gulf war. a suspect, 22-year-old danish citizen was killed by police yesterday after he carried out back-to-back attacks at a freedom of speech event at a copenhagen synagogue saturday. officials think the attacks were inspired by the shooting at "charl charlie heb bow in paris. investigators are still at the scene of claremont middle school on college avenue in oakland right now, stephanie chuang joins us live. investigators say this is suspicious as the call first came in from a burglary alarm, not a fire alarm. >> reporter: that's right, good morning to you both, laura and sam. the report came in before 2:00 this morning, someone driving on highway 24, which is right next to us reported a house on fire but firefighters got here and

claremont middle school which was behind us. joining me is battalion chief jeff hunter, good morning. thank you so much. talk to us about what crews found when they got here? >> on arrival significant fire in the cafeteria of claremont middle school. we made an interior attack and began putting the fire out, but it was a very difficult fire. >> talk to us about what made it so difficult. >> it's a large building and there was heavy fire involvement on arrival, and that being said, with the large building and heavy fire, crews had a lot of work ahead of them. they had to pull ceilings, it's got high ceilings in the building and a common attic. the fire ran part of the attic which meant it went vertical and when it hit the roof it spread out, so we had a lot of fire up in there and crews did a fantastic job getting the fire under control. >> now they're making sure there are no embers.

>> correct. we're overall investigating the fire. >> reporter: lastly, chief, when your crews got here, something seemed a little off, right? >> we had an interior door to the cafeteria that was open, so a door from the exterior leading into the cafeteria we found open on arrival, which is very unusual. working with my investigators to determine what that signifies and continuing to investigate. >> reporter: thank you so much, chief. appreciate it. that's battalion chief jeff hunter. they found a door that should not have been open, this is 2:00 in the morning, they're investigating that along with oakland police on the way. school is out today, it's presidents day holiday but the chief is saying it is unusable at this point the cafeteria at least. stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> thanks, steph. san jose police are searching for the man who killed a security guard. flowers and understand candles

are being left where the officer was gunned down saturday night. he was a security guard at the b boss nightclub. the observer of ai liquor store said he kept an eye on his shop. he says a man stole his display of flavored cigars saturday night. when he ran outside he dropped the cigars in the parking lot. xenega tried to stop him. >> he shot mostly i think to pick up something, that let him go, not a big thing, just not even $20, you know, and they can shoot, only took $20 and they shoot the people like that? >> xenega's death marks the city's third homicide of the year. all new this morning, crews had to navigate tight corners to put out a fire on a cargo ship docked at the port of oakland. the fire started on the upper decks of a large container ship.

nobody was hurt, the cause of that fire is still under investigation. a pilot has an amazing story to tell after his plane crash landed on the east bay golf course. david soolson's plane lost powe during takeoff. >> it was coming down fast. i wanted to make sure i didn't end up over in the houses over here. plane through, landing through. >> olson says can he laugh about it now because he walked away unscathed, missing golfers and nearby homes. wing on his plane did clip a tree before hitting the ground. he's lucky. a family of four and their four pets are out of their home

this morning after a fire ripped through the house. this happened on lorinda drive near lee high school in san jose yesterday afternoon. two people who lived there tried to put the fire out on their own but eventually had to retreat. the fire started in a dryer. nobody was hurt. investigators are trying to figure out what started a fire that destroyed $1 million of classic cars. the owner of the shop says a half a dozen prized cars were destroyed including two 1960s era chevelles and a rare 1970 monte carlo. fire investigators have confirmed what many people suspected that the building that burned last month in san francisco had several safety violations dating back several years. this according to the "san francisco chronicle." one person tidied on the fire a 22nd and mission street.

inspectors found fire escapes blocked, broken smoke detectors and exits locked. firefighters had to rescue a dozen people, many from fire escapes that wouldn't descend. many people have today off for presidents day which is nice. >> they're hoping the beautiful weather extends one for day. christina? >> it's almost as if you knew the forecast, sam. you know what? if you got to go to work today we are right there in the same boat with you. one more perfect beach day and then things are going to change especially at the coast the beginning of the next couple of days with a little bit of a cooling trend for us, in our endlaen inland valley spot we'll keep things going all weekend long. for today 70s persist at the beach. three degrees difference.

