thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm sam brock. breaking news we've been following all morning long, fierce flames light up the early morning sky. investigators are trying to figure out if this massive fire at a bay area middle school was starteded on purpose. >> this was at claremont middle school right neex to b.a.r.t. station. stephanie chuang has been at the scene all morning long. it appeared the door was pride open? >> reporter: that's right, good morning laura and sam. i spoke with oakland police as well as officials from the district, the school district who say it appears the first reports came in as a burglary alarm or report around 12:30 this morning and the police sergeant saying possibly a win t dough smashed and a door pride open. you can see on miles avenue the fire trucks have been replaced by oakland police vehicles as the investigation now moves forward. target is around the corner. claremont middle school cafeteria, the fire was out at

3:10 this morning. fire crews were here until about 30 20 minutes ago to make sure there were no hot spots. firefighters say this was a tough battle because of high ceilings and the flames spreading quickly to the attic. they had to use pike poles to smash through the ceiling, taking an hour and a half to contain the fire and the focus on a possible criminal investigation with the initial report of a burglary. >> that's consistent with the fire alarm and the fire investigators on scene investigating this incident is looking into whether or not we had any other alarms that might have sounded prior to the fire being reported. >> reporter: the damage contained just to that cafeteria, that's the good news and depending on whether the school can fully accommodate students is unclear whether the school will be closed beyond today which of course is a holiday, presidents day. so oakland police working also with oakland fire as well as oakland unified on this investigation. live in oakland this morning, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> a lot of work still left to be done there. thank you very much, stephanie. there's a memorial growing this morning for a san jose

security guard shot and killed during a botched robbery for a few cheap cigars. manuel xenega was a security guard at b boss club on north avenue. someone tried to steal cigars from a nearby liquor store and dropped them in the parking lot. when xenega stopped to pick them up, someone opened fire from inside a waiting car. the gunman is still on the loose this morning. just in, san jose police say they have found a missing elderly woman. gloria garcia wandered away from the capital flea market around 2:30 yesterday afternoon. she has alzheimer's but does not take medication and she is okay now. new this morning, investigators are trying to figure out what sparked a fire on board of a cargo ship docked in oakland. the flames broke out last night on the upper decks of a large container ship. crews to h to lug their equipment up 12 flights and through a nar cocorridor to

fight the flames. the building that burned last month in san francisco had several safety violations dating back years. according to "the chronicle" one person died at the fire. inspectors found fire escapes blocked, broken smoke detectors and exits locked. firefighters had to rescue a dozen people, many from fire escapes that wouldn't descend. it was a flight that could have ended in disaster if not for the incredible reaction of a local pilot who landed his single engine plane on a hayward golf course near the 10th hole. the pilot encountered problems right after takeoff sunday afternoon. >> "today in the bay"'s bob redell live at the executive airpo airport. he's lucky enough. >> reporter: very lucky. good morning to you, laura and sam. the pilot david olson considering his plane failed him just after takeoff at the executive airport very lucky man and shortly after takeoff is one of the most critical times of a

flight, around 1:00 yesterday afternoon. olson tells us his bulldog airplane, something he bought back in 2000, suddenly last power. he believes it was a ruptured oil line, relying on his 15 years of flying experience he reacted quickly to try to find an emergency landing spot. fortunately the sky west golf course is right next to the airport. olson saw the 10th hole was clear and guided the aircraft there. >> it was coming down fast. i just wanted to make sure i didn't end up over in the houses over here or anywhere near any golfers. i yelled "fore!" plane through, landing through. >> reporter: olson can laugh about it now because he wasn't hurt and able to get out of the aircraft on his own and didn't hit any golfers or homes. his wing did clip a tree before landing on the ground. rob redell, "today in the bay." >> gosh he's so calm about it, too. >> amazing. thank you, bob, composure under pressure, a good quality for any job. 6:05, we give you a look at your

in the north bay, pinnacle, sf maritime, is he which couldia and yosemite parks all freer today. you can imagine this is going to draw in crowds but one of the holidays, some people have the day off and others do not. i.e., us. let's find out if you are trying to get to work what it lacooks like on the roads. here's mike inouye. >> i want to show you the bay bridge toll plaza, look at this. no problem. it's easy. presidents day so you will have a lighter volume of traffic around the bay. we'll look at your maps, talking about a smooth flow of traffic. we have eastbound 580 two crashes reported, one at park, one at fruitvale. counter commute in the same area, might be a duplicate report. we're watching that a circle farther south, southbound 880 at marina boulevard we had a stalled vehicle there. sounds like the slow lane had been blocked but it may have been cleared over the last couple of minutes. i say may because we don't get confirmation from chp for a couple of minutes until they've gotten a chance to update

