do you see that near you? good morning to you. >> reporter: well, good morning. we started at negative 7 degrees here this morning. it's now negative 2. but i think that this fire has less to do with it than the sun. unfortunately for the south, it doesn't look like things are going to be warming up any time soon because of another blast of cold air that is forecast today. in texas, american airlines flight slid off the runway during its landing. no one was injured. investigators are looking at monday's sleet and ice as a possible cause of the accident. today more snow in the forecast. it caused more than 100 accidents including this pile up new the texas, new mexico border involving 29 vehicles. another disaster where a trucker lost control and the trailer

dangling off of a bridge. >> it's like snow and freezing rain. it's just ice. it's like ball bearings underneath your feet. >> reporter: the numbing icy mix made dallas seem like a ghost town. in new england, heavy snow continues to cause roof top cave ins. with no snow today in massachusetts, many dealing with public transportation delays say that frigid temperatures alone are actually a warm welcome. >> i'm grateful to be taking the train today. >> reporter: in florida, more than a dozen manatees escaped the cold waters by swimming into municipal drainage pipes where it's warmer, but once in, they could not get out. >> we have to go in and get them. >> reporter: rescue workers have to work to extract the mammal,

and some weigh several hundred pounds early this morning in all, 19 manatees were rescued. some were scraped up. interestingly, this month florida and hawaii are the only two states that have not seen snow. oddly, alaska is interestingly without snow. in fact, to the point they had to cancel a sled race yesterday because of the lack of snow. matt, i hope this campfire warms things up because nothing else is. >> there is that fire we were talking about. thanks so much. >> let's turn to dylan dreyer on board the icy hudson river. dylan, good morning to you. >> reporter: it's hard to hear. no surprise that water freezes at 32 degrees.

we are so far below freezing for a period of time that ice is becoming a major issue on the hudson river. take a look at how much ice has developed along this major waterway. we are surrounded by it. they use it to transport 70% of the northeast home heating oil. two to three cutters are out on the water every day, breaking through this ice. that is why we are on the u.s. coast guard cutter willow doing just that. it's a delicate balance. the river tends to freeze and if you break up too much, it flows downstream and can clog the waterways in the new york harbor. talking to some of the coast guards, they say this is one of the worst winters they have seen since 2004. february all across the northeast has been record-breaking cold. we broke record lows yesterday morning. we're breaking more record lows this morning. and with this cold not expected to stop any time soon, cutters like this won't be stopping either. matt?

>> dylan dreyer on the hudson river. thanks very much. >> al has bravely made his way out to the plaza. good morning. any relief in sight? >> it's crazy cold, and it's going to continue. rights now it feels like it's 19 below below. we're looking at altoona, pennsylvania, 6 below. 8 above in philadelphia. that's right now. you head out west, and chicago it's a little warmer. it's minus 1 in ft. wayne. parkersburg at minus 7. this afternoon, temperatures moderate a they're still anywhere from 10 to 30 degrees below normal. and then you get down into the south, we're talking about temperatures that are into the 40s in texas where they've had some icing. atlanta, we've seen a ground stop at the airport because of icing conditions. but here comes more cold air. ahead of the front, temperatures 10 degrees milder than behind

the front. as we get into wednesday morning, look at this. temperatures really start dropping again. minneapolis, 4 below. we're looking at temperatures during the day on thursday into friday morning really plummet and really take a big nose dive. and we've got another storm system making its way from the south along the eastern seaboard. boston may tonight, guys, break the 100-inch mark on its way to an all-time snowy record. >> wow. all right, al. thank you so much. now to the other big story we're following this morning. the secretary of veterans affairs under fire and apologizing for claiming he served in the military's special forces when he never did. nbc's jim miklaszewski is at the pentagon for us. >> reporter: good morning. robert mcdonald was hired to clean up veterans affairs. now it appears he's talked his way into a mess of his own. veterans affairs secretary robert mcdonald is apologizing

after falsely claiming that he was in the u.s. special forces. >> special forces? what years? >> reporter: the comment aired on cbs news last month while secretary mcdonald was speaking with a homeless man in los angeles. mcdonald offered his apology after being contacted by "the huffington post." i have no excuse, he said, i was special forces. mcdonald was picked by president obama to fix an ailing va after eric shinseki resigned last may following reports of scandals at va hospitals across the country. he is, however, an army veteran, having served with the 82nd airborne. the white house is standing by mcdonald, issuing a statement. we take him at his word and expect that will not impact the important work he's doing to promote the health and well being of our nation's veterans. this is the second time in two weeks that mcdonald has been forced to correct his own record. on "meet the press" february 15th, he discussed his efforts to repair the va.