very good monday morning to you. happy presidents day as well as we take a live look outside, this is up from san bruno mountain, what a view looking down this morning. 4:44. a daring coast guard rescue caught on camera. helicopter crew pulled two men from the sailboat drifting 150 miles off the shore of nantucket in the middle of a brutal winter storm. crew on a nearby yacht helped out with communication support. luckily no one was hurt.

investigators say a 16-year-old who killed three members of his own family was upset about being punished by his parents. the teen was killed in a shoot-out with police in maryland over the weekend. police then searched the kentucky home finding the bodies of his parents and younger sister. they think he was mad because his parents banned him from using the computer. this morning a coroner in mississippi will perform an autopsy on the man who opened fire inside a crowded walmart. one officer was grazed by a bullet before police shot and killed a gunman. the officer is already out of the hospital. we still don't know what started the shoot-out in the first place. a father is facing felony charges this morning after his daughter shot him. the man was arrested in indiana yesterday on charges of neglect. investigators say the toddler not in a car seat pulled the gun from her dad's overall pocket and accidentally shot him in the arm. cardiologists joan crawford says fatigue is a huge red flag

for heart trouble. she admits it can have many causes but often overlooked by people especially women who think it's normal. she says noticing changes is key. >> if you can't do what you could do six months ago, tell your doctor and make sure that you've had a cardiac workup recently and make sure you're going to be okay. >> crawford says fatigue happens when the heart can't pump enough blood and diverts blood away from less vital areas. the result is tiredness and trouble doing things you had no problem doing before. we talk about vaccinations these days there may be a new way to keep your child from crying getting his or her shot. giving newborns sugar water during shots can easereveals ad during the procedure is more effectives. newborn put under a warming lamp and given sucrose cried half as much as those who just got a little sucrose alone.

england, just the pure amount of snow, too much for some structures. we saw a lot of collapsed roofs, including one in new hampshire at an apartment complex that affected some 200 residents. here in boston people struggling to get back to life as normal. public transit has been shut down over the weekend, now slowly starting to operate again on a limited schedule. the airport, some flights are leaving today. we had a lot of canceled flights over the weekend simply because of the visibility and poor conditions out there. now, like you said, much of the focus shifting to the midwest and southeast and the storm that is barreling down on those areas, louisville, kentucky could, see up to a foot of snow. other areas freezing rain and ice. if you are here on the east coast or midwest, there is no escaping this nasty winter weather that just never stops. back to you guys. >> it's just so foreign to us on the west coast, sarah, i'm sorry. >> it certainly gives us some perspective, no question about

warming will kick in and a touch cooler as we head throughout the day today than where we ended up yesterday. by tonight the fog creeps back in and that will make for a noticeable difference at our beaches by tomorrow. you might have to go back to work tomorrow anyhow. today you might be able to get out there and enjoy the beach. let me take you through your forecast for today. 71 degrees in carmel, spectacular conditions. santa cruz 73 for today. 70 in pacifica. ocean beach 69 degrees and 68 degrees, lovely conditions persist in monterey. throughout the week that sweet stride continues, temperatures in the low 70s tuesday into wednesday and we'll stay nice and comfortable getting into the weekend. back to you, sam and laura. >> thank you very much, christina. the faa unveiled a long awaited proposal to use commercial drones. pilots would have to maintain visual contact with their drones and be required to hold a new

faa flight certificate. they'd only be permitted to fly during business hours under 500 feet at 100 miles per hour or less and five miles away from airports. here is a new use for your old phone. try turning it into a home security system. you could do this for free. with no cell service turn at your old phone's wifi and download on app that lets you know if there's unexpected motion in your house. one of the benefits, the phone doesn't just give you video, it also provides audio. if you see a burglar in your house it can tell them to get out of the house. you may not have to worry about a very personal problem thanks to google. the company has received a patent for a digital deodorant. the device would attach to your collar or waistband and detect b.o. and send out a pleasant fragrant to cover up your own. the patent was actually granted this week. no word on when or if the device will be available.
