>> looking forward to it all week, how could i forget? good morning to you. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm sam brock. we have a lot to get to on this friday morning, including new details on the shooting in san francisco. first mike is in for christina, excuse me, rob. mike is here, rob is here. it's friday. only doing one thing today. >> focusing on the weather we have clouds around the bay area, no showers yet, 40s and 50s outside through 7:00 this morning. lunch time partly cloudy skies. look at these temperatures running cooler than yesterday, upper 50s to near 06 at noon and highs today close to the range and midafternoon an increasing chance for some showers from the system here that's off to the north that is going to have a big impact on some of your weekend plans. we'll talk more about that in the forecast in a few minutes. now for your first check of your friday morning commute here's mike. >> good morning, rob, folks. the bay bridge we have crisp, clear air from our emeryville

camera to the city. from our toll plaza camera an easy drive as the traffic flow is smoothly off of the maze. we expect a later build being friday. the east shore freeway and any more north of the bay bridge at the speed limit. no problems for fog this morning and no big delays. crash in fremont, we'll give you the update coming up. back to you. >> thank you. new details of a police shooting in san francisco. officers shot and killed a man late last night near 25th and fulsome. police say he had a knife and tried to steal another man's bike. >> stephanie chuang is live in san francisco. what is the latest, steph? >> reporter: good morning to you both, laura and sam. san francisco police got the call of a man with a knife chasing another man about 9:45 last night. before other officers could respond actually two plain clothed officers in the area got to the scene first. now those two officers according

to sfpd had their guns out and asked the man with the knife to drop his weapon. sfpd said several witnesses reported the man didn't comply. at some point officers felt their lives were in danger and both began firing shots at the man. investigators found at least six bullet casings on the ground. he was hit, the suspect and pronounced dead at the scene. the other man says the suspect had been trying to steal his bike using a kitchen knife to threaten his life. >> he told the captain he was coming after me with a knife this big, the knife was not that big, however, it is large, and he thankedñmy captain saying "y guys saved my life." >> reporter: investigators say they had a good number of witnesses, around eight at least who have been interviewed. both plain clothesed officers were wearing department issued stars and as usual the department put both officers on paid administrative leave while

multiple investigations take place, internal homicide detail, internal affairs and the district attorney's office. the department will hold a town hall meeting early next week to discuss what happened. live in san francisco, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> thank you. investigators say a homicide in hercules may have been the result of a home invasion. mark carr was casing homes on a bike wednesday. police say carr went into a home way man and woman inside. the homeowner fought the robber in the driveway but was ultimately killed in the attack. police say carr then attacked the homeowner's girlfriend. she is in critical condition this morning. officers arrested carr, whose clothes were covered in blood. two men accused in the shooting death of a popular security guard are expected to enter a plea in court this morning. juan hernandez and richard cruz face murder charges of the shooting of manuel zuniga in san jose.

prosecutor also file formal charges against a man in hercules man accused of sexually assaulting a child at his girlfriend's day care. police arrested carlson bartalmuci wednesday. he molested a 10-year-old girl at the apartment based day care. the girl often spent nights and weekends there. the young girl is now 13 and did not have the courage to come forward until now. >> we need to make our children feel safe, they shouldn't have to go through this and definitely shouldn't have to go through it alone. >> police have not said whether the day care was licensed. bartolmucci is on jail under $340,000 bail. family members of a man kidnapped by isis in syria are holding a candlelight vigil in mow deso. they got a call monday afternoon from a nephew in syria, hundreds of isis extremists stormed the christian village where several of charlotte's relatives lived,

including her brother and his family. everyone was taken hostage. >> and we don't know whether they're alive. >> we pray for intervention but we ultimately fear the absolute worst, the unthinkable. >> the family hopes speaking about the attack brings attention and help to those being held by the brutal terror group. the parents of the first american journalist beheaded by isis are reacting to the identification of jihadi john. yesterday numerous media outlets identified him as londoner mohammed emwazi. he appeared in several propaganda videos in which four hostages were killed including james foley. his parents are not dwelling on the man behind the mask. >> jihadi john would happen to

be in that position but if it were not for him, it would be somebody else. in all fairness, discovering who he is might be important to some people, but it's certainly not important to me. >> officials have not confirmed the identity saying it could jeopardize the investigation but some experts think releasing his identity will demystify jihadi john and make him less of a scary character. and just this morning, we're getting out first look at emwazi without his mask. the nbc bureau in london found these pictures of him from when emwazi was a boy, now believed to be in his mid-20s. congress has until the end of the day to agree on a plan to keep the department of homeland security running. the house votes today but it's a temporary fix at best. it will fund homeland security for the next three weeks giving the house more time to work with the senate on a permanent fix. stay with us as the stories continue to develop. live update on the hostage situation coming up in 30

for us a few showers possibly later on. right now mixed clouds around the south bay and north bay, not quite as cold as yesterday morning. 40s and 50s outside. it is breezy. notice that this morning around some of the hilltops, some of the gusts through the morning, 20 to 30 miles per hour at times and winds coming in off the ocean will help to keep our temperatures cool earl than yesterday. as we go through the afternoon right around 2:00 as we get the heating of the day and cool air aloft moving in, should be enough to trigger a few hilltop showers today. better chance of showers as we get towards the start of the weekend, saturday we'll see a better chance of showers around the bay area. 40s and 50s for the morning. lunch time temperatures climbing, upper 50s to low six today. cooler day around the bay area, as highs nowhere near 70 today but low 60s and the best chance of showers today in the south bay will be closer to the santa cruz mountains. san francisco highs in the low 60s and around the north bay, highs in the low 60s and low to mid-60s out towards the tri valley. to check to see if it's still a