>> 900 people have been fired since i became secretary. we've got 60 people that we fire who had have manipulated wait times. >> turns out, only 20 were dismissed. a va official later told nbc news mcdonald misspoke. now, any public statements these days about one's military service or battlefield exploits are coming under intense scrutiny after questionable claims about their own battlefield coverage from nbc's brian williams and now fox news' bill o'riley. in talking to this homeless veteran, quote, i incorrectly stated i had been in special forces. that was inaccurate, and i apologize to anyone that was offended by my misstatement. >> jim miklaszewski at the pentagon. thank you. we have some breaking news right now. several cars of a los angeles

bound metro link train have crashed after colliding with a vehicle. these are live pictures from oxnard, california. tom costello, what can you tell us? >> the ntsb is monitoring the situation. this is about 80 miles northwest of los angeles in ventura county. at about 5:45 a.m. pacific time this morning, this l.a. bound train, three cars can hit, we're told, a utility truck of some sort. it was a fiery crash. the truck immediately engulfed in fire. three of those train cars then derailed. firefighters and paramedics have been on the scene ever since. they have now set up and have been working through the last few hours on this triage system. a color-coated triage system. red meaning the most serious, green of course the least serious. but you can see there's very little left of that utility truck on the tracks. we're told somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 people have been injured and treated by firefighters and medics on the scene.

at this point, it looks like this was a single vehicle that was involved in this crash. again, l.a. bound metro link train derailing in oxnard, ventura county. firefighters and pa areraparamedi still on the scene. quite an investigation under way. back to you. >> live pictures from our chopper knbc thank you so much, tom. natalie is here with the other top stories of the morning. >> all right. let's start first with a bizarre story out of connecticut where they're investigating a bank robbery plot after the bank's manager was found with a fake bomb strapped to his body. nbc's betty nguyen is here with the details. >> good morning, yes. no one is in custody and no one has been injured. what is really turning out to be a bizarre robbery attempt. tense moments in bristol, connecticut, on monday where police say two men wearing masks and gloves forced themselves into a bank manager's home, strapping what later turned out to be a fake bomb on him. they then ordered him to drive

to the credit union and empty its vault. the manager, who is also the chief financial officer of a chief financial credit union in new britain, was taken away from the scene in an ambulance after bomb squad technicians removed the suspected explosive device he was wearing. heavily armed federal, state, and local authorities responded to the scene using trucks as shields. >> we witnessed ourselves a very suspicious device. those vehicles are large enough to withstand a blast somewhat, keep a vehicle. >> back at the bank manager's home, his mother was reportedly tied to her bed with what the suspects claim was an explosive placed underneath it. after an extensive investigation, both devices were determined to be fake. authorities say they're searching for more than one suspect and still determining if the bank manager was involved. >> certainly we're considering all possibilities, whether or not he was coerced, doing

something against his will, or a suspect. this is an active investigation. >> now, police say there have been no arrests yet. authorities have not disclosed whether the suspects fled the scene with any money. very kbibizarre. >> sure is. thank you. today, alaska becomes the third state where it is legal to grow, own, and smoke marijuana. alaska voters passed a ballot measure legalizing pot last november. adults 21 and older will be able to possess up to one ounce and grow up to six plants at home. buying and selling marijuana, however, is still illegal and so is smoking it in public. witnesses say they were shocked that no one was killed when a boat veered off course and slammed into a busy restaurant. this happened late monday afternoon in florida. seven people were reportedly on board that boat. two were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. no one in the restaurant was hurt. heavy fog in the area may be to blame. and look at this frightening traffic camera video out of boston.

