tv Comunidad del Valle NBC February 15, 2015 3:30pm-4:01pm PST
3:30 pm
welcome to "communidad del valle," and the air freshener called -- this is your "communidad del valle." we begin with a topic on immigrants and all the new regulations. we want to make sure that everyone is on the up and up. thank you for coming on the show. >> thank you for having me. >> you are doing a tour conducting the community forums with other egsagencies, tell us what is happening and why? >> we have partnered with
3:31 pm
different organizations on educate the community on immigration fraud. with president obama's announcement of deferred action for a certain segment of the population, the time is right for scam artists to take advantage of this part of community. >> are you hearing of cases that are happening right now? i assume your office mobilizes when you hear something is happening. is something happening or are we trying to prevent it from happening? >> it a bit of both. we are preventing fraud and building a bridge for the community to let them know we are here. the issue is the cases go unreported because people are afraid if they report a crime or come to us that they will be deported or turned in to i.c.e.
3:32 pm
in my work in the community, working with nonprofits, there's been allegations of such fraud occurring. that's why we really want to target as many communities centers, and schools and perishes, to try to maximize the word. >> you are not waiting for the customers or guests to come to you, you are going to them? >> absolutely. that is part of the big effort right now that the attorney general wants us to be out there, as part of the new community prosecution unit, to be present in the community so people know who to turn to. >> these forums are there for the people to know what paperwork to file and you are there to show that you are taking the cases seriously. >> that is the -- absolutely. the presentation will have two parts and the presentation will explain what the deferred action means, and so we will be
3:33 pm
explaining what are the qualifications, what disqualifies, you what documents do you start to gather? and then we focus on the fraud aspect. educating the community on who would commit it. how they commit it. how to prevent it and how to report the fraud. >> how much of a need is there in the community for basic information like that? >> there's a great need. most of the information is spread through rumor. i heard this from someone else or my cousin told me this. it's important to get out there and we have already started our mobilizing effort through catholic charities. sacred heart, asian law alliance. siren to name a few. and going thu the local school districts to try to spread the word of the tour and here through nbc. >> you are in the das office, look in camera three and issue a warning to those that -- people that might get involved in this
3:34 pm
fraudulent activity. >> if you are going to be immigration advice, make sure you are licensed and give the proper advice if not, we will investigate and prosecute if necessary. >> talk about tunreported problm we have in the county. there could be a fear factor maybe the communities they come from, the offices like you a s e not as credited. >> it understandable for people to hesitate to come forward. one of the distinctions that i make in if community, i'm the one on behalf of the office making the presentation, being a son of an immigrant, it hits close to home. we are not here to report anyone. we are a state and county
3:35 pm
agency, we do not work with the federal government. we are here because all victims in the county are viewed from the same perspective. and we want them to realize that. if they feel they have access to law enforcement and access to have the wrong remedied through our office. >> if you want to get in touch with the office, there's the address. what should people do? >> go the district attorney's website, there's the schedule, 7 trees, mayfair have confirmed. we will at various parishs throughout the city the. >> good look. up next around "communidad del valle," the hit panics in philanthropy. coming up next.