things. the speed sensors are at speeds in both directions. northbound 280 we had a stall approaching paige mill road so the off-ramp may have some activity just off to the shoulder but no slowing north into los altos. 280 moving nicely. we'll show you the rest of the bay, bottom of your screen san jose doesn't show any slowing for our sensors, same thing toward the bay bridge. the golden gate bridge let's give you a look coming across from the north bay into the city, a smooth, easy drive. no delays throughout the north bay either, in the city itself we will have a typical parking control still enforced. you have to pay the meters, some schools are still in session, but for those riding muni on a saturday schedule so that will affect folks getting to school spra perhaps. >> somebody's got to dot people's work on a holiday. 6:08 right now. new troubles this morning another storm affecting the east coast, bracing for a powerful

changes. we'll take you through your microclimate and give you all the details in just moments. and we're looking at a smooth drive across that san mateo bridge westbound here, looks about the same volume westbound across the bay bridge. we'll talk about a couple of crashes for 580 and for 880 coming up. >> thank you, mike. here's a look at today's top stories. investigators are looking into a suspicious fire that ripped through the cafeteria at claremont middle school in oakland. police say it's possible someone smashed a window and pride open a door to the cafeteria before that fire started. early in morning egyptian war planes dropped bombs on isis targets in libya. the attack came just hours after the isis released a new video showing the beheading of several egyptian hostages. a pilot used a fairway in hayward as a mikeshift landing strip yesterday. david olson's plane lost power after takeoff but managed to put the plane down near the 10th hole without injuries.

new rules to george how americans use drones. >> scott mcgrew you say it's remarkable they exist at all. >> that's really the thing. we've been waiting years to hear something from washington from drones and frankly we may have to wait several years more until proposed rules become actual rules. there is a process under way in washington and it appears there is progress on this. that's the remarkable thing this morning. the faa sunday promoting the dayer xhial operators could get an inexpensive license to drive drones. it was the topic of "the press" yesterday. >> those in europe have figured out how to use these commercially and are allowing them. what we're doing in the u.s. is trying to catch up because it's been really clear how useful these tools can be. >> another restriction would be drone operators would have to

have line of sight. they'd have to see the drones as they were operating. this pretty much rules out delivery by drone. if the amazon guy can see the drone landing at your house he may as well walk over and hand you the package. american stock markets taking the day off for the monday holiday. story if doesn't look like the cease-fire is holding in ukraine. japan's economy not performing as hoped and greece in the midst of renegotiating its get. greek banks are barely holding on and one worry is greece, if it does exit the euro, greeks would have all of these euros in the bank automatically become drachmas. sam and laura, nobody wants drachmas. what do you do if you have your life savings in euro in a greek bank right now? >> start to pull them out. >> you take them out of the bank. that hurts the bank even more. they were already weak, and now this threat that perhaps people

are going to start the run on the banks. >> that will be interesting to see. sounds like tuesday might be like a monday. >> fair enough. happening now, millions of people in the midwest and southeast bracing for a second storm making its way across the country. take a look at this. most of the northeast is just in a deep freeze following heavy snow all weekend. crews are just trying to restore power to thousands of people in that area. closer to home, a usually fierce competition has now been canceled and experts say you can blame the drought for that. this year's world cup ski and snowboard competition was supposed to happen next month at squaw valley. here's some video from last year. only 140 inches of snow has fallen there this year, that's a third of the usual total. several olympic medalists and other award-winning athletes were expected ed ted to attend. now they will not. time to check our own

68 degrees at high noon on the east shore, and 74 degrees to round out the day. highs come in at 3:00, when you're trying to get out to the beach. beautiful conditions. that's the tri valley. 74 on the east shore and for us in the south bay we're looking at 76 degrees. meanwhile the north bay 15 degrees above average ending up in the upper 70s. here's the deal. equal but opposites. i see this pattern all the time. midwest and northeast highs zero to 20 degrees for today, then you factor in that windchill it's going to be very cold, feeling like negative 5 to negative 30 degrees. meanwhile we've got this big ridge of high pressure firmly in place and for us, high pressure reigns supreme for most of this week. rain stays to the north until we get into the tail end of this weekend. that's when the jet stream will start to kind of zip to the south just enough for us to see this tail end of the system come through. i'm not expecting much, if we see anything, it will be light, but i like to let you know about every single opportunity.