a man driving a pickup truck slams into a snow-covered barrier, went airborne, and then flew off the elevated highway and crashed down on to the road below. amazingly, he survived that crash. police say the driver is now facing drunk driving charges. and watch your step because we have some incredible video out of south korea. two pedestrians and this frightening fall. the security camera there captured all of that. you can see two people just getting off the bus stopped on to the sidewalk and fell right through the pavement into a sink hole. fortunately, both of them are okay. they were eventually rescued by firefighters. let's swivel now over to al, take a look at weather. >> thanks so much, natalie. here's the deal. out west your weather looks pretty spectacular. however, you see all this cloudiness? this is moisture. subtropical moisture making its way across the south and into the southeast. we're seeing right now showers and some frozen precipitation, some snow develo

so to the north of tucson -- tucson is at 65 degrees. to the north, you have some snow. a lot of this moisture has been making its way into the southeast. that's why we've got all that activity. we've been stuck in this pattern now for about the last two days. going to continue for the next three or four. but in the meantime, gorgeous weather in seattle, sunshine and 56. salt lake city looking good. denver at 41 degrees. san jose, 66. but you follow that jet stream, and you will see moisture now streaming into texas, where they've had some frozen precipitation, and it's continuing right on into the southeast where we've been look at icing conditions. we've had big problems. i-20 in georgia has been closed because of numerous accidents. schools in cobb county closed. look for snow around the great lakes. snow in the four corners. as we said, a gorgeous day out west.

7:16. happy tuesday. i'm meteorologist christina loren. crystal clear at our local beaches. beautiful shot from half moon bay and temperatures will be comfortable. we'll end up in the 60s but for now, temperatures are chilly enough for a heavy coat. 65 degrees later today in san francisco. 66 in the tri valley and 67 degrees for us here in the south bay. as we head throughout wednesday, to thursday temperatures will continue to warm up, and then those numbers drop like a rock we bring in rain as we get into

this weekend. >> al, thank you very much. new research could be a game changer when it comes to children and peanut allergies. the findings suggest exposing infants to peanuts before the age of 1 can actually help prevent the sometimes life-threatening condition. dr. natalie azar is an nbc news medical contributor. good to see you. good morning. a lot of parents probably just stopped what they were doing to listen to this. there are a lot of kids with peanut allergies. why expose these at-risk infants so early? >> the long-term impact of peanut allergy can be quite significant. first of all, they develop very, very early. children tend to not outgrow them. there's no cure. also, there's a significant burden to the health care system with doctor visits, emergency room visits, drug costs, not to mention the psychological impact. >> so we're not talking about exposing these infants to peanuts themselves. >> absolutely not. >> we're talking about products that contain some sort of peanut derivative. >> correct. really important take-home point, obviously.

the study looked at infants between the i thinkages of 4 and 11 months. we would never recommend to give a peanut to those kids because of the choking hazard. but peanut butter mixed with banana is what they used in this study. >> but you don't want children to be exposed to peanut products. who's most at risk? >> children with exma. also cow's milk allergy and a family history of peanut allergy. >> i think it's important just to remind parents what the symptoms are and how you might know if your child has a peanut allergy. >> correct. typically it's an allergic reaction. itchy rash, hives, maybe nasal congestion, nausea. obviously if they have tingling around the mouth, any shortness of breath, that could be a much more severe reaction. obviously it would warrant intervention much sooner. >> again, the headline here, perhaps expose these young children in infancy to peanut products. >> correct. >> all right. doctor, thank you very much.

switching gears tonight, south bay film event returns for its silver anniversary. that's right cinequest 2015 lifts the curtain in downtown san jose. it will kick off with the documentary "batkid begins." it revisits a wild day in 2013 where san francisco virtually stopped for a young boy with leukemia. his wish was to be batman. 91 films will premiere at this year's festival, it wraps march 8th. christina, what's the weather going to be like? from it will be chilly out there, similar to what we're experiencing this morning plus about ten degrees. 35 in the tri valley. san francisco is at 65 degrees and 69 degrees is the forecasted high later today but because of that cold start i can tell you a little patchy frost out there. warming by 3:00 to 5:00 degrees as we head throughout wednesday and a big pattern change into friday and that has the chance for rain pretty good prospects for rain just about everywhere.

