a little cloudy and a lot cooler than yesterday. good morning and thanks for joining us. i'm vicky nguyen. let's check your micro climate forecast with anthony slaughter. >> it is hard to believe. a lot of our cameras show clear skies. a system through nevada that is going to move this way throughout the day. you are looking live at the san francisco camera. you will notice a good mix of sun and clouds. just about a few minutes ago, those cloudses burned out of here. from time to time, the clouds continue to stream on in. the best chance for seeing showers today, that will be across the south bay and the east bay foothills where we will see the best chance of it. overall, everyone else will see a good mix of sunshine and cloud cover. temperatures will be cooler today out of the 70s, back into the 60s. showers you can see on the radar fired up this morning. south of tahoe. 6,000 feet. you see the snow showers. overall, this stuff is light. every no you and again, one of those showers will pop up across the bay area as we head throughout the day. south bay and east bay, down

towards morgan hill, gilroy, monterrey and antioch, pleasanton and the altimont pass. 66 for the north bay and the south bay. temperatures cooler. a brief passing shower possible today. vicky, we have a better chance of rain as we head towards the long term next weekend. we will talk more about that. the san jose sharks took their talents outside. the historic event is being called a big success. more than 70,000 people gathered at levi stadium last night to watch the first outdoor game in team history. it took a week of preparation to transform the 49ers field into an outdoor ice rink. fans say they enjoyed the room to roam with a lot more space than they usually have for tailgaters. >> more people getting out to the game. a tank with only 20,000. it was definitely cool to see

this many people supporting hockey out here. >> fans also saw fireworks and live performances from nbc bay area native, john bogerty and melissa ethridge. they didn't get the win but scored with the fans and the nhl. from hockey, to football, levi stadium will host a number of big events, including russellmania, 31 next month, tickets range from $35 to $2000 each. in their only game at levis, the san jose earthquakes play the orlando city soccer club in may. get ready for the biggest sporting event in the country. levi stadium hosts super bowl 50 next year on february 7th. mark your calendars. we have more from last year's shark online. we will show you all the video

highlights from this memorable game in about 30 flinminutes fr now. the usgs says a 6.6 earthquake struck this morning at 6:25. a tsunami warning has not been issued. we will continue to follow this story and bring you the latest details when we get them. more than a dozen people are picking up the pieces after a three-alarm fire damaged a building in san francisco. it happened yesterday on the corner of 15th and church street. you can see the smoke and flames engulfing the buildings. firefighters say it took about 20 minutes to knock down the flames and another hour for them to put out hotspots. many people had to evacuate and leave behind their belongings. >> ours was the middle level to the one above us who is totally gone. we are hoping we will be able to go in and salvage some of the stuff from our rooms a firefighter was treated

for exhaustion. other than that, no injuries were reported. the red cross says it is helping residents during this difficult time. no word yet on what started that fire. it was the second major fire in san francisco in two months. the last fire engulfed a mission district building last month. now, a nonprofit wants to buy that building. the mission economic development agency hopes that by purchasing the burned-out building, it can get stores back in business and people back in their homes faster. if the sale goes through, repairs could begin in six months. the goal is to raise $100,000 on the crowd funding site tilt. it is not enough to ease concerns for a hayward neighborhood after the kidnapping of a 4-year-old girl. the suspect is a has spanic man in his 20th, 5'9", 150 pounds. the girl told police the suspect

tried to pull her into his white sedan friday afternoon on joshua and ebony way. she ran to a nearby home for help. >> when i saw the sketch, i was pretty sure the guy is not from here. so that scares me even more. they could come around any neighborhood and try to prowl around. >> the suspect was wearing a green hoodie, black, knee-length shorts and black athletic socks. a trail of destruction left behind after a possible drunk driver goes on a rampage in the south bay. it happened saturday in san jose near mt. pleasant high school. they say he crashed head on into a car. he drove off and then hit two people that were eating at a food stand. the driver then slammed into a curb where his car got stuck. police finally caught him after he tried to get away. ambulances rushed the two people to the hospital. one person is in critical

condition. now, a new terrorist threats to malls in the u.s. the mall of america increased security after the sa molly terrorist group, al chabad released a video calling for attacks on western malls, including the nation's biggest mall near minneapolis. the video focused on the september 2013 attack on a shopping mall in kenya where at least 67 were killed. a masked man asked what if such an attack occurred in the mall of america. they are working with federal, state and local law enforcement to keep their customers, employees and tenants safe. a parent's plea. three london families are pleading for their daughter's safe return after the teenagers ran away. authorities believe the girls are off to join the extremist group, isis. parents are shocked describing the girls as straight "a" students but believe they may be following a classmate that left in september.

