>> welcome to today on this sunday morning. i'm erica hill. >> lester holt. sheinelle jones is with us. dylan is without in the elements. >> she's going to give us a closer look as we know people are stressing to stay inside. the weather is the top story this morning. the snow has been falling heavily in boston at this point for hours. while new england is dealing with the non-stop snow tens of millions of people will be dealing with a huge drop in the temperature. we are covering all of this for you. our crews are in the middle of the storm. we want to begin with boston this morning. miguel miguel good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it was a tough night and will be a tough day. there's no place to put all the powder. it's still hammering down. overnight and into this morning, steady snow and whipping winds across new england.

this crippling storm with blizzard-like conditions blasting millions from maine to connecticut. >> it's terrible. hard to walk down. >> reporter: in boston almost 80 inches of snow has already fallen this winter. >> it's a disaster. >> reporter: nearly a foot more expected. today, rail bus and ferry service all suspended. another paralyzing blast in this historic winter. >> my car might not move for another month if i don't get it out of here in the next 20 minutes or so. >> reporter: officials are pleading with the public. >> we urge you all to stay off the roads. >> reporter: stay home. the roads not just dangerous, they could be deadly. on i-90 in erie pennsylvania this weekend, more than 100-car pileup. in indiana, accidents littered the roadway. >> everybody was going a little too fast. come up in this whiteout. >> reporter: the winds won't

help today. in some areas, nearly hurricane force gusts are expected. power outages flooding and beach erosion a major concern along the coast. in maine, they could see a whopping two more feet of snow. the national guard already deployed. >> if i stayed inside for the entire time it's going to snow this winter i feel like i'd probably be inside forever. >> reporter: it's not just the snow and wind but the bone chilling cold causing problems. the wind chill could be negative 35 in areas. >> miguel thank you. >> the wind is defining all of this. no surprise along the coast of massachusetts, the storm is really nasty this morning. the weather channel's jim cantore is in the thick of it in plymouth. >> reporter: this relentless winter continues. we are in plymouth mass.

the wave action here in the bay has been huge. some of it splashed over to the parking lot. the wind a little different with this blizzard. it's a little offshore so we're not seeing it run up to the area. back in january with the blizzard the water actually came right up through here and ran right into this area. the deal with this storm, it's the snow the intensity and the wind. we've got winds already gusted at 50 miles per hour. we've had all sorts of records just continue to be shattered in the boston area. i guess a little bit of a saving grace is sunday as opposed to monday morning, for a rush hour. another day where mbta is shut down hundreds of airline cancellations. even when it stops snowing, you can see the intensity of the snow creates the visibility below zero. this time tomorrow morning, the wind chills will be 20 to 25 below. even when it's not snowing, relentless cold follows each storm.

another one for mid-week next week. will it ever end? we're going to have to wait and see here in boston. we are now number three all time for seasonal snow in boston. a lot of it coming in the last 30 days. back to you. >> jim cantore, thanks. i think that was him. he was disappearing right before our eyes. >> tough to tell. some of the statistics not ones people want to here. dylan dreyer is in boston. she's going to give us a better sense of what's in store with the storm. what can we expect? >> reporter: erica, even when the snow stops this afternoon, the winds are going to continue to blow the snow around. that's why we have blizzard warnings in effect until tomorrow morning. if we look at the dash board camera the crews are working hard. we've seen the street plowed several times. the wind blows the snow back over the streets. we're still seeing snowfall rates of two to three inches per

hour. they've turned some of the two-way streets into one-way streets. all even numbered streets will go westbound from now until april 1st. we're going to see the snow wind down. the heaviest snow is starting to push down across southeastern, mass in plymouth where jim is. and camepe cod, winds are increasing. we have gusts up to 50 to 65 miles per hour. wind chill warnings are from the great lakes to the northeast, down south. we are looking at wind chills 30 degrees below zero tomorrow in boston. it's dangerous to be outside. even if your going skiing or playing in the snow you need to bundle up. your skin can't handle being that cold. >> thanks. as you can expect a storm of this size there are travel problems across the country. not just the roads. so far this morning, more than

