want to help you get over that hump so that we can enjoy that beautiful weekend. temperatures this morning mostly in the 50s. it's going to be kind of overcast to start the day. there's some patchy fog out there as well. this afternoon, more sunshine and a warmer day. first, want to welcome in mike inouye. happy wednesday, my friend. >> fog again today, just like yesterday. not exactly the same, but similar. smooth, easy drive right now. our speed censors are showing the north bay, very smooth coming across the bridge. we're going to move toward antioch where there was some early slowing approaching contra loma. there was an earlier crash. looks like all the activity has just cleared from the chp report. all lanes should be clear and these sensors should clear up over the next couple minutes as

well. the rest of the bay moves very smoothly. we'll check the south bay coming up. >> thank you very much. new this morning, nearly a dozen vehicles up in flames, this after a fiere in the north bail. it happened at a vineyard west of highway 29. flames broke out at a barn that's used to store agricultural equipment. five atvs, a forklift, and two track totors were among the vehs heavily damaged. nobody was hurt. a new clue could help track down a person who shot a popularity security guard. the store owner took surveillance footage. it shows four men walking in saturday night. sources tell nbc bay area investigators believe one of them may be connected to the shooting of manny zunega. they're looking for the man who walked back inside the car and grabbed the case of flavored

cigars. >> even for $20, how can they shoot a human. that's my point. >> he and another guard saw someone running from that store. he saved the life of his fellow guard by shielding him when the shots were fired. we're also getting our first look of two gunman who took over a little caesar's pizza. police are hoping somebody will recognize the unique weapon used in this robbery. police tell the chronicle it's either a break action pistol or a shortened shotgun. the clerk was shot and the people responsible got away with some cash. the employee, we're told, should survive. police are looking for a suspected prostitute who drugged and robbed a fremont man. the woman called herself crissy. police released this picture of her yesterday in hopes someone would recognize her. the victim hired her through a prostitution website. when she got to his house, he said she drugged him, then let three men into his house to beat

and rob him. a santa clara university student accused of stabbing his roommate inside of his dorm will be in court today. the roommate is recovering in the hospital and tomorrow kim will be arraigned on attempted homicide charges. investigators have not said, though, what led up to the stabbing. parents say a school went too far when it passed out pamphlets containing questionable material. it reports children in 2nd grade got the pamphlet that asked did i perform impure acts by myself or with another, or have i had or advised anyone to have an abortion. parents say their children are too young to know about those kinds of things. >> that's only the latest controversy to strike the catholic church in san francisco. today, angry parents and teachers will hold a vigil in san francisco. they oppose new morally clauses

laid out for high school teachers by san francisco archbishop cortilione. the party is over for a popular pride event in san francisco's castro district. pink saturday is organized by the sisters of perpetual indulgence. the reason, they say it's become too out of control with too much violence. >> we've seen it repeated to be a really dangerous place for the neighborhood to be. >> a lot of the violence that we've seen has not been about a hate crime. it's just people getting drunk and belligerent. >> city leaders are considering other options like a shorter party and charging people to attend. a recent decision made by one major college is sparking a backlash. university of massachusetts amherst has decided to stop all

iranian nationals, to step them from developing nuclear technology. the school took its own action two weeks ago. some students are calling this downright discrimination. president obama plans to ask congress to back its military plan to beat isis extremists in iraq and syria. the president is hosting a summit at the white house today, focusing on violent extremism and threats both at home and abroad. >> the dialogue still ongoing. senator barbara boxer joining the conversation on vaccinations. boxer will be at the head start center in emeriville to talk about why she thinks it's important to get kids vaccinated against preventable diseases like measles and whooping cough. at least 141 people have been diagnosed with measles so far this year.