they boarded a flight to turkey and may be enroute to syria. david cameron is getting involved as the search intensifies. >> it is deeply concerning. obviously, local authorities will do everything we can to help these girls. >> authorities are now using he social media to contact the girls and convince them to return home. coming up, rust and cracks on the bay bridge. this time, engineers don't have a fix yet. the new problem, the $6 billion span. why parishioners will be filling the collection plate with messages instead of donations today.

traffic moving nicely this sunday morning. tests reveal another problem for the bay bridge. they found rustings and cracks on a steel rod submerged in water, one of hundreds from the east part of the bridge. although the problem is serious, it doesn't make the bridge unsafe. they are waiting for more tests before deciding on a way to fix the problem. happening today, asea of black at a catholic church in san francisco. they will be wearing black to protest a controversial pamphlet. they gave students a pamphlet that talked about adult issues including mercy killing and infidelity. the parents said it was ann proep yut. parishioners put notes to express how they feel. the priests apologized but says

win will be in one of the two sound categories. not the most exciting wins but it wouldn't go home empty handed. >> reporter: still, being handed any oscar remains a pinnacle achievement. let's get a check with anthony slaughter of this forecast. you were just mentioning the last time there was a big awards show, the golden globes show, it rained. >> mother nature has something out for those stars. we are finding showers across the sierras. this is good news. with he could use this rain. you have probably heard us say plenty of times, we are in a drought, yes, yes, yes, this is going to continue to occur as we head through the day. showers will cross the sierra. you will notice a lot of this activity is very hit and miss. it is very light. you don't see the oranges and reds. some of the heavier rains. all this stuff is very, very light. a lot of this not in the bay area. we are waking up to clear skies for most of us. if you are doing any traveling

down towards southern california and the central valley. from interstate 5 down through los angeles, you can see the best chance of seeing showers. if you are going to do any traveling down 1, even down towards monterrey, you may run into a brief passing shower. overall, look at our sky camera. it is hard to believe, i may be talking about showers later on this afternoon, because it is so clear. we do have a few areas of fog, specially along the coastline. you will notice that wind starting to pick up in san francisco. that's the system starting to pull into the bay area. the thing about it, south bay, east bay, more cloud cover today. the brief passing shower. you get into the peninsula, san francisco, north bay, the farther north, you could see more sunshine like we are seeing right now. full blown sunshine for the north bay. 66 there. 68 for san francisco with that sun there. you get towards the south. temperatures are going to be cooler today because of the cloud cover. 66 in the south bay. let's take you to the microclimates and show you what we are looking at. it will still be nice.

67 in the valley. saratoga, you will be up to 66. in mountainview, 65. let's take you into the peninsula. you will see temperatures a little bit warmer about you still cool considering we were back close to 70 degrees yesterday along the coastline. 63 for half moon bay. same for daly city. mill bury, 65. redwood city, 67. los altos, 65. in san francisco, this is the last day that you can take part in tulip mania. this is the final day. daily tours start at 10:00. san francisco, you will see plenty of sunshine with a little bit of cloud cover stretching back by 3:00. overall, 65. february, not that bad. you know what, with all of this warm weather and the rain we had, just eight few days of rain in december and january, has pulled all of the allergens out. all of the birch and juniper are high. this is the case.

fighting a life-threatening illness is tough at any age. if you are a child, it can seem so much more difficult. time at the hospital is time away from home and school. how can kids keep up and continue to learn? garvin thomas is here with this morning's "bay area proud." jerry brody isn't sure if he liked math and got good at it or god good at it because he liked it. it ended up forming a great career for him and how he has been choosing to give back for

the past decade and a half. at children's hospital, oakland, surrounded by doctors and nurses busy saving lives with medicine, jerry brodie quietly changes that with math. >> your really good. let's see what else we have. >> reporter: twice a week for 15 years, jerry has been coming to childrens making sure kids too sick to go to class don't fall too far behind in school. jerry, a retired chevron engineer introduces children of all ages at every level with even a game or two of chess thrown in. >> it was always in the back of my mind at some point, if i could, i would like to teach. >> reporter: he is plainly good at it. very popular with the patients, not to mention their parents. >> it is amazing. i couldn't thank him enough. what he is doing, he is