7:30 now on a tuesday morning. it's the 24th day of february, 2015. good day for the polar bear plunge on the hudson river. >> go for it, matt. >> you're looking at a coast guard cutter breaking up the ice there. it's the willow on the river this morning. just 4 degrees on our plaza as a lot of people out there are huddled together to stay warm by the fire. that's the weather report. let's take a look at some of the things making headlines. in texas, it's impacting the "american sniper" trial with monday's proceedings canceled due to icy conditions. prosecutors are hoping to resume their rebuttal today, so closing

arguments in that case can begin. a house hearing held into the super bug hearing. at least seven patients became infected with a drug resistant bacteria during a procedure, and two of those patients died. a california congressman wants to know what the fda is doing. and wildlife officials in florida spent the night rescuing 19 manatees stuck in a storm drain. they had apparently ventured into a canal seeking warmer water and then they became trapped. coming up, we'll have more of our exclusive conversation with the family of kayla mueller. she's the aid worker who are died in the hands of isis. this morning the family shares for the first time the dangerous rescue inside syria kayla's boyfriend attempted. plus, a life-changing moment for a single mom of four who is splitting a massive $564 million powerball jackpot. what she now plans on doing with all that money. well, let's begin this half hour with that breaking news in oxnard, california. at least 30 injured in a metro link trail derailment.

nbc's tom costello is live with the very latest on this. good morning to you. >> good morning. we're now told via our affiliate knbc in los angeles that the fire department is report nothing fatalities at this moment. however, roughly 30 people injured. this happened about 5:45 a.m. pacific time this morning as this l.a.-bound train coming through ventura county encountered a truck on the rails, on the tracks, and there was a fiery collision. we're told that the driver did manage to get out of that truck, and then according to knbc he left the scene, ran from the scene but was later tracked down. firefighters from ventura county responding and treated 30 people on the scene, transporting many of them to ventura county medical center. at this point, this investigation is still very, very early, as you would expect, with not even two hours old. however, at this point, they have treated somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 people, many of them we're told are moderate injuries.

so far no fatalities. >> tom, you were mentioning that in 2008 there was a crash on this very same line. you covered it. any similarities? >> well, it was the chatsworth crash. 25 people died in that crash. about 125 people were injured or so. that case we know from the ntsb investigation was the result of the train operator not paying attention and texting while he was supposed to be running the train. in this case, we have no idea what caused this crash, but clearly you've got to wonder whether a driver, the driver of that utility truck may have played some role. >> a lot more to learn about this. we'll continue to watch that breaking news out of los angeles. thank you, tom. meantime, jury selection begins in l.a. today in a court battle over the hit song "blurred lines." it's a trial that pits pharrell williams and robin thicke against the family of marvin gaye. here's nbc's joe fryer. >> reporter: the case asks if

"blurred lines," song of the summer in 2013, copyied "got to give it up," marvin gaye's hit. >> this is a very rare opportunity to discuss the crafting of songs and how it happens. >> reporter: gaye's family argues the songs are substantially similar, pharrell williams insists he was influenced by a genre of music, not a specific song. >> you can't copyright a sound. >> right. >> you can only copyright, like, music and musical notation. >> pharrell williams does not like to be called a plagiarist and felt that any settlement would be perceived as him admitting he copied. >> reporter: gaye's family declined to comment on the trial, which will not feature fingerprints. instead, both sides will use musicologists.