1,800 flights have been cancelled. a majority of those are coming out of new york area airports and boston's logan international. obviously, those can have a ripple effect across the country. terror attacks in denmark. the suspect accused of a shooting spree is dead. we have up to the minute details. >> good morning. police say they tracked down the suspect using the city's network of surveillance cameras and information from a taxi driver. they were waiting for him early this morning. police say when he showed up he shot at them. they shot back. >> reporter: after a 12-hour man hunt, it all ended here. the man suspected of two terror attacks shot dead by police early this morning. the danish police commissioner said they believed the gunman acted alone. it all started at this cafe

yesterday afternoon. dozens of bullets crashing through the glass. inside controversial swedish artist was holding a talk on free speech and islam. he was unharmed. a 55-year-old man was killed and three officers injured. police released a photo of a possible suspect. hours later, just a few miles away more gunfire. this time as a synagogue. police evacuated a train station and locked down the street. >> we looked outside the window and saw this guy lying in the street on the other side of the pavement. >> reporter: a jewish man guarding the synagogue was killed and two more police officers were wounded. >> we will do everything we can to protect the jewish community in our country. >> reporter: the shootings eerily reminiscencet of "charlie"charlie

fighting. christen r of minor shelling overnight, but the truce seems to be holding. the u.n. council will hold an emergency meeting today as president obama monitors developments while vacationing in palm springs. he has been in contact with the german chancellor and ukraine's president yesterday. the leaders stress all siendsdes need to observe the cease-fire. there is speptkepticism the deals will hold. satellite photos showed russian tanks moving further in. the deal calls for ukrainian and russian forces to withdraw heavy weapons from the front lines immediately, while working for a reform to ukraine's constitution constituti tough for both sides. president obama has been pushing for this deal all week. talking to his european partners and president putin. this is the first glimmer of

hope in the crisis which has stretched more than ten months. >> thank you. there have been scary moments on board several flights to hawaii overnight because of rough air. sheinelle is here are more on that and other headlines. powerful storms in hawaii led to turbulence. seven people were hospitalized after a united flight from newark declared an emergency and landed in honolulu saturday. six other flights were diverted because of the storm. heavy rain and wind gusts up to 59 miles per hour caused extensive damage. another emergency might remain you on the movie, "snakes on a plane." a flight from los angeles was turned off when a passenger reported being stung by a scorpion. this picture was tweeted by a passenger. the injured passenger got off the plane and declined medical treatment. fly-by-night flig attendants killed the

scorpion. a man hunt is underway for a suspect in the shooting of a losas vegas mother over a road rage incident. this is a sketch of a man who may be involved. tammy meyers was on her way home after giving her daughter a driving lesson. a car followed her home and one of the suspects shot meyers in the head. her son fired at the car. last night, the family said they'd take her off life support. a case involving golfer allenby found injured on the street in hawaii. his cash and credit cards missing. honolulu police announced the arrest of a man with identify credit and use of allenby's cards. a spokesperson said he did not patronize an adult

scorpion. dylan is in boston. we have a check on the rest of the country's forecast. >> good morning again. we're driving through a snowstorm but i'm going to talk about another one that will develop later tonight. this one in the plains and the midwest. we can see as much as a half an inch of ice from arkansas to memphis. we could see as much as a foot to a foot and a half of snow in areas like nashville. also back through st. louis. this is going to be over the next 48 hours. then it's going to approach the mid-atlantic. by the time we get into tuesday, we could see four to eight inches of snow possible in areas like washington d.c. and up into new york. we have to see how the storm good sunday morning to you. another beautiful day coming your way. we're looking at clear skies. no fog this morning. look at temperatures later on this afternoon. we're talking about highs back into the 70s once again.

just not 80s like the trivalley saw yesterday. san francisco today, closer to the water, 76 degrees. 77 in the south bay. another beautiful day coming our way. if you're thinking about the beach, day off, another nice day there. temperatures back into the 70s there as well. we could use some rain obviously. that's been the trend all winter long. we'll see if that's in the forecast coming up. >> thank you. san jose firefighters are still busy cleaning up after a five-alarm fire broke out in north san jose. the fire started yesterday morning on commercial court. you could see smoke from miles away as flames engulfed an auto shop in that area. a car upholstery business was destroyed. firefighters say ten classic cars in a ways house were destroyed. the hazardous fumes had more than a dozen evacuate. no word yet on what caused that fire. new this morning, a shooting

in san jose results in the city's third homicide of the year. san jose police say it happened about 9:45 last night at liquors for less on mckee road near regional medical center and independence high school. they say the victim was shot at least once. he was taken to the hospital where he later died. police are investigating the incident but they have not made any arrests. time is running out to sign up for health care coverage this year before tonight's deadline. the public was invited to health care fairs across the city including this one by spring and low cost plans. the deadline so sign up and avoid paying a fine is midnight tonight. the best way to enroll is through the covered california website or you can go to one of the public health care fairs this afternoon. there is one in oakland at lake chalet. keep this in mind as long as you start an application today, you have until february 20th to