impacting, not just for a little bit but for them forever. >> reporter: if that seems to be a bit of an exaggeration, just take a trip to the university of nevada, reno, and check in with jamie eskavel. >> he got me to love mathematics. >> reporter: when jamie was 11 years old, he was treated at oakland children's for an aggressive form of cancer. he missed some of the sixth grade and all of seventh grade. not only did jamie not fall behind in math, just opposite, in fact. jamie now an applied mathematics major in college says it was jerry who not only influenced his course of study but the direction of his life. >> anyone who dedicates themselves to help people like that, any little thing they might be doing to help can have a significant mark on that person's life. in my case, that's exactly what happened. >> those are the things that you

things to do, it is going to be another nice day. south bay east, towards monterrey and gilroy, you may run into a brief passing shower. a storm system may be moving in. hard to believe when you look at these sky kams. it is clear this morning. some of us are waking up to a little bit of clourd cover. that's going to continue to be the case. the south bay and east bay, where we have the best chance of seeing some darker clouds across the foothills and one or two may produce a brief shower. it is going to be a nice, sunny day for both of us. san francisco north, it won't be as warm because of the system making its way through. we have the radar falling through. rain showers across the sierra and down towards the central valley. some will develop as we head through the day. east bay foothills, south bay foothills, nice day. temperatures into the 60s. not overly warm. 68, san francisco. 66, south bay. cooler conditions there because of the cloud cover. even the tri-valley, only 64 because of the clouds that will develop later on this afternoon.

a tsunami warning has not been issued. you can stay up to date on our website, nbcbay area.com. immigration confusion. representative mike handa held a community meeting to discuss the president's executive action on immigration. last month, he ordered deportation deferral for more than 4 million undocumented immigrants. this week, a texas judge put a hold on that order that has a lot of people confused and worried. congressman handa spent date in fremont encouraging those that fall under the order to still apply for their documents. >> we want them to have the right information and be prepared for the eventuality of moving forward. they will have to have the right documents prepared. >> the department of justice plans to ask a higher court to stay the texas ruling. the federal government is also pursuing a separate full appeal of the judge's decision.

>> squl no matter where you you are or what you're doing, there is a good chance you are on camera. more taxi cabs are getting dash kams. the safety feature has critics worried about privacy rights. here is "today in the bay's" stephanie trunk. >> reporter: a scream from the taxi where a dash kam caught the plunge of the tranceasia plane moments about have it crashed, a myriad of ankles catching the me tee or right dashes across the sky. here at home, dash kams are catching on to, catching crimes, violent ones, to crashes. this is the back view into a metro cab when the driver and his three passengers are all trying to catch their breath as reality sets in. they've just been hit. oh, my god. >> they have just been hit by an unmarked police vehicle according to richard heigl. >> he said he had his siren on,

which was proven not to be true. he said that the cab driver was timing the lights so that he entered the intersection the instant the light turned green. >> the dash kam video shows the light has been green for well over a block and then there is the terror that can happen within a vehicle. this video from 2013 shows an unsuspecting driver trying to drop off a passenger in daly city when all of the sudden, the young woman stabs him with what appears to be a steak knife. >> she went home. she was bleeding and she told her mom that the driver was trying to rape her and she was defending herself. but i was the driver that got attacked by the passenger. >> peter park is the ceo of the kam based in san francisco. his dash kams provide high-deaf recordings, video and audio all in real time. for this taxi driver, kyle kam rar ra at fers an intrusion of

privacy now uses peace of mind. two weeks ago a customer used a stolen credit card to pull a fair. >> we pulled the chip out of the camera and were able to get a very good still image and video image of the two people in the back of the taxi. >> reporter: it was the kam that helped to score the change in sfraen's regulatory devices for recording devices in taxi cabs. before 2009, all these videos needed were silent witness cameras. those took pictures every time someone got into a cab. drivers could take pictures whenever they wanted. these were snapshots in time. >> they give me peace of mind. they make me feel safer. >> and it helps keep him in business. his taxis are involved in up to 30 accidents each year. each one a few thousand dollars. setting him back in revenue. one word against another doesn't

