a different story from what the camera looks like from oakland. showers, this is developing in last half hour of the clouds rolled in over san jose. rain off in the distance. most of us waking up to a good mix of sun and clouds. it's just one spot seeing showery activity. later on, thunderstorms possible. yes, we don't have to say that often. today, one of those days where we actually have thunderstorms on the radar. between 11:00 and 4:00 this afternoon, we'll see the best chance of seeing any thunderstorm activity. dry for tomorrow, and then more rain pushes back into the bay area by monday. notice doppler radar fired up. lots of showers off the coast of the bay. then we have snow showers across the sierra. zooming in closer, a lot of the activity across the peninsula, down through the santa cruz mountains. one cell i was showing you earlier in the skycam in san jose pointed towards south across 101 and 85, near blossom hill and the mall. lots of us waking up dry. it's just as we head through the

day, every now and again, a brief thunderstorm that pops up, lets down rain and move on. it's not a complete washout of today but a good mix of sun and clouds means cooler temperatures, upper 50s for highs today and low 60s. keep that jacket handy and umbrella. >> good day to stay inside and watch "house of cards" maybe. >> catch a movie. >> good idea. thank you. new this morning, a driver is dead in the high speed crash on interstate 580. it was a close call for workers nearby on the freeway in oakland. it happened about 2:45 this morning near the grand avenue off-ramp. the chp says the driver was going at least 100 miles an hour. he slammed into a work truck in a construction zone and died. >> hit the back of the truck and just because of his speed and the impact caused major intrusion in the driver's side compartment. >> the officer says at least three cars were involved in the crash. amazingly none of the workers

were hurt. new details this morning as our cars get more high-tech, so too are burglars. sausalito police are looking for man who broke into a car with a fake key fob to gain keyless entry as seen in this video. he stole a woman's bag and her $15,000 bike. after he somehow deactivated the sensor on her car door. experts say thieves are learning how to override electronic locks with tools like hand-held electronic scanner boxes. those can mimic our keyless entry key fobs, giving criminals easy access to our cars. >> it's my fault for having trusting the environment that i'm in and leaving my bike in the car. but at the same time, it's a really -- it's pretty freaky. i feel very violated. >> the victim and police hope the video will lead to an arrest. the killer in a mysterious homicide in sonoma county remains on the loose. investigators have found the

victim's car. they found olga dead. the red lexus had been missing until last night. investigators didn't reveal where they found her car but they hope it will get them closer to solving the crime. about los altos police are telling residents in the safe community to beware of burglars. the police department reports nearly 50% increase in burglaries compared with this time last year. they say solicitors may be casing homes. police will be holding community meetings to inform residents of the crimes hitting their city in hopes that that will prevent more people from becoming victims. one family's home was hit by burglars twice. >> people are on edge and it's a stranger's coming to your house, not welcome. >> they'll determine that a homeowner is home alone and one person will engage the homeowner while another person goes to the side or back, enters the home

while the homeowner's being occupied. >> the meetings will be held this coming wednesday and thursday. more crash and grab burglaries in san francisco. police say this silver pickup truck was used in the latest break-in. it happened at a high end audio store on california near polk street on knob hill. there have been five other burglaries like this one in recent months. thieves are used cars to break into san francisco businesses. >> there's always cars parked here always traffic here. didn't stop them. backed straight into the shop, ran in, ripped up a bunch of things, grabbed product and took off. they attempted to break into the listening room using a speaker as a battering ram and they failed to do that. >> police have not said if all of those crimes are connected. concerned residents of san francisco's mission district will have the chance to meet with the city's police chief monday. this follows a deadly police shooting thursday night. police say a man was trying to

rob a victim at knife point near folsom and 25th in the mission. two plainclothes officers happen to witness the attack and drew their guns. they say they shot and killed the would-be robber when he refused to drop his knife. the big money makeover of san francisco's delores park has been put on hold. workers had to clean up yesterday removing about 20 tons of sand from the giant sandbox because it was littered with broken glass after a party wednesday night ended with people smashing beer bottles. the city's recreation and parks department says this is a big setback for the park's renovation. happening today, san jose leaders hope to fight gang violence and get crime off their city's streets. the mayor's gang prevention task force is holding its seventh annual crime and prevention summit. the goal to build rips among community members focusing on the youth. a reformed gang member will be

"today in the bay's" na net miranda has the story. >> nothing else was missing? everything was intact. >> reporter: binders containing hundreds of treasured recipes mysteriously disappeared overnight from mr. holmes' bake shop, a 3-month-old start-up in the tender loin that's seeing a surge in popularity. 7:00 a.m. opening the bakery's sold out in hours. >> good morning, officer, i'd like to report stolen recipes. >> reporter: word got out to the shop's loyal following and customers were worried famous cruffins, croissant and muffin hybrid, were history. everything was backed up on a computer. >> some people calling up through the day, if they stole the cruffin recipe, are you going to have cruffins tomorrow morning? if not, we might not come. but we'll have cruffins.