>> they're going to be showing similarities or differences of melody primarily. >> reporter: but the judge ruled jurors will only hear a stripped-down io give it up" because gaye's family owns just the sheet music, not the entire original recording. copyright cases are often settled with take the grammy winning hit "stay with me." sam smith agreed to give co-writing credit to tom petty and jeff lint, who wrote "don't back dow but with the "blurred lines" case, both sides are digging in for a legal battle. >> could a case like this set a legal >> that's the $64,000 question. >> reporter: pharrell and robin thicke are expected to testify in a trial the music industry is watching closely. for "today," joe fryer, nbc news, los angeles. >> we'll continue to watch that one. meantime, al, i came over to the

weather map because all these cold temperatures are really coming from the south. what's that about? >> all these storms, combine them with the cold temperatures, we've had a lot of winter weather in places we don't normally get it. take a look. here we go again. one more time we're looking at the subtropical jet stream. we got that. plus you got the polar jet pushing in. then between the two, we've got moisture developing. this moisture coming in off the pacific. so now you get this combo of the two pushing in. you end up with all this frozen precipitatio for example, atlanta earlier, roads a mess, schools closed, big crashes along i-20. now this blue line is the 32-degree line. north of the line, it's freezing or at 32. below the line, you can start to see a mix of precipitation. in fact, here's what's happening between columbia and charleston. we have freezing rain then sleet and then snow. we're watching this line push through. as we continue, we've got winter storm watches in effect until

7:00 a.m. tomorrow morning -- or thursday morning, i should say, for atlanta, georgia, and the southeast. we're going to be watching this. as we move on into tuesday night, tonight, winter weather advisories for raleigh, north carolina. could see 1 to 3 inches of snow. this system moves up to the north, may bring 1 to 3 inches of snow to boston, which would push them over the 100-inch mark. so we're watching that system. now, let's go into wednesday morning. back here in the south, that moisture we were showing you with savannah, winter storm watches now for dallas through wednesday. snow or mixed precipitation. a flight from san antonio landing at dallas yesterday slid off the runway, so we could see more of that. some snow and ice accumulation. we move on to wednesday afternoon, evening. atlanta, you're in the ice as well. you could be having big problems on the road and at the airport. as we move into early thursday morning, the frozen thank you, al.

southern california where a metro link train hit a truck in oxnard. dozens of people are hurt. nbc's hallie jackson has more. good morning. >> good morning, natalie. here's what we know. 30 people have been hurt. no confirmed fatalities after this train crash in oxnard. this train heading south towards los angeles. you can see aerials from the scene. we know that the car or truck was carrying a trailer. when that collided with the train, the vehicle caught on fire. the driver actually tried to flee the scene, tried to run away. police were able to find him. that driver is now in custody. patients are being treated at the ventura county medical center and trauma center as well as st. john's medical regional center. the national transportation safety board says it's aware of this crash. it is monitoring it. no plans to come out just yet. don't be surprised to see an investigation from the ntsb. at this point you can see this is a facebook video that had been taken by somebody. you can see the flames of fire after that train versus car crash. the last major incident

>> it was years, but i was only hurting myself. i started to read more and work out and take care of my mind and body. i began to change and get better. i kept moving down that path. >> you staying fit is really about survival in prison. you had a very difficult time with a cellmate that was a murderer in a cell just a few cells down from you. this was as much about surviving emotionally as it was getting fit? >> it was mostly surviving emotionally and physically and as time went on i realized this is a great quality of life and i wanted to share that with other people. >> you started writing the book while you were in prison. did you have hopes it would eventual low reach an audience or did you harbor the fears that you would linger and spend the rest of your time in that cell? >> i had fears. nothing is given in our legal system. it's not about that and reality

and what the laws are. sometimes you never know what's going to happen. i would write the book regardless of what's going to happen in our future. this book will be there. >> bad news when it reached you. on your last appeal attempt that finally the courts looked and said wait a minute. this conviction needs to be overturned. were you mentally prepared to handle that news? did it take getting used to? >> it still takes getting used to. i didn't know if i was going to get out when i got that news. i was skeptical and a week later i got out and it was strange being free after a decade. i missed my 20s. coming back out into the world is a scary prospect and i'm trying to figure it out. >> you mentioned you missed your 20s and it would be harmful to dwell on that but i don't know

how you can't. >> i try to move forward in life. the 30s are the new 20s. it's about focusing on the day and not focusing on the past and what you missed. >> talk to me. you have a girlfriend now and you have this book coming out. what else is on your list? you have a lot of catching up to do. >> i do. i train in ft. meyers at a great gym. it keeps me happy and keeps me going. we have a documentary coming out. good news on that in the future. >> might you spend time with others who are incarcerated who claim their innocence? >> absolutely. that's the main component of my life. it's a great legal system but there a lot of innocent people stuck in it. exposing the truths and realities that they are facing that's the most important thing. it's hard to get a person out.

