bob redell joins us from mountain view now more on the google plex. it's friday. >> reporter: it is, you're excused. good morning to you, sam. google has an enormous presence in mountain view with the sprawling corporate campus right behind me, which employs roughly 20,000 people and if you think about it, that's quite a lot, considering that this city, this town has a population of just 80,000. now the tech giant wants to expand with a new headquarters, a so-called google plex to be built within city limits that have some residents feel it's already overrun by google. >> there is a mobile home park in north bay, and a growing number of google employees are moving in there. >> it's actually bringing it up, bringing up the property values which is good. it's real good, you know. before it was pretty low but now it has brought it up quite a bit. >> we would like to get out here because everything is just too expensive for what i do, so we'd
5:07 am

5:08 am
low clouds around8áx parts of t south bay this morning and we'll have breezy conditions, winds coming in strongly off the ocean today which will help to keep temperatures running cooler than yesterday. partly cloudy skies by lunch time, locally gusty in the hills and through midafternoon, now we're starting to see a chance of isolated showers popping up especially around the santa cruz mountains and highs today running cooler than yesterday. we had low 70s around the south bay yesterday, today low to mid-60s with the chance of showers especially near the santa cruz mountains. around san francisco high in the low 60s, breezy and cooler and about the same trend for the north bay towards the tri valley, so the best timing for when we think we could see some showers for today notice by 2:00 now, down towards morgan hill and gilroy and along the coast in the hills of the north bay that will be a chance of seeing some showers and off and on into tomorrow morning around the peninsula and again the santa cruz mountains that will probably see the most out of this particular weather system but during the day tomorrow as that cool air comes in, look at the highs, upper 50s tomorrow that, will set the stage for possibly seeing some isolated
5:09 am
thunder at times for saturday afternoon, then sunday skies begin to clear, temperatures climbing for the second half of the week, and next chance of seeing a few light showers approaching monday. for another check of your friday morning commute here's mike. >> traffic flow is smoothly around most of your bay. we have that sig alert for hayward. i'll explain what the incident is and what sig alert means. southbound 880 at tennison, three of your left lanes blocked, that means one lane southbound to get by. the crash involving three vehicles, one of them is a big rig, in the middle lane. it's called a sig alert by chp because it will block at least one lane for 30 minutes, probably more and it will have a significant impact. not significant for sig alert, that's named for boyd sigmund in the '70s. take mission boulevard to industrial or tennison should get you past that scene but industrial on-ramp clear of all that activity. rest of the bay moves smoothly
5:10 am

5:15 am
how do you explain to folks how this affects them? the best answer i've come up with is it doesn't and that's a good thing. up until now broadband providers have gotten along, one exception comcast and netflix started fighting over data. this worked pretty well up until now and now there's an agency to help enforce that cease-fire. the nasdaq is so close to 5000. let's turn to landon dowdy at cnbc's washington bureau for an update. good morning to you. >> hey scott, good morning to you. stocks were a mixed bag on thursday, trading mostly flat, the nasdaq closed up just under half a percent and closed up 11 out of the last 12 days and at one point during trading it came within 11 points of the 5000 mark, something we haven't seen since march of 2000. look for data on housing and the revision on fourth quarter gdp. the dow down ten points, the nasdaq closed up 21 to 4987.

5:17 am
showers especially as we get into the weekend but this morning no worries about any rain drops just yesterday. breezy in parts of the bay area. temperatures outside right now, 40s and 50s. you notice not quite as cold as yesterday morning, we're getting more clouds or more moisture moving in, which is keeping our temperatures up at least for the morning right now, but the wind will be part of the story, one of the reasons why today's high temperatures running cooler, we watch cooler air aloft from the pacific northwest moving in and the winds coming off the ocean will drop temperatures about five to ten degrees. somewhat real time as we go through the afternoon wind gusts 20 to 30 miles per hour, especially around some of the hilltops so today's highs mostly upper 50s to low 60s and a slight chance of a late day shower around the santa cruz mountains. you'll see highs in the low 60s around san jose, toward san francisco almost like one giant microclimate, low to mid-60s for most of the bay area but the chances of seeing rain should be a little bit higher as we go through saturday. first you notice how most of the
5:18 am
moisture today is still in the northwest, and then as we go into tomorrow, the cooler air moves over the bay area, with the heating of the day and the sunny breaks we see in between the clouds that should help to stabilize the atmosphere late saturday afternoon chance of thunder briefly and air cold enough to snow levels down to 4,000 feet in the area. this is the area saturday afternoon especially out towards the coast, light chance of thunder. snow levels close to 4,000 feet the showers could produce small hail, too, something you might notice as with you go through saturday. in terms of filling up a lot of rain gauges unless you're near one of the stronger cells probably not going to see that. most the rain totals about half inch are closer to the santa cruz mountains. we have winter weather advisory starting at 4:00 today. snow totals areas south of highway 50 getting more than a foot of snow just to the south of kirk wood. great news for the sierra see resorts. it's been a long time since

5:20 am
past the scene. we have a smooth drive with the maze and easy flow of traffic. it is friday, we expect a lighter volume of traffic. the bay bridge toll plaza traffic moves nicely and no cash lanes backing up. it's further south in hayward we're watching that sig alert, three lanes blocked at tennison, back to you. >> thank you, mike. a heartwarming story at ucsf mission bay hospital. single father is going to great lengths to help his young son fight leukemia. >> there you go. that's better. >> cadon homer is 6-year-old has autism and battling leukemia. he's kept a smile on his face throughout it all. >> sort of a bright light to hang out with. he's great, when you're spending the whole day in the hospital it's great to see cadon because you know you'll have a good time. >> cadon's community is rallying around him.

the convective showers pretty easy to produce hail in the environment. the highest likelihood coming up tomorrow afternoon. the rain totals will be highest around the santa cruz mountains we think, where most of the moisture will be over the next couple of days. not much showing up today. when you add in saturdays numbers areas south of san jose maybe closing in a third of an inch of rain. most of that is focused towards monterey. this is a cold system so the snow totals in the sierra, very impressive. this is encouraging, looking at maybe more than a foot above 8,000 feet. unlike other systems this is going to drop snow as low as 4,000 feet so starting 4:00 this afternoon into saturday, winter weather advisory in the sierra could see some change in controls up through the weekend. the weather trend over the next five days a few showers possible later today. saturday looks to be the main event, the skies begin to clear, we dry out briefly on sunday. one more pretty weak system there on monday and skies clear again as we approach next tuesday. now to see if your roadways are