now you might want to get out there to the beach, temperatures for today. significantly cooler tomorrow, at 71 degrees in carmel for today. down to 65 degrees tomorrow, and really you can see that trend here from your san francisco five-day forecast, dropping into the 60s, this is the last day, with mid-70s in the city by the bay. that's where you'll find the traffic today at the beaches, at your local shopping centers, and wherever mike inouye ends up. he always draws a big crowd. >> mostly because i'm having a fit and they're like why are you yelling at your kids? oh, i'm sorry, a little tired. over here the bay bridge toll plaza, traffic moves very nicely right now. no need to have any sort of fit or tantrum down the east shore freeway. look at the beautiful sunrise if you have a chance to do that now. the presidents day holiday for many businesses and schools, and transits are treating it that way. there's a crash in walnut creek on the surface street, not a major issue for your commute. i'm focusing eastbound 580, we

had a couple of crashes. park boulevard as your eastbound commute headed away from there and whatever happened has been cleared to the shoulder. at marina 880 southbound has been cleared southbound into san leandro and smooth drive for the upper east oshore freeway richmond toward the berkeley curve. the carquinez bridge coming off the north bay no big deal. north bay drivers, novato through san rafael and into the city you're still close to the speed limit all the way in towards san francisco. keep in mind parking enforcement for the meters in san francisco, schools are in session, of course. i know that because san francisco's unified are going to serve hotdogs and three-bean chili today. i saw that on their menu. over here looking at the the south bay, the dta, only transit agency working on a typical weekday schedule. the rest holiday or weekend schedules going. no major issues. in fremont we'll focus on mission boulevard, a major roadway around the santa teresa area, los palmos area.

a very good monday morning to you. look at the colors in the sky this morning before the sun arrives, over the bay area. live look outside overlooking the bay. it 6:23. a warning about sudden heart trouble you might overlook. cardiologists joan crawford says fatigue is a huge red flag for heart trouble. she admits it can have many causes but often overlooked by people especially women who think it's normal. she says noticing changes is key. >> if you can't do what you could do six months ago, tell your doctor and make sure that you've had a cardiac workup recently and make sure you're going to be okay.

>> crawford says fatigue happens when the heart can't pump enough blood and diverts blood away from less vital areas. like muscles, arms and legs. the result is tiredness and trouble doing things you had no problem doing before. teenagers in america are getting sleepier. experts generally recommend nine or ten hours of sleep for teens. the majority of 15 to 19-year-olds don't even get seven hours of shuteye. the problem has worsened experts blame smartphones, social media and rising rate of obeset. this morning alaska airline officials are trying to figure out how a scorpion ended up on a flight out of lax. the stowaway scorpion stung a woman on the hand before crew members managed to kill it. the flight was in delay for about 40 minutes while the crew went through all the overhead compartments looking for any

had been held since last month. it's unclear if anyone died as a result of those air strikes. over in copenhagen a memorial is growing in honor of the victims shot and killed by the synagogue and a cafe over the weekend. authorities say the suspect, 22-year-old danish citizen, with a long history of violence killed two people and wounded five police officers before he was shot dead by police himself. overnight danish police arrested two men on suspicion of aiding that suspect in the shooting. officials think those attacks were inspired by the shooting at "charlie hebdo" in paris. candles and flowers mark the spot where a security guard was gunned down in front of a san jose liquor store. he was shot while simply trying to help. >> "today in the bay" kris sanchez joining us from san jose. this was all over some cheap >> reporter: all over some cheap cigars and the memorial around manuel xenega's car continues to grow. the candles are burning as they

schools and businesses as we look at your map. the approach toward the bay bridge toll plaza is very clear. green all over. we did have this incident still tracking eastbound w"580 right around park boulevard because the earlier crash well that's!@ cleared from the roadway but some flares are still there. folks might be a little distr t distracted. shout out away from the maze and toward the oakland hills, looking at a smooth drive for the rest of the bay as we zoomed out looking at san jose to the bottom of your screen, peninsula on the left-hand side there, you see mostly green. have a new crash showing up northbound 85 out to the transition for northbound 17, that will be an issue heading up toward hamilton area but that crash should be off to the shoulder shortly. no major slowing and a light volume throughout silicon valley. as we zoom out the rest of the area north of the golden gate bridge, novato toward san rafael, slowing southbound 101. live look at san mateo, we'll across the bay to the peninsula.

