountain view will be at 74. santa clara, 78. 80 in sunnyvale, even down towards the almaden valley that's one of the warm spots. let's take you through the peninsula and this is where we'll see warmer temperatures as

well. this is usually where you have some of the cooler weather, but with that offshore wind setting up that's going to continue to pull in warm air across the central valley. the peninsula 76, palo alto there, 77 for los altos. even at half moon bay today, 75 degrees. if you're looking for things to do, the chinese new year mini parade starts off. there's going to be lots of mini parades happening the course of the next week. 10:30 at california street working its way towards pacific avenue. temperatures downtown san francisco really nice. 1:00, 73 degrees. get out and see some of those dancing dragons. another cool thing, the tulips are in full bloom down on pier 39 at san francisco. today opening day. this is where you want to take the sweetheart, right, kris? get out and check out some of those flowers. 73 by 3:00 down on the embarcadero. yes, it's going to be nice wherever you go. we'll give you a quick beach report because this is probably what you're thinking about. pacifica, you'll be at 72. half moon bay, 75 degrees. and down in santa cruz, one of

our warmer beaches, you'll be at 79 degrees. so highway 17 in the next hour or so is probably going to be really packed. if you're headed to the beach, there are strong rip currents in place today because of that offshore wind that sets up and drives those waves. wa we'll look at breakers that would top 20 feet. the pattern will stay dry the next week or so. unfortunately for us high pressure stays locked in place accepteding all -- sending all of our storms to the north. you can see mid to upper 70s today for the south bay, even for the east bay. livermore, you'll be at 81. look at the trend, we do fall off a little bit as we head towards the upcoming week but still it's going to be nice, even in san francisco today. 73 degrees. then 74 for tomorrow. yes, wherever you go the next few days, beautiful weather. kris, back over to you. >> all right. still to come on "today in the bay" -- >> really, really down and i need a good pick-me-upper, i go

it's not often a person gets to see firsthand the positive influence that they have over others and over years. when they do, it can be a very special moment. one worth watching over and over again, as is the case of an east bay dance teacher. garvin thomas has this morning's "bay area proud." >> reporter: who knows how many thousands of dance students rob perry has had over the years, though many of them will tell you he taught them just as much about life as dance, which is why during his darkest time, they are pulling out all the stops to help. >> 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. >> reporter: just like a dance is created step by step, a life

is made by adding one day on top of the next. the difference, of course, being dancers know all along what they are creating. >> it should be plenty now. >> reporter: rob perry, on the other hand, had no idea what the past 30 years of his life had actually added up to, until he saw it for himself on youtube. >> it was amazing. >> reporter: dance is all rob really wanted to do in life. ever since his first class in high school. performing, teaching, coaching, rob has done it all with more than a little success. he led the castro valley high school dance team to a national championship three years in a row. >> he was our friend. i mean he was not only their teacher, he was their friend and he cared about them.

>> reporter: janet owns a dance studio in castro valley where rob sometimes teaches. although these days, he sits for most of his classes. he doesn't have the energy for much more. >> going upstairs, two stairs tires me out. >> reporter: it's because of the cancer, stage 4 colorectal cancer diagnosed last fall. it has been tough physically and financially. >> i mean the cancer has changed my life. it's huge. >> reporter: but rob's dance family has rallied around him, selling t-shirts, holding a pancake breakfast, all to raise money for his treatment. it was the video, though, that means the most. >> the best gift i think i could possibly have had. >> reporter: 50 dancers taught by rob over the past 20 years worked together in secret on it. they used routines rob had taught them over the years, sharing video to practice their

steps wherever they lived. finally getting together one day in december to put it together. the idea was to raise money. it's done that, sure. but rob says it's done much more. >> that video does actually bring my spirit back. if i'm really, really down and i need a good pick-me-upper, i go right to that video. >> reporter: that's because there's a message underfoot here. a message that says rob perry, you mattered in our lives. >> you know, you can be rich in many ways. you can be rich financially and you can have lots of things, or you can be rich in what you've done for people. pretty rich. >> reporter: so far in all their efforts to help, the dancers have raised close to $20,000 for rob's medical care. garvin thomas, nbc bay area news. >> go team rob. if you know of someone who's doing something nice for others, garvin would love to hear from

>> it's going to be so nice. even at the beach if you're going to be up in the mountains, wherever you are today, even if you're headed to tahoe, it's not going to get overly cold. of you'll notice the weather headlines today tell the story. we're looking at clear skies in san jose right now as you saw from the golden gate bridge, no fog to report of so once you get out and about through the day today, plenty of sunshine all day long. now, we do have a warning for beachgoers. if you're headed to the beach, we're talking about big waves and large breakers, along with that record highs so they may want to send you to the beach but never turn your back on those large waves and get far enough back because at times the waves will come up very high. as we head through the rest of the weekend, tomorrow and presidents' day does stay warm. today will be the peak of the heat. you'll notice once we get to the afternoon hours, temperatures will be warm. you can give the heater a break finally. south bay up to 79. in san francisco down in the city, 73 today.