hold up in small claims court. that's why the expansion is hitting outside the taxi cab industry. >> within the past, i say, specially last year, we got a lot of uber drivers. if you have a customer that rates a particular driver bad, they can potentially lose their privileges to be an uber driver or a lift driver. >> for this small business owner, the $20,000 investment in the dash kam paid for themselves in ten months. money is specially critical with the loss of drivers he blames on the influx of the ubers and the lifts on the road. >> this increases the profit. these days, of course, this business is really struggling. without the cameras, it is possible that i wouldn't be in business today. >> reporter: stephanie trong, nbc bay area news. in order to prevent any tampering, they have built in security measures so drivers can't stop or start the recordings or access the footage. a new service and a free

ride. ac transit is unveiling a double-decker bus in the bay area. they are testing out a roughly 40-foot bus as part of a pilot program. an ungraded surveillance system as well as providing spectacular views from the upper deck. they will have soft, reclining seats and foot rests to relax. it is free during the test period. it takes passengers from fremont to stanford as well as around san francisco and the east bay. transit officials say, there is no timeline on when they will officially hit the roads but the earliest would be in 2017. much more ahead on "today in the bay." highly anticipated game between the sharks and their southern california rivals at levi stadium. we will show you the highlights and hear from the locker room following an exciting but tough night for the team in santa clara.

retires from office next year. will camilla harris win this office by default? larry is here to untangle this. how is it she finds herself all alone in this office with so many candidates? >> she is in this perfect position to keep others, specially the democrats, at bay for really three important reasons. up first, she is a state officeholder in a powerful job. that xwcombination gives her hi name recognition. her term as attorney general doesn't expire until 2013. she has what we call a free ride. she doesn't have to risk losing her job, giving it up. third, harris has seen issues that really have rest nated with california. they range from taking on the nation's banks to protecting children from online exploitation. so, put it all together. combine these factors. they make her a tough candidate

for somebody to take on. >> timing isn't everything but it is certainly something in this situation. >> few offices as coveted as the united states senate obviously. will someone else step forward and who are the likely candidates at this point? >> for the democrats, former los angeles mayor, antonio de la rosa, he remains the most intriguing possibility. he has broad name recognition and he is latino in a state where latinos are overwhelmingly democratic. he has a couple of problems. he has caught criticism from liberal democrats for supporting cuts in medicaid, medicare and social security and he advices several corporations, one of which is herballife. it has received criticism as a pyramid scheme. condoleezza rice, she says, flat out, she won't run. others, including former

republican party chair doug sunime, nearby, facing a pleasant task of raising $25 million to be competitive. raising that kind of money is not that easy in a blue state like california. >> no, it is not. boxer is one of big big offices coming up, along with senator feinstein and governor jerry brown, who is termed out. so, some people are saying that instead of challenging harris, these big names are perhaps waiting on the sideline to take on feinstein or perhaps make a run for governor. >> now, we get into this whole chess game. you look at feinstein first. that situation is very fluid. she can run for re-election in 2013. she will be 85 years old at that point. some are going to wonder if she should step down. even if she doesn't, feinstein could well face serious competition. i think the most important open race may well be for governor. at that point, at this moment,

rather, lieutenant governor, gavin newsom states that as candidacy. he doesn't have state-wide, the same popularity or name recognition as camilla harris. it is very likely that big hitters like state treasury, john chung, maybe former controller, steve wesley and perhaps even via la rosa may seek that office along with former gubernatorial candidate. he has invested a lot. here is the bottom line. we are about to see a new jen rag of leaders in the state's highest offices. you know what, just like musical chairs? a lot more candidates than available seats. >> a lot of people looking forward to seeing a new change and a new evolution in california. larry, thank you. a pleasure, as always, to have you in this morning. stay with us. of those, could drift into the bay area. this is 10:00. you can see that thick, cloud cover just south of the bay area. gilroy, morgan hill, down towards monterrey. by noon, still hanging on to some of the clouds, specially across parts of the foothills. we may see a brief shower as this system moves into place. it is headed to southern california. so cal will see the brunt of the activity. the general trend this week, morning fog, afternoon sunshine. temperatures cooler than they have been, at least this past week. we will be back into the 70s for most of us. 60s this upcoming weekend as we head towards thursday and friday. here comes our next storm system diving out of the north. that's going to move this way as we head towards next weekend. friday, saturday, looks to be the best day between any showery activity for next weekend. that is system moves in, as i mentioned in my last report,