3:37 pm
tell us about about your organization. when you hear about philanthropy. it that is a great feeling because it means you are giving. >> absolutely. absolutely. when people talk about philanthropy, they think of bill gates and the rockefeller family. but the truth is that latinos are very much involved and we don't think of ourselves that way. so hispanicshispanicss in phila are working in organizations that are giving grants and they are in a network of gift givers. it a way to redefine giving. we think we are incredibly generous. we think we are the -- that we have been waiting for. so, you know, our organization of number one, you know, support the people that work in if field of philanthropy, that work at
3:38 pm
the ford foundation or the gates foundation. we recognize that each of us is a philanthropist. so we are promoting a culture of philanthropy and investing more in our own communities. >> that's where it started. i wanted to talk about a few things and one of them is your gmp ala, you came out with a report called the right to dream, tell us about that. >> the president, last year, president obama last year, rolled out an initiative called my bror's keeper. it has been seen primarily as an african-american initiative. to support men and boys of color. we have seen, you know, a number of teenagers, you know, killed in some cases, you know, by police. there's violence. there's a lot of loss of human capital. our report looks at what that looks like in the latino
3:39 pm
communities. why? because if you look at the statistics, there are more latino boys dropping inping ou school, failing to read at a third grade level. going on to college. more latino boys and then that are encars rated. this is a huge loss for our community. and in addition to those indicators, many of us have immigration issues. so, imagine, what we are trying to could with this report is to point out to foundations and to corporations that make investments in groups like this, that latinos are an excellent investment in great are results. we have got strong families. we are -- you know, working our -- our issue is not that we don't work. we work three jobs, the problem is we don't get paid. >> that's the truth.
3:40 pm
>> so there comes your call to help and have people rise and help out. and your gala helps out, talk about that? >> we have a conference on february 27th. and we are honoring 31 givers. so, you know, some of those are here. carmen and al castellano. win the lottery and what do they do? >> they give it away. >> they give it away. they think of their family and they think of can ksh. >> funny how everyone was their friend after that. >> exactly of. exactly. you have, a business woman who has decided to do, you know, a business that -- and she gives so much to the community. the vitners is, came here at the age of 12, working in fields in napa and owns a successful wine business now. all of these people and many
3:41 pm
more are coming from washington, they are coming from florida. they are coming from mexico city. we are honoring hoour giving because we have to start by identifying ourselves as the philanthropists that we are. >> it's a call to give. what a better title than being a philanthropist. if you need more information on the up coming conference and the hip giver gala or read the new report, go to their website. any final thoughts to share? >> that giving is so much a part of us. let's be grateful and givers. >> thank you so much for coming and enlightening us. and hopeful we have encouraged others to give. the latino flavor of the film festival. you want to stay with us.
3:42 pm
3:44 pm
showcase. boy, how excited are you about this up coming festival? >> very excited. s it is our 25th anniversary. so we are celebrating 25 years. >> there may have been people out there, 25, 20 years ago, we thought, oh, it will be around for a while and then die off. it has not and a lot of the venues are sold out. talk about what you think makes the event so successful? >> it started as a four-day celebration and now it has grown to 13 day festival and it's, you know, a bunch of 91 world premier events and there's a lot of event happening throughout the week. it's something that a lot of peep look forward to and -- >> one thing that efb awaits is who is going to get the maverick award this year. i know in the past, we have had lupe, who was in all kinds of roles. you bring high caliber actors
3:45 pm
3:47 pm
tell us what it's about. >> it's about a family that is dysfunctional. they all have their own little secrets. and no one really knows the secrets from each other and they all live in their own house. so, you know, it's a dark km comedy. >> you have a whole lineup of latino films. this being among them? >> yes, we do. we have films from argentina. the dominican republic. >> talk about why it's important for a community as diverse as the south bay to showcase films, foreign films, and latino films. >> san jose, we have a great population of hispanic people. latinos. and it's great to represent a lot of the latinos and their families and everything that is
3:48 pm
happening in the culture that they live in. it's great to bring the films here and have everyone enjoy them. >> give us a run down. tell us about the premiers, and where they are happening. >> they are happening in downtown san jose. and it starts february 24th and goes to march 8th. >> and it's theaters around san jose, is there a specific place where you can come and watch and enjoy? >> we have the camera 12 cinema and everything is in walking distance, even the events and everything that is happening during the 13 day festival. >> what do you hope that the folks that are in if festival are left in on march 9th after the festival is done? >> it's about empowering the communities and transforming lives. we hope that everyone who goes is transformed and goes out to follow their dreams. >> these are not big budget films. some of them are $50,000, and $200,000. it varies, but people put their
3:49 pm
heart soul in them. >> exactly, it's their baby. >> if you want more information, the film festival goes from february 24th to march 8th. there's the web dress for more information. any final thoughts? >> no, thank you so much for having me. >> thank you for being here. we will see you there. coming up on "communidad del valle."