113 of them directly linked to the disney land outbreak. most of those cases are here in california. this was supposed to be the first day millions of undocumented immigrants could sign up for legal protection from deportation. it's all part of president obama's sweeping immigration order that a federal judge in texas put everything on hold this week after blocking the order. the issue is dividing lawmakers. >> we will not sit idly by while the president ignores the law. >> this process can be delayed, but we as the community will not be deterred. >> texas led 26 states in filing suit to block the order. the justice department is already planning to appeal. want water? ask for it. that's one of several new restrictions being considered to combat california's drought right now. the state's water resources board is debating the parameters

of new regulations. one would force thirsty restaurant diners to request drinking water. another would require hotel guests to ask for fresh towels and sheets, rather than having them changed every day automatically. >> everything we do can add up to a big difference. >> it's a collective effort. you want some water, christina, you'd be asking the skies to let some out for us as well. >> we need to conserve, whether or not we have rain chances in the forecast. i do have to tell you, i'm watching a system toward the 27th of the month, that looks pretty promising for some pretty decent rainfall. right now, though, we're actually above 100% of average in places like gilroy for this water year. we need the snow pack. that's really going to determine how we get out of this drought. i can tell you this next system also looking rather warm. temps right now mostly in the 50s. happy wednesday to you. thanks for waking up with us

you're watching "today in the bay." >> a very good wednesday morning to you. look at this illuminated show overlooking the bay bridge, san francisco this morning. a nice start halfway through your workweek. the tank cars involved in that fiery west virginia train derailment this week were safer than federal law requires. the crash caused numerous explosions and fires. investigators say the crash involved tank cars that already had safety upgrades voluntarily adopted by the industry four years ago. now president obama is urging even tougher standards for trains carrying crude oil. bart wants to go high-tech to keep its workers safe right now. in october of 2013, a train hit and killed two workers as they serviced the line. now bart wants to create a worker safety system to automatically stop trains if workers are on the tracks. the federal government gave bart a $5 million grant for that project. home buyers beware. scammers are trying to get your down payment.

a scheme almost cost rick garcia $18,000. the san jose man says he made an offer on a home, then got an e-mail from his realtor saying the offer was accepted, and instructed him to wire the money. but the e-mail was not from his real estate agent, it was from a hacker. >> the hair sticks up on the back of your neck, something's wrong. i thought, boy, i was duped. and this can happen to anybody. >> garcia called the fbi, got his money back because the scammers never picked up his wire transfer. experts say you should talk to your real estate agent before sending any money. >> that is a chilling warning there. starbucks without the long line. how about that? the coffee giant is rolling out a new delivery program. >> oh, where do we start? apple securing another patent as well. what are they working on? for more on that and the rest of our news before the bell, let's turn to landon dowdy. we missed you yesterday. >> i know, i missed you guys, but i'm back.

apple may be going virtual, the company has been granted a patent for a wireless app that uses the iphone as a display screen. it's sparking speculation that apple may be getting into the virtual market. samsung started selling a virtual device at best buy last month and google plans to launch one later this year. household debt is rising. the fed says debt hit nearly $12 trillion last year, with the biggest increases in car and student loans. experts say if consumers ran into trouble paying these debts, that could hurt their ability to make other purr kass, potentially chilling the u.s. economy. starbucks, it's part of the company's ongoing efforts to crave an upscale cup of java. subscribers can have packages of small batch reserve coffee delivered to their door about

a teenaged girl is warming up this morning after being rescued from icy waters in new jersey. the girl and two friends were climbing on a pipe when she fell into the water. crews pulled her out and rushed her to the hospital with hypothermia, then rescued her friends from the pipe as well. it is so cold right now in philadelphia, for some perspective, that a firefight turned this building into an icicle. crews sprayed it with water to put out a fire. now with all the ice, the city is worried the building will fall down and officials have declared it dangerous. the owner has ten days to tear it down or the city is beginning to have to do it for them. >> i guess the weight of all that ice. my goodness. >> that is incredible. it gives you some perspective, what our vantage point is, christina, given the fact there are people in single degree temperatures and here we are with another day of 60 degrees. good morning to you. >> good morning. it's going to be fantastic yet again. although we do get a little bit of a return to winter. with those low clouds in the morning. i want to take you through the year so far and review for