good morning. it's 8:26 right now on tuesday. i'm sam brock. we're continuing to follow breaking news from oxnard california. that's where a crowded commuter train struck a big rig sending cars flying off of the tracks. you're looking at images captured earlier this morning. that crash happened before 6:00 in oxnard. that's in ventura county. there are no reports of fatalities but 30 people are injured. the truck driver initially left the scene. the police caught up to him. we have received photos of the crash. in the pictures, you can see the flames. the chp said own lee the truck caught fire. they're monitoring the situation. we'll let you know when we have

the concealer over it so it doesn't get all messy. you need to make sure to press it directly into the skin like this. that's really where you dab it on there. i'm usualing a brush. you can also feel free to use your finger. and i think for a first time it is important to start with minimal amounts and build it up as necessary. >> then you put the concealer on. and then on top of this add the concealer. what's really important here is is that you take the concealer and press it on top rather than again, like smearing it. >> what kind of lipstick? some lipsticks are shiny. some are matte. >> definitely nothing with glitter or shimmer. i like to do a matte one so it doesn't blend in with the concealer and it sticks to your skin. >> it helps the circles? >> it is kind of just looking at

a good tuesday morning. 8:56. new this morning, investigators are trying to figure out what caused a deadly house fire in sunnyvale. fire crews got the call at a home on fisher hawk drive. firefighters say an elderly man died in the fire. according to neighbors. only one person lived in the home, but the victim has not been identified yet. >> we're following a developing

>> when it's below zero it tends to look a little icy. we're between west point, new york, and albany new york. that section of the river tends to freeze. we are on u.s. coast guard cutter "willow." we are literally cutting through the ice with the hull of the shape. that's the lane the barges need to transport heating oil to the northeast. they need to stay in the gray lines. white, not good. gray is good. the white stuff is where we have ice about 13 inches thick. this boat could actually go through the ice. we will travel down and keep cutting the paths because the barges really need to get the oil to the northeast. because it's exceptionally cold. the crew said this is one of the worst winters they have remembered since 2004. they said it's an exceptionally long period of freezing temperatures. they are out here every single day to two to three cutters breaking up the ice. they can't remember the last

taking a look at the headlines -- breaking news in oxnard, california where a commuter train hit a truck and derailed. at least 30 were hurt in the crash. that sent some of the metrolink cars on to their side. it was going from ventura to l.a. the truck driver tried to flee just before the truk was hit and burst into flames.

>> women talk about an age, there's an age that you may be on the edge. what is the median age for getting -- >> the peak fertility is age 25. but there's a progressive decline starting at that young age. but most of the drop happens late 30s, over 40s. pretty much over age 44 women aren't getting pregnant with their own eggs. but it mostly happens at 38 and 39. but you can't measure fertility. there's only one test. you don't know at any age if you're fertile until you try. >> and there are thoughts that you may have had problems along the way with end mee trio sis and other kinds of menstrual problems. >> well, they get less likely to make a healthy embryo. and their eggs become less viable. >> for a young girl watching in

her 20s and wants to make sure her eggs are viable is there something within her control she can do. >> there are tests to give us an idea. but the only test of fertility is trying to get pregnant. but don't be alarmed. just get information. >> we have jenny here. jenny's newly married but you're not ready to have children just at this point in time. what question do you have for the doctor? >> i'm somebody who'd rather wait. i'm a performer so it's not really a lifestyle to introduce a child into it. and my mom had me at 36. and one of my aunts had her kids at 35, 36. that's more of the age that i'm looking at. is that more genetic or luck of the draw. >> there is a genetic component. but just because your mom was fertile at 30 or 34 doesn't mean you will be. there are things you could do to get an idea about your current fertility and maybe make better