friday light morning commute here's mike. >> it is but i see animated rain drops in the forecast so we'll track for that. in fremont, while this live shot looks fine, 880 by the truck scales and tesla north of there we're looking toward the northbound direction with the till lights. i have a slower drive registering for the speed spend sores. the arrow where the camera was, you saw little traffic, no problems. we'll track that but no incidents there, it may be a little computational error there. that's why you have us, to check up on the computer data as well. farther north, earlier crash at thornton cleared completely out of lanes and no slowing farther north towards dakota road. san mateo brunidge which had a tough drive yesterday no problems. san jose at the bottom of your screen, redwood city on the peninsula left side and the right side we have the east bay heading up toward the bay bridge without any problems. north of there, a clear flow of traffic down out of novato narrows into san rafael and the

and i saw black and blue, but now if you look at a different picture i see white and gold on that particular picture but i think it depends on the angle. we've taken pictures with our phones and they can all be different. >> you're right it looks different depending on where it's coming from. maybe there's something to that. anyway. anyway, a guess a lot of people are talking about, rob, what do you see here, plum? >> plum and blue today for us, but that dress black and blue, i don't see how it's white and gold. >> i did in a different picture. >> it's a great marketing campaign. get everybody to click on that. right now we're seeing temperatures in the 40s and 50s outside, nothing to debate about there. we're seeing the numbers a little pit warmer than yesterday. there's more moisture in the air. we haven't dropped off into the 30s like we saw yesterday morning. the breezes are starting to pick up around some of the hilltops, you're seeing winds right now generally about 5 to 10 miles per hour but some of the hilltops out towards the coast

will get gusts 20 to 30 today, one of the reasons why our temperatures today will be a lot cooler than yesterday's low 70s. we're looking at highs in the low 60s around san jose, more on the chance of raindrops on the icons coming up in a moment. low 60s around san francisco to the north bay, low 60s around santa rosa over towards mill valley and throw mid-60s for the tri valley, so the chances of showers will increase later today as the system in the pacific northwest starts to approach the bay area. for the morning at least not a whole lot out there but the atmosphere will become even more unstable for saturday, the area you see here boxed in chance for thunder during the day on saturday. cool air aloft heating about he lo he that during the day will inspire showers really strengthening at times around some of the coast to hilltops, tomorrow afternoon could have small hail with some of the stronger showers. friday the chance of isolated chance but more widespread chance into tomorrow. especially the santa cruz mountains and around san jose that should be the best bet for seeing showers develop more so

as we head into tomorrow and the rain totals really not looking that impressive for the bay area. maybe about a half inch for parts of the santa cruz mountains but the snow will be the big story headed to the sierra. starting at 4:00 today winter weather advisory. the snow totals south of highway 50 by kirk wood, snow totals approaching a foot of fresh powder in the high country as we go through the weekend. some totals may get above a foot above 8,000 feet so some good news there. today cooler temperatures, slight chance of isolated showers late and saturday the chance for some thunder. second half of the weekend looks good, temperatures climbing up into the mid-60s and one more chance of seeing a few showers, as we head into monday. back to you. >> good news, thank you very much. the bay area's new area code triggering a slew of new headaches even before it rolls out. >> this call requires that you dial a 1 or zero and the area code. >> callers in the old 405 have

4:54 on your friday morning. live look this morning outside san jose, as we await some rainfall in the next day or two. this is the story we like reporting on. the people who lost their homes in that huge nfire in san francisco's district have help to find new places to live. we told you about zach crockett who started a go fund me page. he raised more than $180,000 for them. last night he presented checks to the families, most of whom have been staying in the shelter since the fire. the "san francisco chronicle" reporting those checks ranged from $6,000 to $15,000 apiece. the fire last month displaced 54 people, most of them low income families. >> that's making a difference in the community. >> wonderful to see people come together. >> in giving you receive. 4:55 right now. see what wha mike's giving to us this morning in the form of traffic. >> looking toward oakland, 880 moves smoothly. that's a nice treat this morning. 880 farther south the overall,

the big view of the bay, what you expect at 4:55, friday morning, easy drive. the yellow shows a little slowing for the san mateo bridge. road crews on the move now, they have both directions for the road crews but traffic is flowing. northbound at tennison we have a crash reported, three lanes reported blocked but the slowing shows up on the southbound side. chp just updated it's really on the southbound side so the person who called it in was:]bv mixed up. slowing from the san mateo bridge down to tennison avenue, southbound direction opposite the arrow. northbound thornton the earlier crash cleared, southbound shows a volume increase through fremont but nothing dramatic and dublin traffic flowing smoothly westbound 580 as you'd expect for the dublin interchange. back to you. a big kick forward for the bay area's best known soccer team. >> the wait is officially over for the new home of the san jose earthquakes. the stadium right near the