gilroy. just to kind of give you an idea of where we stand. we're actually at 110% of average rainfall for the season in gilroy. but here's the deal. in december, obviously we had that historic storm followed by more history in january. it was the driest on record. and then so far this month, we picked up three inches, looking towards another significant system as we get into the end of the month. but what i can tell you is this is why fire weather is very, very concerning for a lot of people out there. we've had these waves of very dry weather fallen by ample rainfall, so you get a lot of growth out there. that's why they're manning up those fire teams already. we told you about that yesterday. 55 degrees right now in san francisco. good morning to you out in the tri-valley. you're at 52 degrees. as we get into this afternoon, temperatures are going to be comfortable yet get. we will end up in the 60s with more sunshine than we saw yesterday. and you know what, low clouds definitely in place for the first half of the day, but that chowder weather that we haven't had for a while, it's kind of

nice to see its return. the rest of the week, more sunshine coming through. we will see a pretty big difference between your temperatures and sunshine. on saturday into sunday, with a little disputurbance creeping u from the south. this could spla us with much-needed moisture. if we get any snow over tahoe, it will be over 7,500 feet. but the chances there, like i said before, a better chance toward the end of the month. coming up, as we head throughout the morning together, right now back to you. >> i see some red bulls in our future. thanks a lot. investigators say the las vegas woman killed in an apparent road rage shooting had been looking for the suspect. police say tammy myers and her armed 22-year-old son followed a car she thought had been involved in an earlier road rage incident last week. eventually they stopped following and went home. police say that's when a gray sedan pulled up and someone

began shooting. police are still looking for the shooter. san bernardino county is paying up two years after a manhunt for a rogue ex-lapd officer. a cabin in big bear burned down during a gun battle between christopher dorner and police. now the owners of that cabin will get $200,000 as part of a civil suit. authorities say dorner killed two people, including two law enforcement officers in a rampage. coming up, primates and ipads. >> a zoo gave the high-tech toys to the monkeys. after the break, we'll show you the amazing thing they did with the technology after this. >> wow, even a monkey can use those. they're right. looking toward fremont. a smooth drive. no problems. no monkeying around. we'll check on highway 4 coming up.

welcome back. wednesday morning. you can see the bay bridge from that vantage point on the san bruno mountain. it's a sign of the times, i guess. zoo animals stepping into the digital age right along with the rest of us. >> monkeys at a zoo in duluth, minnesota, they're experimenting with ipads. the primates have watch videos, even use the ipad to draw and solve puzzles. >> why are they more proficient with the ipads than i am?

but what might be even more shocking here, one monkey has used the ipad to face time. this monkey came to duluth from chicago and apparently he got a little lonely, so zoo staff let him use face time to call his family back home. >> he vocalized with his father at lincoln park, and then there was a lot of vocalizations coming across from the other troop as well, and then everybody scattered. >> he now has a friend in his enclosure, but zoo keepers hope to keep the ipad available to him on a regular basis so he can face time more often and probably tweet as well. >> is he savvy with social media? i don't know. his facial expressions. he's been a little bit profane of late. >> got to be careful. monkeys don't realize those pictures stay around forever. maybe he'll get some new followers. in oakland, these folks following one another very smoothly.

easy drive right now. we're expecting some low clouds and maybe some fog like yesterday, but so far, easy, clear drive toward the bay bridge. look at this map for oakland. we'll check with the wide shot. zooming out, no problems. typical slowing coming off of a street. a little bit slow on west 580. over on the right side, this is zooming toward the tri-valley. your typical pattern. no surprise. that's good stuff. we don't like surprises for the morning commute, but if there are any, i'm here to let you know about them. there's one dog waking up a winner this morning. >> this little lady, a beagle named miss p, won best in show last night at the westminster kettle club. she is the second ever beagle to be crowned champion. >> the 4-year-old beat out a portuguese water dog who is related to president obama's dog