3:50 pm
he has to be a marketing genius, or he does not know what the heck he is doing. he came up with his own line freshners, talk about what we are talking about here. >> well, exactly. i think the name came to me first. it came out of nowhere. when the idea comes like that, i think about what would be a cool
3:51 pm
product to go with that name or that idea? >> here are samples. you can have it dangling from your rear view mirror? >> yes. the most iconic eyebrows in the day. the idea came afterwards the name. >> and it was a all on you? you are not a marketing major or anything? >> i am a graphic designer, i went to santa clara university and graduated, i was at apple for three years. >> you left apple for this? >> i did. >> why so? >> i realized that work was consuming my life and i did not feel it was life fulfilling for me. and i decided to chase my dream and be entrepreneur like i wanted to be. >> pull them out, you brought
3:52 pm
them with you? these are like the regulfreshen that you see at the car wash. >> our tag line is no gas station air freshener, part of our brand is trying to show that the air fresheners can be brought up to a level of art. it's a bit of a art hanging from your rear view mirror, rar than having a ugly tree hanging from there. one of the things that i wanted to do was to promote our history and our culture and promote the legacies of these people that i feature. >> so they ahe is one of the re wrestlers. >> exactly. >> you came up with icons of who you wanted to have on your rear view mirror? >> yes, exactly. some of them are obviously
3:53 pm
people and they are historical figures. but some designs, like this one that i made here are just from my imagination, and from designs that i think really resonate in the latino community. >> and knowing you and your history, once it makes it big, we had a young lady from hispanics in philanthropy. i imagine you will venture in to that after you are rich and famous? >> i liked what she talked about, even though we started a month ago, we are a young company, we have already started to acquire funds for our scholarship fund. at our opening, at our launch party, we were able to raise close to $300 for our fund, it not an official foundation yet, but we are acquiring the funds so that eventually when we are official, we will have some of funds ready to go and hopefully
3:54 pm
target a young generation of artists are from ages 12 to 19. >> that is perfect. that's what we are talking about. now, this can only be attained on your website or will they be in car washes soon? >> we just started looking for our ambassadors to push our product. people that go out and try to promote it to local businesses. to boutiques, to salons, to places like car washes, we are available online but we are in one store right now in san pedro square in downtown. >> let me see this one, does it smell like her? >> you do not want blue demon to smell like he normally smells like. but this one, smells like flowers, and that is because -- >> you said cinnamon. >> she likes to paint a lot of
3:55 pm
wilderness and flowers in her paintings, so i try to make sure that the scent goes with the design. >> how much of a risk was it leaving a fortune 500 company and going on your own? >> it was a big risk. but i think it will flourish soon we started from the kick starter. we were funded on kick starter. we raised $3500 on kick starter from a lot of family and friends but also a lot of stranges that thought the idea was great and it motivated know create the product. because i saw that there was a market and i think there is and we will continue to expand the line to stuff like piniatas and things like that resonate with our culture. the fresheners, when you get it, it's funny and you like it and you laugh, you know, and when
3:56 pm
you don't, it takes a bit of education. >> when you are sitting in the board room and you have la tpeo that are not latinos, what do you tell them? >> hopefully, when i'm, you know, if i ever sell the company, then i can just show them the numbers and they dent need to understand. >> -- they don't need to understand. >> i would love this name and always fight to keep it, because i think it really speaks to our community and it's something that i have said growing up all the time and hi parents say it, and i think it just, like i said, it just makes you laugh, makes you smile. i think we have something here. >> have to say is it with a chuckle. >> there's a web address for more information. once he makes it big, he will be the future president of hispanics in philanthropy. any final thoughts where s befo you go. >> i hope you keep me to it. and call in he in a couple of