investigators uncovered signs including a smashed window that this looks like a break-in. >> reporter: yes, good morning. i saw two oakland police crime technicians put pieces of evidence inside brown paper bags inside their police vehicles and taking off. this was first reported as a burglary and that's why you see it regardrd as a crime scene. blocked to ma sure no one goes in or out. school district employees who work with the alarm say the first call came in 12:30 this morning. fire crews were here until about 6:00 to make sure there were no hot spots after what they described as a tough battle because of high ceilings. the flames spread quickly to the attic. it took about an hour and a half to contain the fire. the focus is on this possible criminal investigation of a suspected areson with the

through san rafael, a smooth drive in toward the golden gate bridge and san francisco, your city by the bay. schools are in session for san francisco unified, so keep that in mind, you'll see kids around the area but the buses if you take the bus to school you're on a modified saturday schedule so check the muni line for your route and specific changes for today. there will be a slightly modified route. that could be an issue for san bay, peninsula at speeds. smooth drive through the south bay. no real problems coming across the san mateo bridge. earlier crash at the bottom of your screen, looks like everything is moving smoothly. i'll show you the live camera 101 at 680, a smooth light drive. we approach 7:00, look at the dublin area, westbound 580 should be really hammering down on the commute right now. right now we have no problems so you can put the hammer down to 65 at least, that's the speed limit. that's your travel for 580.

back to you guys. >> a few sparse cars out there. thank you very much. san jose police are searching for the man who shot and killed a popular security guard during a botched robbery of a few cheap cigars. flowers and understand ka s and left from manuel xenega was gunned down saturday night. he was a security guard at b boss nightclub. the liquor store next door says xenega kept an eye on the shop. when xenega -- excuse me, when the man ran outside he dropped the cigars in the parking lot. xenega ran to help him pick them up. >> the guy inside boom, boom, boom pi i think he wanted to pick up something to let him go. not even $20, not a big thing, you know, and they can shoot, only took $20 and they shoot people like that? >> you can understand the

emotion. xenega's death marks the city's third homicide of the year. palo alto police want to you look at the sketch of two different suspects wanted in connection with bathroom assaults. this man peeked over a urinal partition and grabbed the rear end of another man, it happened last wednesday inside the macy's at the stanford shopping center. two days earlier detectives say the man you see here took a photo or video of a woman while she was using a restroom at the coverley community center. police say despite different suspect descriptions the two assaults could be related. also new this morning investigators trying to figure out what sparked a fire on board a)uçsp)go ship at the port of oakland. the flames broke out last night on the upper deck of a large container ship. crews had to lug their equipment up 12 flights of stairs and through narrow quarters of the ship to fight the flames. no one was hurt. fire inspectors confirmed what many people suspected the building that burned last month in san francisco had several staeft violations dating back

years according to "the chronicle." one person died in the fire at 22nd and mission street. they found fire@r broken smoke detectors and exits locked. firefighters had to rescue a dozen people, many through fire escapes that wouldn't descend. it was a flight that certainly could have ended in disaster, if not for the incredible reaction of a local pilot. he safely landed his single engine plane on the sky west golf course in hayward right off of 880 >> "today in the bay's" rob redell joins us live from executive airport with reaction from the pilot you'll only see on nbc bay area. >> reporter: laura and sam the pilot david olson joked with us that he yelled "fore" before he brought his plane down on the tera firma. it was certainly the best possible landing, given the worst possible scenario that he was presented with, shortly after taking off around 1:00 yesterday his bulldog airplane,

the faa has released new rules for drones, mark. >> people had gotten frustrated how slowly washington was moving, several yoofrtsz creaun created and canceled drone studies because nobody could tell them what the commercial rules were. well the faa proposed new rules allowing the commercial operation of drones with an inexpensive and relatively easy to get license. now, it begins a period of public commentary, so it may be several years before we see actual rules when it comes to commercial things. one thing we can say, amazon's idea of delivering packages via drone will not fit inside these rules because the faa says no matter what, the drone operator has to stay within eyesight of the drone which defeats the purpose if the amazon fella can see your house he may as well just hand you your package. no markets today.