today is the soft opener preseason game the earthquakes will be be taking on their rivals, the l.a. galaxy. 10,000 people are expected to come out. be prepared for traffic for the new stadium. avoid driving altogether and take vta to get there the loud noise and traffic congestion on game days brings crowds, and that's good for business. the owner of mon pizza hoping to make new customers out of fans. the mayor of san jose looks forward to the turnout as well. >> when you have public gathering space, people part of one community, it starts to create a sense of pride. >> and did you know, avaya stadium home to the largest outdoor bar in north america? the soft opener game starts at 2:00 this afternoon. the first official game is march 22nd. it's a breakthrough in the fight against breast cancer, developed right here in the bay

area. a new therapy is set to prolong lives of patients by more than 16 months. doctors say it's unprecedented. here's "today in the bay's" ian cole. >> reporter: michelle avery diagnosed with breast cancer in september 2013. doctors told her her cancer was aggressive and spreading quickly. >> i had cancer all through my spine and my hipbones and i had too many liver lesions to be able to count. >> reporter: her doctors elected for a treatment found to be successful in women with incurable her2 positive breast cancer, includes one-fifth of patients, avery was overwhelmed. >> and then to learn, okay, for rest of your life you're going -- every three weeks have do these infusions and i thought, my god, who could do that? but it's okay. >> reporter: instead of using just chemotherapy, doctors added two more drugs in herceptin and perjeta. when this method tested in clinical trials it expanded the

patient's average life expectancy by more than a year. >> this is the kind of discovery that's unprecedented. we don't see anything like this. >> reporter: uncommon because most breakthroughs have only added a few months to life expectancy. the study also found patients given the cocktail of drugs lived nearly five years, compared to the usual life span of two to three years. >> there are women who will be treated with this therapy who will never relapse. these will be -- the disease will be controlled. in other words, incurable disease in some patients will become curable. >> reporter: both herceptin and perjeta developed at genentech. they point out the therapy isn't new to most doctors but the clinical trial showing its effectiveness is. the findings were published in the new england journal of medicine. >> the study is really the result of many years of reserve here and in fact about 30 years. in really trying to understand

what drives a subset of breast cancers. >> reporter: the drugs may not be for everybody. costs about 11,000 a month, insurance companies cover some patients, and genentech has a program to help people who can't afford. for michelle, tumors and lesions disappeared. she'll continue treatment under doctors' orders and says it's been life changing. >> it's been a year and a half. so far, so far it's been great. >> reporter: ian cole, nbc bay area news. 7:18. let's check in with anthony slaughter with a look at our weekend forecast. >> cloudy in the south bay now but we have lots of sunshine across the rest of the bay. it's one of those days where you get sun, cloud, rain, and sun comes back out. yes, keep the umbrellas handy. not going to need them all day. but every now and again, get caught under one of the brief showers. there you can see live camera now, shows san jose, where we did have a shower earlier has

moved tonight morgan hill. i want to show you the radar, big picture. this tells a story. we have an upper level low of low pressure sitting right on top of the bay area. and you get counterclockwise rotation around it, that's why you have showers towards the southeast and around it you get the snow showers that turn up towards the northwest. so that area of low pressure's going to be with us all day long. as it sags to the south, it's going to keep the rain in the forecast as we head through the day as well. notice activity across the peninsula through the santa cruz mountains but we did have one rogue cell through san jose. it's cutting towards morgan hill and will roll towards gilroy. not a heavy cell but it does produce moderate rainfall. it will continue to produce moderate rainfall. through the day, really that's what we're looking at. you can see we have sun from every van tavantage point. we'll see building clouds like the peninsula and the south bay

and then that will drop down rain showers. overall, not talking about a complete washout of unfortunately not talking about a lot of rain. the system that moves through today, produce a quarter of an inch under the downpours and not widespread. you can see, 11:00 this morning. again, most of the bay area dry. north bay, san francisco peninsula, east bay dry but a few thunderstorms especially across the south bay around 11:00 in the morning. as we head through the day, what you'll find showery activity, hit and miss. by 5:00, still a few showers towards north bay, through the altamont pass through the east bay and the south bay. the thing about the thunderstorms, though, they're going to be short lived and not strong. we may get one or two lightning strikes and that's. notice by 8:00, things clear out. we'll be done with the showery activity. microclimates, notice every city will be cool, upper 50s to low 60s. cupertino 61.