plans. you can do a test and find out if you want to that maybe it's not doing so well and maybe you shouldn't wait. it puts a lot of pressure on you. that's not the intent. but knowledge is power. >> right. >> you have control over your decisions, that's it. you don't have control over what's going to happen. >> the outcome. >> rachel did something that some young women are doing as well. you froze your eggs. >> yes. >> how long ago was that? >> two years ago. >> you're in your 30s now. why did you decide to do that? >> i was 32 at the time. and i was already dating my current fiance. but i had been through enough relationships that i thought i wanted some sort of insurance. >> and he's fine with all that. >> your egg anyway right? >> right. >> did anybody question that and try to talk you out of it? >> yes, they did. they just thought it was early and -- >> not necessary? >> exactly. >> doctor, is she doing the

right thing, freezing her eggs at this age? >> that's a personal decision. it's an insurance policy. it's a hope, not a promise. it's an option not an obligation. it affords women the ability to have their own eggs in the freezer if they turn out to be one of our patients who can't get pregnant with her own eggs then she's her own egg donor. >> is it expensive to do that? >> yes. it's costly. but there are advantages, too. it's the security of knowing you did something and for many women, that's a really good choice. but it's not for everybody. >> i think a lot of women, especially when they look at hollywood and see celebs having babies or getting pregnant at 40 and beyond and they go, i can wait, i can wait, look at so-and-so -- >> i've been doing this for 25 years. very few of my patients over the age of 44 get pregnant with their own eggs. >> you say it's not the amount of eggs that are -- it's the quality. >> yeah. mother nature is very cruel.

now to what could be a major breakthrough for millions who deal with peanut allergies. in the past ten years the number of people who suffer from them has doubled. >> now there may be some new hope when it comes to treating those allergies and possibly preventing them in young children altogether. >> here to explain is dr. natalie azar.

a couple of studies. the first one talks about a patch containing some peanut oils. tell us how this is changing things. >> it's changing things -- first and foremost, it's not a cure for peanut allergies. but the endpoint of this study was the people who had the patch were able to tolerate the equivalent of i think, four peanuts a day. >> without symptoms? >> without symptoms. these are people who are diagnosed with a peanut allergy, they have to be very concerned about peanut-containing foods. things that could be contaminating like candy in the manufacturer's plant. so the message is it gives them that extra blanket of security. if they are accidentally exposed, they may not have such a severe allergic reaction. >> do you wear it forever or you just wear it once and it takes care of it? >> excellent question. they didn't actually go into that in this particular study. it was done for one year. the issue is tolerance, when you have -- you're making an

antibody you have an immune reaction to something, you want to continue exposure typically with those things rather than stopping and reexposing. in all likelihood, they may wear it maybe for life. >> is the patch available now? >> no. it's a couple of years away. a lot of different studies have looked into this idea of slowly desensitizing people by giving small amounts of it until they build up their immunity. >> wanted to ask you again, a lot of people probably thinking the same thing out there. when i was growing up in the 1800s, nobody had a peanut allergy. i thought it was silly. i never heard of it. why now? >> there are a few different theories. but the most common one is that we've become too clean of a society. we're not exposing kids to different allergens. so everything your body sees

suddenly is foreign and then you start attacking it as opposed to giving people a little bit of this a little bit that, bacteria, viruses, you're building up your immune system. >> there's a second study which is interesting. they exposed infants between the ages of 4 and 11 months to peanuts three times a week what did they find? >> this is huge. if you are concerned about a food allergy, you avoid that thing completely. they flipped this on its head and they took infants at high risk, basically having a history of eczema or egg allergies and expose them three or more times a week and they found they reduced the incident of peanut allergy by 80%. >> surprised parents would have allowed that on their children. >> these are high-risk kids. without doing this, they are so likely to develop the peanut allergy. it's done -- we'll stress this -- medical supervision with small amounts so that should