crash, but investigators say they are looking into whether that bus driver tried to beat the train at a crossing. the train's operator encourages everyone to respect traffic signals and come to a complete stop before crossing railway tracks and that's good advice, even here where we are. police in hayward say it appears an early morning burglary went bad. not only did the bad guys leave behind a suspected getaway truck, they also left behind a body. this happened yesterday morning. hayward police say someone used a u-haul truck to smash into life chiropractic college early in the morning. when police arrived they found the body of a man in his 40s on the ground behind that u-haul. investigators are trying to figure out who that man is and whether he was one of the burglary suspects or an innocent victim. >> if you were there and if you saw what happened, we'd like you to come forward because a death as a result of a felony is going to be a homicide during the commission of a felony.

if this was an accounted ident,t to know. we want to know what happened. >> police are still viewing surveillance video from the college. it appears the crime was unrelated to the school, it just happened there. a san francisco hospital slapped with a $100,000 fine. ucsf medical center penalized for an error considered preventible. in 2012 a patient was given a chickenpox vaccine. the state public health department says it was a live vaccine, which the patient should not have received, and it caused blindness in one eye. the hospital must now submit a list of changes to avoid future mistakes. ucsf was one of ten california hospitals that was fined. no bad guys at lucille packard children's hospital on friday because the place was overflowing with young superheroes. that includes gadget boy, 7-year-old cancer patient, his super identity and those of several other patients were created with the help of local

off, it's still going to be nice if you can get outside and enjoy the sunshine. we're talking about temperatures in the 70s, even a few 80s out there later on this afternoon. 79 for the south bay. the peninsula will be at 76. the tri-valley, one of our warmest at 80. san francisco today 73 degrees there. in the north bay expecting temperatures right near 80. let's take you to some of those microclimates in the east bay and show you what we're looking at. 81 for livermore, dublin at 80. sunol, 78 there. even in oakland today, 75 degrees. these numbers are about 10 to 15 degrees above average. even in san francisco today if you're headed into the city, the outer sunset, you're at 78 today. down at pacific heights, 65 there so a little cooler at the water but you'll be 71 right near bayview. very comfortable weather is headed our way across the entire bay but 'tis the season to talk with valentine's day things. we're talking about free

silicon valley leadership says it is stepping up and diversifying the workforce. but while tech companies are branching out, the venture capitalists don't seem to be, not when it comes to funding women. we have new research that proves that. peggy bunker has this story. >> reporter: so you've got an idea for a business and it's a good one. you don't have the money t to launch it on your own, so you seek out venture capital to get it off the ground. according to an explosive new study, if you're a woman pitching this had idea, you've got less than 3% chance of getting it funded. that's because 97% of those vc dollars are going to men. dr. laura mather is a hugely successful tech entrepreneur. in 2012 she sold her company, silvertail, for hundreds of millions of dollars. "fortune" magazine named her one of the most powerful women entrepreneurs of the year. >> i walk in the room and you can see on their face that

they're done, without me saying a word. >> reporter: despite her huge success, mathers still encounters gender bias in the board room. >> a lot of the vcs who are traditionally white men, they look at an entrepreneur and they tend to think, wow, this person reminds me of myself when i was younger. i don't remind most of them of themselves when they were younger. >> reporter: and according to the blockbuster study completed last fall by babson college business professors, she's not alone. the study analyzed every vc deal in the u.s. between 2011 and 2013. >> when we looked at the differences between companies with male ceos and female ceos to see if there were performance differences, there were not. in fact the companies that had women as ceos tended to perform slightly better. >> right now we're seeing only 2.7% of venture capital go to women. and if that were the percentage

of women admitted to universities, which is another access point opportunity, we'd be in the streets marching. >> reporter: jill runs product launch site the grommet and says all of us miss out when companies run by women aren't funneleded. >> what businesses are not getting built, what problems are not getting solved? >> reporter: here in sill aun valley aligned partner is a firm that is vc industry veterans and they are used to being the only woman in the board room and the only female voice on the conference call. i asked them what they thought of the 2.7% figure. >> i wasn't surprised. i think there's a lot of activity around improving those numbers, so i'm hopeful. i also see it as an opportunity for us, frankly. if we can find great entrepreneurs, we don't care. >> the numbers are dismal. it's heart-breaking. i try not to focus on them

because it hurts. >> reporter: the study also revealed that vcs who have at least one woman partner invest in more companies that have women at the top. >> almost 50% of our companies have at least one woman co-founder. >> we love diversity because we think that drives innovation when you have multiple voices at the table looking at a problem in a different way. >> reporter: aligned partners recently invested in dr. mathers' latest company, a human resources technology that aims to create more diversity in the workplace. the babson study was shared millions of dollars online, but only one vc executive reached out to ask how to fix the gender problem. he's john burns from breakaway innovation group in boston. >> we've got to change the ecosystem a little bit. i think one of the ways you change the ecosystem is by creating an environment where women can be successful entrepreneurs. there's not a lot of women in senior positions in companies, so we're missing role models. >> reporter: burns has a personal stake in seeing change in the industry. >> i actually have four girls all under the age of 10, so when i say that this is a personal

let's get to some breaking news out of san jose this morning. we have reports that the fire department is currently fighting a four-alarm fire that started at an auto shop. it's the kind of place where you go and pull the parts yourself. you can see the smoke column there in the distance. it started around 7:00 this morning. we don't know yet whether or not that fire has been contained. it has been burning for almost an hour. we'll continue to cover this story all day long on nbcbayarea.com. meanwhile, 40 years and it's still making us laugh. tomorrow "saturday night live" will celebrate its 40th anniversary with a star-studded extravaganza.