snow is on the ground. we've got benches over here and the snow is blowing right over it. that's what we're dealing with. this is why we have really no more room to put any additional snow. so far, in boston in the past couple hour we've seen thunder snow with snowfall rates at three inches per hour. imagine a downpour of snow you'd see in a regular thunderstorm though it happens to be snow instead of pouring rain. we've had gusty rain. in plymouth massachusetts, we have had wind gusts near 50 miles per hour. it is very cold. this is a very light and fluffy snow. it gets tossed around in the wind very easily. that's why we're looking at whiteout conditions. blizzard conditions. as the snow stops, the blowing snow will remain an issue. this storm is going to start winding down early this afternoon. by 1:00 the snow should be done but the winds are going to last through the night and into tomorrow morning. we are looking at brutally cold

wind chills. by monday morning, back from detroit all the way into new england and stretching down into areas like north carolina we are looking at wind chills below zero. in boston it is going to be very cold tomorrow morning with wind chills about 30 degrees below zero. it'll get 78 for the stri valley. if you're thinking about hit i guess the beach, we have the full beach reported coming up at 7:00. dylan, thanks. there is a little bit of a new trend in fashion these days.

[ bell tolls ] >> reporter: with each day in these mountains, there is new hope new promise in the day to come. for the sisters of the abbey here that promise lies in prayer. >> i came here to pray for the great sorrows in the world, struggles and the suffering. i wanted to help so many people so i thought maybe by prayer i could do that. >> reporter: 24 years ago maria joined this benedictine order at the foot of colorado's rocky mountains in a closed community where she and her sisters pray seven times each day and where she is also the ranch manager. >> cheese whiz. there you go. >> people are sometimes surprised that women are running a ranch but that nuns are doing it? i think people just don't think

that nuns do that kind of thing. but we find it a real complement to our spirituality. >> reporter: while much of what they raise and grow here is used at the abbey at its guest house, a few years ago word began to spread about their beef. >> i try to run it in a very reverent way. the animals are treated with care. >> people asked us. pretty soon we decided, well instead of just selling the cattle off, why don't we raise them and sell the beef? pretty soon we didn't have anymore. >> reporter: last year the abbey produced 13,000 pounds of naturally raised beef for 80 local families. and that still doesn't meet the demand. are you surprised at all the reaction you've had to your beef? >> a little bit. i didn't expect quite that much. my sisters at home say, oh yeah i'd like to have that. >> but do they have to get on the wait list too? >> oh yes. >> even your sisters.

>> even my sisters. >> while the novelty of ranching nuns isn't lost on the sisters, there is also a profound connection in this work and a reminder of why they chose this life. >> we're not blind at all even in our enclosure to the great sorrows that many people experience. i believe -- and i think the vast majority of the sisters, that through prayer we can have an impact. >> the farm teaches you, you are not in control of any of it. and it taught me a lot also about how to laugh and how to learn to let go. >> reporter: a lesson even the most dedicated are learning every day. we should say in terms of letting go they say it is really hard to let the cows go. they raise them for two years. but they have a trusted gentleman in town who sort of takes on the next phase for them. but it is a fascinating place. they're really fun, interesting women. one sister was in the navy for 15 years before she had her calling.

wally. he's one of the rare cue card guys left on the job. it may seem like a relic of the past but for wally business is booming. >> this is two stacks of comedy. >> something just doesn't feel quite right. >> i don't know. i thought that was really fluid. >> yeah. felt really pure. >> pure. >> reporter: he has a company that employs 20 people. they handle cue cards for several shows. but it all started right here. right now we are in studio 8h or as people know the home to "saturday night live." how did you go et to lucky to call this your office? >> i don't know. i went to syracuse university for writing for tv and film and i wanted to be a writer. my brother at the time was workingthe david letterman show which was in the building. they gave me a shot. >> you wanted to write for tv. >> i wanted to right write for "saturday night live."

>> well you are writing for "saturday night live." >> reporter: wally has bob hope to thank. as the story goes the legendary comedian was having trouble remembering his lines. the solution -- cue cards. according to wally, "snl" creator lorn michaels is a big creator in them as well. >> he considers that part of what people come to see. we put every single word that they say on cue cards. >> the walls of famed studio 8h are overflowing with history. wally is a window into it all. >> i was in the dressing room when tina faye met sarah palin. it was amazing. i started with adam sandler. chris farley david spader those guys. all the experiences i've had as just a cue card guy are way more than i could have had as a writer. >> reporter: wally's office sits directly below the seats and bleachers among the plywood and cans of paint. do you know how many people have walked in this exact hallway? >> this is our cue card area. >> you're writing cards right