the federal government put millions of americans back to work, building bridges, dams and monuments. and a few were put to work making art. those treasures likely would have been lost if not for efforts of the people in this story. "today in the bay's" garvin thomas has the bay area proud. >> when you hear someone call a history detective, they usually aren't a real detective. but michael ramos is. he's a special agent with the united states general services administration. he catches bad guys who waste taxpayers' money or steal government property. a case he's been on the past few years doesn't fit that mold. what it is, is our "bay area proud." >> the targets of his investigation, special agent mike ramos was told, could be found at the grand avenue branch of the south san francisco public library. the fact the objects of his search were just hanging around, hiding in plain sight as it

were -- >> sophie brannon. >> reporter: -- didn't make their discovery any less sweet for mike. when i first walked in here i saw that i got the goose bumps. >> reporter: two paintings by the late artist sophie brannon were the beginning of what mike found. in back rooms, basements and behind boxes a dozen other works of art all with one thing in common. at the height of the great depression, the works progress administration or wpa, put millions of unemployed americans back to work. that included artists. hundreds of thousands of pieces were commissioned, then placed in public spaces, like libraries all over the country. the government then promptly lost track of most of them. >> sometimes records were nonexistent, facilities closed, administrations changed and lose track of the artwork. >> reporter: but a few years ago mike's bosses at general services administration decided to track down the lost works of

art. they reached out to mike and mike started reaching out to others with a few bump as long the way. >> i have to say, when i first got the e-mail i just looked at mike's job title and i thought, oh my gosh, what have i don't? he shuffled all of these. >> reporter: but shannon was the san mateo cloud library on board, showing mike more than 50 works of wpa art they had stored in their attic. >> a lot of people are very passionate about wpa. once you're able to make the connection to them, you essentially have another investigator on your side. >> reporter: mike says all of this has been time well spent. the more than 150 pieces of taxpayer property his office has tracked down are valued at close to $3 million. not to mention the value of making sure once lost pieces of american history don't stay that way. >> there's a lot of work to be

the system moving over doesn't have a lot of moisture to work with. later on, with the heating of the daytime, we'll get thunderstorms between 11:00 this morning and 4:00 this afternoon. it's going to be hit and miss, it's not a huge rain event for everybody. i think most of us will stay dry. it will be a few select folks that get up under the shower. a brief downpour, then the sun will come back out. dry for tomorrow, more rain in the forecast for monday. we have rain across the bay this morning, across the santa cruz mountains and monterey bay and snow showers across the sierra. expecting to get a couple of inches across the sierra 4,000 feet. south bay, dry. we have a shower move through, making its way towards morgan hill. a lot of the rain activity across the santa cruz mountains. keep in mind we'll see a good amount of sunshine but every now and again, clouds produce brief heavy rain and then it will move on and the sun will come back out. it will be cool. talking about upper 50s to low 60s. kind of a wintry day across the

7:43 the time. start off with a live look out across palo alto. this morning you can see clouds across the bay. we'll see cloud cover through the day because of an area of upper level low pressure sitting on top of us. even across the south bay, extensive cloud cover. the farther north, that's where you have more sunshine, san francisco, north bay, more blue sky. notice the icons across the bottom of the screen, yes, rain

in the forecast for today. some of lus see thunderstorms especially across the peninsula. santa cruz mountains the best bet. down across the south bay, looking at best chance of seeing thunderstorm activity. north bay, san francisco, tri-valley, east bay, rain showers. it will be brief, whatever does come out of the sky, because the system doesn't have a lot of moisture to work with. we show you the doppler radar, a lot of the activity across the coastal waters and up towards the sierra, right in between a lot of the showery activity. as we move through the day, showery activity off the coast. rain, going to move through into the bay area. we are going to see showers later on. this is 11:00. notice a lot of the stuff off across the coastal waters. but there will be a few thunderstorms that start to pop up across the santa cruz mountains, even the foothills of the south bay. activity will continue as we head through 1:00ing 2:00. after that things become more i should say less widespread and we'll start to see more sunshine as we head towards 4:00, 5:00.

castro, mission districter 59. embarcadero, 58. you get the picture, you need a jacket. next storm system, you can see, it's a big one but un-natefortuy it's going to lose power and moisture, it's going to work up towards the pacific northwest. by sunday. we'll be dry tomorrow and monday the system moves through. yeah it's not going to produce a lot of rainfall but more mountain snow about 4 to 8 inches more of snow headed to the sierra, even on top of the couple of inches today. that's good news for the mountains. unfortunately for us, a little bit of rain today and same story for monday. you know what? it's going to head towards tuesday and wednesday, back up to 70 degrees. something for everybody. >> if you don't like the weather today, wait a few days. >> there you go. well, now to news that farmers dreaded. there's likely no federal water allocation for california this year. the federal agency responsible for delivering water to many
